• Unable to login into CentOS

  I had setup a multinode cluster using CentOS with VMware yesterday. Today when I reboot the nodes I get the below error on startup. "there is a problem with the configuration server status 256 centOS" (/usr/libexec/gconf-sanity-check-2 ) I am unable to login as root or any user as the screen is frozen. The solutions online is to change the permissions for some tmp files. My problem is I am unable to access the terminal as I cannot login. Also on reboot I do not have any recovery options in CentOS. I only see command line GRUB. I am new to linux and Hadoop.Pls help asap.

• Cross platform KVM over ethernet

  I'm not sure if this exists, but this is what I'd like to do. I have a laptop and a desktop that I work on about equally. The laptop runs windows 7 and the desktop is on kubuntu 10.04. What I want to be able to do is be able to drag my mouse accross my screen and have it act like my laptop is a second monitor. Whereby I can use my desktop mouse, drag it say to the left off of my desktop monitor, and use it on my laptop (I don't care about the keyboard, just the mouse). Is that possible? Are there any other solutions that exist? I'd prefer not to have a physical kvm switch.

• WD Elements Desktop External - Not recognised on a single computer

  My WD Elements Desktop External is no longer recognised on my main computer. It has worked fine in the past, but now all of a sudden is not detected. It does not prompt when plugged in, nor does it show up in the disc management interface or the device manager. It appears to be aware that it is plugged in however as the light on the external blinks rapidly for a short while after being plugged in. The strangest thing however is that it works fine on other computers, including my family computers and my laptop. I have attempted to troubleshoot the issue by trying various USB devices in multiple ports on each system to see if there is any correlation with the issue, but have come up with nothing that gives me an idea of what is going on. I have also attempted to format the external using my laptop, but that has not helped either. If anyone has had a similar issue, or knows of any potential solutions, please post your advice. • Is there a chroot build script somewhere?

  I am about to develop a little script to gather information for a chroot-jail. In my case this looks (at the first glance) pretty simple: The application has a clean rpm-install and did install almost all files into a sub-directory of /opt. My idea is: Do a find of all binaries Check their library-dependencies Record the results into a list Do a rsync of that list into the chroot-target-directory before startup of the application Now I wonder - ist there any script around that already does such a job (perl/bash/python)? So far I found only specialized solutions for single applications (like sftp-chroot). Update I see three close-votes for the reason "off topic". This is a question that arose because I have to install that ancient piece of software on a server at work. So if you still feel this is off-topic - leave a comment...

• Virtual bridge/switch for Windows server&client?

  I can't find a very simple application, with litle to zero configuration on both client and server side which would help one computer to bring other computers on an existing private LAN. OpenVPN seems like an overkill for this type of thing, and is really hard to get running or debug by various clueless people trying to connect. Does such a software exist? It's very odd not to. THe Windows provided VPN (PPTP over TCP and GRE) is not what I'm looking for because it is often filtered by ISPs. Only TCP and UDP solutions pls. Encryption is not needed.

• Disable CTRL + ALT + [LETTER] to produce accented variations

  After an unknown config change, CTRL + ALT + [LETTER] has started producing common accented versions of [LETTER]. I'm not a big fan of this arrangement, seeing as I've memorized all my favourite ALT + [NUMPAD SEQUENCE] references and was used to using CTRL + ALT + [LETTER] for various other application-specific commands in my text editor. The prominent result from my searching suggests that this has something to do with a switch to an 'international keyboard', and says this can be removed in the control panel or toggled by hitting ALT + SHIFT, but I can't get my system to confirm this, and the solutions (or close approximations thereof) don't work. Specifically, I've been to Control Panel\Clock, Language, and Region\Language\Advanced settings and switched the override for default input method from 'language list' to English and I've been to Control Panel\Clock, Language, and Region\Language\Language options and made sure that I only have my one input method (UK). Other than that I'm not quite sure where to look. Any ideas?

• Replicate a big, dense Windows volume over a WAN -- too big for DFS-R

  I've got a server with a LOT of small files -- many millions files, and over 1.5 TB of data. I need a decent backup strategy. Any filesystem-based backup takes too long -- just enumerating which files need to be copied takes a day. Acronis can do a disk image in 24 hours, but fails when it tries to do a differential backup the next day. DFS-R won't replicate a volume with this many files. I'm starting to look at Double Take, which seems to be able to do continuous replication. Are there other solutions that can do continuous replication at a block or sector level -- not file-by-file over a WAN?

• rsync synchronizing files only without creating folders on destination

  Is it possible with rsync to not create directories on destination? Imagine I have that source : a/ a/x.txt b/ b/y.txt And that I have this destination : a/ a/z.txt The wanted result of rsync source destination : a/ a/x.txt a/z.txt Of course my real situation involves thousand files/folders structure and I don't want solutions involving explicit list of synced folders, which I can do. I'm looking for a clean way just to prevent any folder creation on destination. By exclude or filtering... That could even be something outside rsync, like a hack with permissions if rsync can't do this... For information, this is really easy to get this kind of situations, in my case I have: A server with 2 disks, let's say A & B. And a local drive C. I usually use rsync to sync (and merge) remote A & B into local C. Then sometimes I just want to sync back some C files into A and B. (Just new Files... not non-existing folders on destination)

  Hi few days ago I formatted one of my computers (XP Home SP2 with prior updates installed). Now I am trying to install NET Framework 3.5, but display this error: [03/21/10,17:19:36] Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0a: [2] Error: Installation failed for component Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0a. MSI returned error code 1603 [03/21/10,17:20:17] WapUI: [2] DepCheck indicates Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0a is not installed. Already i have tried this to try solve this issue, but the problem persists. 1.- unistall all frameworks and reinstall from scratch 2.- clean all temps file and reinstall from scratch 3.- unistall and clean all frameworks with dotnetfx cleanup tool and reinstall from scratch 4.- install .NET Framework 3.5 full package But all these possibles solutions have failed. • Is it possible to create a Mirror or Stripe volume for the boot partition in Windows 2008/R2?

  Hello, I have a server with two identical disks and I have installed Windows Server 2008 R2 on C, which is a 60GB volume on Disk 0. Using the disk manager, I have attempted to create both a Mirror and Stripe volume in Disk 1 but every time I get the same error "No extents found in the plex". This error occurs after Windows has converted both disks to Dynamic. The fact that the manager allows me to attempt to do this would point to the fact that this is possible. However I have been unable to find any solutions to this error. Any ideas on how to solve this? Thanks Georgios

• Images not accessible in localhost using wamp in windows 7 [closed]

  I Installed wamp in windows 7 pro, and copied a joomla live site. Everything seems working well except that it doesn't load the images on the page. Even when I try to access in directly: localhost/logo.png Im getting an 403 Forbidden: Forbidden You don't have permission to access /logo.png on this server. Solutions I have tried are: 1. Using icacls to grant priviledge 2. manually set the permission by right clicking the image and editing the security. php, html and other files are loading in the browser, but not images. Please help.

• How to force Windows XP to rename a file with a special character?

  I have a song that Windows can't play because there is a question mark in the name of the file. "Where Have All the Cowboys Gone?.ogg" // as an example So I try to rename it and Windows complains whether I try it in Explorer or from command prompt. Error I get when trying to copy, rename, or move is: The Filename, directory name, or volume label syntax is incorrect Is there a Windows way to force a rename in this case? Update I'll keep an eye on this question, but after 13 answers and many attempts (aside form 3rd party solutions) it seems that Windows can't do this (or at least my windows can't, no short names). So I'm accepting the answer which was my original solution anyway of using Linux. It would be nice to see Windows handle this somehow, so don't stop just because I've accepted this answer, the question still stands!

• Touchpad not working after login in Ubuntu

  At some point my touchpad stopped working on Lenovo x220 under Ubuntu 11.10, after login. I have found two possible solutions for that online, but neither of them work. First, gconftool-2 --set --type boolean /desktop/gnome/peripherals/touchpad/touchpad_enabled true and a second one, xinput set-int-prop "SynPS/2 Synaptics TouchPad" "Synaptics Off" 8 0 After looking more carefully into xinput I have realized that xinput list-props "SynPS/2 Synaptics TouchPad" outputs: Device Enabled (132): 0 This field seems to be stuck to zero, because trying to set it back to 1 by: xinput set-int-prop "SynPS/2 Synaptics TouchPad" "Device Enabled" 8 1 doesn't seem to have any effect, e.g. I still have: Device Enabled (132): 0 Any ideas? • Internet really slow or stops working on my computer but fine on my laptop and ipad

  I know you are going to say that this has been answered already, but it hasnt. None of those solutions worked for me. So this is the problem, and it only occurs on my computer, my laptop,ipad and iphone are just fine. When I`m browsing the net, it laods webpages slow(my speed is 30mb down and 3mb up) and when I start downloading with a another application(steam, utorrent), my browser completely stops working, but the application thats downloading(steam, utorrent) continues to download with a fast spead(2-3mb/s) and I do not know why. I have this issue on all browsers. I have tried chrome, internet explorer and firefox. I have restored my windows but still the same issue and I also have kubuntu installed and it also has the same issue. I do not know why. Any help? Thank you

• Simple command line calculator

  Had one years ago (on Win 3.1 or '95, I'm not sure). Anyways, it was a really simple program. Stood somewhere in PATH and enabled you to do something of a kind calc 5 + 28.3*sqrt(12) and it spit out the result. Anyone know of any such these days? Doesn't need to do anything fancy ... maybe it would just be nice if it had support for exponentials, but that's it. Anyone? p.s. Not interested in full blown solutions like Python or MATLAB.

• Install Mozilla Thunderbird on NAS [on hold]

  I have a small office with 3 computers running Linux Ubuntu. All the data are stored in a NAS drive (WD MyBook Live). I would like to - somehow - be able to access the email archives as well from each of these computers. For now, I don't really care if it would be possible for each user to access the email archives simultaneously (although that would be ideal). I have read about Portable Thunderbird over Wine as well as installing IMAP on the NAS drive. However, not only I haven't found a complete guide on how to do that but I am also not sure whether either of these solutions would work for me anyway.

Thus, I did not find any virtualization specific packages. I proceeded to generate the iso following the steps in the blog, and burned it to a DVD.

• Triggering GDM login on a remote machine

  I have to briefly describe the situation. We are planning to make a computer classroom with workstations running Ubuntu 10.04. Since making accounts for each student has not been considered reasonable, we decided to make accounts for each student group. We don't want students to share their passwords between groups so the solution would be not to give them passwords at all, but let the teacher log them in instead. Obviously he shouldn't go from one machine to another typing in credentials by hand, so we need some script that will connect to a remote machine by ssh and make GDM (or probably any other login manager if GDM cannot serve this purpose) log in specified user. I couldn't find any solutions, as well as I haven't noticed anybody in similar situation asking for help, so my question will be: can the scheme described be realized and if yes, then how? • How do I make control-click in Opera open new tabs?

  Update: As of version 11.50, control-click opens the new tab in background, as desired. Yay! In Opera, as opposed to all other modern browsers I know, control-click does not open a new tab. Moreover, I couldn't find any good way to configure this behavior. The best available option seems to be this. However, it's so hacky that it won't work on HTTPS sites unless you enable user javascript there, which doesn't seem like a good idea. There also seem to be other proposed solutions, but none of them seem to work. I'd like this because my laptop has no middle mouse-button, and I'm a creature of habit. Do people have any ideas (for the latest version, 10.50)? I'd like ctrl-click to open a background tab, but I can do with foreground. Thank you!

  ...I've suffered this problem many times and so do my colleagues Sometimes after you stroked some keyboard and mouse combinations this behavior showed up : you have to click a xterm's title bar to focus on that term so that you can input, instead of any places in that window. Whatever you do, minimize, resize don't help. This only thing you can do is logout that session but all the working history will be gone(of course I can save that but it's awkward) I'm eagerly wondering is there any solutions to this? • Tar an gzip together, but the other way round?

  Gzipping a tar file as whole is drop dead easy and even implemented as option inside tar. So far, so good. However, from an archiver's point of view, it would be better to tar the gzipped single files. (The rationale behind it is, that data loss is minified, if there is a single corrupt gzipped file, than if your whole tarball is corrupted due to gzip or copy errors.) Has anyone experience with this? Are there drawbacks? Are there more solid/tested solutions for this than find folder -exec gzip '{}' \; tar cf folder.tar folder

• Backup software for Ubuntu - which one?

  Hi everybody, I have spent some time testing out different backup solutions for my small home office during the last weeks, but still haven't found anything that have been working out too well yet. We can definitely work with a non-GUI script if that's what it takes, if only the requirements are fulfilled: Upload to Amazon S3 Europe. We get unbelievable slow uploading speed to US, so uploading 400+ GB of data will not be happening anytime this year... Incremental backups - only changed files shall be uploaded or we will have a big bill from Amazon in the end of each month.. Files should not be uploaded in one big per-folder archive. This is not efficient at all, since if we change one file in a subfolder, a huge two-digit GB sized file would have to be uploaded during next backup. Not good for economy again, or traffic overhead on our internet connection. What options are available to us? Thanks!

• Mount remote drive by port forwarding

  I have a windows 7 computer at home and a remote windows XP machine with an external USB drive attached to it. I would like to be able to copy files to and from home/the remote USB drive. The problem is that the only way of contacting the work computer is by first sshing into a different remote linux machine as there is a firewall that prevents direct internet connection. I can see two possible solutions but I don't know how to do them. Set up winscp using ssh port forwarding via the linux box so that I can copy to and from the two windows machines. I assume that I would need to run an ssh server on the XP machine as well to do this? Mounting the remote USB drive on the remote windows machine from the home XP machine via ssh port forwarding again via the linux box. Does anyone know how to do either solution?

• How to convert OpenVZ OS templte to bootable to image file?

  My question is how to convert a pre-created OpenVZ OS template which are in tar.gz format (such as these) to an image file in order to be able boot it with other virtualization solutions such as QEMU or VirtualBox. In order to achieve this, I made an empty image file, I partitioned it, and made two partition, a primary partition and a extended partition for swap. I made the first partition ext3 (0x83) and the other one swap (0x82). Then I made the first one bootable, and copied the content of tar.gz to the first partition. But when I try to boot, it hangs at the first stage of booting.
