• Unable to connect to wireless internet(wifi) through KDE plasma desktop

  I installed the KDE plasma desktop through Ubuntu software center. I am on Ubuntu Lucid Lynx. After the install, Im unable to connect to my wifi connection in the KDE session. But I can connect to my wifi perfectly through GNOME session. I've tried a lot without much success. Also KDE doesn't store my password correctly and keeps prompting for authorization again and again. Some of the things that I noticed. Network is detected, Network name and strength is also displayed. Other characteristics also appear properly. When the credentials are supplied, it accepts them and continually displays the message "Setting network address". However this process never succeeds. At this stage the password is repeatedly asked many times but the connection is never established. Some of the other things that I did, I have also tried other things like restarting my modem and the computer. That didn't work. I tried to restart nm-applet and KNetworkManager. That didn't work either. ifconfig display all my interfaces and Mac addresses correctly. Since its working fine GNOME the drivers are fine. This is sure a KDE specific issue. Other threads related to this on the interwebs don't offer much information either. Please share a solution for this.

• JDBC Connection Pools in Glassfish

  I've been attempting to configure Glassfish 3.1.2.2 for ADF 11g and the need arose to create a jdbc connection pool to my Oracle XE 11g database. While this is really very trivial there were no samples of how to do this and documentation, while good, rarely ever provides concrete examples. After fumbling around for a few minutes searching for an example I gave up and figured it out on my own. Here are the steps for any of you that may be in need. This can be done either via the Glassfish command line tool asadmin or through the admin console. I'm doing this through the admin console. Start Glassfish and connect to the admin console with the credentials you defined at installation: http://localhost:4848 Navigate to Resources | JDBC | JDBC Connection Pools and select New. Be sure to enter Resource Type & Datasource Classname under General Settings tab. You can go with the defaults for Pool Settings etc... View Image Go to the Additional Properties tab and create username, password, and url properties with the respective values. View Image Navigate to Resources | JDBC | JDBC Resources and select New. Be sure to enter the JNDI Name and select the Pool Name for the jdbc connection pool you created previously. View Image Navigate to Configurations | server-config | JVM Settings and select the JVM Options tab. Add the values highlighted: -Doracle.jdbc.J2EE13Compliant=true is used to make sure the driver behaves in a JEE-compliant manner. View Image To integrate the JDBC driver into a GlassFish Server domain, copy the JAR files into the domain-dir/lib directory, then restart the server. The JAR file for the Oracle 11 database driver is ojdbc6dms.jar. An upcoming entry will demonstrate configuring Glassfish for Oracle ADF Applications.

  Part 1 of “Troubleshooting EBS Discovery Issues”, which was posted on May 17th, focused on the diagnostics associated with the initial discovery of an EBS instances (e.g., Forms servers, APPL_TOPs, databases, etc.).Part 2 focuses on verifying parameters of the Change Management features, also called "Pack Diagnostics, specifically for Customization Manager, Patch Manager, Setup Manager, Automated Cloning, and User Monitoring.  As stated in the first post, there can be numerous reasons that Discovery fails - credentials, file-level permissions, patch levels - just to name a few.The Discovery Wizard can be accessed from the EBS homepage.  From the home page, click "Pack Diagnostics"Click "Create" to define the diagnostic processProvide the required inputs; Name, Module (i.e., Customization Manager, Patch Manager, Setup Manager, Automated Cloning, and User Monitoring), Show Details (typically "All"), and Category (typically check both Generic and User Specific).  Add the appropriate targets.Once the diagnostic process has completed, view the results.  Click on "Succeeded" or "Failed" in the Status column.Expand the entire tree and click on each "Succeeded/Failed" status to see the results of each test within that task.Sample output verifying o/s user name and required patches Additional sample output showing a failed testComplete descriptions of, as well as recommended corrective actions for, all of the diagnostic tests that are run in EM 12c is found in this spreadsheet.  Additional information can be found in the Application Management Pack User Guide.

• Windows Azure Mobile Services: New support for iOS apps, Facebook/Twitter/Google identity, Emails, SMS, Blobs, Service Bus and more

  A few weeks ago I blogged about Windows Azure Mobile Services - a new capability in Windows Azure that makes it incredibly easy to connect your client and mobile applications to a scalable cloud backend. Earlier today we delivered a number of great improvements to Windows Azure Mobile Services.  New features include: iOS support – enabling you to connect iPhone and iPad apps to Mobile Services Facebook, Twitter, and Google authentication support with Mobile Services Blob, Table, Queue, and Service Bus support from within your Mobile Service Sending emails from your Mobile Service (in partnership with SendGrid) Sending SMS messages from your Mobile Service (in partnership with Twilio) Ability to deploy mobile services in the West US region All of these improvements are now live in production and available to start using immediately. Below are more details on them: iOS Support This week we delivered initial support for connecting iOS based devices (including iPhones and iPads) to Windows Azure Mobile Services.  Like the rest of our Windows Azure SDK, we are delivering the native iOS libraries to enable this under an open source (Apache 2.0) license on GitHub.  We’re excited to get your feedback on this new library through our forum and GitHub issues list, and we welcome contributions to the SDK. • Manage Sending 2010 Documents to the Web with Office Upload Center

  One of the main new features being touted in Office 2010 is the ability to upload documents to the Web for sharing and collaboration. Today we look at using Office Upload Center to help manage your uploaded documents. Microsoft Office Upload Center  When you upload an Office 2010 document to the web, a handy tool to manage them is the Office Upload Center. It’s a way to see what is being uploaded or what might have failed to reach the servers. It lets you know if a document failed to upload for some reason. In this case it looks like the incorrect credentials were entered when signing into Windows Live. Click on the Resolve button to get a list of actions you can take to get things corrected.   You can access the Upload Center from the icon which appears on the System Tray when uploading documents. Right-click the icon to control notifications, pause uploads, and access its settings. In the Settings section you can choose how Upload Center displays notifications, select the number of days to keep files in Cache, and delete currently cached files. If you find yourself uploading several documents to the web during the day, the Office Upload Center is a nice feature for managing them. • Useful certifications for a young programmer

  As @Paddyslacker elegantly stated in Are certifications worth it? The main purpose of certifications is to make money for the certifying body. I am a fairly young developer, with only an undergraduate degree, and my job is (graciously) offering to sponsor some professional development of my choice (provided it can be argued that it will contribute to the quality of work I do for them). A search online offers a slew of (mostly worthless) certifications one can attain. I'm wondering if there are any that are actually recognized in the (North American) industry as an asset. My local university promoted CIPS (I.S.P., ITCP) at the time I was graduating, but for all I can tell it's just the one that happened to get its foot in the door. It's certainly money grubbing - with a $205 a year fee. So are there any such certifications that provide useful credentials? To better define 'useful' - would it benefit full time developers, or is it only something worth while to the self-employed? Would any certifications lead me to being considered for higher wages, or can that only be achieved with more experience and an higher-level degree?

  I have created a blog on blogger few days ago and created two blog entries on it. when i try creating AdSense account with blog's address it does not accept the application due to PageType. i have searched around on the net and found that its probably due to duplicate or insufficient content on the blog but either of my blog entry is more than 2,000 words and i have literally typed 80 percent of its content with only few code blocks copied from other sites.   I'm trying to access WSDL(Web Service Definition Language) file using SoapClient() of PHP. I found that WSDL file is authenticated. I tried with passing credentials on an array by another parameter and active SSL on my server, still I'm getting an error. • OS X Mavericks Won't Connect To Ubuntu Server (Netatalk, Avahi)

  I'm really sorry for posting this. I know it may have been asked a thousand times. I have googled like crazy and I'm on the verge of desperation here. Basically, I followed this guide: http://motionsoundfx.com/2012/05/ubuntu-vnc-afp-macosx/ To create a small personal file server. When I installed it, I was able to connect to it just fine, I connected with my Ubuntu username and password and I was able to see the home directory. But later, I had to restart the file server so I could prepare a couple of other hard drives to put in. When the server restarted, I tried to connect to it, but I got an error message on my Mac: "The version of the server you're trying to connect to is not supported. Please contact your system administrator to solve this problem." Again, I have googled like crazy for this, and everybody says it is a problem with OS X Lion and up (assuming it affects Mavericks too). I have tried all the fixes mentioned for Lion and Mountain Lion and I haven't had any luck. That's the reason I'm posting this here: I suspect the problem is with my Ubuntu server. This happened after I restarted the server. Before restarting the server, I just put in my credentials and saw my home directory. Something when I restarted the server must have been messed up. I have found some other solutions, including to use "SHX2" in the conf file, but it hasn't worked for me. I ask for your help to solve this issue. Also please understand I'm completely illiterate when it comes to Linux. This is a nice chance to me to learn the OS so please give me detailed steps to do things if you deem it necessary. Thank you! I'm using Ubuntu Server 13.10 (the latest one as of today).

• My sound stopped working today, how can I fix it?

  This seems to be a problem with pulseaudio. I was logged in over VNC on my phone and started playing a video this caused X to crash (as sometimes happens). I restarted and suddenly the sound doesn't work. I have a Intel HDA/Realtek ALC889 00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation 82801JI (ICH10 Family) HD Audio Controller alsamixer is detecting this just fine. PulseAudio doesn't detect this alsa device so is using auto_null as the default sink (logs below). When I properly kill PulseAudio (tell it not to auto-start) direct ALSA communication with the sound card works just fine. speaker-test, for example, works. So the hardware and ALSA layers are fine IMO. In the logs, it seems that the card might be "busy" but I really don't know how or why it would be now (and never before). Is there an ALSA lock file somewhere that it still there because of my crash? I just ran sudo fuser /dev/snd/* and saw this: oli@bert:~$ sudo fuser /dev/snd/* /dev/snd/controlC0: 1884 /dev/snd/pcmC0D0c: 1884m /dev/snd/timer: 1884 A look at the process list (ps aux | grep 1884) tells me process 1884 is arecord -c 1 -f S16_LE -r 8000 -t raw. • Silverlight 4 Twitter Client &ndash; Part 6

  In this post, we are going to look into implementing lists into our twitter application and also about enhancing the data grid to display the status messages in a pleasing way with the profile images. Twitter lists are really cool feature that they recently added, I love them and I’ve quite a few lists setup one for DOTNET gurus, SQL Server gurus and one for a few celebrities. You can follow them here. Now let us move onto our tutorial. 1) Lists can be subscribed to in two ways, one can be user’s own lists, which he has created and another one is the lists that the user is following. Like for example, I’ve created 3 lists myself and I am following 1 other lists created by another user. Both of them cannot be fetched in the same api call, its a two step process. 2) In the TwitterCredentialsSubmit method we’ve in Home.xaml.cs, let us do the first api call to get the lists that the user has created. For this the call has to be made to https://twitter.com/<TwitterUsername>/lists.xml. We will look into this method in detail soon. For now let us get the buttons displayed. 5) Now the user might have some lists to which he has subscribed to. We need to create a button for these as well. In the end of TwitterCredentialsSubmit method, we need to make a call to http://api.twitter.com/1/<TwitterUsername>/lists/subscriptions.xml. Reference is available here. So that is what I’ve done in this method, if the listName has got “@” and “/” I build the url differently. 9) Until now, we’ve been using only a few nodes of the status message xml string, now we will look to fetch a new field - “profile_image_url”. Images in datagrid – COOL. • Can Near Field Communications (NFC) Benefit your Supply Chain?

  Leading firms continue to leverage the latest tools and technologies to drive performance especially around minimizing transaction costs. With razor thin margins in manufacturing and distribution, the leading producers are resorting to Near Field Communications to gain efficiencies.  In this week’s CIO magazine (Apr1, 2012, pg.30, see http://www.cio.com)  Lauren Brousell talks of the things you need to know to make a more informed decision with NFC.  Sandy Shen of Gartner says NFC appeals because "it supports any services that requires data transfer and authentication' 1. NFC is Cheap and Easy - short range transmitting technology connecting smartphones to data transfer. 2. Adoption Seems Inevitable - more merchants will use NCF for payments in the futures. Wallets are becoming obsolete. 3. It's a Hot Potato for Enterprise - Business with credit card companies and cell phone providers are debating who handles the billing process. 4. It's in use Overseas. Japan uses FeliCa to pay by smartphone. In the US, billing agreements are causing territorial conflict. 5. Security Risks Come Standard. As people lose HH devices, security will be an ongoing concern. Credentials and timeout features and alleviate to some extent. My prediction: In 5 years, we won't have wallets in our pockets.  Our secure and all-powerful smart phones will be our electronic portable banks and execute the transaction for us based on our preferences and propensities and electronically execute the transaction for the supply chain.

• Steam (via Wine) crashes after login - any troubleshooting tips?

  The Steam client crashes after I login. After submitting my credentials, Steam displays a dialog box informing me the client is 'connecting'. I then see the Steam main page and news page displayed for roughly a second or so before the client crashes. I'm running Ubuntu 10.10 (I think..what's the best way to verify? uname only displays Linux) which I've installed on a usb flash drive using a capser-rw file for persistence. wine-1.3.14 I'm not sure how to troubleshoot. How do I identify if the problem is with wine or steam or the video card driver, or what? • Setup for mounting kerberized nfs home directory - gssd not finding valid kerberos ticket

  Our home directories are exported via kerberized nfs, so the user needs a valid kerberos ticket to be able to mount its home. This setup works fine with our existing clients & server. • Big AdventureWorks2012

  Last week I launched AdventureWorks on Azure, an initiative to make SQL Azure accessible to anyone, in my blog post AdventureWorks2012 now available for all on SQL Azure. Since then I think its fair to say that the reaction has been lukewarm with 31 insertions into the [dbo].[SqlFamily] table and only 8 donations via PayPal to support it; on the other hand those 8 donators have been incredibly generous and we nearly have enough in the bank to cover a full year’s worth of availability. It was always my intention to try and make this offering more appealing and to that end I have used an adapted version of Adam Machanic’s make_big_adventure.sql script to massively increase the amount of data in the database and give the community more scope to really push SQL Azure and see what it is capable of.   Its been long due I was planning to write an article on creating some useful ASP.NET MVC application. I have code named it "DailyJournal". Its a simple application which allows creation of multiple activities and assign tasks to these activities. Its' kind of "Yet another Task/Todo application". But, I try to cover that up in the next update once I get my head around this. The application in its current state supports the following features Create users Assign Activities to users Assign tasks to activities Assign a status to a task The user creation/authentication is being done by the default Membership provider. Most of the activities are highly visual i.e. you can drag-drop task to different areas, in-place edition of task details and so on.   The following are the current issues with the design which I promise to refactor in the second version.   I just upgraded Ubuntu from 13.04 to 13.10, and now I can't log into Active Directory; my system is integrated using PowerBroker Identity Services (PBIS), which used to be called Likewise-Open. So far I have identified the following symptoms: I am able to log in with my credentials via ssh. The screen goes black when attempting log into my account via the login screen. I've tried leaving the domain, purging PBIS, and re-installing the latest version of PBIS. I've been trying the troubleshooting section I found here, but I haven't had any success.
