• Did we always have to register to download the Java 5 JDK, or is this new Oracle fun?

  I could swear that just a couple of months ago I downloaded a copy of the Java 1.5 SE JDK and I did not have to give them information on my first born. Today, I had to go through the register-and-we-will-send-you-a-link-someday dance. I have not received the link yet, so I thought I would ask about it here. What is special about the Java 5 JDK? I can get 6 just by clicking, is this a stick to get us to migrate to Java 6? Am I just not remembering doing this before? What marketing genius thought this would be a value add for Java? "If we make them sweat for the JDK they won't just delete it willy-nilly the next time?" Does everyone picture the people designing systems like this as mustache twirling Snidely Whiplash clones like I do? Did I just miss the link for the Secret Squirrel route to the download page? Finally, I am in the U.S. so I should not have to worry about export restrictions. Any thoughts?

• How to Store and Retrieve Images Using MsSQL (Server Management Studio)

  I am having difficulties when trying to insert files into an MsSQL database. I'll try to break this down as best as I can: What data type should I be using to store image files (jpeg/png/gif/etc)? Right now my table is using the image data type, but I am curious if varbinary would be a better option. How would I go about inserting the image into the database? Does Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio have any built in functions that allow insertions of files into tables? If so, how is that done? Also, how could this be done through the use of an HTML form with PHP handling the input data and placing it into the table? How would I fetch the image from the table and display it on the page? I understand how to SELECT the cell's contents, but how would I go about translating that into a picture. Would I have to have a header(Content type: image/jpeg)? I have no problem doing any of these things with MySQL, but the MsSQL environment is still new to me, and I am working on a project for my job that requires the use of stored procedures to grab various data. • Using a "take-home" coding component in interview process

  In recent interviews I have been asking candidates to code through some questions on the whiteboard. I don't feel I'm getting a clear enough picture of the candidates technical ability with this approach. Granted, the questions might not be good enough, maybe the interview needs to be longer, etc, but I'm wondering if a different approach would be better. What I'd like to try is to create a simple, working project in Visual Studio and have it checked into source control. The candidate can check that code out from home/wherever and then check back in work representing their response to the assignment that I'll provide. I'm thinking that if the window of time is short enough and the assignment clear enough then the solution will be safe enough from all-out Googling (i.e. they couldn't search for and find the entire solution online). I would then be able to review the candidates work. Has enough worked with something like this before, either to vet a candidate or as a candidate yourself? Any thoughts in general? P.S. my first StackOverflow question - hi guys and gals. EDIT: I've seen comments about asking someone to work for free - I wouldn't mind paying the person for their time.

• iPhone OpenGL ES Texture2D Masking

  What's the best choice when trying to mask a texture like ColorSplash or other apps like iSteam, etc? I started learning OPENGL ES like... 4 days ago (I'm a total rookie) and tried the following approach: 1) I created a colored texture2D, a grayscale version of the first texture and a third texture2D called mask 2) I also created a texture2D for the brush... which is grayscale and it's opaque (brush = black = 0,0,0,1 and surroundings = white = 1,1,1,1). My intention was to create an antialiased brush with smooth edges but i'm fine with a normal one right now 3) I searched for masking techniques on the internet and found this tutorial ZeusCMD - Design and Development Tutorials : OpenGL ES Programming Tutorials - Masking about masking. The tutorial tells me to use blending to achieve masking... first draw colored, then mask with glBlendFunc(GL_DST_COLOR, GL_ZERO) and then grayscale with glBlendFunc(GL_ONE, GL_ONE) ... and this gives me something close to what i want... but not exactly what i want. The result is masked but it's somehow overbright-ed 4) For drawing to the mask texture i used an extra frame buffer object (FBO) I'm not really happy with the resulting image (overbright-ed picture) nor with the speed achieved with this method. I think the normal way was to draw directly to the grayscale (overlay) texture2D affecting only it's alpha channel in the places where the brush hits. Is there a fast way to achieve this? I have searched a lot and never got an answer that's clear and understandable. Then, in the main draw loop I could only draw the colored texture and then blend the grayscale ontop with glBlendFunc(GL_SRC_ALPHA, GL_ONE_MINUS_SRC_ALPHA). I just want to learn to use OPENGL ES and it's driving me nuts because i can't get it to work properly. An advice, a link to a tutorial would be much appreciated.

• Efficient algorithm for Next button on a MySQL result set

  I have a website that lets people view rows in a table (each row is a picture). There are more than 100,000 rows. You can view different subsets of the rows, and you can view them with different sort orders. While you are viewing one of the rows, you can click the "Next" or "Previous" buttons to go the next/previous row in the list. How would you implement the "Next" and "Previous" features of the website? More specifically, if you have an arbitrary query that returns a list of up to 100,000+ rows, and you know some information about the current row someone is viewing, how do you determine the NEXT row efficiently? Here is the pseudo-code of the solution I came up with when the website was young, and it worked well when there were only 1000 rows, but now that there are 100,000 rows I think it is eating up too much memory. int nextRowId(string query, int currentRowId) { array allRowIds = mysql_query(query); // Takes up a lot of memory! int currentIndex = (index of currentRowId in allRowIds); // Takes time! return allRowIds[currentIndex+1]; } While you are thinking about this problem, remember that the website can store more information about the current row than just its ID (for example, the position of the current row in the result set), and this information can be used as a hint to help determine the ID of the next row. Edit: Sorry for not mentioning this earlier, but this isn't just a static website: rows can often be added to the list, and rows can be re-ordered in the list. (Much rarer, rows can be removed from the list.) I think that I should worry about that kind of thing, but maybe you can convince me otherwise.

  Hey all Basically for my final project at university, I'm developing a vehicle license plate detection application. Now I consider myself an intermediate programmer, however my mathematics knowledge lacks anything above secondary school, therefore producing detection formulae is basically impossible. Due to this testing various graphic images proved productive, for example: to However this approach is only catered to that particular image, and if the techniques were applied to different images, I'm sure a different, most likely poorer conversion would occur. I've read about a formula called the bottom hat morphology transform, which according to the first does the following: "Basically, the trans- formation keeps all the dark details of the picture, and eliminates everything else (including bigger dark regions and light regions)." Sadly I can't find much information on this, however the image within the documentation near the end of the report shows it's effectiveness. I'm aware this is complicated and vast, I'd just appreciate a little advice, even in terms of what transformation techniques I should focus on developing, or algorithm regarding edge detection or pixel detection. • How to use Caret to tell which line it is in from JTextPane? (Java)

  Hi all. Problem: I have CaretListener and DocumentListener listening on a JTextPane. I need an algorithm that is able to tell which line is the caret at in a JTextPane, here's an illustrative example: Result: 3rd line Result: 2nd line Result: 4th line and if the algorithm can tell which line the caret is in the JTextPane, it should be fairly easy to substring whatever that is in between the parentheses as the picture (caret is at character m of metadata): -- This is how I divide the entire text that I retrieved from the JTextPane into sentences: String[] lines = textPane.getText().split("\r?\n|\r", -1); The sentences in the textPane is separated with \n. Problem is, how can I manipulate the caret to let me know at which position and which line it is in? I know the dot of the caret says at which position it is, but I can't tell which line it is at. Assuming if I know which line the caret is, then I can just do lines[<line number>] and manipulate the string from there. In Short: How do I use CaretListener and/or DocumentListener to know which line the caret is currently at, and retrieve the line for further string manipulation? Please help. Thanks. • Moving UIScrollView in App

  Currently, I am attempting to create the same effect as Yahoo! Weather's App where the vital day information is at the bottom of the page on the top of a UIScrollView, that's contained by a UIView. I am having a hard time thinking about how this is going to happen or how I should implement this. If the user taps on the top of the UIScrollView which is located near the bottom of the laoded UIView, and starts to scroll up (/), the UIScrollView's frame should be moved to the TOP of the current UIView's frame. So the UIScrollView's y-value should change to UIView's (self.view.frame.origin.y) if the user starts scrolling UP on the UIScrollView which is located on the UIView's y-pixel ~280. Here's what the UIViewController should look like in the beginning of loading the ViewController... Then once the user slides his finger from the bottom to the top of the screen... this should happen........ And when the user scrolls to the top of the UIScrollView with all the content within it... the view should go back to the start picture shown... How is this done? I was thinking several UIGestureRecognizer's and Instantiating the UIscrollview at the lower part of the UIView... _weatherView = [[UIScrollView alloc] initWithFrame:CGRectMake(self.view.frame.origin.x, self.view.frame.origin.y + 250, self.view.bounds.size.width, self.view.bounds.size.height - 44)]; _weatherView.contentSize = CGSizeMake(self.view.bounds.size.width, self.view.bounds.size.height * 4); _weatherView.backgroundColor = [UIColor clearColor]; [self.view addSubview:_weatherView]; The adding some UIGestureRecognizer delegate method.... • Reverse geocode street name and city as text

  Hello, I have been having some trouble finding a good way to output just the street name and city as text (Infinite Loop, Cupertino shown here) that can be displayed in my iPhone app. This needs to be able to dynamically change as you change streets and city. I don't have the slightest idea of how to do this, I hope someone can help. I have attached a very rough image of what I am trying to acheave. I have found this (http://code.google.com/apis/maps/documentation/javascript/services.html#Geocoding) for google maps about how to reverse geocode using javascript, but what I do not understand is how this would be done in a iPhone development setting. I work in web design and I see how it would be done in HTML but I am very new to iPhone development and don't have the slightest clue of how it would be done here. If someone could spell out how to do this I would be extremely grateful. I cannot seem to find what I am looking for by searching Google. Also some time has passed since the last real code-golf here, so I decided to create this one. Imagine a simplified numpad like you know it from your phone (I'll leave the 0 out for this code-golf as it kinda destroys all the fun) 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 Now the rules of the game were always: At the end every digit must have been visited exactly once You can start at any digit you want You can always move one digit up, down, left or right. You can't move diagonally! • C# algorithm for figuring out different possible combinations...

  I have 10 boxes, each box can hold one item from a group/type of items, each 'group' type only fits in one of the 10 box types. The pool can have n number of items. The groups have completely distinct items. Each item has a price, i want an algorithm that will generate all the different possibilities, so i can figure out different price points. so a smaller picture of the problem BOX A - can have item 1,2,3,4 in it BOX B - can have item 6,7,8,9,10,11,12 BOX C - can have item 13,15,16,20,21 The items are stored in a db, they have a column which denotes which box they can go in. All box types are stored in an array, and I can put the items in a generic list. Anyone see a straightforward way to do this. I have tried doing 10 nested foreach's to see if i could find a simpler way. The nested loops will take MANY hours to run. the nested for each's basically pull all combinations, then calculate a rank for each combination, and store the top 10 ranked combination of items for output

• Still don't understand file upload-folder permissions

  I have checked out articles and tutorials. I don't know what to do about the security of my picture upload-folder. It is pictures for classifieds which should be uploaded to the folder. This is what I want: Anybody may upload images to the folder. The images will be moved to another folder, by another php-code later on (automatic). Only I may manually remove them, as well as another php file on the server which automatically empties the folder after x-days. What should I do here? The images are uploaded via a php-upload script. This script checks to see if the extension of the file is actually a valid image-file. When I try this: chmod 755 images the images wont be uploaded. But like this it works: chmod 777 images But 777 is a security risk right? Please give me detailed information... The Q is, what to do to solve this problem, not info about what permissions there are etc etc... Thanks If you need more info let me know...

  I have created a class that extends JLabel to use as my object moving around a JPanel for a game. import javax.swing.*; public class Head extends JLabel { int xpos; int ypos; int xvel; int yvel; ImageIcon chickie = new ImageIcon("C:\\Users\\jjpotter.MSDOM1\\Pictures\\clavalle.jpg"); JLabel myLabel = new JLabel(chickie); public Head(int xpos, int ypos, int xvel, int yvel){ this.xpos = xpos; this.ypos = ypos; this.xvel = xvel; this.yvel = yvel; } public void draw(){ myLabel.setLocation(xpos, ypos); } public double getXpos() { return xpos; } public double getYpos() { return ypos; } public int getXvel() { return xvel; } public int getYvel() { return yvel; } public void setPos(int x, int y){ xpos = x; ypos = y; } } I am then trying to add it onto my JPanel. From here I will randomly have it increment its x and y coordinates to float it around the screen. I can not get it to paint itself onto the JPanel. I know there is a key concept I am missing here that involves painting components on different panels. Also, is this a good way to go about having the picture float around the screen randomly for a game?

• Newbie: Render RGB to GTK widget -- howto?

  Hi All, Big picture: I want to render an RGB image via GTK on a linux box. I'm a frustrated GTK newbie, so please forgive me. I assume that I should create a Drawable_area in which to render the image -- correct? Do I then have to create a graphics context attached to that area? How? my simple app (which doesn't even address the rgb issue yet is this: int main(int argc, char** argv) { GdkGC * gc = NULL; GtkWidget * window = NULL; GtkDrawingArea * dpage = NULL; GtkWidget * page = NULL; gtk_init( &argc, & argv ); window = gtk_window_new( GTK_WINDOW_TOPLEVEL ); page = gtk_drawing_area_new( ); dpage = GTK_DRAWING_AREA( page ); gtk_widget_set_size_request( page, PAGE_WIDTH, PAGE_HEIGHT ); gc = gdk_gc_new( GTK_DRAWABLE( dpage ) ); gtk_widget_show( window ); gtk_main(); return (EXIT_SUCCESS); } my dpage is apparently not a 'drawable' (though it is a drawing area). I am confused as to a) how do I get/create the graphics context which is required in subsequent function calls? b) am I close to a solution, or am I so completely *#&@& wrong that there is no hope c) a baby steps tutorial. • Architecting ASP.net MVC App to use repositories and services

  Hello, I recently started reading about ASP.net MVC and after getting excited about the concept, i started to migrate all my webform project to MVC but i am having a hard time keeping my controller skinny even after following all the good advices out there (or maybe i just don't get it ... ). The website i deal with has Articles, Videos, Quotes ... and each of these entities have categories, comments, images that can be associated with it. I am using Linq to sql for database operations and for each of these Entities, i have a Repository, and for each repository, i create a service to be used in the controller. so i have - ArticleRepository ArticleCategoryRepository ArticleCommentRepository and the corresponding service ArticleService ArticleCategoryService ... you see the picture. The problem i have is that i have one controller for article,category and comment because i thought that having ArticleController handle all of that might make sense, but now i have to pass all of the services needed to the Controller constructor. So i would like to know what it is that i am doing wrong. Are my services not designed properly? should i create Bigger service to encapsulate smaller services and use them in my controller? or should i have an articleCategory Controller and an articleComment Controller? A page viewed by the user is made of all of that, thee article to be viewed,the comments associated with it, a listing of the categories to witch it applies ... how can i efficiently break down the controller to keep it "skinny" and solve my headache? • can someone help me with why my OnClickListener won't work? Android

• Problem with poor font rendering with CSS3 transitions, jQuery, & Google Fonts

  In Firefox, there is no problem. Here's an image: http://cl.ly/3R0L1q3P1r11040e3T1i In Safari, the text is rendering poorly: http://cl.ly/0a1101341r2E1D2d1W46 In IE7 & IE8, it's much worse, but I don't have a picture. Sorry :( I'm using Isotope jQuery plugin, and the CSS3 transitions seem to cause the poor font-rendering. I'm also using Google Font API.
