  Hi, The following is a fragment of a bash script that I'm running under cygwin on Windows: deployDir=/cygdrive/c/Temp/deploy timestamp=`date +%Y-%m-%d_%H:%M:%S` deployDir=${deployDir}/$timestamp if [ ! -d "$deployDir" ]; then echo "making dir $deployDir" mkdir -p $deploydir fi This produces output such as: making dir /cygdrive/c/Temp/deploy/2010-04-30_11:47:58 mkdir: missing operand Try `mkdir --help' for more information. However, if I type /cygdrive/c/Temp/deploy/2010-04-30_11:47:58 on the command-line it succeeds, why does the same command not work in the script? Thanks, Don

• How come checkbox state is not always passed along to PHP script?

  I have an HTML form: <form action='process.php' method='post'> <input type='checkbox' name='check_box_1' /> Check me!<br> </form> Here is a section from the PHP script process.php: echo (isset($_POST['check_box_1']))?'Set':'Not set'; The output of the script when the checkbox is set is Set But when the checkbox is not set, the output is: Not set Why is this? This seems like a very poor design because my PHP script checks a number of $_POST variables to make sure they were passed along to the script. When the $_POST['check_box_1'] value is not set, then how do I know whether the script failed to pass along the value or the checkbox was just not set?

• PHP: how to stop ignore_user_abort, is it a good solution for long run program

  let say i have send email program which need to run arround 7 hours. but i cant open the browser for 7 hours beside cronjob, ignore_user_abort() will it be a solution? will the script stop when all email has sent and the program has finish the loop? or it will keep eating the server memory? some people said u may need to add some output at the end of the program to avoid the program run forever? and some people also said echo a litte bit string will not stop the script, but has to use ob_flush, any example for this?

I'm assuming if it's possibly with javascript, jquery can do it easier ;)

But currently passing a string seems to already have a problem. Any know what I did wrong here? Still not working the code above. Anyone want to help me out here?

• SQLAlchemy automatically converts str to unicode on commit

  Hello, When inserting an object into a database with SQLAlchemy, all it's properties that correspond to String() columns are automatically transformed from <type 'str'> to <type 'unicode'>. Is there a way to prevent this behavior?   I have a property whose value contains a $. I'd like to use this property as a regexp in a propertyregexp. Ant appears to resolve the property as a paramater to the propertyregexp, but then the dollar gets interpreted as a regexp symbol.   I currently have a makefile to process some data. The makefile gets the inputs to the data processing by sourcing a CONFIG file, which defines the input data in a variable. Currently, I symlink the input files to a local directory, i.e. the makefile contains: tmp/%.txt: tmp ln -fs $(shell echo $(INPUTS) | tr ' ' '\n' | grep $(patsubst tmp/%,%,$@)) $@ This is not terribly elegant, but appears to work. Is there a better way? Basically, given INPUTS = /foo/bar.txt /zot/snarf.txt I would like to be able to have e.g. %.out: %.txt some command As well as targets to merge results depending on all $(INPUT) files. Also, apart from the kludgosity, the makefile doesn't work correctly with -j, something that is crucial for the analysis to complete in reasonable time. I guess that's a bug in GNU make, but any hints welcome.

• Should one use PHP to print all of a page's HTML?

  Hi So I've always developed PHP pages like this: <?php goes at the top, ?> goes at the bottom, and all the HTML gets either print()ed or echo()ed out. Is that slower than having non-dynamic html outputted outside of <?php ?> tags? I can't seem to find any info about this. Thanks! --Mala UPDATE: the consesus seems to be on doing it my old way being hard to read. This is not the case if you break your strings up line by line as in: print("\n". "first line goes here\n". "second line goes here\n". "third line"); etc. It actually makes it a lot easier to read than having html outside of php structures, as this way everything is properly indented. That being said, it involves a lot of string concatenation.

  I am trying to read in a series of tab delimited text files into existing MySQL tables. I echo out the code, paste it into a MySQL editor and it runs fine, it just won't execute from the PHP script. What am I doing wrong?? Si

  According to the PHP manual, a class like this: abstract class Example {} cannot be instantiated. If I need a class without instance, e.g. for a registry pattern: class Registry {} // and later: echo Registry::$someValue; would it be considered good style to simply declare the class as abstract? If not, what are the advantages of hiding the constructor as protected method compared to an abstract class? Rationale for asking: As far as I see it, it could a bit of feature abuse, since the manual refers to abstract classes more as like blueprints for later classes with instantiation possibility.

Here is my solution in Bash but I would be very interested for a more portable (non-GNU) version for use on Unix proper. dir='some/directory' file=`/bin/ls -1 "$dir" | sort --random-sort | head -1` path=`readlink --canonicalize "$dir/$file"` # Converts to full path echo "The randomly-selected file is: $path" Anybody have any other ideas? Edit: lhunath makes a good point about parsing ls. I guess it comes down to whether you want to be portable or not. If you have the GNU findutils and coreutils then you can do: find "$dir" -maxdepth 1 -mindepth 1 -type f -print0 \ | sort --zero-terminated --random-sort \ | sed 's/\d000.*//g/' Whew, that was fun! Also it matches my question better since I said "random file". Honsetly though, these days it's hard to imagine a Unix system deployed out there having GNU installed but not Perl 5.

  I need to check if I Filesystem exists, and if it does exist there is 300 MB of space in it.
