• Editing remotely the PHP files on a Centos server

  I have a intranet web server (Centos 6, Apache, PHP) to which I would like to give access to a developer. He will connect by remote desktop from Windows 7 to Ubuntu 12.4 and from here by SSH to /var/www/html folder where it has to create and edit the files. This solution was chosen because: - I could not make a remote desktop connection from Windows to Centos - The web developer need some editor for PHP files and is not allowed to install software on Windows 7 machine - it is more a test solution ( we are all learning to use Linux). When the developer is connected from Ubuntu to Centos by SSH (SFTP) he could save the changes only if on Centos the account used to connect has ownership to that folder. Can you please tell how can I give all required rights. I tried different solutions found on Internet but without to much success. Are there other way to connect to Centos server?

  I want to use Android phones to check tickets at the gate of an event. These phones are connected to a password protected router (WPA2) and a PC to validate. That all works nicely in a test setting, but I'm worried it might collaps if there are many other competing phones around. How can I get a stable WIFI connection between my phones and my router when thousands of irrelevant phones are around? Do the other phones clogg the router with requests even when the router is password protected? Shall I hide the SSID?

• OpeVPN log connecting client IPs

  I looking for the best solution to log all connecting client's ip to either a text file or a database who logs into my VPN server. Under the IP I mean the public WAN IP on the internet where they are connecting from. A hack could definitely be to make the openvpn server log to a separate logfile and run logtail periodically to extract the necessary information. So the database I want to build would look like: Client_Name | Client_IP | Connection_date roadwarr1 | 72.84.99.11 | 03/04/14 - 22:44:00 Sat Please don't recommend me to use the commercial Openvpn Access Server. That's not a real solution here. If the disconnection date could be determined that would be even better so I could see how long a client was connected and from where! Thank you

• Event 4625 - Logon Failure - Server 2008 R2 is logging them all over the place ! How to stop the attack?

  I've been monitoring failed logons to a server which is directly connected to the internet with no hardware firewall in the way...testing purposes only. Using the Server 2008 R2 firewall, I blocked access to just about everything except RDP, then I told the firewall to only allow connections to the RDP port from "MY" static IP. I tested from other locations and I am not able to login to the server unless i'm at my office. So how are people coming from Chinese IP's able to attempt logons and get logged as failures ?? Is there something i'm missing that needs to be blocked? Any help would be appreciated.

• PHP/Oracle Connectivity randomly "drops out"

  Hi! Here's the current situation - I have two web servers (for now named A and B) and two database servers (named C and D). The web servers are quite old, and are running an early version of Apache 2 + PHP4, while the DB servers are running Oracle 9i and 10g respectively. We're experiencing a strange problem connecting (via PHP code) to database A while on web server B only. Web server A has no issues at all... Randomly, web server B will report a "Not connected to Oracle" error (3114). I can't see a real pattern with this, but refreshing a few times seems to fix the issue. Apparently there are no drop-outs on the network interface, which leads me to believe that there's some misconfiguration between PHP/Apache and Oracle (which uses connection pooling). We're running SunOS 5.8... Any ideas?

• Slow remote desktop connection to VPS

  When I use Windows 7's remote desktop connection to our company's VPS (Win Server 2008 32bit) I receive a very slow connection - most of the times it actually grinds down to a complete halt. This is in contrast to my team mates which have no problem remoting to the VPS. I'm using a brand new Dell Studio 1558 laptop with Intel Core i7 and 4GB RAM with a clean installation of Windows 7 64bit Ultimate. Any suggestions for how to diagnose \ solve \ workaround the problem would be appreciated. UPDATES: I checked, and it seems the problem exists with all the computers connected to my home LAN. Once I take my laptop to the nearest coffee shop it works fine. What could be the problem with the LAN?

• Kvpn on ubuntu 11.10 is stuck on 'Connecting'

  I recently installed open-vpn and it's gui, Kvpn, on my ubuntu system but after I load the configuration file and click 'Connect' it just runs through and gets stuck on 'Connecting', never actually getting connected. How do i get around this or what might i be doing wrong? The profile was set up using a .conf file and the network i'm trying to connect to needs only a username and password. I'm on a wi-fi connection, with one network card(also behind a university firewall, i suppose). Any help regarding connecting to a vpn on ubuntu would be much appreciated. Thanks!

• Recommendation for hardware upgrade: thin clients? Or...?

  I work for an animal shelter in Upstate New York. We have about 50 machines running XP Pro. They're connected to a Windows network with a domain. About half of these computers are used for nothing more than using two web-based apps -- one to keep track of our animals, the other to process credit cards. Having a full-blown desktop PC seems like overkill for this purpose. The PCs are three-to-five years old, and I'd like to come up with a plan to upgrade the hardware. Our donations are down (not surprising, given the economy), so cost is a big factor. Can people recommend some options? Some sort of thin client, maybe?

• A GFX card with two DVI and one HDMI with audio?

  I haven't upgraded my PC for a while nor kept up to date with pc hardware since 2007, but have recently come up with a requirement and I am wondering if I can solve it! Are there any graphics cards out there that have two DVIs and one HDMI output, with the HDMI supporting sound over it? Basically, I've got a two PC monitor setup, and both monitors are connected to the two DVI's of my GTX9800+. I want to upgrade my card to say, GTX 460, but can't find if there is such with two DVIs (for my monitors) and one HDMI with audio (for my TV). So I am wondering, if such solution possible at all? I noticed that there are some cards out there with two DVI's and one mini-HDMI, but they all say 'HDMI Output Yes x 1 (via DVI to HDMI adaptor x 1 )', which probably means that because of the DVI element, the audio won't work. • Virtual Sd-card won't transfer [migrated]

  I have a Verizon Galaxy Nexus 32GB. I've installed AOKP on it and it has been running pretty okay with no bugs etc... But after I connected it too my Nintendo Wii I think it mounted sdcard as FAT32 itself :\ I'm receiving the following error when trying to download something from 4Shared sync app(But actually none can download or transfer anything to Virtual sdcard): XXXXX.apk: open failed: EACCES(Permission denied) I already restored my old backup wiped all data etc, nothing seems to work.   I'm trying to get my HP T5740 thin clients to connect to my local network without much success. I asked a question here but haven't got any response. I think that question should have been posted on serverfault instead. I was thinking that the problem seems to be that the thin clients aren't able to get an IP address when they are connected and I can't manually set it. So if I was to somehow set up a dhcp server on the network with my server that runs a 32 bit version of windows 7 ultimate edition. How do we set up a dhcp server in windows?

• Destination host unreachable

  I have 2 router connected to 1 switch which contains two vlans, 1 router has the ip table of vlan1 and the other router have the ip table of vlan2 I have trunked both router cable to the switch. I have set 1 ip table per router which correspond to the ip address of the PC that have this router address as a gateway. When I ping from 192.168.100.2 to 192.168.200.2 it tells me that destination host is unreachable and the message is from the router 192.168.100.1. So I guess router for 192.168.100.x does not see the router for 192.168.200.x , right ? Or am I wrong ? • Windows XP clients do not update server 2008 DNS forward lookup zone.

  I have a Cisco 5505 working as a DHCP server, and a server 2008 DNS server running an AD domain. I am having problems with all XP computers not updating the forward lookup zone. The reverse lookup zone updates are working. Windows vista and 7 computers update just fine. Additionally the DNS server accepts both secure and non-secure updates. When people are connected through the Cisco's VPN, they cannot resolve to any machines that have reverse lookup zones, but they can resolve entries in the forward lookup zone. I have tried ipconfig /registerdns, but the forward lookup zone entries for the XP clients are not being populated. How can I get the XP Dynamic DNS client to make the updates, or what can I do to debug what's going on? Thanks

  Is it possible to setup several additional domain controllers (ADC) at remote locations that are connected via medium bandwidth DSL (2-10 Mbit) WAN connections for a single domain (intranet.example.com)? And would it be a good idea? We have five sites and would like to have extremely high availability if any of the site were to lose their Internet connection. However each site is very small, and all are over a fairly small geographical area within the same region, so it would seem strange to have a PDC for each of the sites. If it were possible to have an ADC for each site, would the clients use the ADC or just use the PDC if it's available to them?

  Is there anyway to make a folder or a partition on a computer (Linux/windows) to act like a flash drive to other computers or devices when connected with a usb cable. For example, I have a windows 7 computer with 2 partitions c and d, then connect that computer to another computer or a smart TV using a USB cable (has to be male to male USB cable) then the other computer or TV recognizes the current computer as a usb device.   I have Firefox and Google Chrome installed in the same machine (Linux). It happens when I type something in Chrome Omnibox it suggests pages I have already visited in Firefox. I have never connected the accounts of both browsers I have never imported information from one browser to other I have never visited the suggested pages in Chrome The keyword I type in the omnibox is vague and there is no way it could guess the suggestion without having access to the Firefox history. i.e.: i type "ir" in Chrome and it suggests me the same Iron Maiden lyrics page I have browse before in Firefox.   As a Web-Developer what is the most efficient (automated) way to connect to a Virtual Machine (VM) running a development webserver from it’s Host Machine (the machine running the VM) when you do not have control over the networks (home, Startbucks, work, etc) you are connected to? Currently I start my VM (a VirtualBox VM running CentOS), run ifconfig to determine the VM’s current IP. I then take that IP and map it my Host machine’s host file so that I can access the VM’s webserver from the Host. I feel that this is not an efficient way to connect to my VM’s webserver because each time I connect to a new network (a few times a day) I need to repeat the IP look up and host file update, and sometimes restart the VM's network service.

• Prioritize file sharing capabilities in Windows Server 2008

  I've got a server running Windows Server 2008, and use it mainly for sharing files throughout the domain from a number of disks. It's running on VMware ESXi 4.0, in case that matters. My problem is that when I log in to the server to check user permissions etc, the access speed the files on the remote disks almost grinds to a halt. I havn't been able to measure the speeds, but I would guess it slows down to about 100kB/s as soon as I log in. This is on a gigabit network and the problems are equal for all users, even the ones connected to the same switch as the server. I've assigned 2 GB RAM to the server, and reserved it 1,5Ghz processor power. I don't have to do anything special on the server for this halt to occur. How can I make sure file sharing is prioritized on the server, so no matter what applications I'm using it will always make sure file sharing works properly? Could this be a VMware issue?

  Hello, My hardrive was failing so I needed to reinstall win xp. I completed the reinstall and the drivers but now only the wireless connection works. The broadband states connected but does not go out to the interenet. When I click Internet Explorer it says unable to find webpage. I have tried several major sites so I know its not the site but some configuration or something I need to do on my end. When I go to the cmd prompt and renew the ip it refers to my wireless nothing about this broadband connection. What do I type/select to get this to go out to the Internet. The broadband is working for my other laptop so I know the connection is not the issue. Any help would be much appreciated thank you.

• Remotely initiate windows updates

  I have a network with countless workstations on it and the windows updates are done through WSUS in push cycles to allow us to use a generic image and configuration and avoid network congestion. I have a number of workstations in storage that are connected once a month for a few days to recieve updates, however not all of them fall within their push cycle. I want to avoid going to each machine and clicking "check updates" as that would require me to connect a monitor, mouse and keyboard. Is there a way (preferably through powershell but im open minded) to initiate a check and install of updates on a remote system? Lets say for 1 system at a time right now, I can add a file reader and a look later. NOTE: the configuration of the WSUS server is above my pay grade, im simply being asked to ensure these machines are updated. Thanks for any help or hints

• External monitor turning black intermittently

  I have installed an external monitor (Dell ST2220L, 21.5 inch) on my laptop (Sony Vaio). I am using a DVI-D cable for connection. Since the laptop does not have a DVI-D port, I have connected a DVI-D to HDMI connector on the laptop end and inserted the cable in HDMI port of the laptop.. I have switched off the laptop display and adjusted the screen resolution on the Dell external monitor to 1920 x 1080 and adjusted colors for the Windows 7 and brightness and contrast from the monitor. The problem is the monitor turns of blank intermittently for 1-2 seconds and turns on again at random interval. What could be the reason for this and how to get rid of this problem?
