  • Where to go from PHP?

    - by dabito
I'm a seasoned PHP programmer and I really like the way it works and find it very fun to work with (performance could be improved and some functions renamed, but nothing too serious). However, I took a java seminar and now Im very interested in using GWT for upcomming projects, although I think the learning curve can be steep. Should I really go through with this change (PHP JAVA)? Where to begin?

  • R Package for Bayesian Belief Networks

    - by user187395
Is anyone aware of an R package for Bayesian Belief Networks (BBN) that can handle latent (hidden) nodes? I am referring to process learning the structure and the parameters of the model. Based on the documentation, the "bnlearn" package does not provide for such capability. In addition, is anyone aware of R packages that allow for making inferences and sensitivity analysis for BBN? Thank you in advance.

  • Why is it so hard to find a C++ 3d game tutorial

    - by Dave
I'm planning on learning 3d game development for the iphone using a 3d engine, but because of lack of tutorials for the iphone I was planning on using C++ game tutorials and making the necessary changes. The problem is that I've had limited success when searching for things such as 'c++ 3d fps tutorial ' I dont really get anything useful. Are there any 3d c++ tutorials you can recommend?

  • How to filter a list in J?

    - by Gregory Higley
I'm currently learning the fascinating J programming language, but one thing I have not been able to figure out is how to filter a list. Suppose I have the arbitrary list 3 2 2 7 7 2 9 and I want to remove the 2s but leave everything else unchanged, i.e., my result would be 3 7 7 9. How on earth do I do this?

  • I simple search controller that stores search history, should I use resource routing or non-resource?

    - by vfilby
I am learning rails and am toying with a simple web-app that integrates with flickr to search photos based on user given criteria and store the query in a search history table. I am seeking the best or 'rails' way of handling this. Should I setup a controller and non-resource routes that handle the search and store the data in a custom table; or should I create a resource for queries with a resource route and an additional path for search?

  • Infinite loop in haskell? (newbie)

I'm just learning Haskell. I thought this would produce a factorial function... (within ghci) Prelude let ft 0 = 1 Prelude let ft n = n * ft (n - 1) Prelude ft 5 (hangs indefinitely, until ^C). Can someone point me in the right direction? Thanks!

  • How many programming jobs are there that require German/French language ?

    - by HJ-INCPP
Hello, I want to improve my chances getting a job (entry-level:programming) by learning another language. How many jobs that require exclusively French, German, English are there ? Which is better to learn (more/better jobs): French or German ? Is it worth it (or should I learn another programming language instead :D) ? Thank you. P.S I live in Romania, I (think I) know English

  • Is it Bad Practice to use C++ only for the STL containers?

    - by gmatt
First a little background ... In what follows, I use C,C++ and Java for coding (general) algorithms, not gui's and fancy program's with interfaces, but simple command line algorithms and libraries. I started out learning about programming in Java. I got pretty good with Java and I learned to use the Java containers a lot as they tend to reduce complexity of book keeping while guaranteeing great performance. I intermittently used C++, but I was definitely not as good with it as with Java and it felt cumbersome. I did not know C++ enough to work in it without having to look up every single function and so I quickly reverted back to sticking to Java as much as possible. I then made a sudden transition into cracking and hacking in assembly language, because I felt I was concentrated too much attention on a much too high level language and I needed more experience with how a CPU interacts with memory and whats really going on with the 1's and 0's. I have to admit this was one of the most educational and fun experiences I've had with computers to date. For obviously reasons, I could not use assembly language to code on a daily basis, it was mostly reserved for fun diversions. After learning more about the computer through this experience I then realized that C++ is so much closer to the "level of 1's and 0's" than Java was, but I still felt it to be incredibly obtuse, like a swiss army knife with far too many gizmos to do any one task with elegance. I decided to give plain vanilla C a try, and I quickly fell in love. It was a happy medium between simplicity and enough "micromanagent" to not abstract what is really going on. However, I did miss one thing about Java: the containers. In particular, a simple container (like the stl vector) that expands dynamically in size is incredibly useful, but quite a pain to have to implement in C every time. Hence my code currently looks like almost entirely C with containers from C++ thrown in, the only feature I use from C++. I'd like to know if its consider okay in practice to use just one feature of C++, and ignore the rest in favor of C type code?

  • Simple PHP ORM

    - by booch
I'm looking for an ORM (Object-Relational Mapper) for PHP. I want something simple that I can get started with quickly. I'm used to ActiveRecord in Rails, but I don't need a full framework. My partner knows PHP, but is not really a programmer, and learning a framework would take more time than the project. Thanks, Craig

  • Why is dereferencing a pointer called dereferencing?

    - by optician
Why is dereferencing called dereferencing? I'm just learning pointers properly, and I'd like to know why dereferencing is called that. It confused me as it sounds like you are removing a reference, rather than going via the pointer to the destination. Can anyone explain why it is called this? To me something like destination or pointed_to_value would make more sense.

  • can some one give me a sample gzip code for htaccess?

    - by Haroldo
I'm keen to get started experimenting with gzip, but like i used to find php.net when i first started learning php, the apache documentation confuses me a bit. http://httpd.apache.org/docs/2.0/mod/mod_deflate.html I'd really appreciate a sample htaccess file to have a look at if anyone's got one? Also are there things which should be changed in the htconf file instead of htaccess if I'm enabling gzipping server-wide? Sorry i'm a newb with apache!

  • How can a Rails newbie find a job as a Rails developer?

    - by esavard
I'm a Ruby on Rails newbie. I'm learning Rails in my spare time (my day job is C++ developer) and I like it. I would like to be paid to do Rails development full-time instead of C++. How can I find a job in Rails when most job offering requires 2-5 years of Rails experience? What is the most effective strategy to get some credibility as a Rails Developer? Thanks in advance for your answers.

  • [NUnit+Moq] Guidelines for using Assert versus Verify

    - by emddudley
I'm new to unit testing, and I'm learning how to use NUnit and Moq. NUnit provides Assert syntax for testing conditions in my unit tests, while Moq provides some Verify functions. To some extent these seem to provide the same functionality. How do I know when it's more appropriate to use Assert or Verify? Maybe Assert is better for confirming state, and Verify is better for confirming behavior (Classical versus Mockist)?
