  What is the fastest sorting algorithm for a large number (tens of thousands) of groups of 9 positive double precision values, where each group must be sorted individually? So it's got to sort fast a small number of possibly repeated double precision values, many times in a row. The values are in the [0..1] interval. I don't care about space complexity or stability, just about speed.

• How to use bundler gem binaries in path

  I just started using bundler for gem packaging in vendor/. The problem is with certain gems (like rspec and cucumber) that have binaries. The binary path that is under my_app/vendor/gems/ruby/1.8/...cucumber-0.6.2/bin/ is not in my path, therefore when I go to run cucumber i get command cannot be found. What is the easiest way to execute the bundled gem binaries from within the app rather than adding a large number of folders to my path? Thanks

  A subversion repository contains the html, latex and man directories that doxygen generates from the source code. Even for small source code changes, new files are being generated with random names which makes for large changes in the version control system. Is there are way around this? How can I minimize the changesets between revisions while still including doxygen-generated documentation? Alternatively, how could I find which of the doxygen-genrated files are no longer being used and should be removed?

I have a maintenance bug in a VS 2008 project, and have been told that I cannot upgrade the project file. Is there a way for me to make the changes I need to make within VS10 without upgrading the project (including compiling, using the debugger, etc.), or do I need to re-install VS 2008?

• Are Windows Domain Service Accounts Really Necessary?

  One of the biggest problems we have in automating application deployments is the idea that running IIS AppPools and Windows Services under domain service accounts is a 'best practice'. Unfortunately, this best practice sometimes causes deployment headaches in that either we need to provision a new domain level service account quickly, or once we have the account, we now need to manage the account credentials. I had a great conversation about not making domain level service accounts a requirement and effectively taking one of two approaches: Secure at the node level using machine account(domain\machine$) and add the node to appropriate ActiveDirectory/Sql groups/roles Create local app specific accounts on each machine (machine\myapp) and add that account to appropriate ActiveDirectory/Sql groups/roles (the password here can change per deployment, it doesn't need to be stored) In both cases, it seems that its easier to manage either adding an account to appropriate group/role, or even stand up new, local account, than it is to have to provision a new domain level account and manage those credentials. This would hopefully ease the management burden on ActiveDirectory, Sql Server and Operations teams as there would be no more password management. We've not actually been able to implement this in practice yet. I am coming from a development background, so I'm curious as to how many ways this approach could go wrong? Can we really get rid of domain level service accounts with this direction? I'd appreciate any thoughts from anyone who has taken this path! Thanks! Zach

  I have a project and it needs to access a large amount of proprietary data in ASP.NET. This was done on the Linux/PHP by loading the data in shared memory. I was wondering if trying to use Memory Mapped Files would be the way to go, or if there is a better way with better .NET support. I was thinking of using the Data Cache but not sure of all the pitfalls of size of data being saved in the Cache.

  Hi there, I have an algorithm for creating the sieve of Eratosthenes and pulling primes from it. It lets you enter a max value for the sieve and the algorithm gives you the primes below that value and stores these in a c-style array. Problem: Everything works fine with values up to 500.000, however when I enter a large value -while running- it gives me the following error message in xcode: Program received signal: “EXC_BAD_ACCESS”. warning: Unable to restore previously selected frame. Data Formatters temporarily unavailable, will re-try after a 'continue'. (Not safe to call dlopen at this time.) My first idea was that I didn't use large enough variables, but as I am using 'unsigned long long int', this should not be the problem. Also the debugger points me to a point in my code where a point in the array get assigned a value. Therefore I wonder is there a maximum limit to an array? If yes: should I use NSArray instead? If no, then what is causing this error based on this information? EDIT: This is what the code looks like (it's not complete, for it fails at the last line posted).   This great SO answer points to a good sparse solver, but I've got constraints on x (for Ax = b) such that each element in x is >=0 an <=N. The first thing which comes to mind is an QP solver for large sparse matrices. Also, A is huge (around 2e6x2e6) but very sparse with <=4 elements per row. Any ideas/recommendations? I'm looking for something like MATLAB's lsqlin but with huge sparse matrices.

  Why does Qt on OSX appear to default to overly large fonts? Even when you select the same font size manually the fonts appear slightly bigger. Does Qt on OSX use a different font rendering to OSX? Does this improve if you use Qt for Cocoa? In addition, is there a qtconfig tool or equivalent to globally set the font settings for all Qt applications? Thanks!

• Automated regression tests for java applets?

  We're working on a project with a number of applets that has to work across a large range of OS (WIndows, Mac, Linux), browsers (IE, FF, Safari, etc) and Java versions (1.5+), and it often happens that a fix we apply will cause some sort of security exception an another platform or some other error. Is there any way for us to prepare automated tests to immediately catch those problems in different platforms? I think it's not necessary to check that the gui parts are appearing as intended, but just to detect whether unexpected exceptions are occuring.
