• inconsistent ERRORLEVEL in a batch file

  In a batch file, I have an inconsistent errorlevel behavior: The IP address 10.1.1.2 always replies. The following code always gives errorlevel 0 in one location (somewhere in the middle - exactly where i need it) inside the batch file. I copied only this snippet and placed it in the beginning and at the end of the batch file. In those locations, the result is always 1. Here is the code snippet: ping 10.1.1.2|Findstr /I /C:"timed out" /C:"host unreachable" echo %errorlevel% Any idea how to make it work also in the middle of the file? What am I doing wrong? I would hate to solve it with GOTOs(to the end of the file and back to where I need the result.)

• Set mouse or keyboard button to simulate left click and hold or rapid left click repeating in Windows?

  Does anyone know a way to configure Windows 7 or use third party software to do this? I would like to click my middle mouse button and have it tell Windows to left click and hold until I click the middle mouse button again. A keyboard key would be fine as well. Some games and apps have me holding down the left mouse button for a long time and I would like to reduce the stress on my mouse hand. Also, I would like to do a similar thing but have it repeatedly click the left mouse button automatically if possible. If none of that is possible, how about temporalily setting a keyboard key to achieve a left mouse button emulation?

• Dual monitor webbrowsing with Firefox - Addon that opens links on the other window?

  I often browse news aggressors like Reddit.com and I want to be able to have one Firefox window open on each of my two screens, and when I middle click on a link on my left screen, it will open up the tab on my right firefox window. I know that there are some plugins that can open up new windows, but if I do that I'll have to many windows open and I'd rather manage my open news stories via tab bars rather than with windows (clearer, more efficient to browse, and easier to bookmark). Is there a Firefox addon with which I can middle click on a link and it will open it in a new tab in my other window?

• How to extend selection in gnome-terminal?

  In a terminal I can select a single line, double clicking with the Left Mouse Button. With xterm, I can extend that selection clicking with the Right Mouse Button in the place I want to extend it. Then can I paste the whole selection with the Middle Mouse Button or paste it in other application. In gnome-terminal, it seems I can extend the selection clicking with the Left Mouse Button, but holding at the same time the Shift key. Visually, it seems the selection is done, but when clicking with the Middle Mouse button or pasting in other application, I only get the primary single line selection. How can I get the whole selection under gnome-terminal? Is it possible to use selections in gnome-terminal as xterm does? Cheers, Tomas.

• How to display certain lines from a text file in Linux?

  Hi, I guess everyone knows the useful Linux cmd line utilities head and tail. Head allows you to print the first X lines of a file, tail does the same but prints the end of the file. What is a good command to print the middle of a file? something like middle --start 10000000 --count 20 (print the 10,000,000th till th 10,000,010th lines). I'm looking for something that will deal with large files efficiently. I tried tail -n 10000000 | head 10 and it's horrifically slow. Thanks, Boaz

• Securing RDP access to Windows Server 2008 R2: is Network Level Authentication enough?

  I am a dev with little admin expertise, administering a single dedicated web server remotely. A recent independent security audit of our site recommended that "RDP is not exposed to the Internet and that a robust management solution such as a VPN is considered for remote access. When used, RDP should be configured for Server Authentication to ensure that clients cannot be subjected to man-in-the-middle attacks." Having read around a bit, it seems like Network Level Authentication is a Good Thing so I have enabled the "Allow connections only from Remote Desktop with NLA" option on the server today. Is this acion enough to mitigate the risk of a Man-in-the-Middle attack? Or are there other essential steps I should be taking? If VPN is essential, how do I go about it?

• Multiple SSIDs better or worse

  I'm just setting up a network in a student house with 10 rooms, 3 floors. Configuration at the moment is as follows: Virgin Media 100mb Cable Virgin SuperHub on ground floor broadcasting on SSID1 Second AP(Edimax) wired on middle floor broadcasting on SSID2 These two networks server all 3 floors fairly well but I was wondering whether it would be better to setup an individual SSID for each floor (both the routers allow me to configure up to 3 ssids on each!). Would this help with speed issues, i.e if someone on the top floor is downloading/streaming etc, this wouldn't affect someone on the middle floor on a different SSID Or, will it have no effect? • Vertical alignment problem in textbox in Microsoft Word 2007

  I pardon as its not a programming question at all. But if anybody can answer this it will be usefull for me. In MS word 2007 I drew a textbox and entered some text. Then I right clicked on textbox and went to format shape Then went to TextBox tab and reduced the top internal margin to 0.1 cm. But still it seems there is too much space at the top inside the textbox. I am not able to position the text exactly at the vertical middle of textbox. If I choose the auto-rezide option in format Shape, the textBox size is increases automatically but the text remains exactly at vertical and horizontal middle of textbox. but anyhow I need the textbox to be small. This is very minor but annoying problem. Can anybody help?

• Firefox cannot recognize certificates for well knows sites

  When trying to connect to well known sites, for instance hotmail.com Firefox shows that This Connection in Untrusted. In the OptionsAdvancedCertificates it's configured to select one matching certificate automatically. Why Firefox does not trust current connection? Can it be Man-in-the-middle attack or it's something like broken certificate storage on my computer? UPDATE UPDATE2 Solved: the problem is Antivirus Web Access protection. It interferes with HTTPS connection. Similar to Man-in-the-middle? Why ESET cannot do it correctly?

  Hi! I'm trying to create a 'left client' server < 'right client' setup but need some advice and tips. Let's say that I have a server-daemon on the left side, like a vnc-server that connects to the middle server. On the right side I've got a client that want to connect to the left server-daemon, but it has to be done through the middle server. I assume this should be done with some tunneling service. The server environment is a fully featured Debian Linux or Mac OS X Server host. Any idéas? Thanks / Trikks

  Currently I am using windows version git software for git, I found it is really hard to copy and paste in the console, and the mouse middle key is not supported. I used to putty SSH way to linux box then do things in putty, but at the moment I only have windows. so does anyone know some tools enable end-users have UNIX console ? • How to implement dynamic binary search for search and insert operations of n element (C or C++)

  The idea is to use multiple arrays, each of length 2^k, to store n elements, according to binary representation of n.Each array is sorted and different arrays are not ordered in any way. In the above mentioned data structure, SEARCH is carried out by a sequence of binary search on each array. INSERT is carried out by a sequence of merge of arrays of the same length until an empty array is reached. More Detail: Lets suppose we have a vertical array of length 2^k and to each node of that array there attached horizontal array of length 2^k. That is, to the first node of vertical array, a horizontal array of length 2^0=1 is connected,to the second node of vertical array, a horizontal array of length 2^1= 2 is connected and so on. So the insert is first carried out in the first horizontal array, for the second insert the first array becomes empty and second horizontal array is full with 2 elements, for the third insert 1st and 2nd array horiz. array are filled and so on. • A very strange problem related to Flash and Java

  Hello, I have created one simple program for showing webcam of the user. It works absolutely fine when i am running without integrating it in my java web application. But as soon as i copy paste the same files in Netbeans 6.8 and try to run it. My swf file is visible but the buttons in it are totally unclickable. I get the message of allow or deny showing webcam but the buttons are not clickable. It makes my application totally useless. I thought it's a minor issue but now it's getting on my nerves. I am trying it since 3 hours but didn't find any solution. I don't think anybody faced this issue till now that's why can't seem to find any thread in any forum on it in google. I am using Netbeans 6.8, Ubuntu, Glassfish V3 and JSF. Thanks in advance :). UPDATE:- It works fine on Windows XP. Then what can be the problem with Ubuntu? Any kind of permission rights that i need to give? 2nd UPDATE:- I think this is bug with Flash. I want it to be 600px width and 500px height. Even the style attribute doesn't work. Can i set height and width from within Flash? because without explicitly setting height and width, it looks very small. I think this should be very easy for all now. Thanks in advance :)

• Open Multiple Sites Without Reopening the Menus in Firefox

  Are you frustrated with having to reopen your menus for each website that you need or want to view? Now you can keep those menus open while opening multiple websites with the Stay-Open Menu extension for Firefox. Stay-Open Menu in Action You can start using the extension as soon as you have installed it…simply access your favorite links in the “Bookmarks Menu, Bookmarks Toolbar, Awesome Bar, or History Menu” and middle click on the appropriate entries. Here you can see our browser opening the Productive Geek website and that the “Bookmarks Menu” is still open. As soon as you left click on a link or click outside the menus they will close normally like before. Note: Middle clicked links open in new tabs. • SQL SERVER – Introduction to PERCENTILE_CONT() – Analytic Functions Introduced in SQL Server 2012

  SQL Server 2012 introduces new analytical function PERCENTILE_CONT(). The book online gives following definition of this function: Computes a specific percentile for sorted values in an entire rowset or within distinct partitions of a rowset in Microsoft SQL Server 2012 Release Candidate 0 (RC 0). For a given percentile value P, PERCENTILE_DISC sorts the values of the expression in the ORDER BY clause and returns the value with the smallest CUME_DIST value (with respect to the same sort specification) that is greater than or equal to P. If you are clear with understanding of the function – no need to read further. If you got lost here is the same in simple words – it is lot like finding median with percentile value. Now let’s have fun following query: USE AdventureWorks GO SELECT SalesOrderID, OrderQty, ProductID, PERCENTILE_CONT(0.5) WITHIN GROUP (ORDER BY ProductID) OVER (PARTITION BY SalesOrderID) AS MedianCont FROM Sales.SalesOrderDetail WHERE SalesOrderID IN (43670, 43669, 43667, 43663) ORDER BY SalesOrderID DESC GO The above query will give us the following result: You can see that I have used PERCENTILE_COUNT(0.5) in query, which is similar to finding median. Let me explain above diagram with little more explanation. • So&hellip; What is a SharePoint Developer?

  A few days ago Stacy Draper and I were chatting about what it means to be a SharePoint Developer. That actually turns about to be a conversation with lots of shades of grey. Stacy thought it would make a good blog post… well, I can’t promise this to be a GOOD blog post… So, anyway, I decided to let off a little bomb this morning by posting the following tweet on Twitter: @mrackley: Can someone be considered a SharePoint Developer if all they know how to do is work in SPD? Now, I knew this is a debate that has been going on since the first SharePoint Designer User put SharePoint Developer on their resume. There are probably several blogs out there on the subject, but with the wildfire that is jQuery and a few other new features out there I believe it is an important subject to tackle again. I got a lot of great feedback as well on Twitter. The entire twitter conversation is at the end of this blog posting. Thanks everyone for their opinions. Who cares? Why does it matter? Can’t we all just get along? Yes it matters… everything must be labeled and put in it’s proper place. Pigeon holing is the only way to go!  Just kidding.. I’m not near that anal, but yes! It is important to be able to properly identify the skill set of those people on your team and correctly identify the role you are wanting to hire. Saying you are a “SharePoint Developer” is just too vague and just barely begins to answer the question. Also, knowing who’s on your team and what they can do will ensure you give your clients the best people for the job. A Developer writes code right? So, a Developer uses Visual Studio! Whoa, hold on there Sparky. Even if I concede that to be a developer you have to write code then you still can’t say a SharePoint Developer has to use Visual Studio.  So, you can spell C#, how well can you write XSLT? How’s your jQuery? Sorry bud, that’s code whether you like it or not. There are many ways to write code in SharePoint that have nothing to do with cracking open Visual Studio. So, what are the different ways to develop in SharePoint then? How many different ways can you “develop” in SharePoint?? A lot… Out of the box features In SharePoint you can create a site, create a custom list on that site, do basic calculations in a calculated column, set up alerts, and add all sorts of web parts to a page. Let’s face it.. that IS development! javaScript/jQuery Perhaps you’ve heard by now about this thing called jQuery? It’s all over the place and the answer to a lot of people’s prayers. However be careful, with great power comes great responsibility. Remember, javaScript is executed on the client side and if you abuse it your performance could be affected. Also, Marc Anderson (@sympmarc) wrote a pretty awesome javaScript library called SPServices.  This allows you to access SharePoint’s Web Services using jQuery. How freakin cool is that? With these tools at your disposal the number of things you CAN’T do without Visual Studio grows smaller and smaller. This is definitely development no matter what anyone else says and there is no Visual Studio involved. SharePoint Designer Ahhh.. The cause of and the answer to all of your SharePoint development problems. With SharePoint Designer you can use DataView Web Parts, develop (there’s that word again) your branding, and even connect to external datasources.  There’s a lot you can do in SharePoint Designer. It’s got it’s shortcomings, but it is an invaluable tool in the SharePoint developers toolbox. InfoPath So, can InfoPath development really be considered SharePoint development? I would say yes. You can connect to SharePoint lists, populate fields in a SharePoint list, and even write code in InfoPath. Sounds like SharePoint development to me. Visual Studio – Web Services/WCF So, get this. You can write code for SharePoint and not have a clue what the 12 hive is, what “site actions” means, or know how to do ANYTHING in SharePoint? Poppycock! You say? SharePoint Web Services I say… With SharePoint Web Services you can totally interact with SharePoint without knowing anything about SharePoint. I don’t recommend it of course, but it’s possible. What can you write using SharePoint Web Services? How about a little application called SharePoint Designer? Visual Studio – Object Model And here we are finally:  the SharePoint Object Model.  When you hear “SharePoint Developer” most people think of someone opening Visual Studio and creating a custom web part, workflow, event receiver, etc.. etc.. but I hope that by now I have made the point that this is NOT the only form of SharePoint Development! Again… Who cares? Just crack open Visual Studio for everything! Problem solved! Let’s ponder for a moment, shall we? The business comes to you with a requirement that involves some pretty fancy business calculations, and a complicated view that they do NOT want to look like SharePoint. “No Problem” you proclaim you mighty SharePoint Developer. You go back to your cube, chuckle at the latest Dilbert comic, and crack open Visual Studio. Then you build your custom web part… fight with all the deployment, migration, and UAT that you must go through and proclaim victory two weeks later!!!! Well done my good sir/ma’am! Oh wait… it turns out Sally who is not a “developer” did the exact same thing with a Dataview web part and some jQuery and it’s been in production for two weeks? #CockinessFail I know there are many ASP.NET developers out there that can create a custom control and wrap it to be a SharePoint Web Part.  That does NOT mean they are SharePoint Developers though as far as I’m concerned and I personally would much rather have someone on my team that can manipulate the heck (yes, I said ‘heck’) out of SharePoint using Dataview Web Parts, jQuery, and a roll of duct tape. Just because you know how to write code in Visual Studio does not mean you are a SharePoint Developer. What’s the conclusion here? How do we define ‘it’ and what ‘it’ is called? Fortunately, this is MY blog. I don’t have to give answers, I can stir the pot, laugh and leave you to ponder what it means! There is obviously no right or wrong answer here (unless you disagree with me,then you are flat out wrong). Anyway, there are many opinions.  Here’s mine.  If you put SharePoint Developer on your resume make sure to clearly specify HOW you develop in SharePoint and what tools you use. If we must label these gurus of jQuery and SPD, how about “SharePoint Client Developer” or “SharePoint Front End Developer”? Just throwing out an idea. Whatever we call them, to say they are not developers is short-sighted, arrogant, and unfair. • Focus follows mouse stops working when opening window from launcher and no click to focus

  This is 12.04 default desktop (unity). I set it to focus follows mouse, and changed the menus to be on the window. This worked for a while, then some unknown even, maybe an upgrade maybe some other setting change caused it to stop working. There are many ways for this behavior to start but one reliable one is to bring a window to the foreground/focus with the launcher. Now the focus is stuck on that window and not just the window but the regions within the window so the close, maximize, minimize and menus do not work. I have to use mouse middle and then mouse right and then focus follows mouse is restored for a bit. The exact details of the mouse action aren't clear, sometimes it seems like just mouse middle helps, sometimes just right some times a desperate sequence of clicks :-( I have tried switching to the gnome desktop and it seems to occur less there but it is not eliminated. I have tried switching mice to an old wired USB mouse. I have tried creating a new account and that has not worked. I have observed "split focus" where to scroll button scrolls one one window but the input goes to another. I go trapped recently where my keyboard input went to libre office calc, but I was selecting the search term in the chrome address window. The selection "grayed" but the keyboard input for the search went to libre. Regions in windows have very confused focus. I have to work hard to get focus on for example the close gliph (X) or the minimize gliph (_).

• ThinkPad TrackPoint Buttons Not Working Well

  The TrackPoint itself works fine. But the three buttons below the spacebar don't. For example if I were to copy these lines, 1-10, using trackpoint buttons it'd start highlighting at 7. If I use the main TrackPad (the part every laptop) and it's buttons it works normal, 1-10: 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 It's like the button doesn't register right away. I use the TrackPoint ALL the time. I love it and I don't think I can go back to the normal TrackPad, so is there anyway to fix this? An app or setting? Also, the middle button to scroll isn't working at all I tried: Middle Button on ThinkPad Not Working with 10.10 update And put it in /usr/share/... and /usr/lib... neither seem to work. They USED to work. I used to be able to use that method of fixing it, but it seems in 11.04 this doesnt work? I dont wanna give up on Ubuntu yet...

• Http handler for classic ASP application for introducing a layer between client and server

  I've a huge classic ASP application where in thousands of users manage their company/business data. Currently this is not multi-user so that application users can create users and authorize them to access certain areas in the system. I'm thinking of writing a handler which will act as middle man between client and server and go through every request and find out who the user is and whether he is authorized to access the data he is trying to. For the moment ignore about the part how I'm going to check the authorization and all that stuff. Just want to know whether I can implement a ASP.net handler and use it as middle man for the requests coming for a asp website? I just want to read the url and see what is the page user is trying to access and what are the parameters he is passing in the url the posted data. Is this possible? I read that Asp.net handler cannot be used with asp website and I need to use isapi filter or extensions for that and that can be developed only c/c++. Can anybody through some light on this and guide me whether I'm in the right direction or not?

• Pasting from vim in terminal to Google Docs (Firefox + Vimperator) - need to understand

  I had some trouble with copy-pasting text from vim in terminal to Google Docs (aka Drive) document (hereafter GDd) in FF browser (with Vimperator). Note: I have a file opened in Vim 7.2 in terminal :version displays both +clipboard and +xterm-clipboard I'm on Ubuntu 10.04 LTS, so I don't think that's Unity-related I want to use Vim, not GVim, nor gedit... I'm avid fan of mouseless navigation, so solution with mouse was not what I wanted. I have the solution, but I need understanding. What I tried and where it gets me: Yanking whole file text via: ggvGy allows me to: paste it via mouse middle button, NOT with Ctrl+v or Shift+Insert here, in text area for entering question text in gedit but NOT in GDd where I want it pasted, even if I switch Vimperator to pass-through mode with Insert does NOT show in XClip after xclip -o From gedit, I can copy-paste the text into GDd (Vimperator's pass-through mode not required). :%! !xclip -i (or :first, last) reports whole file (all lines, to be precise) as filtered, though shell returns 1 `xclip -o' returns nothing (is empty) or returns previously copied value with 2. no surprise, but I can't paste at all not only to GDd but also to gedit or here setting clipboard (:set clipboard=unnamed) to unnamed doesn't help using "+y or "*y on whole file text actually does the trick So, the question (it's actually three, say "split" and I will): why middle mouse button pastes different things than Ctrl+v and how to know what will be pasted with each? why just yanking (without registers) works with mouse but not with keyboard / XClip? why didn't unnamed register help? After setting, it should make unnamed and * registers same?

• Assuming "clean code/architecture" is there a difference in "effort" between PHP or Java/J2EE web application development?

  A client asked us to estimate effort when selecting PHP as the implementation language for his next web-based application. We spent about a week exploring PHP, prototyping, testing etc., We are quite new to this language - may have hacked around it in the past but, let's go with PHP-noobs but application development experts (for the lack of a better, less flattering word :) It seems, that if we write, clean maintainable code, follow separation of concerns, enterprise architecture patters (DAOs etc.) the 'effort' in creating an object-oriented PHP based web-application seems to be the same for a Java based one. Here's our equation for estimating the effort (development/delivery time): ConstructionEffort = f(analysis, design, coding, testing, review, deployment) We were specifically comparing effort estimates in creating an enterprise application with the following: PHP + CakePHP/CodeIgniter (should we have considered others?) Java + Spring + Restlet It's an end-to-end application: Client: Javascript/jQuery + HTML/CSS Middle tier/Business Logic - (Still evaluating PHP/Java) Database: MySQL The effort estimates of the 1st and 3rd tier are constant and relatively independent of the middle tier's technology. At a high level with an initial breakdown into user stories of the requested features as well as a high-level SWAG on the sheer number of classes/SLOC that would be required for PHP doesn't seem to differ by much from what is required of the same in Java. Is this correct? We are basing our initial estimates on the initial prototyping/coding we've done with PHP - we are currently disregarding fluency with the language as a factor, since that'll be an initial hurdle and not a long term impediment IMHO (we also have sufficient time to become quite fluent with PHP). I'm interested in knowing the programmers' perspective with respect to effort when creating similar applications with either of the languages to justify choosing one over the other. Are we missing something here? It seems we are going against popular belief of PHP being quicker to market (or we being very fluent with Java have our vision clouded). It doesn't seem to have any coding/programming effort saving from what we/ve played around with.
