• Make an agenda view google calendar entry display initially as if it had been clicked

  So I've got a google calendar embedded in my web page. It's set to agenda view so when you click on an entry it expands and shows you more information on the entry. I'd like to be able to link to the page w/ the embedded calendar from elsewhere, and have a specific entry already expanded (as if it had been clicked). Is this even possible? I'm not really sure where to start. PS: I don't have enough rep on this SE to create tags... and there isn't already a tag for "google-calendar"...

• SEO penalty for "duplicate" content when a site's also accessible via another domain name?

  While testing searches for keywords on my site, I notice that a mirror of it at http://a8.8d.344a.static.theplanet.com/ sometimes appears at the top result rather than my primary domain. It looks like this is an alternative address for my server. Will the presence of identical content at this domain and at my primary domain result in a Google penalty? If so, what can I do about it? • My application's bounce rate jumped from 30% to 80% overnight

  My application is provided as a service that is embedded in other sites. I have google analytics installed on the login popup dialog which is a page of my application, which is opened from the host site (OAuth). About a week ago, I've noticed a sharp decrease in the number of new users registrations and a jump in the bounce rate (from ~30% to ~80%). This happened without any change in the application. I looked into technical parameters like page load time and error rates, but could not see any change in there. Any ideas what can cause this behavior?

• Recommendations for a network of student-related content

  I am running a network of websites with notes, homeworks, essays, etc. where users share their own content. I'm having real trouble with the latest Google updates (penguin, panda, etc) because the content is mainly poor-quality and with the same topic. For that reason, I want to create more websites and have more probabilites to appear in the SERPs. My question is: does Google analyzes related websites in order to exclude it from the results? I've think about distribute the websites around the world, in different hostings, but I'm afraid that Google would link it by their analytics, webmaster tools or adsense account, is that possible? What other recommendations do you have?

  I have a php template which has one index.php and all the different pages (content1.html, content2.html etc) are shown on the index.phppage. So for example I can open www.example.com/index.php?content1 and it will show the content1.html. Now what I would like is this: Often you see websites where the url is like: www.example.com/this-is-the-content I know how to do this with an exclamation mark like www.example.com/?content1 <-- here you just dont write the index.php. But how can I do an url name, which is completely different from the filename? For example www.example.com/this-is-some-page would show me the content of index.php?content1

• Looking for full web based booking system

  I've searched around here but could not find any booking system that would suit my need. I hope maybe you can help me out. I've already seen question #11379 over here. Solutions provided there are not helping and scripts not interesting. I'm looking for a booking system that support infinite number of hotels/rooms/pricingschemes. There should be unlimited number of hotel owner/users, who can access control panel and set availability for their hotel. Or create seasonal prices and adjust them. I should be able to have 15% booking fee paid through credit cart. I can work on integration with my system, it just needs to have correct APi/functionality to support this. I love wordpress so if there are some nice plugins for that, I'm open for suggestions. But this is not a must. It should be php/mysql based as I'm not good at anything else :)

The reason why I am asking for help now is that I don't have a clue why my newly added accordion(s) do not expand upon being clicked. I've got a feeling it may be due to the newly added code as I was having problems using my code in the file so instead I looked at the source and copied the accordion level to be used and all appears to look fine apart from them not expanding.   Will adding the UA code of the live site to a revision site affect anything adversely? They are, technically, two different sites with different metrics. I don't want to lose the old data when I initiate the new site, of course. I would also like to work on setting up the new analytics page while the revision site is in development.   I was thinking about developing a small community website where people of a certain profession can register and post their own blogs (Which includes an optional photo). I then got to thinking about how people might use this and the fact that if they are given the option to add a photo, they might be likely to use one that they simply find on Google, another social network or even an existing online blog/magazine article. So how do I cover myself from getting a fine slapped on me and to make it purely the fault of the individual uploader? I plan on having an option where the user can credit a photo by typing in the original photographers name & web link (optional) and to make them tick a check box stating that the post is their own content and that they have permission to use any images but is that enough to cover myself? How do other sites do it?

• How can I turn on compression for my IIS 7 web sites?

I am familiar with making changes to Web.Config but not sure about making IIS7 changes. What makes it more difficult is that I am using Windows Azure where new images are created every time I publish. Can someone explain if there's more than one way to turn on compression and how I can do it.

• Is my project a web site or a mobile app?

  I am a web developer. I have been developing web sites professionally for 15+ years using ColdFusion, SQL Server, and jQuery. I am doing a project for a client that uses the above technologies. The site has a mobile facet too. For that, I am using jQuery Mobile. The site enables retail store personnel to gather a store customer's preferences using any smart phone or tablet. The store personnel just needs to access a special link via a QR code and a login. Anyone can easily access the site from a PC's browser, too. Some sources suggest that mobile apps must be downloaded and installed using a third party, such as from Google, Amazon, or Apple. Others sources suggest that any information designed for use on mobile device is a mobile app. Regarding the site that is specifically designed for use by mobile devices that extensively uses jQuery Mobile, is this a "web site" or a "mobile app"? What is the "proper" description for this type of site? My customer insists that it is one and not the other. I insist that it is the other and not the one. Can you help me clarify this?

  its been about a week i have changed my url from non www to www version it was done by my host provider .....now i want to ask how much time does google take to remove my sitename.com from indexing and replace it with www.sitename.com (site redirection has been already done by host provider )as it is still showing old ones my new urls are indexed but my main url www.sitename.com is not indexed...or so do i have to remove those old urls personally...its been already about 5-6 days?????

  I really do not want to install Linux at the moment, I would have to borrow a USB key, move files, format it, flash it, format it again, move files back, give it back... What would you recommend that is lightweight, easily and cleanly uninstallable afterwards (will install Linux when I get a new DVD-ROM, which will be in ~2 weeks), that also supports PHP and SQL? To be precise, I want to install a Wordpress blog, a few plugins, etc, and develop a theme. If there is no such thing for Windows (7, x64 if that matters), let me know too, I will borrow the USB key then (even though it's a pain).

• 301 re-direct all external links to new domain

  I have changed the main domain to a sub-domain & would like to re-direct all external links to the new sub domain. Have read a few articles but having no luck editing the .htaccess as it might be interfering with all the rules in there. Old: www.example.co.uk New: https://secure.example.co.uk The current rules are quite handy because it seems to have sorted out the structure for all internal links. It has even updated the file path for images (or this could just be wordpress as the url was updated under general settings). • Dedicated Servers: Is one better then two for LAMP pseudo HA setup? [closed]

  Possible Duplicate: How to find web hosting that meets my requirements? I know there are zillions of commentary about hosting out there, but I haven't read much about this. Our current well known host is having too many problems, the hardware we are on it subpar, and I'm ready to leave. A day of downtime can cost as much as our monthly hosting bill. A month of bad performance is just killing us right now, user and google wise. I'm wondering about running two dedicated boxes for LAMP, one running as the primary Nginx/Apache (proxy pass), and the other as the MySQL box. Running a single box scares the bejesus out of me because who knows how long it will take anyone to fix a raid card or whatever. The idea is to set this up using some sort of failover system using pacemaker and heartbeat. If one server goes down the other can take over for the other running both web and db. There are some good articles over at Linode about this. I have a few DBs that are 1GB+ and would like to load them into memory. Because of this, I'm shying away from a Linode HA setup because for the price I could do it with two dedicated like I described. Am I mad or an idiot? What are people out there doing for pseodu high availability good performance setups under $400/month? I'm a webmaster; I do a lot of things none of it that well :)

  I have a series of utilities to generate Google sitemaps for my whole site. These files are massive, and slow to build. We want to start telling Google these pages are mobile-crawl-able too, by adding them to mobile sitemaps, but the documentation is unclear if I need to specify physically different files for my mobile URLs than for my normal ones.   On this official Google page about canonical links it says: Can rel="canonical" be a redirect? Yes, you can specify a URL that redirects as a canonical URL. Google will then process the redirect as usual and try to index it. There is no mention that this might dilute the impact of the canonical link. However, Google has made clear elsewhere that 301 redirects do dilute PageRank - roughly as much as a link dilutes PageRank. Is that relevant here? I'm assuming the answer is "no" but I wanted to confirm. Relevant but not duplicate: Does Rel=Canonical Pass PR from Links or Just Fix Dup Content.

• robots.txt, how effective is it and how long does it take?

  We recently updated the site to a single page site using jQuery to slide between "pages". So we now have only index.php. When you search the company on engines such as Google, you get the site and a listing of its sub pages which now lead to outdated pages. Our plan doesn't allow us to edit the .htaccess and the old pages are .html docs so I cannot use PHP redirects either. So if I put in place a robots.txt telling the engines to not crawl beyond index.php, how effective will this be in preventing/removing crawled sub pages. And rough guess, how long before the search engines would update?

• Tracking down memory issues affecting a website

  I've got a website (Wordpress based) that became unresponsive. I SSH'd into the server and saw that we were out of memory. Errors in my apache log files indicated the same... things failing to be allocated due to lack of memory). Restarting the server fixes it. So I look in access.log and error.log around the time of the incident but I see nothing strange. No extra traffic, no unusual requests. In fact the only request around the time of the problem was one from Googlebot for an rss feed... at that point I start to see 500 response codes in the logs until the machine was rebooted. I look in message.log hoping to see something but there is nothing at all for that entire day (which is odd as there are entries for every other day). The site has a large amount of memory allocated to it and normally runs using about 30% of what is available. My question... how would you go about trying to track this down at this point? What are some other log files I could check or strategies I could take?

• Images Loading Very Slowly

  I'm currently working on optimizing my site to try to decrease load time by using Pingdom tools. I seem to be having some difficulty with long load times on images. For example, the body background for my site is a 29kb file but takes almost 500 ms to load, the majority of which is spent connecting to the server. This one seems to take the longest times but other images seem to take a lot of time as well—the majority of which seems to be spent connecting to the server. This also seems to fluctuate as I've seen the same image load in 500ms one minute and ten minutes later load in 1.5 seconds. My site is using the Modx CMS but I'm not sure if that would affect this at all. Is it more likely that this is a server issue? Is there anything that I should check or do to help alleviate these inflated 'connect' times?

I can see those cache from Way back Machine and the site was indexed in Yahoo, but not in google. Did I get my index on Google deleted because I did not update it often? Normally Google crawl often and index fast, I just got really worried if I did something wrong. Is it possible that I set something wrong in the hosting or something? Please help me

  Before patching scuttle or semanticscuttle I thought I'd ask if anyone knows of a lighter-weight/faster system to tag bookmarks and vote on them? LAMP is fine. Ideally, I should be allowed to interfere with the database directly. My actual problem is I want to administer roughly 80m bookmarks, tag them, vote on them (it's just 10 users accessing the system), but here's the thing: All of those bookmarks will change their descriptions (and title lines) at least once a day. Both systems support the del.icio.us API but my LAMP stack is unable to cope with the load.

• SEO Question - allintitle with or without quotes

  I'm trying to learn more about implementing basic SEO strategies and have been spending a lot of time refining my keywords using Google Analytics combined with manually checking them using Google's allintitle operator. However, I'm unclear on whether I should be using quotes with my allintitles. Example: allintitle: seo tips and tricks for beginners 191 results allintitle: "seo tips and tricks for beginners" 70 results My thought is that it would be more accurate to use it without quotes because that way you get a more well rounded idea of all those you are competing with. So, my question is does Google give more weight to exact matches in the title tag or does that not really matter? If someone searched for: seo tips and tricks for beginners, would they be more likely to see the ones that have that exact phrase in their title tag or does that not have any impact?

  On the html5shiv Google Code page the example usage includes an IE conditional: <!--[if lt IE 9]> <script src="dist/html5shiv.js"></script> <![endif]--> However on the html5shiv github page, the description explains: This script is the defacto way to enable use of HTML5 sectioning elements in legacy Internet Explorer, as well as default HTML5 styling in Internet Explorer 6 - 9, Safari 4.x (and iPhone 3.x), and Firefox 3.x. An obvious contradiction. So to satisfy my curiosity, for anyone who has studied the code, are there any adverse side affects to loading html5shiv in every browser (without the IE conditional)? EDIT: My goal, obviously, is to use the shiv without the IE conditional.
