  • Mysql search design

    I'm designing a mysql database, and i'd like some input on an efficient way to store blog/article data for searching. Right now, I've made a separate column that stores the content to be searched - no duplicate words, no words shorter than four letters, and no words that are too common. So, essentially, it's a list of keywords from the original article. Also searched would be a list of tags, and the title field. I'm not quite sure how mysql indexes fulltext columns, so would storing the data like that be ineffective, or redundant somehow? A lot of the articles are on the same topic, so would the score be hurt by so many of the rows having similar keywords? Also, for this project, solutions like sphinx, lucene or google custom seach can't be used -- only php & mysql. Thanks!

So now I want those characters to be replaced with quotes, but I don't know how to enter this character in :%s/???/'/g The characters look like this: ~U ~R.   • Limiting a search to records from last_request_at...

    I am trying to figure out how to display a count for records that have been created in a table since the last_request_at of a user. In my view I am counting the notes of a question with the following code: <% unless @questions.empty? %> <% @questions.each do |question| %> <%= h(question.notes.count) %> end end This is happening in the /views/users/show.html.erb file. Instead of counting all the notes for the question, I would only like to count the notes that have been created since the users last_request_at datetime. I don't neccessarily want to scope notes to display this 'new notes' count application wide, just simply in this one instance. To accomplish I am assuming I need to create a variable in the User#show action and call it in the view but not really sure how to do that. Other information you may need: class Note < ActiveRecord::Base belongs_to :user belongs_to :question end class Question < ActiveRecord::Base has_many :notes, :dependent => :destroy belongs_to :user end

However, as an O(n^2) operation this just doesn't scale to the larger sets of values and it seems that a significant amount of the processing time is spent simply iterating through the arrays.     I have a problem with querying MongoDB. In my code I have a method Get which has as a parametar a Dictionary. It should go through the database and query it, comparing string and then object. So, i always get a problem with this object part, QueryDocument won't take in an object type because it isn't an BsonValue. I have tried to cast it but it won't work. Do you have any suggestions ?     So, I am adapting some code I found online to suit my needs. However, my set_pixel function has two more parameters. Since there are lots of calls to this function even doing a quick paste over would be very tedious. So, I thought this would be a good time for me to learn some simple regular expressions. So, I have calls of this type: set_pixel(arg1, arg2); which I want to change to something like: set_pixel(arg1, arg2, arg3, arg4); Note: arg1 and and 2 should be preserved, whereas arg3 and arg4 are most of the time the same. I'm trying to figure out a quick way that doesn't require creating a loop. Using the in_array function did not work, and I also read that it is quite slow. In the php manual someone recommended using flip_array() and then isset(), but I can't get it to work for a 2-d array. doing something like if($array['accessory']['id'] == 211) would also work for me, but I need to match all keys containing accessory -- not sure how to do that Anyways, I'm spinning in circles, and could use some help. This seems like it should be easy. Thanks.
