• How do I calculate the offset, in hours, of a given timezone from UTC in ruby?

  I need to calculate the offset, in hours, of a given timezone from UTC in Ruby. This line of code had been working for me, or so I thought: offset_in_hours = (TZInfo::Timezone.get(self.timezone).current_period.offset.utc_offset).to_f / 3600.0 But, it turns out that was returning to me the Standard Offset, not the DST offset. So for example, assume self.timezone = "America/New_York" If I run the above line, offset_in_hours = -5, not -4 as it should, given that the date today is April 1, 2012. Can anyone advise me how to calculate offset_in_hours from UTC given a valid string TimeZone in Ruby that accounts for both standard time and daylight savings? Thanks!

  I'm trying to make a form that handles the checking of a domain: the form should fail based on a variable that was set earlier in another form. Basically, when a user wants to create a new domain, this form should fail if the entered domain exists. When a user wants to move a domain, this form should fail if the entered domain doesn't exist. I've tried making it dynamic overload the initbut couldn't see a way to get my passed variabele to the clean function. I've read that this dynamic validation can be accomplished using a factory method, but maybe someone can help me on my way with this? • How to handle date difference between client and server?

  I have an API which looks like /summary/yyyy/mm Which returns the summary of their data for the year and month requested. One of the things it returns the number of days left if this is current year and month. For example: days_left: 9 for 2013 and 10 and current date on server is 21 Oct 2013 How I calculate remaining days? This is implemented in python as def current_financial_month_details(self): time_from, time_to = self \ .get_start_end_time_current_financial_month() today = datetime.today() from_time = datetime(year=today.year, month=today.month, day=today.day) return { 'time_from': time_from, 'time_to': time_to, 'remaining_days': (time_to - from_time).days } The problem? The server is in east coast and the client(me with browser) is on pacific time zone When its 9PM PST the time changes in east coast, so if I run hit /summary/2013/10 and if it is Oct 21 2013 for me on PST, the date has already changed on EST, so days_left: 8 which is incorrect on client end. right? How do I handle this situation?

• Can I use string concatenation to define a class CONST in PHP?

  I know that you can create global constants in terms of each other using string concatenation: define('FOO', 'foo'); define('BAR', FOO.'bar'); echo BAR; will print 'foobar'. However, I'm getting an error trying to do the same using class constants. class foobar { const foo = 'foo'; const foo2 = self::foo; const bar = self::foo.'bar'; } foo2 is defined without issue, but declaring const bar will error out Parse error: syntax error, unexpected '.', expecting ',' or ';' I've also tried using functions like sprintf() but it doesn't like the left paren any more than the string concatenator '.'. So is there any way to create class constants in terms of each other in anything more than a trivial set case like foo2?

• iPhone Application crashing upon loading a new Detail View

  Hi, My problem is when trying to load a detail view through a table cell, the application constantly crashes. The error that comes up when running through debug is "__TERMINATING_DUE_TO_UNCAUGHT_EXCEPTION___" objc exception thrown. If anyone can help me it would be greatly appreciated.   When using builtin types as fixture parameters, pytest prints out the value of the parameters in the test report. For example: @fixture(params=['hello', 'world'] def data(request): return request.param def test_something(data): pass Running this with py.test --verbose will print something like: test_example.py:7: test_something[hello] PASSED test_example.py:7: test_something[world] PASSED Note that the value of the parameter is printed in square brackets after the test name. • Is there a way to ignore Cache errors in Django?

  I've just set our development Django site to use redis for a cache backend and it was all working fine. I brought down redis to see what would happen, and sure enough Django 404's due to cache backend behaviour. Either the Connection was refused, or various other errors. Is there any way to instruct Django to ignore Cache errors, and continue processing the normal way? It seems weird that caching is a performance optimization, but can bring down an entire site if it fails. I tried to write a wrapper around the backend like so: class CacheClass(redis_backend.CacheClass): """ Wraps the desired Cache, and falls back to global_settings default on init failure """ def __init__(self, server, params): try: super(CacheClass, self).__init__(server, params) except Exception: from django.core import cache as _ _.cache = _.get_cache('locmem://') But that won't work, since I'm trying to set the cache type in the call that sets the cache type.   I've a generic UIViewController on my app. All the UIViewController on the app inherits from this generic one. I'm trying to automate the deallocation and releasing of attributes and IBOutlets as properties. I'm doing the first (attributes) on dealloc method and the second (IBOutlets as properties) on viewDidUnload. - (void) dealloc { [_att1 release]; _att1 = nil; [_att2 release]; _att2 = nil; // ... } - (void) viewDidUnload { self.att1 = nil; // att1 is an IBOutlet self.att2 = nil; // att2 is an IBOutlet // ... } Is there any way to iterate all my attributes and IBOutlets to simplify this operations?   I read a question earlier asking if there was a times method in Python, that would allow a function to be called n times in a row. Everyone suggested for _ in range(n): foo() but I wanted to try and code a different solution using a function decorator. How can I fix this?

  A view is flipped using this: self.transform = CGAffineTransformMakeScale(-1, 1); // self is an UIView To rotate this view: -(void)handleRotate:(UIRotationGestureRecognizer *)recognizer { recognizer.view.transform = CGAffineTransformRotate(recognizer.view.transform, recognizer.rotation); recognizer.rotation = 0; } The issue is that after the view is flipped so is the rotation's direction. Any solution how to fix this? Edit: My current solution is using a boolean and negate the recognizer.rotation value in handleRotate method. But I am still looking for the technical solution.

  I have a MKMapView inside a UITableView as a custom cell (don't ask ;) - don't know if it matters really), for which I register a regionDidChangeAnimated delegate method. This method gets called three times when the UITableView is loaded - once with the actual region and then two more times with a region that is way off. In the simulator, I consistently get a region with center (+37.43997405, -97.03125000). On the device, it seems to depend on the location reported by the location manager, which initializes the map view. Why am I getting three regionDidChangeAnimated calls? And why are the center coordinates for the last two of them off?   I am trying to make a url by first collecting the parameters, and then in one statement creating the actual url. Here is what I am trying to do: NSString *urlString = @"http://www.some_login_url.com?email=%@&password=%@"; NSString *email = self.email.text; NSString *password = self.password.text; NSString *url_to_send = [NSString stringWithFormat:@"%@%@", urlString , email , password]; So what I wanted to do was replace the @ symbols with the values in the variables, but instead the second variable just got appended to the end of the string. How would I change the last line so I could put the right parameters in their correct spots? Thanks!!

  I wonder why cellForRowAtIndexPath function is called when scrolling the UITableView. Does it mean on every scrolling cell configuration code runs again? • UIButton does not respond to touch events after changing its position using setFrame

  I have a view controller class (child) which extends from view controller class (parent). In the parent class's loadView() method I create a sub-view (named myButtonView) with two buttons (buttons are horizontally laid out in the subview) and add it to the main view. In the subclass I need to shift these two buttons up by 50pixels. So, I am shifting the buttonView by calling the setFrame method. This makes the buttons shift and render properly but they do not respond to touch events after this. Buttons work properly in the views of Parent class type. In the child class type view also, if I comment out the setFrame() call the buttons work properly. How can I shift the buttons and still make them respond to touch events? Any help is appreciated.
