• Keeping an Eye on Your Storage

  There are plenty of resources that advise you about looking for signs that your storage hardware is having problems. SQL Server Alerts for 823, 824 and 825 are covered here by Paul Randall of SQL Skills: http://www.sqlskills.com/blogs/paul/a-little-known-sign-of-impending-doom-error-825/ and here by me: https://www.simple-talk.com/blogs/2011/06/27/alerts-are-good-arent-they/. Now until very recently I wasn’t aware that there was a different way to track the 823 + 824 errors. It was by complete chance that I happened to be searching about in the msdb database when I found the suspect_pages table. Running a query against it I got zero rows. This, as it turns out is a good thing. Highlighting the table name and pressing F1 got me nowhere – Is it just me or does Books Online fail to load properly for no obvious reason sometimes? So I typed the table name into the search bar and got my local version of http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms174425.aspx. From that we get the following description: Contains one row per page that failed with a minor 823 error or an 824 error. Pages are listed in this table because they are suspected of being bad, but they might actually be fine. When a suspect page is repaired, its status is updated in the event_type column. So, in the table we would, on healthy hardware, expect to see zero rows but on disks that are having problems the event_type column would show us what is going on. Where there are suspect pages on the disk the rows would have an event_type value of 1, 2 or 3, where those suspect pages have been restored, repaired or deallocated by DBCC then the value would be 4, 5 or 7. Having this table means that we can set up SQL Monitor to check the status of our hardware as we can create a custom metric based on the query below: USE [msdb] go SELECT COUNT(*) FROM [dbo].[suspect_pages] AS sp All we need to do is set the metric to collect this value and set an alert to email when the value is not 1 and we are then able to let SQL Monitor take care of our storage. Note that the suspect_pages table does not have any updates concerning Error 825 which the links at the top of the page cover in more detail. I would suggest that you set SQL Monitor to alert on the suspect_pages table in addition to other taking other measures to look after your storage hardware and not have it as your only precaution. Microsoft actually pass ownership and administration of the suspect_pages table over to the database administrator (Manage the suspect_pages Table (SQL Server)) and in a surprising move (to me at least) advise DBAs to actively update and archive data in it. The table will only ever contain a maximum of 1000 rows and once full, new rows will not be added. Keeping an eye on this table is pretty important, although In my opinion, if you get to 1000 rows in this table and are not already waiting for new disks to be added to your server you are doing something wrong but if you have 1000 rows in there then you need to move data out quickly because you may be missing some important events on your server.

• database design help for game / user levels / progress

  Sorry this got long and all prose-y. I'm creating my first truly gamified web app and could use some help thinking about how to structure the data. The Set-up Users need to accomplish tasks in each of several categories before they can move up a level. I've got my Users, Tasks, and Categories tables, and a UserTasks table which joins the three. ("User 3 has added Task 42 in Category 8. Now they've completed it.") That's all fine and working wonderfully. The Challenge I'm not sure of the best way to track the progress in the individual categories toward each level. The "business" rules are: You have to achieve a certain number of points in each category to move up. If you get the number of points needed in Cat 8, but still have other work to do to complete the level, any new Cat 8 points count toward your overall score, but don't "roll over" into the next level. The number of Categories is small (five currently) and unlikely to change often, but by no means absolutely fixed. The number of points needed to level-up will vary per level, probably by a formula, or perhaps a lookup table. So the challenge is to track each user's progress toward the next level in each category. I've thought of a few potential approaches: Possible Solutions Add a column to the users table for each category and reset them all to zero each time a user levels-up. Have a separate UserProgress table with a row for each category for each user and the number of points they have. (Basically a Many-to-Many version of #1.) Add a userLevel column to the UserTasks table and use that to derive their progress with some kind of SUM statement. Their current level will be a simple int in the User table. Pros & Cons (1) seems like by far the most straightforward, but it's also the least flexible. Perhaps I could use a naming convention based on the category ids to help overcome some of that. (With code like "select cats; for each cat, get the value from Users.progress_{cat.id}.") It's also the one where I lose the most data -- I won't know which points counted toward leveling up. I don't have a need in mind for that, so maybe I don't care about that. (2) seems complicated: every time I add or subtract a user or a category, I have to maintain the other table. I foresee synchronization challenges. (3) Is somewhere in between -- cleaner than #2, but less intuitive than #1. In order to find out where a user is, I'd have mildly complex SQL like: SELECT categoryId, SUM(points) from UserTasks WHERE userId={user.id} & countsTowardLevel={user.level} groupBy categoryId Hmm... that doesn't seem so bad. I think I'm talking myself into #3 here, but would love any input, advice or other ideas. P.S. Sorry for the cross-post. I wrote this up on SO and then remembered that there was a game dev-focused one. Curious to see if I get different answers one place than the other....

• glm matrix conversion for DirectX

  For on of the coursework specification I need to work with DirectX, so I tried to implement a DirectX Renderer in my small cross-platform framework (to have it optionally available for Windows). Since I want to stick to my dependencies I want use glm for vector/matrix/quaternions math. The vectors seem to be fully compatible with DirectX, but the glm::mat4 is not working properly in DirectX Effects Framework. I assumed the reason is that DirectX uses row majors layouts and OpenGL column majors (although if I remember right internally in HLSL DX uses column major as well), so I transposed the matrix, but I still get no proper results compared to using XNA-Math. XNA-Version of the code (works): XMMATRIX world = XMMatrixIdentity(); XMMATRIX view = XMMatrixLookAtLH(XMVectorSet(5.0, 5.0, 5.0, 1.0f), XMVectorZero(), XMVectorSet(0.0f, 1.0f, 0.0f, 0.0f)); XMMATRIX proj = XMMatrixPerspectiveFovLH(0.25f*3.14f, 1.25f, 1.0f, 1000.0f); XMMATRIX worldViewProj = world*view*proj; m_fxWorldViewProj->SetMatrix(reinterpret_cast<float*>(&worldViewProj)); This works flawlessly and displays the expected colored cube. GLM-Version (does not work): glm::mat4 world(1.0f); glm::mat4 view = glm::lookAt(glm::vec3(5.0f, 5.0f, 5.0f), glm::vec3(0.0f, 0.0f, 0.0f), glm::vec3(0.0f, 1.0f, 0.0f)); glm::mat4 proj = glm::perspective(0.25f*3.14f, 1.25f, 1.0f, 1000.0f); glm::mat4 worldViewProj = glm::transpose(world*view*proj); m_fxWorldViewProj->SetMatrix(glm::value_ptr(worldViewProj)); Displays nothing, screen stays black. I really would like to stick to glm on all platforms.

• Could not determine metatable error binding list to asp.net datagridview

  I am working with the following block of code ... List<ThemeObject> themeList = (from theme in database.Themes join image in database.DBImages on theme.imageID equals image.imageID into resultSet from item in resultSet select new ThemeObject { Name = theme.Name, ImageID = item.imageID}).ToList(); dgvGridView.DataSource = themeList; dgvGridView.DataBind(); The list object populates fine. The datagrid is setup with 2 columns. A textbox column for the "Name" which is bound to "Name" An image column which is bound to the "ImageID" field When I execute the code I receive the following error on the DataBind() Could not determine a MetaTable. A MetaTable could not be determined for the data source '' and one could not be inferred from the request URL. Make sure that the table is mapped to the dats source, or that the data source is configured with a valid context type and table name, or that the request is part of a registered DynamicDataRoute. I'm not using any dynamicdataroutes as far as I can tell. Has anyone experienced this error before?

I checked with Debuger conveter works properly. I can't undesrtand why it doesn't work. Any ideas?

  MSSQL 2008. I am trying to construct a SQL statement which returns the total of column B for all rows where column A is between 2 known ranges. The range is a sliding window, and should be recomputed as it might be using a loop. Here is an example of what I'm trying to do, much simplified from my actual problem. The DecadeEnd is a sliding window that moves forward by a set ammount for each row in the result set. I use implicit styles in Silverlight 4, and the custom tabcontrol should not have any xaml of its own, just the class and the implicit xaml style in my App.xaml. I cannot, however, get this to work. • JavaFX Datagrid

  Hi All. Im in the verge of starting a new RIA development. We've been using Flex/Flash for the last 2 years but we were considering using a more OS approach so we though giving JavaFX a try since it seams the only solid option available. However after a couple of days of research we found out that there is not such thing as a datagrid for it, at least not in the core API. For those unfamiliar with Flex, a Datagrid is a component that allows you to display a collection of data in column-row layout (much like a HTML Table on steroids). The beauty of it is that you only need to worry about the data itself as the component does pretty much the rest (sorting, column dragging, etc). Im afraid to ask... but is there something slightly similar for JavaFX? We require nothing as fancy as Flex Datagrids/AdvancedDatagrids, we only require a easy, straight forward way to display grids of data that are able to have a little of interaction like clicking, sorting and that are able to display images, buttons, etc. without having to download a ton of different jars. If there isn´t something out there... This would be a shot in the back of the head to the idea of giving javaFx the chance to compete with flash on our project (which is sad). I really cant believe the SUN people didnt include something like this on the core API...

• How can I sort a DataGridTemplateColumn on a WPF Toolkit DataGrid?

  I have a WPF Toolkit DataGrid with one DataGridTemplateColumn. I've specified in a grid attribute that I wish all columns to be sortable, but the DataGridTemplateColumn won't allow it. All other columns do allow sorting. I've even tried explicitly setting CanUserSort to true for that column, but no luck. Is it even possible to sort a template column? • Subsonic : Can’t decide which property to consider the Key? foreign key issue.

  Hi I am trying to select count of rows from a table which has foreign keys of two tables. The C# code threw the error mentioned below. So, I added a primary key column to the table (schema as follows) and regenerated the code. But still the same error is coming. • Vaadin table hide columns and container customization

  Hello I am testing a project, using Vaadin and Hibernate. I am trying to use the HbnContainer class to show data into table. The problem is that I do not want to show all the properties of the two classes in the table. For example: @Entity @Table(name="users") class User { @Id @GeneratedValue(strategy=GenerationType.AUTO) private Long id; private String name; @ManyToOne(cascade=CascadeType.PERSIST) private UserRole role; //getters and setters } and a second class: @Entity @Table(name="user_roles") class UserRole { @Id @GeneratedValue(strategy=GenerationType.AUTO) private Long id; private String name; //getters and setters } Next, I retrieve my data using the HbnContainer, and connect it to the table: HbnContainer container = new HbnContainer(User.class, app); table.setContainerDataSource(container); The Table will only display the columns from User, and for the "role" it will put the role id instead. How can I hide that column, and replace it with the UserRole.name ? I managed to use a ColumnGenerator() to get the string value in the table, for the UserRole - but I couldn't remove the previous column, with the numerical value. What am I missing? Or, what is the best way to "customize" your data, before displaying a table (if i want to show data in a table from more than one object type.. what do I do?) If I can't find a simple solution soon, I think I will just build the tables "by hand".. So, any advice on this matter? Thank you, Alex

• <rich:datatable> and <rich:datascroller> problem

  Hi all, I am developing a Seam-Jsfv1.2-EJB3 web app. I have a datatable and checkboxes in each row. Moreover, I have a datascroller at the bottom of my table as well. My problem is when I click the next page number from the scroller, the selected checkboxes at the first page of the datatable is gone. I mean, even if they were selected, clicking the next page make them deselected. I see it by going back to the first page again by clicking the scroller. Do you have any idea about that problem? • Xceed DataGrid SelectedItem issue

  In my project I have an Xceed data grid which is bound to a data source with many records and record details. I am attempting to create a context menu option that will allow the user to search for a specific detail in a specific column. While I have successfully completed the functionality there is a UI part that is giving me some trouble, in that when I select the row in C#, if that row is not in view the row is never focused on. Thus the user has to scroll up and down looking for the row with expanded details. I am able to set the SelectedRow and expand the details like so: this.grid.AutoFilterValues[userColumn].Clear(); this.grid.AutoFilterValues[userColumn].Add(userValue); if (this.creditLinesDataGridControl.Items.Count > 0) { this.grid.SelectedItem = this.grid.Items[0]; this.grid.ExpandDetails(this.grid.Items[0]); } else { MessageBox.Show("Value not found in column: " + userColumn); } this.grid.AutoFilterValues[userColumn].Clear(); where userColumn and userValue are set previously in the method. • Getting types of the attributes in an ActiveRecord object

  I would like to know if it is possible to get the types (as known by AR - eg in the migration script and database) programmatically (I know the data exists in there somewhere). For example, I can deal with all the attribute names: ar.attribute_names.each { |name| puts name } .attributes just returns a mapping of the names to their current values (eg no type info if the field isn't set). Some places I have seen it with the type information: in script/console, type the name of an AR entity: >> Driver => Driver(id: integer, name: string, created_at: datetime, updated_at: datetime) So clearly it knows the types. Also, there is .column_for_attribute, which takes an attr name and returns a column object - which has the type buried in the underlying database column object, but it doesn't appear to be a clean way to get it. I would also be interested in if there is a way that is friendly for the new "ActiveModel" that is coming (rails3) and is decoupled from database specifics (but perhaps type info will not be part of it, I can't seem to find out if it is). • Synchronize the position of two ScrollView views

  I am trying to synchronize the positions of two ScrollViews. I'm trying to do this to display a tv guide listing. I have created a custom class that extends RelativeLayout to display the guide. This relative layout has four children: an imageview in the top left corner, a HorizontalScrollView to display the column headers in the top right, a ScrollView to display the row headers at the bottom left, and a ScrollView in the bottom right that contains the listings. This ScrollView then contains a HorizontalScrollView, which in turn contains a LinearLayout with multiple child views that display the data. I hope this explains it clearly, but here's a diagram to make it clearer: ____________ |__|___hsv___| | | | | | sv -> | | | hsv -> | |sv| ll -> | | | etc | | | | |__|_________| I set it up like this because I wanted the guide listings to scroll both horizontally and vertically, but there's no scroll view that does this. Also, I want the row and column headers to display no matter what position the guide listings are at, but I want them to be lined up properly. So I'm trying to find a way to synchronize the positions of the two hsv's, and to also synchronize the positions of the two sv's. I'm also trying to do it in a way that avoids just running a handler every few milliseconds to poll one view and call scrollTo on the other. I'm in no way sure that this is the best way to do it, but this is what I've come up with. If anybody has any other suggestions, please feel free!

• Unicode Collations problem ?

  (.NET 3.5 SP1, VS 2008, VB.NET, MSSQL Server 2008) I'm writing a small web app to test the Khmer Unicode and Lao Unicode. I have a table that store text in Khmer Unicode with the following structure : [t_id] [int] IDENTITY(1,1) NOT NULL [t_chid] [int] NOT NULL [t_vn] [int] NOT NULL [t_v] [nvarchar](max) NOT NULL I can use Linq to SQL to do CRUD normally. The text display properly on the web page, even though I didn't change the default collation of MSSQL Server 2008. When it comes to search the column [t_v], the page will take a very long time to load and in fact, it loads every row of that column. It never compares with the "key word" criteria that I use for the search. • CSS positioning is weird when reducing the viewport

  I have a little meditation for you ... I run a site using a liquid tri-col layout with a header. The layout runs nicely since more than a decade with all browsers I ever dared to try. It is based on absolute positioning in CSS. This page provides an example of the actual site. Watching the page from my tablet I found that the right column overlaps the center matter. Further investigation using Firebug showed that once the center content reaches 360px width, the right margin of the div shrinks. Why is that? Since Firefox and Android render the same, I guess that this is something, which is actually supposed to be. However, I tried to make virtue out of necessity and experimented setting min-width for body and content and made the body scroll overflow. The body actually scrolls, but the right column is positioned on the right edge of the viewport instead of the body element (Firefox). Is this intentional CSS standard? Any ideas how to solve the presentation on small displays? Thanks for your efforts,  – lars.

  The scenario is as follows, I have 3 objects (i simplified the names) named Parent, parent's child & child's child parent's child is a set in parent, and child's child is a set in child. mapping is as follows (relevant parts) parent <set name="parentset" table="pc-table" lazy="false" fetch="subselect" cascade="all-delete-orphan" inverse="true"> <key column=FK_ID_PC" on-delete="cascade"/> <one-to-many class="parentchild,parentchild-ns"/> </set> parent's child <set name="childset" table="cc-table" lazy="false" fetch="subselect" cascade="all-delete-orphan" inverse="true"> <key column="FK_ID_CC" on-delete="cascade"/> <one-to-many class="childschild,childschild-ns"/> </set> What i want to achieve is that when i delete the parent, there would be a cascade delete all the way trough to child's child. But what currently happens is this. (this is purely for mapping test purposes) getting a parent entity (works fine) IQuery query = session.CreateQuery("from Parent where ID =" + ID); IParent doc = query.UniqueResult<Parent>(); now the delete part session.Delete(doc); transaction.Commit(); After having solved the 'cannot insert null value' error with cascading and inverse i hopes this would now delete everything with this code, but only the parent is being deleted. Did i miss something in my mapping which is likely to be missed? Any hint in the right direction is more than welcome!

  I am new to nHibernate and having some issues getting over the learning curve. My current question involves passing a string value as a parameter to a stored sproc. The error I get is: Input string is not in correct format. • mysql query to dynamically convert row data to columns

  I am working on a pivot table query. The schema is as follows Sno, Name, District The same name may appear in many districts eg take the sample data for example 1 Mike CA 2 Mike CA 3 Proctor JB 4 Luke MN 5 Luke MN 6 Mike CA 7 Mike LP 8 Proctor MN 9 Proctor JB 10 Proctor MN 11 Luke MN As you see i have a set of 4 distinct districts (CA, JB, MN, LP). Now i wanted to get the pivot table generated for it by mapping the name against districts Name CA JB MN LP Mike 3 0 0 1 Proctor 0 2 2 0 Luke 0 0 3 0 i wrote the following query for this select name,sum(if(District="CA",1,0)) as "CA",sum(if(District="JB",1,0)) as "JB",sum(if(District="MN",1,0)) as "MN",sum(if(District="LP",1,0)) as "LP" from district_details group by name However there is a possibility that the districts may increase, in that case i will have to manually edit the query again and add the new district to it. I want to know if there is a query which can dynamically take the names of distinct districts and run the above query. I know i can do it with a procedure and generating the script on the fly, is there any other method too? I ask so because the output of the query "select distinct(districts) from district_details" will return me a single column having district name on each row, which i will like to be transposed to the column.
