  • SQL Server Performance & Latching

    I have a SQL server 2000 instance which runs several concurrent select statements on a group of 4 or 5 tables. Often the performance of the server during these queries becomes extremely diminished. The querys can take up to 10x as long as other runs of the same query, and it gets to the point where simple operations like getting the table list in object explorer or running sp_who can take several minutes. I've done my best to identify the cause of these issues, and the only performance metric which I've found to be off base is Average Latch Wait time. I've read that over 1 second wait time is bad, and mine ranges anywhere from 20 to 75 seconds under heavy use. So my question is, what could be the issue? Shouldn't SQL be able to handle multiple selects on a single table without losing so much performance? Can anyone suggest somewhere to go from here to investigate this problem? Thanks for the help.

  • Windows Server 2003 Synchronize Not Sticking

    We have a Windows Server 2003. It had Raid running on 2 disks. One disk failed and the Raid Controller failed. We replaced the disk and controller and restored everything. No data was lost. The users of that server found that there were a number of directories that appeared empty. We found that from their machine, we could right-click on the directory and select "Synchronize" and the files in the directory would now be visible to them. However, when opening Internet Explorer and browsing the web and ftp'ing to a web site, the files in the directory would vanish. We would have to "Synchronize" them again to get them to reappear. What is going on to cause this need to Synchronize and then re-Synchronize again? What do we need to do to fix this so that the directories are permanently visible?

  • Windows Server 2003 Hacked - Files Being Uploaded

    Blank directories are being created on my Windows Server 2003 virtual server with sub directories that are weird (for example: "88ÿ ÿ ÿÿþþ þþ13þ"). It looks like they are uploading bootlegged DVDs and pirated software. All of my bandwidth and file space is being eaten up. Could this be a shared permissions issue? Where should I look to further investigate this? My security permissions for the directory that is being hit are as followed: Administrators - ALL GRANTED IIS_WPG - Read & Execute, List Folder Contents, Read Internet Guest - DENY SYSTEM - ALL GRANTED Users - Read & Execute, List Folder Contents, Read My Event Viewer is showing many Logon/Logoff with NO IP?

  • upgrade from windows server 2008 r2 std to enterprise

    We recently had to upgrade our servers from Win 2008 R2 Standard to Enterprise. The upgrade method was DISM. After the upgrade, a lot of weird things started to happen. Though Windows says it's been properly activated, we lost 1) RDP settings (disappeared from the Remote Setting tab of Properties of My Computer) 2) The option to join a domain is grayed out 3) The server had to 2 physical processors 12 cores each. Now, task manager or windows sees only 1 processor (or only 12 cores) 4) the amount of physical ram on this sever is 32 GB (Windows reports only 4 GB are usable) Has anyone encountered this before ?     We're currently using Cleo LexiCom as our server software for receiving EDI transmissions via the AS2 protocol. We have 7 trading partners per year, and this runs us about $800/year for support from Cleo. We need to expand from 7 trading partners to 10 or so, and Cleo charges roughly $600 per new host, plus an expanded yearly support fee. My question(s) are: Does anyone know of a cheaper developer of AS2 server software, and perhaps one that doesn't charge per new host? Does anyone have any clue why we are being charged an upfront fee for new hosts, and if this is a standard practice for AS2 software providers? It seems really odd that we are required to pay upfront costs for this. I could completely understand an increase in the yearly support, however.

  • Debian Server Daemon: File sync

    Hello, I'm looking for a way to (auto) sync files on some pcs over the internet and save/backup them on my server. Just like Dropbox and other services like that. I found iFolder (by Novell), but it's not made for debian (i think it would still compile). I don't know if it's made for an webserver or just home server. Another way would be FTP, I don't know clients (i use ubuntu and windows on my pcs), which autoupload new/edited files. There is also svn/csv, but they are quite slow (afaik), and I don't know if there are suited for this. Someone got an idea? Thanks.

    Hi, we are trying to outsource the server side of our game applicaton to someone. They recommend using http://www.smartfoxserver.com/ instead of our traditional php/mysql combination. Our game is in actionscript and will be using social aspects of facebook later on. Smartfoxserver is supposed to reduce the time of development. The thing I'm having a hard time getting right now is how? How does it reduce the time. We will still be making a RDMS writing stored procedures and game logic based server scripts.     I am upgrading the memory on a Dell PowerEdge 1800 Server running Windows Server 2000 (32 bit). My Computer Properties currently reports "2,096,432 KB RAM" (4 modules @ 512MB each). Crucial.com scan reports: "Each memory slot can hold DDR2 PC2-5300 with a maximum of 2GB per slot. Maximum Memory Capacity:  12288MB Currently Installed Memory:  2GB Available Memory Slots:  2 Total Memory Slots:  6 Dual Channel Support:   No CPU Manufacturer:  GenuineIntel CPU Family:  Intel(R) Xeon(TM) CPU 2.80GHz Model 4, Stepping 1 CPU Speed:  2793 MHz Installed in pairs of modules." We will be completely replacing the old 512 MB modules. Will there be any performance difference between installing 4 modules @ 1GB vs. 2 modules @ 2GB?

    I accidentally disabled the administrator account on an install of Windows Server 2008 R2 via the net user command. Now I cant get an elevated command prompt to re-enable the admin user, nor do any privileged operation that requires an admin password. Normally I would type in a password and click yes but there is no password field and yes is grayed out. How can I re-enable the administrator account?

  • SQL Server Job system silently fails

    We run numerous scheduled jobs using MS SQL 2005 job scheduler. Over the past few weeks, we've been witnessing that a running job will simply STOP and will not record any history in the Log File Viewer. What appears to be happening is that the server will start a job and record these steps into msdb. At a random step during a job, the server will stop running the job and it records no error. This silent failure prevents a "Step 0" record from being created and we won't see anything in the Log File Viewer. Anyone else experience this?

    I just turned on Bitlocker on my development laptop for the first time (Windows 8.1) and encrypted both SSDs. When I started SQL Server Enterprise Manager, it could not connect to the default instance on the local machine. Does this not work? I have been googling for an hour and only found anecdotal evidence, but no solid information. Just to clarify - I am not interested in encrypting a database. I want to run SQL Server on a machine with an encrypted drive.

  • sysprep'd Server 2008 R2 VMware autocheck BSODs

    I'm trying to set up a template Server 2k8 R2 (Standard) VM in our VMware ESXi environment, we'll need to deploy a whole lot of them and I want to (a) streamline and (b) standardise the server build process. Originally I built a sysprep answer file using WAIK and the Windows System Image Manager - once I'd run sysprep using this, restarting the machine resulted in a "autochk.exe not found - skipping autocheck" message, followed almost immediately by a BSOD. Rebooting just resulted in the same thing. I first assumed it was my answer file, but have now checked this on a physical machine and it works fine. I've reinstalled the OS on the machine (and NOTHING else), and run sysprep.exe (ticking Generalize) - this produces exactly the same result. I've also attempted to use the Customisation Wizard built in to VMware - again, the same autocheck message and BSOD is the result. Any ideas? Let me know any further information I need to provide...

    In order to update an application on a Windows 2003 Server box, the application calls for 2.0 GB of free space in the System's Temp directory. The OS is on C:\ , and there is only 1 GB of free space there.... The server has a RAID configuration for its data on the system's E:\ . There is over 100GB of free space on E:\ . When I did a set tmp I found that the system's TEMP directory is not surprisingly located on C:\ .... TMP = C:\DOCUME~1\ADMINI~1.DES\LOCALS~1\Temp I assume it is possible to change the System Temp directory to the be located on E:\ ? How is this done, where's a good place to stick it, and is it safe to do this ?

  • Most efficient Way to setup a game server

    I'm running a PHP based game which has over 45 Million members predicted for end of this year (2011) Currently we are on 7.5 Million, this game is being ran on facebook and I am in desperate need to help get this game server as efficient and as powerful as possible. it is a dedicated server with Processor Manufacturer Intel Model i7 920 Frequency 4x 2x 2.66 GHz NIC GigaEthernet RAM 12 GB Hard disk 4 x 1 TB specs. It has apache installed, cPanel, phpMyAdmin, several apache mods and MySQL. The game also runs 47 mysql calls per second per user. Is there any alternatives to the above which could be faster, more efficient etc? I dont mind having to recode the game to fit to it, as long as it maximises our upper limit of members on the game. Thanks Also, is there a way to tell what our maximum limit to players, database calls etc is? Thank you again, hope you guys can help :)

    I am setting up a network to support IPv6. Stateless Autoconfiguration seems to be the preferred way to get an IP address on an IPv6 network but is this the preferred way for a server? Other machines outside of the network are going to need to be able to talk to the server. Is it preferable to give the server a static IP address or is there something fancy that can be done with DNS to keep track of the server address?

    Is there any way to provide 100% uptime on SQL Server 2008 R2? From my experience, the downtimes for the different replication methods are: Log Shipping: Lots (for DR only) Mirroring w. NLB: ~ 45 seconds Clustering: ~ 5-15 seconds And all of these solutions involve all of the connections being dropped from the source, so if the downtime is too long or the app's gateway doesn't support reconnection in the middle of task, then you're out of luck. The only way I can think to get around this is to abstract the clustering a level (by virtualising and then enabling VMWare FT. Yuck. Good luck getting this to work on a quad-socket, 32-core system anyway.). Is there any other way of providing 100% uptime of SQL Server?

  • Plesk on Windows Server 2008 memory usage

    I have a server running IIS and Plesk. There is a problem every day now in which the memory usage of PleskControlPanel.exe and w3wp.exe slowly increases. And at some point all of the sites hosted on the server go down. Restarting Plesk through its panel will reset its memory usage for a while, and restarting IIS will make it last even longer, but there is still the constant memory climbing problem. I cannot see anything by looking through the event viewer. Has anyone ever seen anything like this with Plesk on Windows? Thanks for any help.

I heard that dedicated server has lots of limitations than cloud. but for cloud they uses SAN for storage so I am afraid the reading proces for database may be bit slower...and their basic plan ram is only 1 GB.
