• Remote Graphics Diagnostics with Windows RT 8.1 and Visual Studio 2013

While writing that post I was testing out various features to try to make sure everything worked as expected. I had some trouble getting Remote Graphics Diagnostics (a/k/a remote graphics debugging) working on my first generation Surface RT (upgraded to Windows RT 8.1). It was more strange since I could use remote debugging when doing CPU debugging; it was just graphics debugging that was causing trouble. After some discussions with the great folks who work on the graphics tools in Visual Studio, they were able to repro the problem and recommend a solution. My Surface RT needed the ARM Kits policy installed on it. Once I followed the instructions on the previous link, I could successfully use Remote Graphics Diagnostics on my Surface RT. Please note that this requires Windows RT 8.1 RTM (i.e. not Preview) and that Remote Graphics Diagnostics on ARM only works when you are using Visual Studio 2013 as it is a new feature (it should work just fine using the Express for Windows version). Also, when I installed the ARM Kits policy I needed to do two things to get it to work properly. First, when following the “How to install the Kits policy” instructions, I needed to copy the SecureBoot folder into Program Files on my Surface RT (specifically, I copied the SecureBoot folder to “C:\Program Files\Windows Kits\8.1\bin\arm\” on my Surface RT, creating any necessary directories). It may work if it’s in any system folder; I didn’t test any others after I got it working. I had initially put it in my Downloads folder and tried installing it from there. When the machine restarted it displayed a worrisome error message. I repeatedly pressed the button that would allow me to retry and eventually the machine rebooted and managed to recover itself to its previous state. Second, I needed to install it as an Administrator. The instructions say that this might be necessary. For me it was. This is a Remote Graphics Diagnostics is a great new feature in Visual Studio 2013 so I definitely encourage all of you to check it out!

• Storing a Hex Grid

  I've been creating a small hex grid framework for Unity3D and have come to the following dilema. This is my coordinate system (taken from here) Link because I'm a new user It all works pretty nicely except for the fact I have no idea how to store it. I originally intended to store this in a 2D array and use images to generate my maps. One problem was that it had negative values (this was easily fixed by offsetting the coordinates a bit). However, due to this coordinate system, such an image or bitmap would have to be diamond shaped - and since these structures are square shaped, this would cause a lot of headaches even if I hack something together. Is there anything I'm missing that could fix this? I recall seeing a forum post regarding this in the unity forums but I can no longer find the link. Is writing a set of coordinate translators the best solution here? If you guys think it would be helpful, I can post code and images of my problem.

• A Better Way To Extract Date From DateTime Columns [SQL Server]

  Quite a long ago I wrote about a SQL Server programming tip on how to extract date part from a DATETIME column. The post discusses about using of T SQL function convert() to get date part. One of the readers of the post, tipped me about a better way of extracting date part and here is the SQL query he sent to us SELECT DateAdd(day, DateDiff(day, 0, getdate()), 0); In clean way this query trims off time part from the DATETIME value. I rate this solution better than the one I wrote long ago as this one does not depend on any string operations. According the commenter, this method is faster compared to the other. What do you say? • Can't access my partitions

  I have asked this question some time before as well - but here is the main problem out: MBR was defect, I used Boot-Repair that I could access my Win-xp partition With windows ext3 readers I can't access Under live-cds i can't access to my Ubuntu partition (not able to mount them) I didn't format them accidentialy or earsed them nor overwrote them. • Asus Machine fails to start due to missing msvcr.dll - what?

  So first off a thanks to the internet, knoppix and a post over at http://www.overclock.net/windows/879553-msvcr80-dll-missing-catastrophic-failure.html   My Symptoms: my laptop would not boot.  Would not let me get anywhere.  Just like the symptoms in the post.   Thankfully, all I had to do was go rename my avg directory and all was good.  But I needed something to boot from and I knew and trusted Knoppix from my past linux experimental days.    If it wasn't for Knoppix, I would have probably reformatted my machine and I didn't want that.

• Thumbnail preview rotator on mouse-over HOW IS THAT CALLED?

  I've been searching for hours now but can't get any tutorial on this. I have these thumbnails on my homepage which are the first images of their corresponding posts. What I want is that when I mouse-over a post on the homepage... the corresponding thumbnail should also show/rotate the other images of that particular post... bit like a sneak-peak image rotator... Does anyone know where I can get a tutorial regarding this? How's this called? It seems like I'm searching for the wrong keywords on google as I can't find anything.

• dpkg reports error on package icaclient

  I installed the icaclient (it's a client for Citrix) a while back. I don't exactly remember what I did to get it working but it was enervating. I had to install some old packages not even avaiable for ubuntu (12.04) and in the end I used some stuff from old rpms. Anyway the client is more or less working now but I always get a dpkg error when installing or updating something. The (translated) error message is something like: dpkg: Error while processing icaclient:i386 (--configure): subprocess installed post-installation-script return errorcode 2 I just want to tell dpkg to ignore this or remove this post-install-script but I don't know how. Thanks!

• High-Powered Sites for low Cost

  Ahh, I am experiencing the intimidation of my very first post - visible by the whole world. Ok, here goes.   This first post is nothing exceptional.  It is simply a recommendation based (fittingly, I suppose) upon the job search you may be gearing up for.  I find myself in this very situation right now.  And, I will take my own recommendation after posting this entry. Job-Seekers: To the left you will notice two links under "Recommended Learning".  I have found these links to be invaluable when it comes to re-tooling, re-familiarizing, or otherwise resharping my skills when looking for that next job. Often, you will find job-postings with the text, usually posted after a laborious list of qualifications indicating the company's desire to hire candidates who know what they are doing: "...Looking for a candidate who can hit the ground running...".  The interesting thing about this post to me is I've encountered many individuals who, after speaking and working with them for some time, I've realized are perfectly capable of hitting the ground running - and FAST.  But what if they speed off in the wrong direction? The next time you spearhead a major task in your job, ask yourself: Am I headed in the wrong direction?  There are many ways to do this.  In fact, I've found in this new field there are more tempting ways to steer your project in the wrong direction than there are good ones.  I don't want to suggest that every one of my posts will fall into the "right direction" category, however I do think a healthy dose of introspection of the pros and cons will always be beneficial before you set off. That said, allow me to expound on the previously mentioned links. These web sites are invaluable.  They demonstrate the capabilities of existing as well as new and upcoming tools available in several IDE's.  I've viewed many tutorials in LearnVisualStudio.NET, and only one or two so far in TrainingSpot, however I've been delighted in their simplicity and straightforward approach to proper usage of the particular tool or concept being discussed.  They have not (so far in my experience) demonstrated ways in which to use the tools that become cumbersome, impractical, or error-prone. Each website has step-by-step videos that can be paused, replayed, and most importantly, they are done in real time.  As the author is typing, the viewer gets to experience the coding experience from a first-person perspective, including syntax errors, unexpected behaviors, IDE setup idiosyncracies, everything.  A subtle value I've gained from these videos is that a certain degree of confusion and introspection is normal when working with new tools and exploring new paths.  They (as well as your own experience) are not to be feared, but enjoyed.  I highly recommend them.   If I'm making a web application which integrates with a server-side backend, would it be considered best practice to use HTTP methods semantically? That is, for example, if I'm fetching data (e.g., to populate a menu, etc.), I would use GET, but to update data (e.g., save a record), I would use POST. (I realise there are other methods that may be even more appropriate, but we need to consider browser support.) I can see the benefits of this in the sense that it's effectively a RESTful API, but at a slightly increased development cost.   When building a public facing website that allows visitors to post comments, link to media and/or upload media (e.g. audio, video, images) ... what should I do to protect myself legally in the case such visitors link to or upload content that they shouldn't (e.g. adult oriented media, copyrighted images and/or media owned by someone else, etc...)? • Online job application

  I am trying to add an application to my site where I can post job openings with my company and allow people to apply online. Can someone recommend a service or app already in existence for this purpose? I tried googling it, but could not find a set of search terms that did not return endless sites for job seekers. This is a (very) small business and I do not expect to have more than a few openings at any time, but what I am actually interested in is having a repository of interested job seekers to have on file. Then when people ask me about openings, I could just refer them to the page and they could apply. Then, if we have an opening, we could look through the list of candidates and if we can't fill the position(s) from that list, we could post the job and advertise to fill the position.

• Single Full Name field in registration form user submits only first what to enter in my backend as last?

  On a registration form I have a single input called Full Name. The strings are parsed with http://code.google.com/p/php-name-parser/ so if a person enters their full name middle or any quantity of strings it's handled just fine and the app creates the user in a billing system with it's API. The form validates and checks for two strings in the field otherwise it won't post. I'd like to remove this validation but a last name is required by the API. You cannot post an empty last name to the API. Users are signing up for a trial so I don't want them having to deal with many form fields. The only place the last name shows up visible to the user is in their account settings page. If they end their trial and start a paid plan they'd have to enter their billing details which asks with two fields for their First, Last, and other billing information. What is an alternative to submitting "Doe", "Default", "Empty" in place of them not filling in their last name?

  I tried installing Ubuntu on my recently purchased (for this purpose!) Nexus 7 32Gb, with the Cellular option. When I rebooted with Ubuntu, it didn't come up. I know, I need to post the errors I received. I was in a hurry to get back to something usable for the holiday (on the road, Thanksgiving, etc.), so I just reinstalled Android for now. When I have time, I'll post more of the errors. All I remember right now is that it dropped into busybox and I didn't have a keyboard or any way to attach one. (I used the 32Gb Ubuntu, by the way.) Have others seen this?

I've tried moving the entire site to the WWW directory, but then all my forms return "The HTTP verb POST used to access path is not allowed". Additionally, all the solutions I've found online only work on a page by page basis. Is there a simpler/faster way to migrate a large website containing many forms to IIS7?
