• How do I connect to my home's primary wired network through an extra (wireless) router?

  Thanks for looking! I have set up a desktop PC in my workshop. The Cat 5 cable connects from this PC to a wireless router which is connected to my home network. The Internet connection is working just fine. However, the "wired" network this is on shows up as a different wired network than the one that the PCs inside my house are connected to. This is a problem because I would like to connect this workshop PC to various shared resources like printers, HD Homerun (cable tv card), shared drives, etc. When I go to "Network and Sharing" and attempt to find the network that the PCs inside my home are connected to, I don't see it. Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

• Is there any way I can use two monitors in the console in Linux?

  I have recently become the proud owner of two monitors in my workspace. (Ok not owner, but you know what I mean) and I'd like to use both of them at once. Problem is, I much much prefer to use a Linux Server console over a desktop environment. The graphics card on the machine is a GTX295 (don't ask why, it's a long story.) so I essentially have two graphics cards. Each has a DVI output. Is there any way I can get the console to stretch across two screens? Or will I have to install a desktop Ubuntu for this to work?

• How to increase Remote Desktop resolution?

  I'm using Windows 7 on a PC and connect to it via Remote Desktop Connection for Mac by MS, using a Mac. On the Mac, I have a 27" Display with 2560 x 1440 px resolution. The PC has a high performance graphics card (one of those that needs an additional power supply). Both machines are connected via network cable to a router. So network should be insanely fast. However, the max resolution I can get is 1400 x 1050. The PC just has a old and bad 21" monitor connected to it. How can I increase the resolution to 2560 x 1440 to work fullscreen with the Apple LED Cinema Display via Remote Desktop? Maybe I shouldn't even ask, because I already experience some lag at the low resolution of 1400 x 1050. But I guess this can be resolved as well?

• Windows 7 Line In Delay Issue [closed]

  Not sure if this question should be posted on a different stack exchange site, so if you find that it should not be posted here, please move it. Either way, if you know the solution, please advise. I'm running Windows 7 Pro 32-bit on my Dell Latitude 2100 netbook and I'm having an issue with the line in device/driver/functionality. The device & driver are stock: Driver Date: 7/13/2009 Driver Version: 6.1.7600.16385 I'm almost sure that the manufacturer of the sound card is RealTek. The problem is that there is a delay (when monitoring input) between the source and the speakers. My setup is bass guitar running through a 12' long instrument cable (1/4") with a 1/4" female to 1/8" male adapter into the line in port on the computer. Then the 15' long headphones/line out cable goes into a standard set of powered speakers. How do I get rid of this delay? Thanks for any help.

• Windows 7 Natively on Mac OS X Bootcamp, Airport Wifi Unable To Connect

  I am using a brand new MacBook Pro. I am running a copy of Windows 7 natively via bootcamp (No use of Virtual Machine Software at all). However the only way I can get Windows to connect to the internet is via ethernet, as opposed to the Macs Airport card picking up the wireless. It just refuses to connect, and gives me a limited access status. Any ideas!? I've run Windows XP natively via bootcamp and I had a few issues with the network constantly dropping out, however I blamed that on the drivers and the general shiteness of XP.... Help greatly appreciated.

• How can I convert and repair MPEG-TS (DVB-S captures) for better playback?

  I have a lot of MPEG-TS video files (H.264 video with AC3 or MP3 in a .TS container) captured from a DVB-S capture card. When I play these videos it's much slower to seek in the video (ie. skip 30 seconds, etc) than with other files. I'm not sure if the problem is the H.264 encoding (reference frame count?) or the MPEG-TS container, or if the MPEG-TS file contains sync errors, etc. Does anybody have a good workflow for converting and repairing these files?

• BSOD after PC has been running for a while

  I'm having a problem where my computer is getting a blue screen. I have noticed that the BSOD happens after the PC has been running for about 2 days. The BSOD's seem to be an error with atikmpag.sys with an error code of 0x00000116. The problem started about a month ago.It has happened all five times that I left my computer on that long in the past month. Because my computer is a pre-built one from Dell, and I had upgraded the graphics card (at least a year ago) to a more demanding one, I replaced the stock 360W power supply that came with it. I replaced it with a more powerful, 680W one, because it seemed like the problem could be related to a lack of power supply wattage, but it didn't affect the problem at all. • Why are my hardware tabs disabled for my VMWare player image?

  I just installed a Ubuntu 10.10 image on VMWare player and after I finished installing I was messing with the hardware settings and I did the following: 1. disabled the floppy device 2. changed the CDRom to "use system cdrom" 3. tried to enable the VMWare tools but it complained that the vm was in "Easy Install" mode After I fiddled with the VM now my floppy and 2 CD rom devices as well as sound card and USB settings are all disabled in the VM hardware settings. Any idea on why this occurred and how to fix it?

• How to route local traffic over switch?

  I'm just cabled up at home but haven't got any way of verifying that gigabit speed can be reached. As I've only got one laptop with one network card, one cable, and one switch, I'm kind of stuck. I'm using a tool that you can start as a server or as a client to send data from one box to another. I would like to send and receive on the same Windows box. I guess if I use my network local IP address, my Windows 8.1 PC will just route traffic internally. Is there some way of forcing the traffic to go to the switch and back again?

• Audio input problem in Ubuntu 9.10

  My audio input is a mix of my mic output and my sound card output. I'd like it to be just my mic output. I was able to do so in Ubuntu 9.04 but the interface is 9.10 is totally changed and I tried every my creativity was able to think. It's really annoying when talking to other people over the internet because they keep hearing their voice back. I'm not sure I explained it in clear way so I'll give you an example: What I do: I put an mp3 on play or a video on youtube then open a recorder and start to talk on my mic. What happens: both my voice and audio from mp3/youtube get reordered, even if I put headphones volume to 0 (via hardware). What I'd like to happen: Only my voice should be recorded. I'm sure I'm missing some technical term, but that's the problem and I'd like to solve it in Ubuntu 9.10, any idea?

• Windows 7 random black screen when idle

  Occasionally, when I'm away from my computer for about 5 minutes, the computer screen will go black and all USB devices (keyboard/mouse) will lose power. Attempting to move the mouse or pressing keys does not 'wake up' the computer. This only started happening a few days ago but I'm not sure what changes I did could have caused this and I uninstalled programs (one by one) I installed before it started happening, but still having the same issue. The one thing I noticed different about my computer since it started happening is i've been getting random survey popups from www.insightexpress.com. I ran Microsoft Security Essentials scan, it picked up some Java related malware, I removed it but still the same issue. I'm running MBAM right now and will run SAS after. Edit: I just updated drivers for motherboard and video card and ran virus scans, still having the same issue.

• NVIDIA Driver Crashing on Custom-Built Windows 7 PC

  I've got a custom-built PC with these specs: Fractal Design Define R3 ASUS P8Z77-V motherboard Intel Core i7-2700k with Thermalright HR-02 Macho Cooler NVIDIA GeForce GTX 560 with Arctic Cooling Accelero Twin Turbo II Cooler Crucial M4 128 GB SSD 1 TB Hitachi HDD G.SKILL Ares Series 2x8 GB RAM (x2) SeaSonic 520W PSU Windows 7 Ultimate SP1 (x64) NVIDIA driver version 301.42 Upon building the PC, I overclocked the CPU (but never the GPU), and there were no problems for 1-2 months. Then I started getting crashes with this error when doing anything that's computationally or graphically intensive: I un-overclocked the CPU, but that hasn't fixed anything. This is what the inside of my case looks like: I'd appreciate any guidance on resolving this problem. I did get some of the thermal paste on the graphics card when installing the aftermarket cooler, but there were no issues for a month or two. Update I did a clean install and the issue persisted - looks like it's a hardware issue. I will try removing/cleaning/reseating all the parts.

• Motherboard Issue - 3 Beep Bios (memory error) despite new RAM

  I have an Intel dG43RK motherboard, bought new and sealed, and have tried two different brands and speeds of RAM with a 3-beep BIOS indicating a memory error, which also occurs without RAM installed (as it should). The memory tried is; 1x4GB 1333 Kingston HyperX DDR3 RAM (New and Sealed) 2x4GB Team Elite 1066 DDR3 RAM (New and Sealed) I have tried multiple configurations and seating layouts and still no luck. I also have a GT520 graphics card on board as I dislike in-built graphics in most cases and had it at hand (also new and sealed). The only used parts are the CPU, which worked in my previous tower and was directly taken from the PC into the new set-up and the CPU Fan which will be replaced with a new fan in the foreseeable future once this is resolved. I've run out of ideas myself and any help is appreciated.

I thought about adding two SSD drive for a OS. other 15*(12 SATA & 3 SSD) drives i want to build with aufs XFS and ethernet 4GB/sec network. But I'm confused a little. S5520HCR board supports 6, SATA/300, RAID: 0, 1, 10, Intel ICH10R. Does it mean i can use SATAIII HDD? I'm planing on buying SEAGATE SV35 Series (3.5, 3??, 64??, SATA III-600). also my Chassis supports up-to 16 sata and the motherboard only 6 what kind of sata controller should i use? What's better in terms of performance 1366 or 2011 socket? • System Lags/Freezes when under high usgage

  I am not sure if its my GPU / Memory or Hard drive thats failing. For example if I'm runnning more than one instance of chrome and running an application that takes up a lot of resources, my system will start to lag and freeze. When I launch Photoshop the GPU feature disables automatically, this also lags when I click on menus and when working on documents in Photoshop. I really dont know where to start, if i should buy a new graphics card or test the memory or could it be my OS drive?   On the iPhone, I use MagicJack to get completely free calls over WiFi to US numbers. I'm looking for a similar app to enable me to call UK numbers for free on the iPhone. Does anyone know of one? To make this question of broader applicability to everyone, what apps also allow free calling to other countries? Any smartphone platform (iPhone, Android, Blackberry, Windows Phone) could be useful. Note: I'm talking only about apps that allow completely free calling - the Apple app stores at least are full of apps that allow "cheap" calling. Suspicious apps that require credit card numbers upfront, etc., aren't as interesting.

• No External Sound

  I have ubuntu 9.10. Headphones appear to work fine. External speakers - nothing. There are so many sound preferences I have no idea what or which combination. Went to terminal did alsamixer seems to recognize my soundcard, though the driver is not listed in system - admin -hardware drivers, the only driver listed is my graphics card. I have tried several forums and it seems no one is interested in responding to sound issues. Here's hoping it is different here.

• Run a server and local wireless network off my laptop with no internet.

  I'm trying to run a wireless network from my computer so that people in range can connect to the network and hit a website running off my machine. I don't want to enable file sharing or remote access or anything else of that nature. I just want them to be able to connect to the network, type in an IP or domain name in a browser, and be taken to a locally hosted website. No broader internet access needed. Any ideas / links to good tutorials on the subject? Is this something i can achieve with just a wifi card or will need a router?

• Failover NIC with Windows 7 running Apache Server

  I have a Apache Server running on a Windows 7 Desktop for a internal website (Intranet). I am trying to figure out how I can make this system as failover safe as possible. One thing I want to do is use the 2nd NIC card that is currently disable. I only have one gateway address to my router. I do not have any computer running a Server O/S. If NIC1 crashes by chance(just humor me!), how could NIC2's IP take on the host name (I have mapped in host file) . I don't really care if the static IP of NIC2 changes seeing that the host name is the only thing I need. Could I add two IP's to the host file, with same host email and maybe create some script that will run IF NIC 1 fails? OR is there any failover software that will do this for me?

• FreeBSD 9 (amd64) reboot/shutdown process is very slow

  I have a Dell Poweredge 2900 III with FreeBSD 9 (amd64), the server uses mfi wich handles a raid10, I had to reboot the server, but notice that either when rebooting or shutting down the server, something is going wrong, besides taking to much time to reboot/shutdown, after rebooting I notice that that some ldap instances within some jails could'nt start and this was because the database was corrupted. This make me think that probably something was wrong with the disks or mfi card, but checking the disk array / logs everything seems to be working fine. My set up is something like this: Host server has the minimum base of FreeBSD 9 amd64, within I create some jails, the ones contain services like mysql, email, and some others ldap. With FreeBSD 7 and 8 I didn't notice this behavior but with FreeBSD 9 something is not working well. I did a clean installation of FreeBSD 9 and root filesystem is using ZFS. • what's POST code 18 / can I run an ASRock P55 Pro + Core i3 530?

  When I switch my newly built PC on, the fans start up, but I get nothing on the monitor, and the POST display on the motherboard runs quickly through various codes and then stops at code 18, which does not appear in the manual (the list there seems identical to this one). This lasts about 10 seconds, after which the machine shuts down. After a pause (also about 10 seconds) it starts up again, and this repeats until I cut the power. Interestingly, when I push the reset button, it stops at POST code 16 (which is also not listed in the manual). Does anyone have information about the meaning of those codes? Motherboard: ASRock P55 Pro CPU: Intel Core i3 530 Graphics Card: Sapphire HHD 5750 Does anyone have experience with that Motherboard/CPU combination? It says on the packaging and in the manual that it's only compatible with Core i5 and i7 (no mention of i3), but on the maker's product page, the i3 is listed as compatible as well.

• Android - Where to store generated bitmaps?

  I've got an app which dynamically generates anywhere from 6 to 100 small bitmaps for the user to move around the screen in a given session. I currently generate them in onCreate and store them to the sd card, so that after an orientation change I can grab them out of external storage and display them again. However, this takes time (the loading) and I'd like to keep the bitmap references around between lifecyle changes for quicker access. My question is, is there a better place to store my generated bitmaps? I was thinking about creating a static storage library in my base activity, something that would only need to be reloaded when the app is completely removed from memory (shutdown, other apps need resources, 30 minute restart, etc). Ideally, I'd like the user to be able to back out to the title screen, click a "Resume" button, and in onCreate I just have access to those resident bitmap references instead of having to load them from storage again. For this reason I don't think Activity.onRetainNonConfigurationInstance is what I need. Alternatively, is there a better way to handle multiple generated bitmaps than what I'm doing or the plan I described?

• Can't run monitor at native 1080p resolution on Windows 7

  I have a 24" ViewSonic VX2453 monitor that supports 1920x1080p, connected using HDMI. However at that resolution, the desktop goes off the screen. Using the Nvidia control panel, I have to set it to a custom resolution of 1804x1014 to display correctly. The monitor has its drivers properly installed (the correct model name shows up in control panel after installing the drivers), and I'm running 64 bit Win7 Ultimate. I have a GeForce 560 Ti card, if that helps. Why does this happen?
