• Has anyone "learned how to program in 21 days?"

- by Sheehan Alam
I'm not a fan of these learn how to program in X amount of days books. Some even boast, learn how to program in 24 hours. This is a joke and an insult to me as a software engineer who went through a rigorous discipline in computer science and mathematics. So a question to the community, have you benefited from these become a programmer quick books?

• Engineering techniques to diminish MVVM Driven Development time?

- by Oscar Cabrero
Hi Currently we just start releasing modules for a big project in MVVM but seems like the deliverables are starting to encounter a slowness with this model, such things as the learning curve effort and the fact that mvvm do requires a bit more code than other patterns, What Programming and software engineering techniques do you employ or thing could help us reduce the effort and speed up development? things like code generation with T4 templates, ligth MVVM frameworks, use Expression Blend, hire a designer to hanle UX. Thanks for any advice you could provide.

• What are the elements of a team development suite?

- by mhempey
For small-to-large teams developing software together, what tools are used to form a comprehensive team development framework? Specifically, I'm looking for a comprehensive list of all the individual functions involved (e.g. source control, bug management, testing tools, project management), not specific product recommendations. I'm also not restricting the list to a particular methodology (e.g. Scrum).

• Opinions on Copy Protection / Software Licensing via phoning home?

- by Jakobud
I'm developing some software that I'm going to eventually sell. I've been thinking about different copy protection mechanisms, both custom and 3rd party. I know that no copy protection is 100% full-proof, but I need to at least try. So I'm looking for some opinions to my approach I'm thinking about: One method I'm thinking about is just having my software connect to a remote server when it starts up, in order to verify the license based off the MAC address of the ethernet port. I'm not sure if the server would be running a MySQL database that retrieves the license information, or what... Is there a more simple way? Maybe some type of encrypted file that is read? I would make the software still work if it can't connect to the server. I don't want to lock someone out just because they don't have internet access at that moment in time. In case you are wondering, the software I'm developing is extremely internet/network dependant. So its actually quite unlikely that the user wouldn't have internet access when using it. Actually, its pretty useless without internet/network access. Anyone know what I would do about computers that have multiple MAC addresses? A lot of motherboards these days have 2 ethernet ports. And most laptops have 1 ethernet, 1 wifi and Bluetooth MAC addresses. I suppose I could just pick a MAC port and run with it. Not sure if it really matters A smarty and tricky user could determine the server that the software is connecting to and perhaps add it to their host file so that it always trys to connect to localhost. How likely do you think this is? And do you think its possible for the software to check if this is being done? I guess parsing of the host file could always work. Look for your server address in there and see if its connecting to localhost or something. I've considered dongles, but I'm trying to avoid them just because I know they are a pain to work with. Keeping them updated and possibly requiring the customer to run their own license server is a bit too much for me. I've experienced that and it's a bit of a pain that I wouldn't want to put my customers through. Also I'm trying to avoid that extra overhead cost of using 3rd party dongles. Also, I'm leaning toward connecting to a remote server to verify authentication as opposed to just sending the user some sort of license file because what happens when the user buys a new computer? I have to send them a replacement license file that will work with their new computer, but they will still be able to use it on their old computer as well. There is no way for me to 'de-authorize' their old computer without asking them to run some program on it or something. Also, one important note, with the software I would make it very clear to the user in the EULA that the software connects to a remote server to verify licensing and that no personal information is sent. I know I don't care much for software that does that kinda stuff without me knowing. Anyways, just looking for some opinions for people who have maybe gone down this kinda road. It seems like remote-server-dependent-software would be one of the most effective copy-protection mechanisms, not just because of difficulty of circumventing, but also could be pretty easy to manage the licenses on the developers end.

• Book recommendation for project architecture?

- by Mark
I already have a solid knowledge of Object-oriented PHP as well as HTML/Javascript/MySQL plus a basis in Java. Now I would like to implement my projects in an efficient way, whether it is a web project in PHP or an Android application. My problem is once my code gets bigger I start messing error handling, with form validation etc, and I guess its because of my poor basis in software architecture. Thanks.

• Windows development on a Mac Pro

- by Frank
Looking to do iphone, android, and possibly windows phone development on a Mac Pro. What are the pluses and minuses of using a Mac Pro and a dual boot. Unlike most, Windows 7 will be the primary OS since most supporting software will be done with Visual Studio 08/10 over the next year. I have found driver issues from a few years ago. Do any of these issues still exist?

• What tool to use to draw file tree diagram

- by Michael
Given a file tree - a directory with directories in it etc, what software would you recommend to create a diagram of the file-tree as a graphic file that I can embed in a word processor document I prefer vector (SVG, EPS, EMF...) files. The tool must run on Windows, but preferably cross-platform. The tool may be commercial but preferably free.

• Need help with software licensing? Read on…

- by juanlarios
Figuring out which software licensing options best suit your needs while being cost-effective can be confusing. Some businesses end up making their purchases through retail stores which means they miss out on volume licensing opportunities and others may unknowingly be using unlicensed software which means their business may be at risk. So let me help you make the best decision for your situation. You may want to review this blog post that lays out licensing basics for any organization that needs to license software for more than 5 or less than 250 devices or users. It details the different ways you can buy a license and what choices are available for volume licensing, which can give you pricing advantages and provide flexible options for your business. As technology evolves and more organizations move to online services such as Microsoft Office 365, Microsoft Dynamics CRM Online, Windows Azure Platform, Windows Intune and others, it’s important to understand how to purchase, activate and use online service subscriptions to get the most out of your investment. • Squid + Dans Guardian (simple configuration)

- by The Digital Ninja
I just built a new proxy server and compiled the latest versions of squid and dansguardian. We use basic authentication to select what users are allowed outside of our network. It seems squid is working just fine and accepts my username and password and lets me out. But if i connect to dans guardian, it prompts for username and password and then displays a message saying my username is not allowed to access the internet. Its pulling my username for the error message so i know it knows who i am. The part i get confused on is i thought that part was handled all by squid, and squid is working flawlessly. Can someone please double check my config files and tell me if i'm missing something or there is some new option i must set to get this to work. dansguardian.conf # Web Access Denied Reporting (does not affect logging) # # -1 = log, but do not block - Stealth mode # 0 = just say 'Access Denied' # 1 = report why but not what denied phrase # 2 = report fully # 3 = use HTML template file (accessdeniedaddress ignored) - recommended # reportinglevel = 3 # Language dir where languages are stored for internationalisation. # The HTML template within this dir is only used when reportinglevel # is set to 3. • What does "enterprise" means in relation to software architecture?

- by SkonJeet
I see the term "enterprise" being thrown around software developers and programmers a lot and used loosely it seems. en·ter·prise/'ent?r?priz/ Noun: A project or undertaking, typically one that is difficult or requires effort. Initiative and resourcefulness. Can someone please clarify what this term actually encompasses? "At an enterprise level", "enterprise scale"? There are even "enterprise editions" of things. What exactly does it mean? It obviously doesn't make sense judging by the above definition so more specifically to software what does one mean when using the word enterprise? EDIT: To add a spin on this - how does this term then fit into phrases such as Enterprise Framework Model? What does data access and data context have to do with company-wide descriptions?

• What are the leading professional journals in software development?

- by Austin Hyde
In one of my classes, we were asked to research the top professional journals in our field. According to what I can dig up, the ACM and IEEE journals are the "best", as they come up at the top of my searches and this question. However, there are a dozen or so individually topic-ed journals for each, with no very clear measure of which one is most useful, popular, etc. For example, "IEEE Software" vs. "IEEE Transactions on Software Engineering". So, what do you consider to be the "leading" professional journals (specifically), and why? It doesn't have to be only ACM or IEEE, either. If you know of another, please add it.

• Do most companies not know how to write software?

- by SnOrfus
If you're an active reader here, try to think about how many times you've heard (and even agreed) when someone here has told someone else to start looking for a new job. Personally, I've seen it a lot more than I expected: it's almost starting to sound cliche. I get that there are bound to be a number of companies that are bad at developing software or managing a software project, but it almost seems like it's getting worse and more frequent, maybe we're just hearing from them and not all of the places that have decent work atmospheres/conditions. So I ask: In your experience, and through your developer friends do you find that it is common that companies have bad development environments and if so: Why do you think it's common? What do you think could be done to fix it as a developer, as a manager, as an industry? Do you think it's improving?

• What are some techniques to monitor multiple instances of a piece of software?

- by Geo Ego
I have a piece of self-serve kiosk software that will be running at multiple sites. I'd like to monitor their status remotely. The kiosk application itself is pretty much finished. I am now in the process of creating a piece of software that will monitor all of the kiosks from a central location so that the customer can view particular details remotely (for instance, how many bills are in the acceptor's cash cartridge, what customer is currently logged in, etc.). Because I am in such an early stage of development, my options are quite open. I understand that I'm not giving very many qualifications, but I'd like to try to get a good variety of potential solutions. Some details: Kiosk software is a VB6 app running on Windows Embedded Monitoring software will be run on a modern desktop version of Windows (either XP, Vista, or 7) Database is SQL Server 2008 My initial idea was to develop a .NET app that would simply report the last database transaction for each kiosk at a set interval (say every second or so) but I'd really like for the kiosk software to report its status directly. I'm not exactly sure where to begin in terms of what modifications may need to be made to the kiosk software, and what the monitoring software will require. Links to articles on these topics would be most welcome.

• Do I need to contact a lawyer to report a GPL violation in software distributed on Apple's App Store?

- by Rinzwind
Some company is selling software through Apple's App Store which uses portions of code that I released publicly under the GPL. The company is violating the licensing terms in two ways, by (1) not preserving my copyright statement, and not releasing their code under the GPL license and (2) by distributing my GPL-licensed code through Apple's App Store. (The Free Software Foundation has made clear that the terms of the GPL and those of the App Store are incompatible.) I want to report this to Apple, and ask that they take appropriate action. I have tried mailing them to ask for more information about the reporting process, and have received the automated reply quoted below. The last point in the list of things one needs to provide, the “a statement by you, made under penalty of perjury,” sounds as if they mean some kind of specific legal document. I'm not sure. Does this mean I need to contact a lawyer just to file the report? I'd like to avoid going through that hassle if at all possible. (Besides an answer to this specific question, I'd welcome comments and experience reports from anyone who has already had to deal with a GPL violation on Apple's App Store.) Thank you for contacting Apple's Copyright Agent. If you believe that your work has been copied in a way that constitutes infringement on Apple’s Web site, please provide the following information: an electronic or physical signature of the person authorized to act on behalf of the owner of the copyright interest; a description of the copyrighted work that you claim has been infringed; a description of where the material that you claim is infringing is located on the site; your address, telephone number, and email address; a statement by you that you have a good faith belief that the disputed use is not authorized by the copyright owner, its agent, or the law; a statement by you, made under penalty of perjury, that the above information in your Notice is accurate and that you are the copyright owner or authorized to act on the copyright owner’s behalf. For further information, please review Apple's Legal Information & Notices/Claims of Copyright Infringement at: http://www.apple.com/legal/trademark/claimsofcopyright.html To expedite the processing of your claim regarding any alleged intellectual property issues related to iTunes (music/music videos, podcasts, TV, Movies), please send a copy of your notice to [email protected] For claims concerning a software application, please send a copy of your notice to [email protected]. Due to the high volume of e-mails we receive, this may be the only reply you receive from [email protected]. Please be assured, however, that Apple's Copyright Agent and/or the iTunes Legal Team will promptly investigate and take appropriate action concerning your report.

• php soapclient responds as 'null' but xml response is ok using __getLastResponse

- by Roger S
I'm looking for help with a php soapclient call: The call is to a remote panel and I want to pull off the log data. There are various services published via the WSDL and I am able to use several with no issues. Here's the list: array(12) { [0]=> string(77) "GetGPTimerChannelsResponse GetGPTimerChannels(GetGPTimerChannels $parameters)" [1]=> string(74) "GetGPTimerChannelResponse GetGPTimerChannel(GetGPTimerChannel $parameters)" [2]=> string(74) "SetGPTimerChannelResponse SetGPTimerChannel(SetGPTimerChannel $parameters)" [3]=> string(47) "GetSlaveResponse GetSlave(GetSlave $parameters)" [4]=> string(71) "GetLogDataInlineResponse GetLogDataInline(GetLogDataInline $parameters)" [5]=> string(71) "GetLogItemInlineResponse GetLogItemInline(GetLogItemInline $parameters)" [6]=> string(59) "GetAlarmListResponse GetAlarmList(GetAlarmList $parameters)" [7]=> string(50) "GetSyslogResponse GetSyslog(GetSyslog $parameters)" [8]=> string(47) "SetSlaveResponse SetSlave(SetSlave $parameters)" [9]=> string(53) "GetVersionResponse GetVersion(GetVersion $parameters)" [10]=> string(53) "GetTDBInfoResponse GetTDBInfo(GetTDBInfo $parameters)" [11]=> string(53) "GetLogItemResponse GetLogItem(GetLogItem $parameters)" } I am trying to use the GetLogDataInline service which requires four parameters - these I'm passing as an array and all seems OK when doing the connection (the request/response takes around 30 seconds to process). When I look at a var_dump / print_r of the result, it returns NULL, whereas when I do a call to the __getLastResponse all of the data I need to populate my local database is there. Below is the code for the soapclient call: $client = new soapclient ("http://192.168.1.126/cgi-bin/cgi.cgi?WSDL", array("trace" => 1, "exceptions" => true, "cache_wsdl" => WSDL_CACHE_NONE, "features" => SOAP_SINGLE_ELEMENT_ARRAYS )); $params = array ( "ResponseType" => "Xml", "Step" => 15, "Start" => "2012-06-14T12:00:00+01:00", "End" => "2012-06-14T23:59:45+01:00" ); $result = $client -> GetLogDataInline ($params); An extract from the var_dump / __getLastResponse is: var_dump($client) object(SoapClient)#1 (4) { ["trace"]= int(1) ["_features"]= int(1) ["_soap_version"]= int(1) ["sdl"]= resource(4) of type (Unknown) } var_dump($result) NULL __getLastResponse 15 2012-06-14T12:00:00+01:00 2012-06-14T23:59:45+01:00 External Temperature Workshop Lux Level Electricity Pulse 100wh Workshop PIR Active Boiler Flow Temp Outside Lux Workshop_Light_Override_Hours Water Consumption (Litres) Electricity kWh Consumption Water Consumption M3 Gas kWh Consumption Outside Lighting Heating Effective Setpoint Router Reset Workshop Lighting State Heating Run Hours Heating On Receptin Percent RH Reception Temp Reception RH Reception Temp 2012-06-14T12:00:00+01:00 -85.6 2.1 -1.0 Off -91.5 13.8 0.0 -1.0 0.0 0.0 -0.1 Off 21.0 Off Off 0.0 Off 53.0 22.0 53.0 22.0 2012-06-14T12:00:15+01:00 -85.4 2.1 -1.0 Off -91.8 13.8 0.0 -1.0 0.0 0.0 -0.1 Off 21.0 Off Off 0.0 Off 53.0 22.0 53.0 22.0 2012-06-14T12:00:30+01:00 -85.4 2.1 -1.0 Off -91.8 13.8 0.0 -1.0 0.0 0.0 -0.1 Off 21.0 Off Off 0.0 Off 53.0 22.0 53.0 22.0 2012-06-14T12:00:45+01:00 -85.4 2.1 -1.0 Off -91.5 13.7 0.0 -1.0 0.0 0.0 -0.1 Off 21.0 Off Off 0.0 Off 54.0 22.0 54.0 22.0 (this should be xml but doesn't appear to have copied correctly) If you've got this far, thanks for taking the time. • I have Eclipse 3.5.2 on my 64-bit Ubuntu 10.10 box, but I cannot use Eclipse install new software

- by Joe C
I have Ubuntu 10.10 64-bit. I installed Eclipse via the $ sudo apt-get install eclipse $ sudo apt-get install eclipse-cdt I ended up with Eclpse 3.5.2. It works like a charm. But there was no adb. So I went to Help-Install new Software and it let's me choose the Galileo update site. But when I use it, it just says No Repository found. My immediate goal is to install ADB. But I'd like to install the entire ADT and I'd like "Install New Software..." in my Eclipse in general to work.

• What is the version numbering logic for open source developers managing software releases?

- by Stephen Myall
I guess this is more of a general question that I cant find the the answer to anywhere. What is the version numbering logic for open source developers managing software releases and is there any governance or guidance I can read up on. The origins of this question comes from me reviewing and researching software on countless websites that I would like to use on my Ubuntu OS. Through experience, I am learning some sites are much better than others explaining if a release is a stable, experimental or maintenance release but these explanations are not consistent with any version numbering logic I am familiar with.

• Which non-clustered index should I use?

- by Junior Mayhé
Here I am studying nonclustered indexes on SQL Server Management Studio. I've created a table with more than 1 million records. This table has a primary key. CREATE TABLE [dbo].[Customers]( [CustomerId] [int] IDENTITY(1,1) NOT NULL, [CustomerName] [varchar](100) NOT NULL, [Deleted] [bit] NOT NULL, [Active] [bit] NOT NULL, CONSTRAINT [PK_Customers] PRIMARY KEY CLUSTERED ( [CustomerId] ASC )WITH (PAD_INDEX = OFF, STATISTICS_NORECOMPUTE = OFF, IGNORE_DUP_KEY = OFF, ALLOW_ROW_LOCKS = ON, ALLOW_PAGE_LOCKS = ON) ON [PRIMARY] ) ON [PRIMARY] This is the query I'll be using to see what execution plan is showing: SELECT CustomerName FROM Customers Well, executing this command with no additional non-clustered index, it leads the execution plan to show me: I/O cost = 3.45646 Operator cost = 4.57715 Now I'm trying to see if it's possible to improve performance, so I've created a non-clustered index for this table: 1) First non-clustered index CREATE NONCLUSTERED INDEX [IX_CustomerID_CustomerName] ON [dbo].[Customers] ( [CustomerId] ASC, [CustomerName] ASC )WITH (PAD_INDEX = OFF, STATISTICS_NORECOMPUTE = OFF, SORT_IN_TEMPDB = OFF, IGNORE_DUP_KEY = OFF, DROP_EXISTING = OFF, ONLINE = OFF, ALLOW_ROW_LOCKS = ON, ALLOW_PAGE_LOCKS = ON) ON [PRIMARY] GO Executing again the select against Customers table, the execution plan shows me: I/O cost = 2.79942 Operator cost = 3.92001 It seems better. Now I've deleted this just created non-clustered index, in order to create a new one: 2) First non-clustered index CREATE NONCLUSTERED INDEX [IX_CustomerIDIncludeCustomerName] ON [dbo].[Customers] ( [CustomerId] ASC ) INCLUDE ( [CustomerName]) WITH (PAD_INDEX = OFF, STATISTICS_NORECOMPUTE = OFF, SORT_IN_TEMPDB = OFF, IGNORE_DUP_KEY = OFF, DROP_EXISTING = OFF, ONLINE = OFF, ALLOW_ROW_LOCKS = ON, ALLOW_PAGE_LOCKS = ON) ON [PRIMARY] GO With this new non-clustered index, I've executed the select statement again and the execution plan shows me the same result: I/O cost = 2.79942 Operator cost = 3.92001 So, which non-clustered index should I use? Why the costs are the same on execution plan for I/O and Operator? Am I doing something wrong or this is expected? thank you

• Software Productivity Tools-> The Missing Link?

In an op-ed piece in this months SD Times, I make the argument that software development productivity tools have evolved over the years to become more mainstream. I make the case that while some developers shun tools, in reality they take for granted the tools they are using today that were not available 10 years or so ago, or were not that mature. For example today we use some tools without even thinking such as: SCM, build management, standards enforcement, ORM and UI components. Tools today save a team a tremendous amount of time and are the missing link in the software development process. You can get the March issue of SD Times on the newsstands today or read my article online here. • To what extent do code-signing certificates boost sales of your software?

- by Dan W
In the experiences of everyone here, have you found a certificate to boost sales of your (downloadable) program? I produce .NET software and upon clicking the installation file, Windows 7 pops up a message saying the software is from an "unknown publisher" and to proceed with caution. For Windows 8, this appears to be even more prominent, and may adversely affect the number of downloads, and therefore the number of sales. A certificate will help soften this 'warning' by (for example) changing the warning's colour from orange to blue, and give the publisher's name instead of 'unknown'. But I'd like more tangible evidence since many people are obviously used to that message, and may not care and download anyway. So has anyone noticed a jump in sales after the switch?
