• RDP problem with Vista and Windows 7 destination

  I use a server a home to host a bunch of concurrently running Hyper-V VM's with different OS's and software for testing. I have Vista on the laptop, all latest SP's and patches. The server is Server 2008 R2, fully patched. The guests are a mix of XP, Vista, Server 2008 and Windows 7. If I connect to the Win XP or Server 2008 guest using RDP, it is always good. Very quick, no speed issues. If I connect to the Vista or Win 7 guests, the response time is so slow it is unusable. Usually 6 or 8 seconds, and at times it is to long to measure! This happens from both the laptop running Vista, and the server running Server 2008 R2. Does anyone know what the issue is with RDP on Vista and Windows 7 destinations? I did read this: http://blog.tmcnet.com/blog/tom-keating/microsoft/remote-desktop-slow-problem-solved.asp and that is not the problem I have applied that change to all PC's.

• Makecert.exe hangs

  I was following the steps in Scott Hanselman's blog post describing how to create a certificate authority and code signing certificate for PowerShell scripts. Initially, I created the certificate authority and a personal certifcate and used it to sign a powershell script successfully. All went as described in the blog post. The problem starts (as most do) when I did something that was (probably) stupid, although it seemed reasonable at the time. I wanted to start over and repeat the process again with a clean slate, so from the mmc certificates snap-in console, I deleted the personal certificate and the certificate authority I created previously. After that any time I try to use makecert, (just as I did the first time around), makecert either hangs or faults (which prompts to end or debug). Did I hose something up by deleting via the certificates snap-in? It didn't complain or warn me that it could be potentially hazardous. Is this just coincidence and something else entirely could be hosed? I have Event Log entries from the times when makecert crashed, which all look very similar; here is one: Log Name: Application Source: Application Error Date: 8/5/2009 3:55:04 PM Event ID: 1000 Task Category: (100) Level: Error Description: Faulting application makecert.exe, version 6.0.6000.16384, time stamp 0x4545910b, faulting module ntdll.dll, version 6.0.6002.18005, time stamp 0x49e03821, exception code 0xc0000005, fault offset 0x00067409, process id 0xe58, application start time 0x01ca160efdf30625. Anyone have any ideas as to what exactly caused this and/or what I can do to fix it. I'm on 32-bit Vista Enterprise w/SP2.

• Cannot 301 redirect with IIS URL Rewrite Module

  I am trying to troubleshoot my issue with the URL Rewrite Module on IIS 7. I migrated a Wordpress blog over to BlogEngine.net. There were only about 5 entries that I wanted to use 301 redirects to the new blog, so I wanted to simply create 5 exact match redirect rules using the rewrite module. For some reason the exact match rule never seems to take effect, I always get a 404 error when the original url is navigated to. I verified that my exact match pattern matched the existing backlinks and it does. I then tried a simple test and got the same behavior, no redirection. I created a page, test.html, on my site, I then created a second page, test2.html. So my exact match pattern is: "http://www.mydomain.com/test.html" And the rule is supposed to do a 301 redirect to "http://www.mydomain.com/test2.html " The redirect never happens. I created the steps for the rule based on the instructions in this page: http://learn.iis.net/page.aspx/461/creating-rewrite-rules-for-the-url-rewrite-module/ I don't see that I left out a step. After I apply the rule I've even gone as far as doing an IISReset to make sure it would be in effect but still no luck. Any thoughts on what I might have left out? (Note: my rewrite rules dont include the " " around them but I had to add since serverfault thinks I am trying to spam the system with multiple urls.)

• VMWare Workstation Linux Host performance tuning

  I need to improve my linux hosted vmware workstation for using multiple virtual machines at the same time. I feel very stupid I lost a great blog post link which I found last month (and I'm not able to find it again..) so I try to ask here if anyone can help me: This is my host (laptop): 16GB DDR3 Ram HDD Hybrid 750GB 7200 (8GB SSD Cache) Mint 15 x64 Kernel 3.9.7 swappiness set to 10 The above are the important things about the host. So, My need is the ability to run 2 or 3 VMs at the same time. The lack of performance is about the disk, The last time from that blog post I lost, I setup /tmp to be mounted ad a memory partition and in my previous installation that was good, now I'm not able to find a good solution to tweak the things. I think with 16GB o RAM there will be no problems to run multiple VMs, but whe they start to swap or use the /tmp things going bad (guest cursor going too fast after a freeze, guest freeze and so on) Anyone can help me to fit a good host tweak and configuration to get better performance? • nginx projects in subfolders

  I'm getting frustrated with my nginx configuration and so I'm asking for help in writing my config file to serve multiple projects from sub-directories in the same root. This isn't virtual hosting as they are all using the same host value. Perhaps an example will clarify my attempt: request 192.168.1.1/ should serve index.php from /var/www/public/ request 192.168.1.1/wiki/ should serve index.php from /var/www/wiki/public/ request 192.168.1.1/blog/ should serve index.php from /var/www/blog/public/ These projects are using PHP and use fastcgi. My current configuration is very minimal. server { listen 80 default; server_name localhost; access_log /var/log/nginx/localhost.access.log; root /var/www; index index.php index.html; location ~ \.php$ { fastcgi_pass 127.0.0.1:9000; fastcgi_index index.php; fastcgi_param SCRIPT_FILENAME /var/www$fastcgi_script_name; include fastcgi_params; } } I've tried various things with alias and rewrite but was not able to get things set correctly for fastcgi. It seems there should be a more eloquent way than writing location blocks and duplicating root, index, SCRIPT_FILENAME, etc. Any pointers to get me headed in the right direction are appreciated.

• Wordpress advanced navigation [closed]

  Ok, so I've made a site template in pure html and I need to convert it into wordpress. Notice also how I have a span inside each li element. Is there a way to reproduce this in my wordpress theme without just manually copying this into it?

• How to avoid index.php in Zend Framework route using Nginx rewrite

  I am trying to get rid of index.php from the default Zend Framework route. I think it should be corrected at the server level and not on the application. (Correct me if I am wrong, but I think doing it on the server side is more efficient). • MySQL Not Turning On

  I have an amazon ec2 instance running on the Amazon Linux AMI and its a micro instance. I wanted to install Django onto my server so I entered these commands wget http://www.mlsite.net/blog/wp-content/uploads/2008/11/go wget http://www.mlsite.net/blog/wp-content/uploads/2008/11/django.conf chmod 744 go ./go So after I was done, I ran sudo service httpd restart and sudo service mysqld restart and This is what came up for mysqld: Stopping mysqld: [ OK ] MySQL Daemon failed to start. Starting mysqld: [FAILED] So I deleted the django files /usr/local/python2.6.8/site-packages/django_registration.egg and I tried finding the error and I found out that in my /etc/my.cnf for the socket, it said socket=/var/lock/subsys/mysql.sock so I went to /var/lock/subsys/ and there was no mysql.sock. I tried creating one using vim but it still didn't work. Then I checked the error log and it said Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/var/run/mysqld/mysqld.sock' (2) So I am pretty much lost right now. I know it has something to do with mysql.sock If you might know a reason why this was caused could you please let me know? I have a wordpress site on my server, so i kind of need MySQL to work. • Upgrade Centos 5 tot PHP 5.2 or 5.3 [recommended way?]

  We are using Zend Framework and in version 2, php 5.2 will be the minimum requirement. We love CentOS and we'd like to keep using it, but PHP 5.1 just won't do anymore when developing web applications with Zend framework. CentOS repository if any is available. We only need to upgrade PHP, the rest of the CentOS setup is fine the way it is. For us, it's important however to keep the YUM cycle intact using the normal repositories. So in short: is it even possible to upgrade only PHP by using an external repo or otherwise? While still upgrading all our other packages safely through normal yum usage? Thanks for your help!

• Multiple Rails apps on same subdomain?

  I recently decided to try out Rails. When working with PHP, I simply had all of my PHP projects in the same directory. For example, I may have http://ubuntu/app1, http://ubuntu/app2, etc. I created a subdomain for Rails (http://ruby.ubuntu), installed Rails and Passenger and everything is working. However, I may be wrong, but it looks like I can only have one Rails app per subdomain? I want to be able to store all of my Rails apps in /var/www/ruby. I tried changing DocumentRoot to /var/www/ruby, but I don't think it's as simple as that. When I browse to a Rails app's Welcome Aboard page and click on "About my application's environment," I get a 404 page, but when the DocumentRoot is set to the public directory, I get the expected result. I don't want to have to create a new subdomain every time I create a new project. Is there any way I can make it so I can store all of my apps in /var/www/ruby, and browsing to http://ruby.ubuntu will let me access all of my Rails apps there? That way if I want to create a new app, all I have to do is rails new app, no Apache .htaccess or VirtualHost configuration required.

• Nginx + WordPress + HHVM: Why isn't Batcache working? Would Varnish help even more?

  I've heard great things about HHVM, so I've setup a copy of WordPress blog (on another domain) with Nginx (with the Pagespeed module) and HHVM. Right now the benefits are obvious: on the same config, load times are between two and three times faster. I'm trying to speed up things a little bit, and I've also installed Memcached and Batcache. I've installed the memcached package, copied object-cache.php (Pastebin) onto the root folder of the WordPress blog, and after that I've installed the Batcache plugin and copied the advanced-cache.php (Pastebin) file onto the wp-content folder. Also, I've included the line define('WP_CACHE', true); in the wp-config.php file. It seems it doesn't work, though. If I quickly reload the page several times Batcache should show the cached page, but it doesn't. It's easy to check that by reloading (Cmd+R on Chrome on OS X) the page several times and then viewing the page's code. Under the <head> section I should see some batcache stats, but they aren't there. I wonder if someone could give me some hint on this. On a side note, I don't know if I could add some other component in order to help the performance be even better. I'm thing about Varnish, but I'm not sure if it's just useless and it's just another way to the same I'm currently doing. Any other component there? (I'll test CDN for images, minifying js, etc and some other tricks as well, but I'm talking from the server perspective).

• Platform to allow users to suggest and vote for ideas

  I head up a support team for a software product. I am in the process of setting up a blog (Wordpress.org), a forum (PHPBB or maybe Vanilla), a means to view bugs (probably expose Jira), but would also like to allow our customers to suggest enhancement requests. Currently we have this as a 'contact form' via the blog, which feeds into a dedicated inbox, which the product manager reviews and may include some of these ideas into the product. However, I would like to give the clients more power/visibility over this. Have a look at ideas.arcgis.com. There are plenty of other similar sites as well. Users can suggest new ideas Other users can vote these ideas up or down (similar to Stack Exchange sites) Ideas that are voted highly will be given a higher priority over lower ones. We can report back on the # of ideas we implement, and potentially reject ideas with reasoning. Has anyone seen any platforms (ideally free) which would replicate something similar to this? I was half thinking of embedding Vanilla within a wordpress page, but need to look into it more.

• SQL - an error occurred during the pre-login handshake

  Until yesterday evening, I was able to connect to my server from my local machine. Now, I get the following error: A connection was successfully established with the server, but then an error occurred during the pre-login handshake. (provider: SSL Provider, error: 0 - The wait operation timed out.) (.Net SqlClient Data Provider) Note, I can log on to the actual server with no problem. Yesterday, I installed IIS on my machine and set up a site using my IP address - don't know if this has anything to do.   Issue: nginx does not seem to recognize my rails application Symptoms: When the server starts up, it shows the "Welcome to nginx!" message instead of my Rails application. • How do I restore tab-completion on shell variables on the bash command-line?

  I've long set my most-recently visited directories to shell variables d1, d2, etc. On an ancient Fedora machine I could type a command like $ cp $d1/ and the shell would replace $d1 with text like /home/acctname/projects/blog/ and would then show me the contents of .../blog, like any tab-completion. Now, both ubuntu wheezy/sid and fedora 16 just -escape the '$', and naturally there are no completions to show. You can see this behavior in action in an OSX Terminal window. On 10.8, do something like ls $HOME/ to see what I mean. Is there a bash shell variable or option that can restore the old behavior? man bash suggests this is a bug: complete (TAB) Attempt to perform completion on the text before point. Bash attempts completion treating the text as a variable (if the text begins with $), username (if the text begins with ~), hostname (if the text begins with @), or command (including aliases and functions) in turn. If none of these produces a match, filename completion is attempted. I get the above described completion when a token starts with '~' or a letter. It's just '$'-completion that's broken.

• As an admin, what tools do you use to log what you do to your boxes?

  I am more of a linux applications developer than an admin. Over time, I've built servers and maintained them, sometimes to offer services, mostly just to develop the applications I work on. Way back when I would create a file in my account to keep notes on what I did on each machine, so that I could replicate that when I migrated to other machines. Nowadays, I install something a private trac installation, install it's blog plugin, and then use that to make notes of everything I install, and most commands that I run, as well as the output. This provides me a combination wiki and blog that I find very useful as a "captain's log". I do this mostly so that when I migrate to a new clean machine, I have a much easier time in bringing it up. And yet, I am always amazed when I see others just install this, delete that, run this, setup this config, ... without seeming to use any way to actually note what they are doing. What do YOU do, and what tools are available? I am especially interested in the transition between maintaining a few machines for a few people and maintaining several to dozens of machines providing a real service. What are the best practices, and where can I find good resources? Thanks!

• Setting up Virtual Host in Fedora Core 15 using apache

  I'm trying to setup a couple of Virtual Host files on my Localhost PC running Fedora Core 15. Now I get this working, but now onloy one Virtual Host site works, and if I type in 127.0.0.1/test/testApp.php which is not related to the Virtual Host site , I get redirected to the Virtual Host site. Here's what I did. I created a new folder called virtualhosts in /etc/httpd/ where all my host files are stored in the following format site.conf In /etc/conf/httpd.conf I enabled NameVirtualHost *:80 and included the host files at the bottom of the config page like this Include virtualhosts/*.conf In /etc/hosts I added the line 127.0.0.1 website No when I run sudo httpd -t I get Syntax OK I restart apache and then the Virtualhost works, but as soon as I add other hosts and only use 127.0.0.1 as above it still links to the original host. Am I doing anything wrong here or left out something? • Performance required to improve Windows Experience Index?

  Is there a guide on the metrics required to obtain a certain Windows Experience Index? A Microsoft guy said in January 2009: On the matter of transparency, it is indeed our plan to disclose in great detail how the scores are calculated, what the tests attempt to measure, why, and how they map to realistic scenarios and usage patterns. Has that amount of transparency happened? Is there a technet article somewhere? If my score was limited by my Memory subscore of 5.9. A nieve person would suggest: Buy a faster RAM Which is wrong of course. From the Windows help: If your computer has a 64-bit central processing unit (CPU) and 4 gigabytes (GB) or less random access memory (RAM), then the Memory (RAM) subscore for your computer will have a maximum of 5.9. You can buy the fastest, overclocked, liquid-cooled, DDR5 RAM on the planet; you'll still have a maximum Memory subscore of 5.9. So in general the knee-jerk advice "buy better stuff" is not helpful. What i am looking for is attributes required to achieve a certain score, or move beyond a current limitation. • Blogger issue with custom background images on Chrome and Safari

  This is weird, the site in question is blog.andrebatista.info and it is a hosted at blogger.com. I'm trying to make the blogger template look the same as the one in my main website, www.andrebatista.info. For some reason if I go directly to the blog address Chrome and Safari fail to display all of my background images... all of them. However if I first go to www.andrebatista.info first and then go to the blog it renders just fine ?¿ The way I'm customizing it is by adding a link to my main site's stylesheet at the very end of the head tag on the blogger template. • How can I Display an extract from MySQL database entry?

  I'm after creating a webpage that includes a blog section and it currently displays the whole post on the homepage. I'd like to set it so that it only displays a certain part of the entry i.e 50 words. I'd then like to be able to set it so that I have a read more button below the post that links to the post id. I currently use post.php?=# (# = whatever the post id is). • How to Upgrade Your Netbook to Windows 7 Home Premium

  Would you like more features and flash in Windows on your netbook?  Here’s how you can easily upgrade your netbook to Windows 7 Home Premium the easy way. Most new netbooks today ship with Windows 7 Starter, which is the cheapest edition of Windows 7.  It is fine for many computing tasks, and will run all your favorite programs great, but it lacks many customization, multimedia, and business features found in higher editions.  Here we’ll show you how you can quickly upgrade your netbook to more full-featured edition of Windows 7 using Windows Anytime Upgrade.  Also, if you want to upgrade your laptop or desktop to another edition of Windows 7, say Professional, you can follow these same steps to upgrade it, too. Please note: This is only for computers already running Windows 7.  If your netbook is running XP or Vista, you will have to run a traditional upgrade to install Windows 7. Upgrade Advisor First, let’s make sure your netbook can support the extra features, such as Aero Glass, in Windows 7 Home Premium.  Most modern netbooks that ship with Windows 7 Starter can run the advanced features in Windows 7 Home Premium, but let’s check just in case.  Download the Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor (link below), and install as normal. Once it’s installed, run it and click Start Check.   Make sure you’re connected to the internet before you run the check, or otherwise you may see this error message.  If you see it, click Ok and then connect to the internet and start the check again. It will now scan all of your programs and hardware to make sure they’re compatible with Windows 7.  Since you’re already running Windows 7 Starter, it will also tell you if your computer will support the features in other editions of Windows 7. After a few moments, the Upgrade Advisor will show you want it found.  Here we see that our netbook, a Samsung N150, can be upgraded to Windows 7 Home Premium, Professional, or Ultimate. We also see that we had one issue, but this was because a driver we had installed was not recognized.  Click “See all system requirements” to see what your netbook can do with the new edition. This shows you which of the requirements, including support for Windows Aero, your netbook meets.  Here our netbook supports Aero, so we’re ready to go upgrade. For more, check out our article on how to make sure your computer can run Windows 7 with Upgrade Advisor. Upgrade with Anytime Upgrade Now, we’re ready to upgrade our netbook to Windows 7 Home Premium.  Enter “Anytime Upgrade” in the Start menu search,and select Windows Anytime Upgrade. Windows Anytime Upgrade lets you upgrade using product key you already have or one you purchase during the upgrade process.  And, it installs without any downloads or Windows disks, so it works great even for netbooks without DVD drives. Anytime Upgrades are cheaper than a standard upgrade, and for a limited time, select retailers in the US are offering Anytime Upgrades to Windows 7 Home Premium for only $49.99 if purchased with a new netbook.  If you already have a netbook running Windows 7 Starter, you can either purchase an Anytime Upgrade package at a retail store or purchase a key online during the upgrade process for $79.95.  Or, if you have a standard Windows 7 product key (full or upgrade), you can use it in Anytime upgrade.  This is especially nice if you can purchase Windows 7 cheaper through your school, university, or office. Purchase an upgrade online To purchase an upgrade online, click “Go online to choose the edition of Windows 7 that’s best for you”.   Here you can see a comparison of the features of each edition of Windows 7.  Note that you can upgrade to either Home Premium, Professional, or Ultimate.  We chose home Premium because it has most of the features that home users want, including Media Center and Aero Glass effects.  Also note that the price of each upgrade is cheaper than the respective upgrade from Windows XP or Vista.  Click buy under the edition you want.   Enter your billing information, then your payment information.  Once you confirm your purchase, you will directly be taken to the Upgrade screen.  Make sure to save your receipt, as you will need the product key if you ever need to reinstall Windows on your computer. Upgrade with an existing product key If you purchased an Anytime Upgrade kit from a retailer, or already have a Full or Upgrade key for another edition of Windows 7, choose “Enter an upgrade key”. Enter your product key, and click Next.  If you purchased an Anytime Upgrade kit, the product key will be located on the inside of the case on a yellow sticker. The key will be verified as a valid key, and Anytime Upgrade will automatically choose the correct edition of Windows 7 based on your product key.  Click Next when this is finished. Continuing the Upgrade process Whether you entered a key or purchased a key online, the process is the same from here on.  Click “I accept” to accept the license agreement. Now, you’re ready to install your upgrade.  Make sure to save all open files and close any programs, and then click Upgrade. The upgrade only takes about 10 minutes in our experience but your mileage may vary.  Any available Microsoft updates, including ones for Office, Security Essentials, and other products, will be installed before the upgrade takes place. After a couple minutes, your computer will automatically reboot and finish the installation.  It will then reboot once more, and your computer will be ready to use!  Welcome to your new edition of Windows 7! Here’s a before and after shot of our desktop.  When you do an Anytime Upgrade, all of your programs, files, and settings will be just as they were before you upgraded.  The only change we noticed was that our pinned taskbar icons were slightly rearranged to the default order of Internet Explorer, Explorer, and Media Player.  Here’s a shot of our desktop before the upgrade.  Notice that all of our pinned programs and desktop icons are still there, as well as our taskbar customization (we are using small icons on the taskbar instead of the default large icons). Before, with the Windows 7 Starter background and the Aero Basic theme: And after, with Aero Glass and the more colorful default Windows 7 background.   All of the features of Windows 7 Home Premium are now ready to use.  The Aero theme was activate by default, but you can now customize your netbook theme, background, and more with the Personalization pane.  To open it, right-click on your desktop and select Personalize. You can also now use Windows Media Center, and can play-back DVD movies using an external drive. One of our favorite tools, the Snipping Tool, is also now available for easy screenshots and clips. Activating you new edition of Windows 7 You will still need to activate your new edition of Windows 7.  To do this right away, open the start menu, right-click on Computer, and select Properties.   Scroll to the bottom, and click “Activate Windows Now”. Make sure you’re connected to the internet, and then select “Activate Windows online now”. Activation may take a few minutes, depending on your internet connection speed. When it is done, the Activation wizard will let you know that Windows is activated and genuine.  Your upgrade is all finished!
