• Unable to disable generation of sources JAR with maven-release-plugin

  I am trying to release a web project using Maven 2.2.1 and the maven-release-plugin 2.0-beta-9, but it always fails when doing release:perform on generating the sources jar for the EAR project, which makes sense since the EAR project doesn't have any source. To try to disable the building of a sources JAR for the EAR project, I added the following to the POM for my EAR project (the version of the release plugin is set in a parent POM): <build> <plugins> ... <plugin> <groupId>org.apache.maven.plugins</groupId> <artifactId>maven-release-plugin</artifactId> <configuration> <useReleaseProfile>false</useReleaseProfile> </configuration> </plugin> </plugins> </build> Upon running the release again after checking in this change, I got the same error while generating the sources JAR for the EAR project, even though this should have been disabled by the previous POM snippet. What am I doing wrong? Why is the sources JAR still being built? • Representing xml through a single class

  I am trying to abstract away the difficulties of configuring an application that we use. This application takes a xml configuration file and it can be a bit bothersome to manually edit this file, especially when we are trying to setup some automatic testing scenarios. I am finding that reading xml is nice, pretty easy, you get a network of element nodes that you can just go through and build your structures quite nicely. However I am slowly finding that the reverse is not quite so nice. I want to be able to build a xml configuration file through a single easy to use interface and because xml is composed of a system of nodes I am having a lot of struggle trying to maintain the 'easy' part. Does anyone know of any examples or samples that easily and intuitively build xml files without declaring a bunch of element type classes and expect the user to build the network themselves? For example if my desired xml output is like so <cook version="1.1"> <recipe name="chocolate chip cookie"> <ingredients> <ingredient name="flour" amount="2" units="cups"/> <ingredient name="eggs" amount="2" units="" /> <ingredient name="cooking chocolate" amount="5" units="cups" /> </ingredients> <directions> <direction name="step 1">Preheat oven</direction> <direction name="step 2">Mix flour, egg, and chocolate</direction> <direction name="step 2">bake</direction> </directions> </recipe> <recipe name="hot dog"> ... How would I go about designing a class to build that network of elements and make one easy to use interface for creating recipes? Right now I have a recipe object, an ingredient object, and a direction object. The user must make each one, set the attributes in the class and attach them to the root object which assembles the xml elements and outputs the formatted xml. Its not very pretty and I just know there has to be a better way. I am using python so bonus points for pythonic solutions

• Linker Issues with boost::thread under linux using Eclipse and CMake

  I'm in the process of attempting to port some code across from PC to Ubuntu, and am having some issues due to limited experience developing under linux. We use CMake to generate all our build stuff. Under windows I'm making VS2010 projects, and under Linux I'm making Eclipse projects. I've managed to get my OpenCV stuff ported across successfully, but am having major headaches trying to port my threaded boost apps. Just so we're clear, the steps I have followed so-far on a clean Ubuntu 12 installation. (I've done 2 clean re-installs to try and fix potential library cock-ups, now I'm just giving up and asking): Install Eclipse and Eclipse CDT using my package manager Install CMake and CMake Gui using my package manager Install libboost-all-dev using my package manager So-far that's all I've done. I can create the eclipse project using CMake with no errors, so CMake is successfully finding my boost install. When I try and build through eclipse is when I get issues; The app I'm attempting to build uses boost::asio for some UDP I/O and boost::thread to create worker threads for the asio I/O services. I am trying to link statically, but I believe eclipse should be passing the correct arguments to make that happen since my CMakeLists.txt includes SET(Boost_USE_STATIC_LIBS ON) I'm officially out of ideas here, I have tried doing local builds of boost and a bunch of other stuff with no more success. I even re-installed Ubuntu to ensure I haven't completely fracked the libs directories and links with multiple weird versions or anything else. Any help would be muchly appreciated.

• Microsoft Management Console stops working when I add snap-in to it

  I have Windows 7 Ultimate OS. I'm opening mmc.exe as administrator and trying add Certificates or any other snap-in, then while loading that snap-in MMC breaks and displays following message and after that it closes automatically once I click on close button on that message. What could be the problem? • Pecl complies .so extensions for OSX built-in PHP and not MAMP

  I've installed the sphinx binaries and libraries and am now trying to install the PECL sphinx module. My system is running OS X 10.6 with MAMP 1.8.2 installed. I try to install sphinx using the following command: sudo pecl install sphinx The PECL command outputs the following: running: phpize Configuring for: PHP Api Version: 20090626 Zend Module Api No: 20090626 Zend Extension Api No: 220090626 The versions above don't match the versions listed when doing a phpinfo(). It seems that PECL is trying to complie against the built-in version of PHP. If I ignore the errors and continue the it will successfully compile and place the sphinx.so file in: /usr/lib/php/extensions/no-debug-non-zts-20090626/sphinx.so when in fact it should be: /Applications/MAMP/bin/php5/lib/php/extensions/no-debug-non-zts-20060613/ I've tried copying the sphinx.so file to the MAMP extensions dir but when I restart apache PHP displays the following warning: PHP Startup: Unable to load dynamic library '/Applications/MAMP/bin/php5/lib/php/extensions/no-debug-non-zts-20060613/sphinx.so I think this is because MAMP is 32bit and the built-in PHP is 64bit so PECL complies for 64bit. I might be completely wrong but I did read this when I goggled on the topic. Does anyone know how to get PECL to map to the MAMP version of PHP instead of the built-in version?

• How to run multiple instances of Tor?

  I'm trying to set up a special proxy server (running Windows). It will have several instances of Privoxy and Tor running and my app will choose which Privoxy instance to send HTTP requests to depending on the load. Privoxy will then forward them to Tor. I'm using srvany.exe to create the services. At the moment I'm running 3 Privoxy and 3 Tor services (I copied the binaries to different folders). Each Privoxy service is listening to its own port (8118, 8119, 8120). I can see them listening in a port scanner. This is the application path (for srvany in registry) for the 1st service: C:\Anonymiser\Privoxy 01\privoxy.exe --service I've also configured the Tor services to listen to different ports (9050, 9052, 9054). This is the application path for the 1st service: C:\Anonymiser\Tor 01\tor.exe -f "C:\Anonymiser\Tor 01\torrc" The problem is, when I start the Tor services, only the first service I start is listening to its port. The others aren't listening. They listen if I run them separately. Any ideas what could be wrong? How can I make all 3 services listen on their assigned ports?   I have 5 hard drives in a machine sitting in a cupboard. /dev/sda is a 500GB Seagate drive, and is the boot disk. /dev/sd{b,c,d,e} are 2TB drives in a raid6 configuration. smartctl is showing significantly higher temperatures (like ~140 degrees celsius) on the raid drives than the boot drive. • ssh keys rejected each day

  I've had OpenSSH server running on my debian server for a couple weeks and all of a sudden now when I go to login the next day it rejects my ssh key and I have to manually add a new one each time. Not only that but I have the "tunneling with clear-text passwords" option enabled and the non-root (login with root is disabled) account for that is rejected too. I'm at a loss why this is happening and I can't find any ssh options that would explain it. --update-- I just changed debug level to DEBUG. • Monit - script not being executed as expected

  I'm working on a Windows 7 machine, having a VM for Ubuntu (image disk: 12.04-desktop-i386.iso). On the VM I installed Monit 5.3.2, and configured some processes and applications. So I created a script to run my application. This application should display some content on the screen (Im basically displaying two images, using Feh). The thing is: if I call my script through the command line, it runs ok, and display the images. But if I run through monit, it seems to be running ok, but it doesn't display the images.In the case I try to debug it (remote debug), then I can see the images. So I was supposing this could be some kind of configuration, but didn't find out what (even using the option -I wou'ldn't work). • Apache2 Segmentation fault with wsgi_module

  Apache 2.2.3 is running as an existing web server under RHEL 5. Attempting to set up Trac using wsgi_module. RHEL 5 ships with python 2.4, so in order to use the current version of Trac (1.0) I needed to install it with easy_install-2.6. Trac works with the default mod_python, however users strongly encourage not using this module as it is officially dead. Using RHEL's package manager, I downloaded/installed python26-mod_wsgi.so. I backed up the httpd.conf, then made the following additions: LoadModule wsgi_module modules/python26-mod_wsgi.so #...# WSGIScriptAlias /trac /www/virtualhosts/trac/deploy/cgi-bin/trac.wsgi <Directory /www/virtualhosts/trac/deploy/cgi-bin> WSGIApplicationGroup %{GLOBAL} Order deny,allow Allow from all </Directory> Next I moved trac.conf to trac.conf.bak (contains mod_python calls). I restored my backup copy of httpd.conf, reloaded the server config, and the virtualhosted sites are being served again. • mod_cache not working

  I have a PHP site that has many dynamically generated pages. I'm trying to turn to mod_cache to help boost performance, because in most cases, content does not change in a given day. I have configured mod_cache as best I could, following examples around the web, including the mod_cache page on apache.org. When I set LogLevel debug, I see a bit of information about the caching that is [not] happening. There are plenty of pairs of lines like this: [Fri Jun 01 17:28:18 2012] [debug] mod_cache.c(141): Adding CACHE_SAVE filter for /foo/bar [Fri Jun 01 17:28:18 2012] [debug] mod_cache.c(148): Adding CACHE_REMOVE_URL filter for /foo/bar Which is fine, because I've set CacheEnable disk /foo, to indicate that I want everything under /foo cached. I'm new to mod_cache, but my understanding about these lines is that it just means that mod_cache has acknowledged that the URL is supposed to be cached, but there are supposed to be more lines indicating that it is saving the data to cache, and then later retrieving them on subsequent hits to the same URL. I can hit the same URL till I'm blue in the face, whether with F5 refreshing, or not, or with different browsers, or different computers. It's always that pair of lines that shows in the logs, and nothing else. When I set CacheEnable disk /, then I see more activity. But I don't want to cache the entire site, and there are many, many different subpaths to the site, so I don't want to have to modify code to set no-cache headers in all the necessary places. I'll mention that mod_rewrite is in use here, rewriting /foo/bar to something like index.php?baz=/foo/bar, but my understanding is that mod_cache uses the pre-rewrite URL, not the post-rewrite URL. As far as I can tell, I have the response headers not getting in the way of caching. • Why won't my service start, and why doesn't upstart output any errors?

  I am trying to 'start gunicorn' as a service via upstart as user ale. I'm using gunicorn/flask on ubuntu 12.04 w/ init (upstart 1.5) Here is my /etc/init/gunicorn.conf setuid btw setgid flask script export HOME=/home/btw export WORKON_HOME=$HOME/.virtualenvs . $HOME/.virtualenvs/default/bin/activate cd $HOME/flask workon default gunicorn -c gunicorn.py bw:app end script It doesn't output anything other than gunicorn start/running, process 12992. If i then do 'status gunicorn' I get stop/waiting. any ideas on how to debug this? I tried following http://upstart.ubuntu.com/wiki/Debugging but it didn't help. If I do the following as user ale in the app's directory: 1. workon default 2. gunicorn -c gunicorn.py bw:app then Gunicorn runs fine. Here is ~/flask/gunicorn.py: bind = "0.0.0.0:8080" workers = 3 backlog = 2048 worker_class = "gevent" debug = True daemon = False pidfile ="/tmp/gunicorn.pid" log_level = "debug" accesslog = "/var/log/gunicorn/access.log" errorlog = "/var/log/gunicorn/error.log" user = "btw" group = "flask" Also, /var/log/error.log doesn't show anything new when I try to start the Gunicorn service.   Apache on a production server of mine is seg faulting intermittently. I have enabled core dump option in apache configuration and have several dumped core files. Unfortunately, since it is a production server, apache or the loaded modules are not compiled with debug symbols. From what I understand, gdb cannot do much without debug symbols. Can I at least find out which module is causing the seg fault, without debug symbols? If so, how? • Wordpress on Apache is redirecting all https to http

  I have a problem with a wordpress site on a server I admin. I don't know anything about wordpress however. My problem is that we want the site to be accessed over https, bot somehow all requests to https:// URLs are answered by the server with a 302, redirecting to http. The wordpress site itself is configured to use https, and we see that in the pages that are generated the links are all https links. In the apache config there are no rewrite rules and no redirects. However, any request to a https:// URL is answered with a redirect to the equivalent http URL. And I really would like to know where these redirects are coming from, what is generating these redirects. I've increased the loglevel on the webserver to DEBUG, but did not get any info there. I tried to enable debug logging in wordpress per the recipy I found here: http://codex.wordpress.org/Debugging_in_WordPress But did not get a debug.log file in the directory where one should appear. I'm really at a loss here, and need to fix this urgently. Any hints as where to start looking? Apache is 2.2.14 on Ubuntu. There are several other virtual hosts on this server, using php and https without any problem... Edit: I created a small info.php script and dropped that in the webservers' root. Calling this yields the output of the script, no redirect is generated. This suggest that it's not the webserver, but wordpress that is doing it. A second thing I noticed is that the redirect comes with several cookies, one of which has "httponly" set. Could that be it?

Download and Install Silverlight 4 Tools for VS 2010 To develop Silverlight 4 applications you should first download and install Visual Studio 2010 or download and install the free Visual Web Developer 2010 Express edition. Then install the Silverlight Tools RC2 for Visual Studio 2010.  This setup includes the Silverlight 4 Developer Runtime, Silverlight 4 SDK, RIA Services, and VS 2010 tools support.  Once installed you can do File->New Project and choose Silverlight Application to create your first Silverlight 4 project.  You can then use the new WYSIWYG Silverlight designer in Visual Studio 2010 to design and build rich Silverlight 4 applications. Important: If you previously installed the Silverlight 4 Beta or RC build on your machine, please make sure to go into Add/Remove programs and uninstall the “Update for Visual Studio 2010 (KB976272)” package prior to installing the Silverlight Tools RC2 for Visual Studio 2010 setup.  Note that while Silverlight 4 is released, the “Silverlight 4 Tools for VS 2010” is currently in “RC2” mode (meaning we are going to keep an eye out for any remaining issues before finally calling it done).  We’ll update the tools to be “final” in a few weeks once we verify that no last minute issues/bugs remain. Download and Install Expression Blend 4 Release Candidate You can also download and install the Expression Blend 4 RC to create and design great Silverlight 4 applications.  Blend contains “Sketchflow” support – which makes it really easy to rapidly prototype ideas and applications.  To learn more about Sketchflow watch this 90 second video of it in action. Summary Today’s release is the fourth release of Silverlight that we’ve shipped in the last 2.5 years.  The team has done a great job of advancing it quickly and staying focused.  We think today’s Silverlight 4 release opens up a ton of new opportunities to build great solutions for both consumers and business scenarios.  We are looking forward to seeing what you build with it! • Visual Studio 2010 Beta 2 Startup Failures

  I’ve been working with VS 2010 Beta 2 for a while now and while it works Ok most of the time it seems the environment is very, very fragile when it comes to crashes and installed packages. Specifically I’ve been working just fine for days, then when VS 2010 crashes it will not re-start. Instead I get the good old Application cannot start dialog: Other failures I’ve seen bring forth other just as useful dialogs with information overload like Operation cannot be performed which for me specifically happens when trying to compile any project. After a bit of digging around and a post to Microsoft Connect the solution boils down to resetting the VS.NET environment. The Application Cannot Start issue stems from a package load failure of some sort, so the work around for this is typically: c:\program files\Visual Studio 2010\Common7\IDE\devenv.exe /ResetSkipPkgs In most cases that should do the trick. If it doesn’t and the error doesn’t go away the more drastic: c:\program files\Visual Studio 2010\Common7\IDE\devenv.exe /ResetSettings is required which resets all settings in VS to its installation defaults. Between these two I’ve always been able to get VS to startup and run properly. BTW it’s handy to keep a list of command line options for Visual Studio around: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/xee0c8y7%28VS.100%29.aspx Note that the /? option in VS 2010 doesn’t display all the options available but rather displays the ‘demo version’ message instead, so the above should be helpful. Also note that unless you install Visual C++ the Visual Studio Command Prompt icon is not automatically installed so you may have to navigate manually to the appropriate folder above. Cannot Build Failures If you get the Cannot compile error dialog, there is another thing that have worked for me: Change your project build target from Debug to Release (or whatever – just change it) and compile again. If that doesn’t work doing the reset steps above will do it for me. It appears this failure comes from some sort of interference of other versions of Visual Studio installed on the system and running another version first. Resetting the build target explicitly seems to reset the build providers to a normalized state so that things work in many cases. But not all. Worst case – resetting settings will do it. The bottom line for working in VS 2010 has been – don’t get too attached to your custom settings as they will get blown away quite a bit. I’ve probably been through 20 or more of these VS resets although I’ve been working with it quite a bit on an internal project. It’s kind of frustrating to see this kind of high level instability in a Beta 2 product which is supposedly the last public beta they will put out. On the other hand this beta has been otherwise rather stable and performance is roughly equivalent to VS 2008. Although I mention the crash above – crashes I’ve seen have been relatively rare and no more frequent than in VS 2008 it seems. Given the drastic UI changes in VS 2010 (using WPF for the shell and editor) I’m actually impressed that the product is as stable as it is at this point. Also I was seriously worried about text quality going to a WPF model, but thankfully WPF 4.0 addresses the blurry text issue with native font rendering to render text on non-cleartype enabled systems crisply. Anyway I hope that these notes are helpful to some of you playing around with the beta and running into problems. Hopefully you won’t need them :-}© Rick Strahl, West Wind Technologies, 2005-2010
