• Extremely poor WiFi reception on new desktop

  I just received a new desktop with a built-in WiFi card (Windows 7 Home Premium x64). However, I am only able to receive any WiFi signal when the computer is within 1-2 meters of a router. Even then, the signal is very weak (Windows 7 says it is "poor"). I have tried this with 2 different routers and see similar results. I have somewhere around a dozen other devices that can connect to both routers with greater signal strength (usually full strength) from much, much further away. When I tried calling support I was instructed to reinstall my drivers and attempt to change the WiFi channel of the router. Neither worked. I was then told that the problem was with my routers and that the computer was functioning normally and that it was certainly not a hardware problem. What would be the cause of this and is there anything I can do to fix it?

• Unauthorized computer use via keyboard or remote access?

  I’m suspecting my computer is being used when I’m not at home. This is happening either physically or remotely. My wireless switch is off. Is there any way possible to detect and/or monitor activity without purchasing software? My settings are being changed as well as passwords (Bios PW was changed and I cannot access Bios settings). I connect via the network cable. Is it possible for someone (in range) to connect to my laptop even if the wireless switch is off? This is a Dell Inspiron 1720 with the WLAN 1395 card. Here’s the kicker. When I try to download freeware for monitoring activity, I am not allowed to do this! ????

• iPhone Docked Playing Through PC, Buzzing.

  Hi. I have an iPhone that I fit into an Apple dock. There is an audio cable from dock into the line in on my sound card. My headphones are plugged into the line out. I get this really quite buzz that is fairly constant, but changes as the iphone "does stuff". It's not so bad when the music is playing. But when it stops I get the buzz, so I can't really use my headphones as "noise cancellation." It doesn't help to change my volume sliders on the PC. Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

• Black screen on Windows 7 right after opening Google Sketchup or Minecraft

  I get a black screen on Windows 7 right after opening Google Sketchup or Minecraft. I presume there are other applications that cause this too - but I have not tried to open them. The window initially stops responding for a few seconds, before I get a black screen and my Skype call ends abruptly. I have tried waiting for a few minutes but nothing happens. I have to power down my computer and then boot it up again. This is becoming an annoyance, and I don't know what's causing it. Here are my specs, if it helps: My graphics card is an ATI RADEON XPRESS 1100. If you need any more info or if I've missed anything please ask. Thanks :-)

• Cisco 2900 series router - 3x 3g HWIC - Can you use the same subnet for each HWIC?

  We host a site with a 2900 series router with 3x 3G-HWIC cards installed. It is hosted with telstra and plugs into our corporate WAN. The card authenticates against radius and advertises a route into the WAN for which subnet it routes for. We have always used the same advertised subnet on each. Telstra have advised us that this could be the cause of some drop out issues whereby some services will work for some people and not for others and are saying effectively that their system will only use one of these at a time even though we can see the interface is online and assigned a WAN IP address. Has anyone out there configured a multi HWIC setup before and if so are they using different subnets for each or the same?

• Hyper-V and host-installed hardware devices: can guest VMs access?

  Have a couple of servers I'd like to setup as Hyper-V Servers, with a couple of Windows 2008 Standard VMs. On the host, we have a few hardware devices we'd like to be accessible to the guest; I'm not sure if these are supported via a raw "pass-thru" on Hyper-V (which I don't have a lot of experience with) if the same drivers are installed on the guest. Hardware in question is a Brooktrout fax card, a SCSI adapter for the tape drive, and a 9-pin serial connected to one of the core firewalls for management.

  I tried to reinstall Windows XP to Windows 7, but I could not install the video card drivers because the driver installation software only works on XP.I have launched the setup program with XP mode. After I installed the setup, I restarted the computer and Windows 7 wasn't booting.But that isn't the problem why I asked this question. The problem is that I have reinstalled my Windows 7 Ultimate to Windows XP SP3 and I wanted to install Dameon Tools.After installation I restarted the PC (as the setup wanted) and when the Daemon Tools launches it shows the error: Application failed to initialize properly (0xc0000006). Click OK to terminate the application.

  Is there a way to add widgets to a Gnome screensaver? I think this can be done with KDE 4, but I've never liked KDE very much. I'm a programmer and comfortable with writing code if needed. • High frequency, kernel bypass vs tuning kernels?

  I often hear tales about High Frequency shops using network cards which do kernel bypass. However, I also often hear about them using operating systems where they "tune" the kernel. If they are bypassing the kernel, do they need to tune the kernel? Is it a case of they do both because whilst the network packets will bypass the kernel due to the card, there is still all the other stuff going on which tuning the kernel would help? So in other words, they use both approaches, one is just to speed up network activity and the other makes the OS generally more responsive/faster? I ask because a friend of mine who works within this industry once said they don't really bother with kernel tuning anymore-because they use kernel bypass network cards? This didn't make too much sense as I thought you would always want a faster kernel for all the CPU-offloaded calculations.

  with celeron processor and 512 MB ram windows 7 takes too much time even to open a folder in windows explorer. I connect to internet with GPRS modem. When I tried to connect with remote linux machine with putty ssh client. The problem is the putty becomes Not responding in 2 or 3 minutes. I've to connect again and putty goes Not responding again. When i tried in Safe mode with networking, GPRS modem is not even detected. the modem is USB data card. • Applications starts very slowly from a network path

  Hi We have a windows 2008 server which hosts the network share \\srvcompany\lib. This share contains several applications needed for the daily business. Every client/user (all win xp) has shortcuts on the desktop to these apps. We have the problem that at several (but not all) clients the apps starts very slowly. If I copy the application's programm files to a local folder then they'll start fastly. When I watch the memory usage in the task manager on such a "slow" machine while an applications starts I notice that the memory usage grows much slowier than when I start the app from a "fast" machine. But when I copy files with Windows Explorer from this share, the speed is nearly the same. I've also checked the network driver, both tested clients have the same network card with the same driver version. Has anyone an idea where or what I should check next to solve this problem?   This days, it seems that I either go worse with my eyes or some settings with contrast and brightness have been changed. However, I have been searching now for some tutorial on how to adjust contrast and brightness, and I have found already some, on how to use Microsoft Win7 Calibrate Display Color program, but some people don't recommend it.. My monitor control menu shows settings (which are by default) that contrast is set to 80, contrast to 90 and sharpnes to 45, for which I belive are pretty dam high. I'm usually every day in front of my PC about 6-10h. The biggest problem is, when the night comes, and I have to read some word document, after a 10-15m of reading, eyes starts hurting. I'm using ASUS VW198 and Nvidia 9800 GT graphic card. So please suggest me, what should I decrease, contrast or brightness or both?

  I have P4 processor with nvidia card. Now if i don't connect to internet then my computer stays on for as much i can like 4-5 days. But if i plug in the ethernet wire. Do some surfing and leave computer as it is. Then computer fails. I mean The display on screen gets off Looks like something stopping the power supply to Harddisk. But motherboard stays on , FAN is still running , i can eject CD drive as well. But no display on monitor. I have to turn off and then turn on again. • Detecting hardware and installing drivers in Windows XP

  I have on my desk a computer that I am reinstalling. I have just completed the Windows XP install , which is professional service pack 3. I have also installed an AV package. Now it is time to install the audio and display drivers. Windows Update does not detect the Display card, and neither the audio device. I really have no idea what devices are present in this system, and I am thinking of opening the case, and reading some IDs from the cards themselves. Before I do this, is there not some kind of tool that can automatically detect hardware and install drivers automatically. If not then at least tell me what devices are present, with some real descriptions, so I can search for drivers.

• Android: Associating Browser to File Type in App

  I'm attempting to write a simple app that associates a file type to the browser; this is assuming the browser will open the file locally... If this doesn't work, the local file - editor will be fine. I have an option of auto-mailing .ELC files from a custom app, they are basically html formatted TEXT or TXT only files; I would like to associate the .elc extension so that it will open direct from mail rather than just "Save to SD Card" as a mail option. • Moved VM doesnt work correctly on my Ubuntu machine

  Hi I have a Windows 7 VM that I have moved onto my Ubuntu 64bit host machine that is running VMware player 3.1.0. I think the VM was created on a Windows host. The problem I have is that when I login to this VM the screen goes blank and stays that way. The login screen is fine, but the desktop never correctly appears and sort of shows some strange pixelation that is all distorted. Seems like a virtual video card issue? If I boot into safe mode the desktop appears fine. Any ideas? Thanks

• 3 Monitors on a Notebook

  I would like to use 3 screens on my Dell Inspiron 1720 So On the laptop built in screen have that as one, and then have 2 more screens. The catch is, that I want to play racing games with this set-up. So that my main screen is the focus area (the front window if you will) and the other 2 screens will be used for peripheral vision, on the side. The software that I use (LFS.net) does support multiple screens. However the notebook can have the main screen on, and another external screen. So I would need to split this "second" monitor output, to 2 screens, the one to the left of the main monitor, and the other one to the right. Is this possible? Is there perhaps a external card / docking station solution that could help with this? Any advice or ideas is greatly appreciated. Best Regards Rihan

• Computer hangs on start-up, but re-start always works

  I press the power switch; the fans start whirring; then precisely nothing happens. The monitor lights (I have two monitors) blink to indicate that they aren't receiving any signal - no BIOS splash screen, nothing. This scenario occurs about 80 percent of the time, the other 20 percent being normal starts. Noticing that the computer has not started properly, I press the power switch for four seconds to turn the computer off, and then I press it again to start the computer for the second time. It always starts normally the second time. Always. The power supply is a 750W from SilverStone. The motherboard is a Gigabyte P55A-UD3P. The video card is an Asus EN9800GT. There's 8 GB of RAM. I don't know what other information might be pertinent. Help!

  Hi, this is an intermitent problem in my Sony Vaio model PCG-5K1L. I keep on getting a "No Audio Output Device is installed" when hovering my loudspeaker icon in Windows Vista. I have tried System Device Manager Sound Realtek High Definition Album Update Driver Software. The update process went through, but nothing happens. Still Vista does not seem to recognize my audio software. The strange part is that out of nothing my sound card can resume working to stop again hours later... If someone has any clues to solve this, please, help. Thanks a lot.

• Win Server 2008 R2 - Mapped shared folder hanging?

  I have recently built a windows 2008 server R2 machine. This is purely for file server purposes and is very much a basic build. All windows updates installed and part of domain. I have setup a shared folder on the C:Drive and added permissions for domain users as co-owners. The client machines run XP SP3 and are part of the domain also. We have a few servers running the same setups on a few of our sites but this one is particular crashes users machines (explorer.exe hangs for at least a few mins) when attempting to access the shared folder. I have turned off the option on the network card for power save aswell still no change. Any help with this is very much appreciated and i look forward to hearing from you ;)

• Windows 8.1 will not go back to sleep after waking up

  I have problems putting Windows to sleep and starting the screen saver on my new Windows 8.1 machine. Sleep mode and screen savers work only when the computer is first powered up (or restarted). But once it goes to sleep (manually or automatically) and I wake it up later, it wont go back to sleep again and I can't use screen savers either. I updated the chipset and graphics card drivers. • How to get monitor resolution of 1680x1050 using ATI Radeon HD 2600 PRO in a dual monitor setup

  I have Sapphire ATI Radeon HD 2600 PRO graphics card in my Windows Server 2008 x64 machine. It has two outputs a VGA and a DVI. I have connected the DVI to my Dell 24" monitor with 1900x1200 resolution and it works 100%. The VGA I have connected to my second monitor a Samsung 22" with native resolution of 1680x1050. But the ATI driver and Catalyst control centre doesn't show this resolution as an option. If I choose a lower resolution like 1280x1024 it looks really bad and fuzzy. I searched in google and downloaded the powerstrip tool that allowed me to create a custom resolution of 1680x1050 and then this option shows up in Catalyst control centre and my 2nd monitor works fine now. But I don't want to pay for an application to choose a display resolution. Why doesn't ATI show me that option by default even though it has no problem in actually supporting the display at resolution. Is there a way to get 1680x1050 resolution using ATI drivers only ?

• Problem with Win7 connecting to Internet

  Hello, I have had Windows 7 for about a year now and for the first four months it worked perfectly. But for the last 8 months it has been horrible. It will connect to the Internet for about 5 minutes and then just lose connection. It will reconnect in about 5 minues but then it just keeps disconnecting. I ran a virus scan about 2 weeks ago and I found a Trojan on my PC which I removed and dealt with. It was fine after that but now for these last couple days it has been just as bad as before. I think a virus is causing this but I will read any suggestions and tips to help me solve this problem. Thank you. • Can a motherboard be faulty even if it's getting power and so are components hooked up to it?

  Sort of a followup to this question. The mobo's getting power, the lights are on. The GPU fan is spinning (it doesn't use auxiliary power, it's only connected to the mobo). I'm not getting any video signal, and it's not the video card (nor monitor) that's faulty, so I'm suspecting mobo or CPU (possibly RAM?) and I'm trying to pinpoint which part is at fault. Is the motherboard a candidate for being broken or is it not very likely if it's getting power and powering other components? The CPU fan is getting power as well.

• Deploying virtual machines - Windows Guest/Linux Host or vice versa?

  I'm looking to deploy several virtual machines for users. They need access to both Windows and Linux. They also need to use the computers graphics card (for Photoshop, modeling, etc) under Windows. My question is, will an Ubuntu host/Windows guest or a Windows host/Ubuntu guest be faster? I'm somewhat worried about Windows getting a cluttered registry and slow, but on the otherhand, a Windows host would have direct access to hardware (Unless I'm just unaware of how to grant hardware access to a guest). Does the choice of software (VMware or VirtualBox) effect the choice?
