I get a scene fully illuminated, not exactly the way like street light, can anyone share resources or explain how exactly i can achieve this?? I went through many light resources in net, could not properly understand....

  • iPhone OpenGLES textures - colour banding

    I've got a problem with openGL on iPhone which I'm sure must have a simple solution! When I load a texture and display it, I get a lot of what I believe is called 'Colour Banding', whereby the colours, particularly on gradients, seem to get automatically 'optimized'. Just to demonstrate that this wasn't anything wrong with my own code, I downloaded the iPhone 'Crashlanding' app and replaced the background image, and as you can see in the image below (Taken from the simulator), the exact same thing happens. The image on the left is the original PNG, and on the right is it in the game. It's almost as if it's palette is being downsized to a 256 colour one. Screenshot I'm sure this is related to the format I'm saving the image as, although it doesn't just happen with PNG's, it seems to happen no matter what image format I chose. Doing my head in! If you want to recreate this, simply download the crash landing app, and replace the background. Thanks so much in advance for any help.

  • How to stop OpenGL from applying blending to certain content? (see pics)

    Supporting Info: I use cocos2d to draw a sprite (graph background) on the screen (z:-1). I then use cocos2d to draw lines/points (z:0) on top of the background -- and make some calls to OpenGL blending functions before the drawing to SMOOTH out the lines. Problem: The problem is that: aside from producing smooth lines/points, calling these OpenGL blending functions seems to "degrade" the underlying sprite (graph background). As you can see from the images below, the "degraded" background seems to be made darker and less sharp in Case 2. So there is a tradeoff: I can either have (Case 1) a nice background and choppy lines/points, or I can have (Case 2) nice smooth lines/points and a degraded background. But obviously I need both. THE QUESTION: How do I set OpenGL so as to only apply the blending to the layer with the Lines/Points in it and thus leave the background alone? The Code: I have included code of the draw() method of the CCLayer for both cases explained above. As you can see, the code producing the difference between Case 1 and Case 2 seems to be 1 or 2 lines involving OpenGL Blending.   • Adding a decal using multitexturing on an iPhone

    I'm trying to overlay one image on top of another onto a simple quad. I set my bottom image as texture unit 0, and then my top image (which has a variable alpha) as texture unit 1. Unit 2 has mode GL_DECAL, which means the bottom texture should show up when the alpha is 0, and the top texture should show when the alpha is 1. But, only the top texture shows up and the bottom one doesn't appear at all. It's just white where the bottom texture should show through. glGetError() doesn't report any problems. Any help is appreciated.   • Android: Deciding between SurfaceView and OpenGL (GLSurfaceView)

    Is there a way to decide up front based on the expected complexity of a game/app in the planning phase whether to use regular Canvas drawing in a SurfaceView or to go with OpenGL? I've been playing around with a Canvas and only need 2D movement, and on a fairly new phone I'm getting pretty decent performance with a bunch of primitive objects and a few bitmaps running around the screen on a solid background. Is it fair to say that if I'm going to be drawing background images and increasing the number of objects being moved and drawn on top of them that I should go straight to OpenGL?

    Hi When parsing an .obj-file, with vertices and vertex-faces, it is easy to pass the vertices to the shader and the use glDrawElements using the vertex-faces. When parsing an .obj-file, with vertices and texture-coordinates, another type of face occur: texture-coordinate faces. When displaying textures, apart from loading images, binding them and passing texture coordinates into the parser, how to use the texture-coordinate faces? They differ from the vertex-faces and I suppose that the texture-coordinate faces have a purpose when displaying textures? Regards Niclas

  • glDrawElements allocating memory and not releasing it

    Using OpenGLES 1.1 on the iPhone 3G (device, not simulator), I do normal drawing fun. But at points during the run of the application I get giant memory spikes, after a lot of digging with instruments I have found that it is glDrawElements that is grabbing the memory. The buffer being allocated is 4 meg, which to me means its loading a texture into RAM, which I guess could be valid, but its never releasing this buffer, and is allocating multiple of them. How do I make sure that these buffers that GL is creating get destroyed, instead of just hanging around?

    I am using the back camera of an iphone4 and doing the standard and lengthy process of creating an AVCaptureSession and adding to it an AVCaptureDevice. Before attaching the AvCaptureDeviceInput of that camera to the session, I am testing my understanding of white balance and exposure, so I am trying this: [self.theCaptureDevice lockForConfiguration:nil]; [self.theCaptureDevice setWhiteBalanceMode:AVCaptureWhiteBalanceModeLocked]; [self.theCaptureDevice setExposureMode:AVCaptureExposureModeContinuousAutoExposure]; [self.theCaptureDevice unlockForConfiguration]; 1- Given that the various options for white balance mode are in an enum, I would have thought that the default is always zero since the enum Typedef variable was never assigned a value. I am finding out, if I breakpoint and po the values in the debugger, that the default white balance mode is actually set to 2. Unfortunately, the header files of AVCaptureDevice does not say what the default are for the different camera setting. 2- This might sound silly, but can I assume that once I stop the app, that all settings for whitebalance, exposure mode, will go back to their default. So that if I start another app right after, the camera device is not somehow stuck on those "hardware settings".

However, all the functions that I can read documentation on requires you to already have a valid OpenGL context (namely, create a GLSurfaceView and assign it a rendered. Then check the OpenGL parameters in the onSurfaceCreated). So, is there a way to check the extensions, renderer name and max texture size capability of the phone BEFORE having to create any OpenGL views?

    I am trying to rotate my camera using a Quaternion in libGDX. I have a Quaternion created and being manipulated but I have no idea how to apply it to the camera, everything I've tried hasn't moved the camera at all.   • Android depth buffer issue: Advice for anyone experiencing problem

    I've wasted around 30 hours this week writing and re-writing code, believing that I had misunderstood how the OpenGL depth buffer works. Everything I tried, failed. I have now resolved my problem by finding what may be an error in the Android implementation of OpenGL. See this API entry: http://www.opengl.org/sdk/docs/man/xhtml/glClearDepth.xml void glClearDepth(GLclampd depth); Specifies the depth value used when the depth buffer is cleared. The initial value is 1. Android's implementation has two versions of this command: glClearDepthx which takes an integer value, clamped 0-1 glClearDepthf which takes a floating point value, clamped 0-1 If you use glClearDepthf(1) then you get the results you would expect. If you use glClearDepthx(1), as I was doing then you get different results. (Note that 1 is the default value, but calling the command with the argument 1 produces different results than not calling it at all.) Quite what is happening I do not know, but the depth buffer was being cleared to a value different from what I had specified.

    On an iPhone: If I am writing a game that has multiple levels, with multiple animations (image sequences), jpg and png (transparent), some full screen and some not, some looped and some played once only. What is the best way of doing it? Each level might have up to 10MB of images. Add on to this music, and video (cut scenes). All 2D graphics, no 3D models. Is OpenGL required? Or can this be achieved with Quartz or Core Animation?

    Hello, first time asking a question here but been watching others answers for a while. My own question is one for improving the performance of my program. Currently I'm wiping the viewFrameBuffer on each pass through my program and then rendering the background image first followed by the rest of my scene. I was wondering how I go about rendering the background image once, and only wiping the rest of the scene for updating/re-rendering. I tried using a seperate buffer but I'm not sure how to present this new buffer to the render buffer. // Set the current EAGLContext and bind to the framebuffer.   • calculate camera up vector after glulookat()?

    I'm just starting out teaching myself openGL and now adding openAL to the mix. I have some planets scattered around in 3D space and when I touch the screen, I'm assigning a sound to a random planet and then slowly and smoothly flying the "camera" over to look at it and listen to it. The animation/tweening part is working perfectly, but the openAL piece isn't quiet right. I move the camera around by doing a tiny translate() and gluLookAt() for every frame to keep things smooth (tweening the camera position and lookAt coords). The trouble seems to be with the stereo image I'm getting out of the headphones.. it seems like the left/right/up/down is mixed up sometimes after the camera rolls or spins. I am pretty sure the trouble is here: ALfloat listenerPos[]={camera->currentX,camera->currentY,camera->currentZ}; ALfloat listenerOri[]={camera->currentLookX, camera->currentLookY, camera->currentLookZ, 0.0,//Camera Up X <--- here 0.1,//Camera Up Y <--- here 0.0}//Camera Up Z <--- and here alListenerfv(AL_POSITION,listenerPos); alListenerfv(AL_ORIENTATION,listenerOri); I'm thinking I need to recompute the UP vector for the camera after each gluLookAt() to straighten out the audio positioning problem.. but after hours of googling and experimenting I'm stuck in math that suddenly got way over my head. 1) Am I right that I need to recalculate the up vector after each gluLookAt() i do? 2) If so, can someone please walk me though figuring out how to do that?

  • What does setting the GL color before doing a texture mapping operation do?

    I am looking at some sample code in a book that creates a jittered antialiasing effect by repeatedly rendering a scene (at different offsets) onto a offscreen texture, then using that texture to repeatedly draw a quad in the main view with some blend stuff set up. To accumulate the color "correctly", the code is setting the color like so: glColor4f(f, f, f, 1); where f is 1.0/number_of_samples, and then binding the offscreen texture and rendering it. Since textures come with their own color and alpha data, what is the effect (mathematically and intuitively) that setting the overall "color" in advance achieves? Thanks.
