  Dell Inspiron 1210 mini Blank Screen on boot 12.04 If I mash buttons I get to a gray screen then the login screen and into the desktop but normally I turn on the laptop and I see a black screen with a cursor then a purple screen then it just goes black. I can hit ctrl alt F1 or F2 and get a prompt. I've tried using the poulsbo ppa driver script fix but that doesn't work. I don't knwo what to do now. I have the OS installed and when I did get into the OS by mashing buttons I installed updates and wireless adapter drivers. It works but if I reboot I jsut get to the black screen and have no idea what to do. What needs to be done so that I can just boot up and see the login screen!?

  I have a Drupal based web site on a relative small vserver (512MB RAM). Recently the website begins to return php out of memory messages like this: Fatal error: Out of memory (allocated 17039360) (tried to allocate 77824 bytes) in /home/... All php.ini memory limit parameters are set to off (-1). Propably the website has gained of complexity, content, etc. But I cannot interpret fine that message: Does that mean that the whole request has allocated 17MB(?) right now and cannot get 7MB(?) more from the OS. Has the web server spend all memory or has the OS no more memory to allocate ? I'm not shure if the memory overhead is coming from the web server or another service, because when I get the out-of-memoy message I can't get into the server with ssh. After a while all runs fine again.

• Why does IDLE continue to crash? [migrated]

  Idle keeps crashing and I can't figure it out. After restarting the computer and reinstalling Python, none of which seemed to work, I looked to my peers and was told to "install one of the Tcl/Tk". After getting another opinion I was also told that I already had this and found it to be true but decided to try it anyway since it continued to crash. Nothing has improved and I have an assignment due. Any ideas on why this continues to happen and what I can do to fix the crash?   I have widows 8 (Pre-installed), and I was not a fan. So I thought I would try Ubuntu as many people from what I hear that use it, like it, and hey, free OS. Well before I was able to do all the instalations, I had to goto work, so my girlfriend (whio is not at all tech savy) decided to help. She told me she installed it, (It popped up with a thank you for installing message) She then shut it off. When she turned it on, when I turn it on, I boot right to windows, I have never installed a secondary OS. And I was hoping someone with more experiance than I could walk me through what I need to do in order to be able to dual boot Ubuntu version is 14.04 and 64bit

  I'm having a trouble when trying to install Skype on my Ubuntu 12.04.1 x64. My notebook have compatible hardware with Ubuntu. My previous OS installed on this machine was the Ubuntu 12.04 x64 and Skype was working great, but I got a formatation and I installed the New ubuntu 12.04.1. When I try to install by the Ubuntu software Center, or by the sudo apt-get install skype, I get this error message (in Portuguese) : "Os pacotes a seguir têm dependências desencontradas: skype: Depend: skype-bin E: impossivel corrigir problemas, você manteve (hold) pacotes quebrados." Something like i have the skype-bin package missing (or broken). I can't find it on Software center. I tried to install it by downloading a deb package with the skype-bin package but it ask for a lot another packages! I tried install the .deb package from the official Skype site, but I got the same error! Any Help? Sorry about my bad English, I'm Brazilian

  I am new to Ubuntu, recently I installed ubuntu 12.04 in Vm Player (Virtual Machine) on my Dell laptop having windows 7 ultimate 32 bit for just to check the security of my wireless network and want to crack the WiFi (WPA-PSK) password but in ubuntu it does not show the wireless network it shows the 2 arrow sign as i have not connect the ethernet cable to my laptop and connected through WiFi on my main OS (windows 7) but it shows the wired network and internet is working but it does not show wifi connection. On windows 7 WiFi is connected and showing the WiFi connection and working correctly.But my main motive is to crack the WiFi password as it can't detect WiFi network so what to do?   I was recently assigned reading from the Tanenbaum-Torvalds debates in my OS class. In the debates, Tanenbaum makes some predictions: Microkernels are the future x86 will die out and RISC architectures will dominate the market (5 years from then) everyone will be running a free GNU OS I was a one year old when the debates happened, so I lack historical intuition. Why have these predictions not panned out? It seems to me, that from Tanenbaum's perspective, they're pretty reasonable predictions of the future. What happened so that they didn't come to pass?

• Can I launch Windows 8 with grub?

  I accidentally deleted the boot loader for Windows 8 (I think). Here is the situation: I just got a new computer with 2 HDD (sda, sdb). Now, all of the windows OS was installed on sdb (all except for about 210 MB on sda). I formatted sda and installed Kubuntu 12.04.2 (which only loads the terminal because it says it can't find a screen, but that's another story!) Now, my Windows 8 data and NTFS partitions, etc. are still on sdb and untouched. Unfortunately, I cannot see an option to boot into Windows 8 in grub, so is there a way that I can go about using grub to point to the Windows 8 OS? The only other option I can think of is to buy a fresh copy of Windows 8 and install it fresh (no, I didn't create a backup USB because I'm an idiot ...)

  Hello, my name is Anthony and I'm new to Ubuntu and any other Linux OS for that matter. My question concerns downloading a program, and then installing it. The program is called Remotedroid, it lets you use your phone as a wireless keyboard and mouse. I'm use to windows automatically starting setup upon download and cant figure out how to initiate the install in Ubuntu. The programs website says its compatible with Linux OS and the readme file says to just click the extension remotedroidserver.jar to use, but it wont work and none of the files do anything. I've unzipped all the files and my Java is all up to date as far as i know, I think. I'm just not getting how to run a setup in Ubuntu. I looked around this site for the answer but came up with nothing so if someone could maybe offer some insight I would be grateful. Thank you.

• Installing 12.10 on Dell r710

  I have been trying to install Ubuntu 12.10 on a Dell r710. I have 6 disks in each 2 TB. I setup a raid 5 in the HW raid controller with all drives, and proceeded with the OS install. When the partitioner runs it fails to create / for some reason. I then tried just setting up a simple raid 1 with 2 drives in the HW controller, and doing the OS install again. The installer runs fine this time. Once trying to boot I then get a kernel panic of 'Target File System doesn't have requested /sbin/init' as well as a bunch of 'deleted inode referenced'. Can someone tell me what I am doing wrong here?

  I am currently running Fedora and would like to duel boot with Ubuntu. I do not want to replace Fedora, I would like to keep it as my main OS. However, when using the Ubuntu installer I only get the option to either: "Replace Fedora release 20 (Heisenbug) with Ubuntu" or "Something else" Is there I way I can install ubuntu alongside Fedora without deleting it? If so, as I would like fedora to be my main OS, is there also a way to make it the top grub option? I have tried partitioning with gparted however I can't split the fedora partition, it says it is all used however I have only used about 100/500GB. I am trying to install ubuntu 13.10 off a live USB stick, I will upgrade to 14.04 when I install it but don't want to make a new live USB.

• Computer restarts when I choose my Lucid install from GRUB

  Hey, I have 4 OS's on my netbook, it's really more a toy. However, in my main OS (Ubuntu Lucid) is some data I don't like to lose. Today, whenever I choose this install from GRUB, the netbook (Asus eeePC 1001P if it's of help) waits 5 seconds (no kernel messages) and then reboots. The other entries (backtrack, Linux From Scratch, Windows XP) work fine. Can anyone hint me to where the error could be? It's not GRUB, right? So a reinstall wouldn't help? Is it the kernel? I'm afraid I didn't remember when and what the most recent automatic updates were.
