  • Alternatives to MS project server

    I manage a small group and I'd keep my work breakdown in project. However, it's difficult to provide my team with an adequate view into the project and ability to report on their progress. I looked at MS Project Server (the sharepoint webpart) but it's an expensive proposition. Has anyone had any experience with any other tool (commercial is fine) that helps team view and report on their work as managed by MS Project? FWIW, I have looked at OpenProj and it appears to be a decent solution for viewing project files on the desktop. Anything web-based, keeping in mind that I'd like people to report on their work not just view their work.

    Hi, I would like to know what best non-paypal options are for paying users of your website (for services rendered for instance). How are others doing this at the moment? If you could mention specific services providers that would be most useful. This would have to work internationally, not be limited to one country.   • Alternatives to static methods on interfaces for enforcing consistency

    In Java, I'd like to be able to define marker interfaces, that forced implementations to provide static methods. For example, for simple text-serialization/deserialization I'd like to be able to define an interface that looked something like this: public interface TextTransformable<T>{ public static T fromText(String text); public String toText(); Since interfaces in Java can't contain static methods though (as noted in a number of other posts/threads: here, here, and here this code doesn't work. What I'm looking for however is some reasonable paradigm to express the same intent, namely symmetric methods, one of which is static, and enforced by the compiler. Right now the best we can come up with is some kind of static factory object or generic factory, neither of which is really satisfactory. Note: in our case our primary use-case is we have many, many "value-object" types - enums, or other objects that have a limited number of values, typically carry no state beyond their value, and which we parse/de-parse thousands of time a second, so actually do care about reusing instances (like Float, Integer, etc.) and its impact on memory consumption/g.c. Any thoughts?

  • Selenium Webdriver Java - looking for alternatives for Actions and Robot when performing drag-and-drop

    I first tried Actions class and the drag-and-drop does work on different elements, however it was unable to locate the a specific draggable element on it's exact screen/webpage position. Here's the code I've used: Point loc = driver.findElement(By.id("thiselement")).getLocation(); System.out.println(loc); WebElement drag = driver.findElement(By.id("thiselement")); Actions test = new Actions(driver); test.dragAndDropBy(drag, 0, 60).build().perform(); I checked the element with it's pixel location and it prints (837, -52), which was somewhere on top of the webpage and was pixels away from the actual element. Then I tried using the Robot class and works perfectly fine on my script, but can only provide constant successful runs on a single test machine, running it with a different machine with different screen resolution and screen size will render the script to fail due to the dependency of Robot on the pixel location of the element. The sample code of the Robot script I'm using: Robot dragAndDrop = new Robot(); dragAndDrop.mouseMove(945, 166); //actual pixel location of the draggable element dragAndDrop.mousePress(InputEvent.BUTTON1_MASK); sleep(3000); dragAndDrop.mouseMove(945, 226); dragAndDrop.mouseRelease(InputEvent.BUTTON1_MASK); sleep(3000); Is there any alternative for Actions and Robot to automate drag-and-drop? Or maybe a help on working the script to work on Actions as I really can't use Robot. Thanks in advance.

    We currently use Cradiator to display the status of our continuous integration (CI) builds from CruseControl.net, on a 42" Samsung television on display high-up in our IT department. Cradiator is a great starting place, but we're getting to the point whereby we're having lots of projects on there and it's starting to get a bit 'full'. What I'd like to know is, what do you use to display your build statuses? Custom software? Off the shelf stuff? etc. Alternatively, I'm looking for ideas on how we improve on Cradiator.

    I'm trying to generate a string from my own class called Value using boost::spirit::karma, but i got stuck with this. I've tried to extract my problem into a simple example. But the second karma::generate() fails with boost::bad_get because karma tries to eat a bool and calls therefore Value::operator bool(). My next thought was to modify my generator rule and use the eps() generator together with a condition but here i got stuck: value_rule = (eps( ... ) << bool_) | (eps( ... ) << double_); I'm unable to fill the brackets of the eps generator with sth. like this (of course not working): eps(value.type() == BoolType) I've tried to get into boost::phoenix, but my brain seems not to be ready for things like this.     I'm starting a project that will have to instrument java applications for coverage purposes (definition-usage of variables, etc). It has to add trace statements and some logic to the application and maybe remove statements. I have searched for ways of instrument Java code and what I always find is about bytecode instrumentation. My question is: It's the only way to instrument Java applications? There is any other way to do that? What are the advantages of bytecode instrumentation over the others? I'll probably use the bytecode solution, but I want to know what are the problems with the other approaches (if any) to decide precisely. Thanks!

    In my app, I am displaying 4 "tabs", each are local content through a UIWebView. I create HTML markup from my simple data. This is slow to load and I'm trying to speed it up. I'm using UIWebView to accomplish these: 1. hyperlinks 2. some styling - font colors 3. HTML tables Writing my own class to handle this is okay for (1.) hyperlinks - I can use a touch event to call a method. And (2.) styling - I can use UILables to do basic formatting, no biggie here. BUT what I really love about the UIWebViews is the (3.) HTML tables! I find it troublesome to line up the UILabels in a way that mimics HTML Tables, for instance, one cell's height in a row changes the height of all cells. I'm looking for another perspective or knowledge of an alternative.

    My java J2SE application is reading a lot of (png) images from the web and some of them use features such as a transparency color for true-color images (tRNS section) that Sun's/Oracle's PNGImageReader implementation simply ignores. Therefore the common solution for loading via ImageIO.read(...); does not work for me as it relies on this incomplete PNGImageReader implementation. Does anybody know a png reader implementation that can read all forms of PNG images correctly - those with color table or true-color and alpha transparency or transparent color? As it is for a GPL project it should be a non-commercial one that can be included without licensing problems into the app. Edit: My be this question was too specific. Therefore let be redesign my question: Who knows alternative implementations and libraries that are able to load PNG files? I will then test the implementations for their capabilities to load some test png images. Edit2: The end result have to be a BufferedImage

    What languages other than C and C++ have explicit reference and pointer type qualifiers? People seem to be easily confused by the right-to-left reading order of types, where char*& is "a reference to a pointer to a character", or a "character-pointer reference"; do any languages with explicit references make use of a left-to-right reading order, such as &*char/ref ptr char? I'm working on a little language project, and legibility is one of my key concerns. It seems to me that this is one of those questions to which it's easy for a person but hard for a search engine to provide an answer. Thanks in advance!

    Hello, I am J2SE developer but I have rich web-background (php, perl/cgi and so on) and now I am starting new project. It will have web interface, spaghetti business logic, relational database as storage and connections to other services. I do it from the scratch. My colleagues told me to use spring, spring security and struts. I look briefly at J2EE spec and found that it covers almost all aspects of enterprise application. I asked my colleagues why do they need spring and struts, but looks like they use technologies simply because they are familiar with them and not familiar with classic J2EE stack. So, my question is: what is bad about J2EE? Why do I need spring if there are JNDI lookups? It will take a day or two to create fake InitialContext for unit-tests. And that is all: I stand with out of external tools like spring. Why do I need spring-security if there is a security built in Servlets spec? I can map any request to any servlet using web.xml, no struts.xml is needed. I can use servlet-filters instead of struts interceptors. There is RMI, so I do not need spring-remote. And so on.. Why should I bother my self with all that fancy stuff if there is J2EE? I really want to find situation when J2EE is not enough. Do you have any? Thanks!

    I am developing an application that makes use of the Java Interface as more than a Java interface, i.e., During runtime, the user should be able to list the available methods within the interface class, which may be anything: private Class<? extends BaseInterface> interfaceClass. At runtime, I would like to enum the available methods, and then based on what the user chooses, invoke some method. My question is: Does the Java "Interface" architecture provide any method for me to peek and invoke methods without using the Reflection API? I wish there were something like this (Maybe there is): private Interface<? extends BaseInterface> interfaceAPI; public void someMethod(){ interfaceAPI.listMethods(); interfaceAPI.getAnnotations(); } Maybe there is some way to use Type Generics to accomplish what I want?     I have a string column which contains some numeric fields, but a lot are 0, empty string or null. The rest are numbers having different range, all positive. I tried to create a custom order by. The order would be done by two fields. First I would like to order the fields that have this number 0 and then sort by name. So something this would work: select * from table order by sign(referenceid) desc, name asc; But Sqlite lacks the sign() -1/0/1 function, and I am on Android and I can't create user defined functions. What other options I have to get this sort done.
