• When to mark a user story as done in scrum?

  There is a notion in scrum that emphasizes delivery of workable units at the end of each sprint. Each workable unit also maps directly of indirectly to a user story and when in new sprint PO introduces new PBI (new user stories), this means that practically team can't always go back to previous user stories to do the rest of the job, which in turn means that when you implement a user story, you should do it as complete as it's known to the team in that time, and you shouldn't forget anything (something like "I'm sorry, I've forgotten to implement validation for that input control" or "I didn't know that cross-browser check is part of the user story"). At the other hand, test, backward compatibility, acceptance criteria, deployment and more and more concepts come after each user story. So, when can team members know that the user story is done completely, not just for demo, and start a new one?

• JavaOne and Oracle Open World Community Run - Monday, Oct 1, 6:17am PT

  Following the tradition from last year, inviting all JavaOne and Oracle Open World attendees to run with me in one of the 10 best cities to run in the US. The running route will start at Ferry Plaza on Embarcadero, go through Fisherman's Wharf, straight up Hyde St, couple of loops around Crooked Street and then back the same route to end at Ferry Plaza. Here is the complete clickable map: The Hyde Street (~300ft in 0.75 miles) and Lombard (~200 ft in 0.15 mile) are challenging elevations and you may cover them once only. Alternatively you may take a simpler route out-and-back by running further up to Marina and Crissy Field. When ? • Cuda vs OpenCL - opinions

  Interested in peoples opinions of Cuda vs openCL following NVidia's Cuda4 release. I had originally gone with openCL since cross platform, open standards are a good thing(tm). I assumed NVidia would fall into line as they had done with openGL. But having talked to some NVidia people, they (naturaly) claim that they will concentrate on CUDA and openCL is hampered by having committees and having to please everyone - like openGL. And with the new tools and libs in CUDA it's hard to argue with that. -I'm in a fairly technical market so I can require the users to have particular HW.

• PHP security regarding login

  I have read a lot about PHP login security recently, but many questions on Stack Overflow regarding security are outdated. I understand bcrypt is one of the best ways of hashing passwords today. However, for my site, I believe sha512 will do very well, at least to begin with. (I mean bcrypt is for bigger sites, sites that require high security, right?) I´m also wonder about salting. Is it necessary for every password to have its own unique salt? Should I have one field for the salt and one for the password in my database table? What would be a decent salt today? Should I join the username together with the password and add a random word/letter/special character combination to it? Thanks for your help!

The elders among you might remember a GNOME 1.4 usability study I presented at GUADEC in 2001, for example, which was primarily the handiwork of a previous incarnation of sxDesign… I pretty much just turned up at the end to steal the glory for the Desktop team. In your face, people I'm going to be working with now!2 1 A move I was first approached about making in about 2003, I think… who says I'm rubbish at making snap decisions? 2 I'm not really. They all left years ago.

• JDK bug migration: components and subcomponents

  One subtask of the JDK migration from the legacy bug tracking system to JIRA was reclassifying bugs from a three-level taxonomy in the legacy system, (product, category, subcategory), to a fundamentally two-level scheme in our customized JIRA instance, (component, subcomponent). In the JDK JIRA system, there is technically a third project-level classification, but by design a large majority of JDK-related bugs were migrated into a single "JDK" project. In the end, over 450 legacy subcategories were simplified into about 120 subcomponents in JIRA. The 120 subcomponents are distributed among 17 components. A rule of thumb used was that a subcategory had to have at least 50 bugs in it for it to be retained. Below is a listing the component / subcomponent classification of the JDK JIRA project along with some notes and guidance on which OpenJDK email addresses cover different areas. Eventually, a separate incidents project to host new issues filed at bugs.sun.com will use a slightly simplified version of this scheme. The preponderance of bugs and subcomponents for the JDK are in library-related areas, with components named foo-libs and subcomponents primarily named after packages. While there was an overall condensation of subcomponents in the migration, in some cases long-standing informal divisions in core libraries based on naming conventions in the description were promoted to formal subcomponents. For example, hundreds of bugs in the java.util subcomponent whose descriptions started with "(coll)" were moved into java.util:collections. Some of this characters are involved in physics and game logic but others are only graphic characters. For what i know the only way i can achive this result is to create each character node with or without physic body and animate each character with a texture atlas. In this way i think that i'll have many performance problems, (the characters will be something like 100/150) even if i'll apply all the performance tips that i know... My question is: with large numbers of characters there another programming pattern that i must follow ? What is the approch of game like simcity,simpsons tapped out for ios,etc... that have so many animation at the same time?
