• Distorted text in programs

  I've installed Ubuntu 11 with gnome and in some point the text in the programs becomes unreadable like this. It's not only the text, but even the desktop background looks awful. I've tried to add section in xorg.conf, but it didn't helped out. • How to syncronize two animations without delays

  I have one character idle animation running inside a game in a loop, over and over again. A a certain time I trigger another animation to be played, for the same character. The second animation won't play immediately, as will be a discontinuity in my character animation. First I wait for the idle animation to finish and then I play my second animation. Now I have a smooth, continuous animation, BUT I have introduced a delay between my action and character animation. If I play the second animation right away as it is triggered, the character animation won't be continuous and smooth. I was thinking on breaking the idle animation in small pieces and also to have the same number of second action animations to match the last frame of the idle pieces. This won't solve the delay completely, only will minimize it a bit. So it's a magic formula of how can I get rid of this delay? Thanks.

• How can I improve the battery life under 12.04 on my Inspiron 14z? [duplicate]

  This question already has an answer here: Tips to extend battery life for laptops and notebooks 24 answers How do I improve the battery life of my Inspiron 14z under Ubuntu 12.04? This laptop gets 4-5 hours of battery life using Windows (e.g. here). I've removed Windows, installed Ubuntu 12.04 and the initial battery life was only 2 hours. With some tweaks (described below) it's still only ~2.5 hours. For reference, the laptop is the latest model of the 14z: i5-3337U processor 32GB MSATA, 500GB HDD (5400rpm) AMD Radeon HD7570M graphics card I have put ext4 partitions on both the SSD and the HDD, and have mounted / to the SSD and /home to the HDD. I also put a 24gb linux swap partition at the start of the HDD, though I figure this won't be used all that much (the laptop has 8gb of RAM). After googling around and reading Ask Ubuntu and other sites extensively, I have done the following steps, and they have improved the battery life ~30 minutes (exact improvement not clear, but battery life is still nowhere near 4-5 hours). Installed Jupiter (and set Performance to "Power Saving") Installed laptop-mode-tools cat /proc/sys/vm/laptop_mode now outputs 5 (previously it output 0) But it's not clear that this will help: AskUbuntu question Turned down the brightness of my screen from full to 1/3 Other things I have heard about but have not tried for fear of frying the laptop or my linux install: Add "pcie_aspm=force" at the end of the line with "quiet splash" in /boot/grub/grub.cfg Enable ALPM, but it may already be enabled in 12.04? Enable i915 framebuffer compression Use a propietary driver for the graphics card? Turn off the graphics card? (what would happen if I relied on the internal Intel bridge?) Use TLP? Spin down the HDD more aggressively (howto, but I think laptop-mode-tools does this already) The only other thing I've noticed is that plastic just above the F5, F6 and F7 keys gets really hot. According to Jupiter my CPU temperature is only 69 celsius and the System Monitor shows CPU load at 7% so I don't think it's the CPU. Maybe it's the graphics card? Also, I've set up MongoDB and LAMP on the machine as well. When I run powertop MongoDB is high in the list, but I'm not sure if that's relevant to battery life because I'm not actually doing anything with MongoDB most of the time. The code is scattered everywhere. There is code in the Controllers, in the models and even in the views. The application uses PROPEL as an ORM. What makes this really difficult is that the Controller may not be directly calling the table, but it may be instantiating a model class that calls that table. Is there an educated way to approach this crazy task? Note: Searching for the table name won't provide a solution because if a model uses that table I wouldn't know which Controller is using that model.

• Ubuntu Server 11.10 AMD64: Installation of graphical desktop changes kernel!?

  I've a Ubuntu Server 11.10 amd64 installation that needed a graphical desktop to execute some visual apps. While searching for the correct way to achive this, I noticed that there was a lot of people saying that invoquing the gnome desktop installation (apt-get install ubuntu-desktop) would switch from server to desktop kernel. Is this true!? I've checked and the kernel seems to remain unchanged after the install. I need to be sure of this because the desktop flavoured kernel doesn't seem to support the ServeRaid 8K controller sitting on my IBM server and I have no ideia on how to enable support for it. (I'll be grateful if someone could point me a good guide on how to install ubuntu when the storage controller is not detected) Any comment on this matter will be greatly appreciated! Good linuxing!

• Installing 12.10 on Dell r710

  I have been trying to install Ubuntu 12.10 on a Dell r710. I have 6 disks in each 2 TB. I setup a raid 5 in the HW raid controller with all drives, and proceeded with the OS install. When the partitioner runs it fails to create / for some reason. I then tried just setting up a simple raid 1 with 2 drives in the HW controller, and doing the OS install again. The installer runs fine this time. Once trying to boot I then get a kernel panic of 'Target File System doesn't have requested /sbin/init' as well as a bunch of 'deleted inode referenced'. Can someone tell me what I am doing wrong here?

  I have two goals set up for my site in Google Analytics: one to download the demo of my software, and the other to buy the full version. I'm having trouble getting statistics on how often the download leads to a purchase. This seems like something the multi-channel funnel is perfect for (as in this question)---I expect that it takes multiple visits for the demo download to convert into an order. However, I can't seem to narrow down the multi-channel funnel data into only those that have one goal followed by another. If it matters, I'm tracking the ordering action as a page view (i.e., someone views the "Thanks for ordering" page) and the demo download as an action (which fires when someone clicks the "download" button).   I'm currently working at a quite big Android project (a social network, you can see it here if is useful to answer the question). We decided to restyle the whole app, changing all the UI design. The code I actually have is complex, there are many controllers, and it's a little messy too. Is it "better" in terms of time and code cleanliness to take one controller per time, and rewrite it entirely, or to modify one controller per time? The layout change entirely anyway, so for that I know I've to restart from scratch. Maybe it could seem a stupid question, but with the "time" variable I really can't see the best way.

• How to make Ubuntu 14.04 run with less lag?

  I recently updated from Ubuntu 12.04 LTS to 14.04 LTS and for the first time it worked! However, whenever I move my mouse over an application icon on the unity shell, the animation takes forever to show me what the name of the application is ( A.k.a the tooltip ). The same happens with menus and sub-menus. Other than that, it is overall in general, slow. I just want to know if there are any tips to fix this or make my system faster. While implementing MVC(Model View Controller) I got a question which I would like to discuss or to hear some opinions of experts. The question is about management of unused frames... For example next sequence of windows: ResourceLoadingWindow - LoginWindow - GameWindow Definetly that I don't want to reuse ResourceLoadingWindow , since I'm using Java Applet and I don't see any situation when I will need to reuse it. The different story is about LoginWindow, which can be reused a lot of times, because some player would want to Logout and come back again in few minutes for example. I would like to know, following the MVC structure, should I destroy window, removing it from ContentPane or just hide? Maybe I need to unregister it from controller or I shouldn't do so? • Resolution problems

  i'm having some troubles with screen resolution. First of all, i'm using a Lenovo Thinkpad E520, with BackTrack 5 R2 installed. As far as I know, BT is based on Ubuntu 3.2, so I hope this is the right place to ask for help. My natural resolution is 1366x768, but I'm stuck with 1024x768. • Application workflow

  I am in the planning process for a new application, the application will be written in PHP (using the Symfony 2 framework) but I'm not sure how relevant that is. The application will be browser based, although there will eventually be API access for other systems to interact with the data stored within the application, again probably not relavent at this point. The application manages SIM cards for lots of different providers - each SIM card belongs to a single provider but a single customer might have many SIM cards across many providers. The application allows the user to perform actions against the SIM card - for example Activate it, Barr it, Check on its status etc Some of the providers provide an API for doing this - so a single access point with multiple methods eg activateSIM, getStatus, barrSIM etc. The method names differ for each provider and some providers offer methods for extra functions that others don't. Some providers don't have APIs but do offer these methods by sending emails with attachments - the attachments are normally a CSV file that contains the SIM reference and action required - the email is processed by the provider and replied to once the action has been complete. To give you an example - the front end of my application will provide a customer with a list of SIM cards they own and give them access to the actions that are provided by the provider of each specific SIM card - some methods may require extra data which will either be stored in the backend or collected from the user frontend. Once the user has selected their action and added any required data I will handle the process in the backend and provide either instant feedback, in the case of the providers with APIs, or start the process off by sending an email and waiting for its reply before processing it and updating the backend so that next time the user checks the SIM card its status is correct (ie updated by a backend process). My reason for creating this question is because I'm stuck !! I'm confused about how to approach the actual workflow logic. I was thinking about creating a Provider Interface with the most common methods getStatus, activateSIM and barrSIM and then implementing that interface for each provider. So class Provider1 implements Provider - Then use a Factory to create the required class depending on user selected SIM card and invoking the method selected. This would work fine if all providers offered the same methods but they don't - there are a subset which are common but some providers offer extra methods - how can I implement that flexibly ? How can I deal with the processes where the workflow is different - ie some methods require and API call and value returned and some require an email to be sent and the next stage of the process doesn't start until the email reply is recieved ... Please help ! (I hope this is a readable question and that this is the correct place to be asking) Update I guess what I'm trying to avoid is a big if or switch / case statement - some design pattern that gives me a flexible approach to implementing this kind of fluid workflow .. anyone ?

• Getting wireless N to work on Dell Vostro 3300?

  I have a Dell Vostro 3300, which has a Broadcom BCM4313 wireless. The point is that I cannot make it work in N mode. NetwotkManager applet says I'm on 54 Mbit/s. Of course, my wireless router is N capable. I've double checked. Anyone knows what to do? • How to disable VGA

  If i run lspci | grep VGA I get below output which tells me below VGA cards are present on my computer. 01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation GT216 [GeForce GT 220] (rev a2) 08:02.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc ES1000 (rev 02) The ES1000 is an onboard card which came with my machine. Do anyone know how to disable this VGA on my machine. • Are areas a good organizational feature, or just extra work?

  Do Areas in ASP.NET MVC end up being a help or just a drag in the end (because of the URL construction)? Would it be better to have subdirectories inside the main Controllers folder? or are there any other options to organizing a project?   What would be a good MVC/OOP/GRASP/SOLID structure for a search/replace functionality. Methods: search/searchNext/replace/replaceAll. I'm interested only in the PHP arhitecture and how a professional developer would implement this in it's OWN FRAMEWORK. What names would you use for the classes? What subfolders would you used in your MODEL folder? How would you connect the MODELS/CONTROLLER? This is just a arhitecture question to understand better the principles of good OOP in practice. My current implementation is very simplistic using a service model: /controller/SearchReplaceController.php /models/services/SearchReplaceService.php The problem with this is I know I'm breaking SRP in the service but I found this somehow acceptable. Also creating a service does not feel like the best solution for this.

I have issues with the MoveBy in 2 different projects, so maybe I'm missing something in the setup... But I can't figure what! The instruction is like this: this.platform1Sprite.runAction(cc.MoveBy.create(1, cc.p(200, 0))); I don't get any error, simply it doesn't work. platform1Sprite is a Sprite. • Is is OK to use a non-primary key as the id in a rails resource?

  I am getting ready to set up a resource for some new api calls to my rails application. I am planning on calling the resource devices ie resources :devices This is going to represent a android mobile devices I know this will get me routes such as GET devices/:id In most cases :id would be an integer representing the primary key, and in the controller we would use :id as such: GET devices/1 @device = Device.find(params[:id]) In this case I would like to use :id as the google_cloud_messaging_reg_id So I would like to have requests like this: GET devices/some_long_gcm_id and then in the controller , just us params[:id] to look up the device by the gcm registration id. This seem more natural, since the device will know it's gcm id rather than it's rails integer id. Are there any reasons I should avoid doing this?
