  I ran a very basic query against one of our table and I noticed that the execution plan query processor is recommending that we create an index on a column The query is SELECT SUM(DATALENGTH(Data)) FROM Item WHERE Namespace = 'http://some_url/some_namespace/' After running, I get the following message // The Query Processor estimates that implementing the following index could improve the query cost by 96.7211%. • Best way to handle SQL Server fulltext index updates

  Hi all, I have a fulltext index which doesn't need to be immediately up-to-date, I'd like to spare myself the I/O (when I do bulk updates, I see a ton of I/O related to the index) and do the index updates during low usage times (nightly, perhaps even weekly). It seems there are two ways to go about this: Turn off change tracking (SET CHANGE_TRACKING OFF) and add a timestamp field to the indexed table, so that you can run alter fulltext index on <table> start INCREMENTAL population, or Enable change tracking, but set it to MANUAL, so that you can run alter fulltext index on <table> start UPDATE population when you need it updated. Is there a preferred method? I couldn't tell from this overview if there was a performance benefit one way or the other. Tom

  Hello guys, I am trying to do the following. Imagine you are reading some LINQ article and you decide to copy/paste some code from the article to a newly created project. In most cases, if you directly compile you will probably get an error for missing a using directives or assembly reference. I am trying to optimize the process where I have to go each keyword, click on it with the mouse and hit Shift + Alt + F10 to add the using directive. • Are there any small scale, durable document/object databases?

  I have a few .Net projects that would benefit from using a document/object database opposed to a relational one. I think that db4o would be a good choice, but we're not sure how much the cost is. I'd love to use MongoDB but it's design isn't for small scale, single server applications. Are there other options out there that I just haven't run across for small scale applications? EDIT: So is this a space that doesn't have a good solution, yet? Are there no small scale & durable document databases? Would my best choice be to use MongoDB and set the --syncdelay option set to 1?

• How do you find out release, mailing list statistics information on open source projects

  We are interested in finding out some statistics of various frameworks Mailing list activity on say richfaces. Much similar to what is available on http://code.google.com (Low, Medium, High) + average number of emails per day | per month. Number of releases made in a year including patch, minor, major releases. We did look at the maven repositories but that wasn't very useful either. We did look at ohloh, but didn't get the desired information. Any other ideas on where to get this information (any maven-2 plugins)?

• Possible apache/mysql/php wrapper?

  I was tasked with writing a smallish program for data input and manipulation. My language of choice happens to be PHP. I have written out the program/site it all works fine is easily portable and everything but have one question. Is there anyway to wrap up apache/mysql/php into a bundle of one exe? I know of MoWes Portable and other options but I am looking to basically wrap everything up into a single exe without much fuss to the end user. My target users are very low on the computer savvy scale. I am trying to avoid a batch file for launching and don't really want them able to shutdown one part on accident and not another (IE shut off mysql but leave apache on).

I have executed the batch in SSMS with “Include Actual execution plan “ and having Profiler running. The plan shows that the first query cost is 88% relative to the batch and the second is 12%, but the profiler says that durations of the first and second query are 17ms and 210 ms respectively, the overall time is 229, which is not 12 and 88.. What is going on? Is there a way how I can determine in the execution plan which is the slowest part of the query?

  Good Morning, I have a radiobuttonlist in my ASP.NET webforms application that is used as a voting tool. The concept is as follows: Users will vote for the blurb in the contentplaceholder using the radiobuttonlist. My list item values are 1 through 3 and my list item text is something like low, medium and high. Questions: 1. I want to save and accumulate votes for a given blurb. The blurb ID is referenced in a meta tag on the content page. How do I reference the meta tag in my SQL insert statement? 2. When the radiobuttonlist is used, can it cause the next content page to be loaded after the SQL insert is done? That is, I don't necessarily want the user to make the radiobuttonlist selection, then have to click a separate button to cast vote and move to next page. I want all that done in the radiobuttonlist. • How to find good looking font color if background color is known?

  There seem to be so many color wheel, color picker, and color matcher web apps out there, where you give one color and the they'll find a couple of other colors that will create a harmonic layout when being used in combination. However most of them focus on background colors only and any text printed on each background color (if text is printed at all in the preview) is either black or white. My problem is different. I know the background color I want to use for a text area. What I need help with is choosing a couple of colors (the more, the merrier) I can use as font colors on this background. Most important is that the color will make sure the font is readable (contrast not being too low, also maybe not being too high to avoid that eyes are stressed) and of course that the combination of foreground and background just looks good. Anyone being aware of such an application? I'd prefer a web application to anything I have to download. Thanks.

  I have been asked to quote an hourly rate for freelance programming for a Rails project. Although it would be my first paid project on Rails, I know the technology well from personal projects and have a decade of professional programming experience. This would be my first freelance project ever, so I have no idea how to find out what the going rate for my services should be. Obviously, if I quote a rate that is too high, they may choose someone else - too low and I may feel cheated later on. Any suggestions? Update: I am in NYC and the project is scheduled for 6 months to a year (but this seems unrealistic - I think it will be a multi-year project). I would develop on site (at a corporate location) with one other developer and the project would consist of about 200 custom-built pages initially. 10 hour days with weekends and additional overtime as required. The customer has given no information about how much they will pay - "a competitive rate" - they want me to start the discussion.

  In multithreaded .NET programming, what are the decision criteria for using ThreadPool.QueueUserWorkItem versus starting my own thread via new Thread() and Thread.Start()? In a server app (let's say, an ASP.NET app or a WCF service) I think the ThreadPool is always there and available. What about in a client app, like a WinForms or WPF app? Is there a cost to spin up the thread pool? If I just want 3 or 4 threads to work for a short period on some computation, is it better to QUWI or to Thread.Start().

• Authentication for SaaS

  What would be recommended as an authentication solution for a Software-as-a-service product? Specifically, my product would have clients that would typically have low information technology skills, potentially not even having an IT department within their organization. I would still like to have my application authenticate against their internal directory service (eDirectory, Active Directory, etc.). I don't want them, however, to have to open/forward ports (for instance, opening up port 636 so I can do LDAPS binds directly to their directory service). One idea I had was to have an application installed on a server within their organization's network that would backconnect to my service. This would be a persistant socket. When I need to authenticate a user, I send the credentials via the socket (encrypted) - the application then performs a bind/whatever to authenticate against the directory service and replies with OK/FAIL. What would you suggest? My goal here is to essentially have the client install an application within their network, with very little configuration or intervention.

I'm most experienced with C#/ASP.net, PHP and Java, in that order, but don't turn down other languages (Ruby, Python, Scala, etc.). How can we determine from the jungle of frameworks the one that suits best our goal? What other questions should we be asking ourselves?   Hey all- I'm doing some performance-critical Python work and want to create a function that removes a few elements from a list if they meet certain criteria. I'd rather not create any copies of the list because it's filled with a lot of really large objects. Functionality I want to implement: def listCleanup(listOfElements): i = 0 for element in listOfElements: if(element.meetsCriteria()): del(listOfElements[i]) i += 1 return listOfElements myList = range(10000) myList = listCleanup(listOfElements) I'm not familiar with the low-level workings of Python. Is myList being passed by value or by reference? How can I make this faster?   Dear All, I am creating a simple game, where I would like more than one player to be able to connect and play. With regards to a single player game, I am more than comfortable with the coding. I cannot seem to figure out how to connect up more than one player and update their screens when the each player moves. So far I have the players connecting, but I still need to be able update the SharedObject when a player moves, then push it out to the other players. I have searched high and low for a good tutorial / source code to review. Code So Far A tutorial i found so far listened for a click as it was a mouse based movement, then this told the SHaredObject to tell the client (and the others) to update that clients movement. However all of my movement is listend and acted on in the playership class.

• WPF ItemsControl - how to know when the items finished loading, so that I can focus the first one?

  Hi everyone, I have an ItemsControl in my View, that is bound to an ObservableCollection from ViewModel. The collection is filled, and afterwards an event from VM to view is raised (think search results and SearchFinished event). I would like to move keyboard focus to the first item in an ItemsControl, but when I do it in View's code-behind when handling SearchFinished, the items are not yet rendered (the collection is filled already, but wpf's rendering is asynchronous and didn't happen yet), so there is nothing to focus (Focus() needs to have the items' visual tree already constructed). I wanted to do (myItemsControl.ItemContainerGenerator.ContainerFromIndex(0) as UIElement).Focus();, but as the 0th item is not yet loaded, ContainerFromIndex(0) returns null. I tried delaying it with Dispatcher.BeginInvoke... with low priority, but that is dependent on exact timing and usually doesn't work. How can I wait until the first item in ItemsControl is Loaded?

• Automatically deleting pyc files when corresponding py is moved (Mercurial)

  (I foresaw this problem might happen 3 months ago, and was told to be diligent to avoid it. Yesterday, I was bitten by it, hard, and now that it has cost me real money, I am keen to fix it.) If I move one of my Python source files into another directory, I need to remember to tell Mercurial that it moved (hg move). When I deploy the new software to my server with Mercurial, it carefully deletes the old Python file and creates it in the new directory. However, Mercurial is unaware of the pyc file in the same directory, and leaves it behind. The old pyc is used preferentially over new python file by other modules in the same directory. What ensues is NOT hilarity. How can I persuade Mercurial to automatically delete my old pyc file when I move the python file? Is there another better practice? Trying to remember to delete the pyc file from all the Mercurial repositories isn't working.

Why would companies spend more on North American/local developers where they can get the same quality if not better job done offshore ? I am just concerned for the development labor market, the free market wants the lowest cost provider. not just programming but many high skilled labor such as engineering, scientists, artists and etc. perhaps i should become a lawyer ?

• Grabbing random object from ArrayList is not random.

  I am creating a method where if you pass in a parameter of type Random, then it will return a random object. Here is basically what I am trying to do: public T choose(Random r) { int randomInt = r.nextInt(randomList.size()); // randomList is just a instance variable return randomList.get(randomInt); } The random list has this the following strings:[2, 2, 2, 1, 1, 1, 1, c, c, c, a, a, a, a] Then I made a driver with the following code for (int i = 0; i < 10; i++) { System.out.print(rndList.choose(rnd)); // rnd is initialized as a static Random variable } However my outputs are not coming out random. I used the debugger and found out that my choose method generates an integer that is relatively low, so it will always print out either 2's or 1's but never c's or a's. I can't figure out why this is happening and help would be greatly appreciated.

• Minimalistic PHP template engine with caching but not Smarty?

  There are loads of questions for "the right" PHP template engine, but none of them is focused on caching. Does anybody know a lightweight, high-quality, PHP 5 based template engine that does the following out of the box: Low-level templating functions (Replacements, loops, and filtering, maybe conditionals) Caching of the parsed results with the possibility to set an individual TTL per item, and of course to force a reload programmatically Extremely easy usage (like Smarty's) Modest in polluting the namespace (the ideal solution would be one class to interact with from the outside application) But not Smarty. I have nothing against, and often use, Smarty, but I am looking for something a bit simpler and leaner. I took a look at Fabien Potencier's Twig that looks very nice and compiles templates into PHP code, but it doesn't do any actual caching beyond that. I need and want a template engine, as I need to completely separate code and presentation in a way that a HTML designer can understand later on, so please no fundamental discussions about whether template engines in PHP make sense. Those discussions are important, but they already exist on SO.

• Would watching a file for changes or redundantly querying that file be more efficient?

  I am wondering whether watching a file/directory for changes using the FileSystemWatcher class is extremely memory intensive. I am developing a desktop application in C# that will be running behind the scenes continuously on low-performance computers, and I need some way of checking to see if various files have changed. I can think of a few solutions: Watch the directories using FileSystemWatcher. Run a timed thread on an interval that goes through and manually checks this. Check manually every time the actionhandler thread runs (the program will occasionally do something, on an action). Any suggestions? Thanks! badPanda
