• Wear and tear on server hard drive from filesystem polling by PHP script

  So I'm working on a discussion platform, and various clients will visit http://host/thread.php, which will render the discussion thread to date in addition to a form to submit a new post. When a new post is submitted, I would like all of the other clients with browser windows open to have it appear in near-real-time. One of the constraints of my script is that it may not use a DBMS and it must stay in the filesystem. Additionally, I can't use any PECL/PEAR extensions like inotify or anything like that for IPC. The flow will look like this: Client A requests thread.php and the thread is so far empty, but nonetheless it opens a Server-Side Event at eventPusher.php. Client B does the same. Client A fills out a post in the form and and submits (POSTs) it to subHandler.php. ??? (subHandler stores the new submission into the main thread storefile which gets read from when a fresh, new client requests thread.php, in addition to somehow signalling to the continually-running eventPusher event-source that a new comment was posted and that it should echo the event-json to the client. How, exactly, it will send this signal I'm yet unsure of, but there are a few options that I've thought of -- this is the crux of the question, so see below for more clarification) eventPusher.php happily pushes the new event to the client and it shows up soon after it was originally submitted on all clients who have the page open's screens. Now for the #4 missing-link mystery-step, I see a few problems. I mean, either way, eventPusher is gonna be doing a while loop of some sort -- it's gonna be polling something, I think that much is clear. (If that's a bad assumption please do let me know.) Now, the simplest way would be subHandler gets invoked on the form submission, writes it to the main store in addition to newComments.xml, then exits without doing anything else. Then eventPusher checks in newComments.xml every X seconds (by the way, what would be a reasonable time interval here?) and if it finds something then it emits an event to the client. Now, my fear with this is that the server's hard drive will have to constantly start spinning up. Maybe this isn't the case, perhaps it would just get cached in RAM and the linux kernel would take care of this transparently such that filesystem access doesn't actually engage the device because the kernel knows that that particular file hasn't changed since last read. * idea #2: I have no idea how to go about this, but perhaps there is a variable scope that gets stored in general RAM on the system which can be read by any process. Like if we mega-exported a bash variable so that $new_post is normally false but it gets toggled to true by subHandler, and then back to flase once it's pushed to the client. I doubt there's such a variable scope in PHP directly, but I struggle with the concept of variable scope, I just can't seem to understand it no matter what I read on it. * idea #3: eventPusher queries ps in its whileloop for another instance of itself. If there's not another eventPusher active then it's highly unlikely that new comments will be getting submitted. It's okay if this only works =90% of the time, it doesn't need to be completely foolproof. * idea #4: eventPusher queries DMESG to see if that file's been written to recently. So to sum everything up, I need to have inter-php-script-communication in near-real-time that will work on a standard mod_php shared hosting setup without any elevated privileges, PHP addon modules, or other system adjustments that can't be done from the PHP script itself at runtime. With*out* spinning up the drive more than a few times. No SQL servers either. Apologies if my english isn't the best, I'm still trying to improve on it.

  I am very new at admining mysql, and bad for me, something caused the db to get clobbered. There are many error messages in the log that I am not sure how to safely proceed. Can you give some tips? • MVC - Ajax form - return partial view doesnt update in <div> target

  I have an index view that I want to update automatically as the user types in a client id. I got something similiar to work (only it was updating just a label) - but this will not work. What happens is the partial is just rendered by itself (not in place of the UpdateTargetID). So the data is rendered on a new page. • Attempting to update multiple partial views from a single Ajax.ActionLink

  I have a a partial view which contains other partial views. I am trying to the main partial view ( "MainPartialView" ) from an Ajax.ActionLink in a partial view contained by the main partial view ( "DetailsView" ). Everything appears to be called just fine and I can step through and it executes all of the code on the pages. • ASP.NET MVC Html.ValidationSummary(true) does not display model errors

  I have some problem with Html.ValidationSummary. I don't want to display property errors in ValidationSummary. And when I set Html.ValidationSummary(true) it does not display error messages from ModelState. When there is some Exception in controller action on string MembersManager.RegisterMember(member); catch section adds an error to the ModelState: ModelState.AddModelError("error", ex.Message); But ValidationSummary does not display this error message. When I set Html.ValidationSummary(false) all messages are displaying, but I don't want to display property errors. How can I fix this problem? • Ajax comments form in ASP.NET MVC2

  I've been playing around with different aspects of MVC for some time now, and I've reached a situation where I'm not sure what would be the best way to solve a problem. I'm hoping that the SO community will help me out here :P I've seen a number of examples of Ajax.BeginForm on the internet, and it seems like a very nifty idea. E.g. you have a dropdown where you select a customer - and on selecting one it will load this client's details in some placeholder on the page. This works perfectly fine. But what to do if you want to tie in some validation in the box? Just hypothetically, imagine an article page, and user comments in the bottom. Below the comments area there's an ajax-y "Add comment" box. When a user adds a comment, it will appear in the comments area, below the last comment there. If I set the Ajax.BeginForm to Append the result of the call to the Comments area, it will work fine. But what if the data posted is not valid? Instead of appending a "successful" comment to the comments area I have to show the user validation errors. At this point I decided that the area INSIDE the Ajax.BeginForm will be inside a partial, and the form's submits will return this partial. Validation works fine. On each submit we reload the contents inside the form element. But how to add the successful comment to the top? Other things to consider: The comment form also has a "Preview" button. When the user clicks on Preview, I should load the rendered comment into a preview box. This will probably be inside the form area as well. I was thinking of using Json results instead. When the user submits the form, the server code will generate a Json object with a Success value, and html rendered partials as some properties. Something like { "success": true, "form": "<html form data>", "comment": "successful comment html to inject into the page" } This would be a perfect solution, except there's no way in MVC to render a partial into a string, inside the controller (separation of context, remember?). So.. what should I do then? Any "correct" way to implement this?

• Attempting to update partial view using Ajax.ActionLink gives error in MicrosoftAjax.js

  I am trying to update the partial view ( "OnlyPartialView" ) from an Ajax.ActionLink which is in the same partial view. While executing the foreach loop it throws this error in a popup box in visual studio: htmlfile: Unknown runtime error This error puts the break point in the MicrosoftAjax.js file, Line 5, Col 83,632, Ch 83632. The page is not updated appropriately. Any thoughts or ideas on how I could troubleshoot this? It was previously nested partial views, I've simplified it for this example but this code produces the same error. Is there a better way to do what I am trying to do? • iPad application crash in Apple review - cannot replicate in simulator, have crash log

• Switching DataSources on a ReportViewer in WinForms

  I have created a winform for the users to view view the many reports I am creating for them. I have a drop down list with the report name which triggers the appropriate fields to display the parameters. Once those are filled, they press Submit and the report appears. This works the first time they hit the screen. They can change the parameters and the ReportViewer works fine. Change to a different report, and the I get the following ReportViewer error: An error occurred during local report processing. An error has occurred during the report processing. A data source instance has not been supplied for the data source "CgTempData_BusMaintenance". As far as the process I use: I set reportName (string) the physical RDLC name. I set the dataSource (string) as the DataSource Name I fill a generic DataTable with the data for the report to run from. Make the ReportViewer visible Set the LocalReport.ReportPath = "Reports\\" = reportName; Clear the LocalReport.DataSources.Clear() Add the new LocalReport.DataSources.Add(new ReportDataSource(dataSource, dt)); RefreshReport() on the ReportViewer. • Run MySQL INSERT Query multiple times (insert values into multiple tables)

  Hi, basically, I have 3 tables; users and projects (which is a many-to-many relationship), then I have 'usersprojects' to allow the one-to-many formation. When a user adds a project, I need the project information stored and then the 'userid' and 'projectid' stored in the usersprojects table. It sounds like its really straight forward but I'm having problems with the syntax I think!? As it stands, I have this as my INSERT queries (values going into 2 different tables): $project_id = $_POST['project_id']; $projectname = $_POST['projectname']; $projectdeadline = $_POST['projectdeadline']; $projectdetails = $_POST['projectdetails']; $user_id = $_POST['user_id']; $sql = "INSERT INTO projects (projectid, projectname, projectdeadline, projectdetails) VALUES ('{$projectid}','{$projectname}','{$projectdeadline}','{$projectdetails}')"; $sql = "INSERT INTO usersprojects (userid, projectid) VALUES ('{$userid}','{$projectid}')"; None of the information is being stored in the projects table, but the user ID is being stored in the usersprojects table (but not project ID!?)... I did have it working where the project information is stored correctly with a project ID, before I added this bit: $sql = "INSERT INTO usersprojects (userid, projectid) VALUES ('{$userid}','{$projectid}')"; But before the code above was put in, obviously no info is being stored in usersprojects table.   Hi, I am receiving the above message when making a request to a java webservice. We originally created a Java Console application and manually submitted an xml file. When running this as a Java Application the response is successfully created and displayed by using System.out.println. We are creating the web service by selecting the java file that contains the methods and choosing "create webservice" specifying the dynamic project that the webservice is to be created in and the methods to be exposed. The build path for this includes the following contents of sun\jwsdp-2.0\jaxb\lib: jaxb-api.jar jsr173_1.0_api.jar jaxb-impl.jar I have added these to the lib folder in the WEB-INF file of the dynamic project. I am running the webservice in JBuilder 2008 R2 and using SOAPUI to submit the request - this points to the wsdl generated when creating the webservice. • Crawling engine architecture - Java/ Perl integration

  Hi all, I am looking to develop a management and administration solution around our webcrawling perl scripts. Basically, right now our scripts are saved in SVN and are manually kicked off by SysAdmin/devs etc. Everytime we need to retrieve data from new sources we have to create a ticket with business instructions and goals. As you can imagine, not an optimal solution. There are 3 consistent themes with this system: the retrieval of data has a "conceptual structure" for lack of a better phrase i.e. the retrieval of information follows a particular path we are only looking for very specific information so we dont have to really worry about extensive crawling for awhile (think thousands-tens of thousands of pages vs millions) crawls are url-based instead of site-based. As I enhance this alpha version to a more production-level beta I am looking to add automation and management of the retrieval of data. Additionally our other systems are Java (which I'm more proficient in) and I'd like to compartmentalize the perl aspects so we dont have to lean heavily on outside help. I've evaluated the usual suspects Nutch, Droid etc but the time spent on modifying those frameworks to suit our specific information retrieval cant be justified. So I'd like your thoughts regarding the following architecture. I want to create a solution which use Java as the interface for managing and execution of the perl scripts use Java for configuration and data access stick with perl for retrieval An example use case would be a data analyst delivers us a requirement for crawling perl developer creates the required script and uses this webapp to submit the script (which gets saved to the filesystem) the script gets kicked off from the webapp with specific parameters .... Webapp should be able to create multiple threads of the perl script to initiate multiple crawlers. So questions are what do you think how solid is integration between Java and Perl specifically from calling perl from java has someone used such a system which actually is part perl repository The goal really is to not have a whole bunch of unorganized perl scripts and put some management and organization on our information retrieval. Also, I know I can use perl do do the web part of what we want - but as I mentioned before - trying to keep perl focused. But it seems assbackwards I'm not adverse to making it an all perl solution.
