  • Why does iTunes sometimes loose everything in the library when upgrading?

    All of my kids have experienced problems at one time or another, when upgrading iTunes on their laptops. The version number doesn't matter, as this has happened for the last couple of years, so the version number has changed. It isn't consistent. What is consistent is sometimes, but not always, after upgrading iTunes, it will have lost all of it's information about the music, podcasts, etc, that it had. And yet if I bring up Windows Explorer, I can find all of it there. It's a pain to have to recover that. The pertinent question is, how do you recover all of the music, podcasts, playlists, etc, that is on the computer, but iTunes doesn't show it in the library? Second, what causes iTunes to do this in the first place?

  • Opera: closed window w/many tabs, window still open w/one tab, how to retrieve the many tabs

    This is a little recipe for a little disaster: accidentally close a window with many important tabs open, only to find out that another window is still active with one tab open. Closing it will overwrite the saved tabs of the other window, which I want to recover. I need to recover the window with "many tabs" if possible,I didn't yet close the window with the one tab open, hopefully that prevents overwriting the saved settings. How do I retrieve, now that Opera is still active, the tabs of the closed window? I.e., where would Opera normally store these tabs when it closes a window? Can I prevent it from overwriting the saved state of "many tabs" with the current "one tab"?

  • Restore "lost" user after Active Directory removal?

    Is it possible to restore lost users after Active Directory unistallation ? (I forgot to switch users to local users) The computer run Windows Server 2008 R2 Entreprise, and all the registry linked to the user i want to restore seems to still be there, user's folder is still on the harddrive, and useraccount2 still show the user (But flagged as unknown user) Some folders still have rigts set to this lost user, and even the local default Admin account cannot open/delete the folder. (But the real problem here is to find how to recover users account, the folder can be deleted an other way) All users i want te restore was originaly local users, converted to domain users after Active Directory installation. I think that if i can change user's sid (choosing the sid manually) i'll be able to easily recover rights on folders Regards

  • Acad 14 SOLIDS disappeared, DWG file doesn't open correctly

    I made a drawing in Autocad 14 (Win XP) containing of mostly SOLID's. I saved and re-opened it multiple times without any problem. Before I last saved it I viewed my drawing using the SHADE functions. After re-opening all my SOLIDS have disappeared. I spent numerous hours searching for a solution, tried SATFIX.ARX , AUDIT, RECOVER without success (ACIS error - which should be gone after applying SATFIX), changed my computer locale from German (decimal = comma) to English (decimal = dot) but my screen remains empty (and yes I tried to recover from a .BAK, too) I also tried to export (the non-display drawing) into DXF and can confirm that all my objects are in there, but re-opening the DXF results in a huge ACIS error list again I am desperate - please can someone help - thanks! Mike

    Domain controller failed to restore using windows backup tools One Issue: One 08 R2 domain controller with fully daily backup(only one controller in this company) is out of services due to hardware issue. The below two methods i tried to recover to the new purchasing server,but it is fail. 1)First Method: Using the windows 2008 R2 CD to boot and carry out recover from backup. Everything is OK, but after reboot it will come out blue screen and restart again. 2)Second Method: a)Install the OS in this new server b) Reboot the server to DSRM. c)Using the Windows Backup Tools to restore the system states only After reboot, it will come out the blue screen error and restart again. I know this is may be the different hardware issue, but how to resolve? Or can we only restore the AD services not whole system status? Any suggestion?

  • spontaneous hard disk password

    I had an HP proliant server go down recently. All of the sudden the sas controller (e200i) would not see any of the physical disks. New disks were detected just fine. I thought it was odd that all 6 disks would go down at one time so sent them to a data recovery firm to find out what happened. I'm being told that, somehow, all of the disks were spontaneously password protected. These are Hitachi 2.5" drives and I guess this is something of a known issue. The company has worked for a while to try and recover them, with no luck. Has anyone had experience with this? Any recommendations for how to recover the drives or a company that might have the expertise to do so?

  • What's the easiest way to delete Vim swapfiles I've already recovered from?

    Sometimes Vim crashes and leaves me a swapfile. That's awesome. Then I open the file I was editing and Vim asks me if I want to recover. I do, thanks. When it's done, Vim tells me, You may want to delete the .swp file now. Why, yes, I do. How do I do that? I figured it would just start using the old swapfile as a swapfile again and clean it up when I quit, but that's not true. It makes a new one, cleans that one up, and when I open the file again it prompts me again to recover from the first one. Surely I'm missing something.

  • Recovering database files from a corrupted VHD

    We have a SQL server hosted on a virtual machine. Our hosting company updated/restarted the server and for some reason the virtual machines became unbootable. We've spoken to Microsoft and used a few higher level tools to attempt to recover the virtual machines but were unsuccessful. In browsing the file system the database folder doesn't even appear. I'm wondering if there are any lower level tools that might be able to find and copy the database files. As far as I know the physical hard drive is ok, so I'm hoping there may be some way to recover the files themselves even if the rest of the virtual machine file-system is a loss. Obviously we're in a bit of a bind, and any help/ suggestions are very much appreciated.

  • Linux mdadm software RAID 6 - does it support bit corruption recovery?

    Wikipedia says "RAID 2 is the only standard RAID level, other than some implementations of RAID 6, which can automatically recover accurate data from single-bit corruption in data." Does anyone know if the RAID 6 mdadm implementation in Linux is one such implementation that can automatically detect and recover from single-bit data corruption. This pertains to CentOS / Red Hat 6 if those are different from other versions. I tried searching online but didn't have much luck. With SATA error rates being 1 in 1E14 bits, and a 2TB SATA disk containing 1.6E13 bits, this is especially relevant to preventing data corruption. Thanks!

  • LVM vs RAID0 vs RAID "linear" - Combine 2 disks as one, data recovery?

    Hi there, given two 2TB USB external disks that have to be combined to one 4TB volume and formatted with one big Filesystem (XFS), I have a small question to ask. Does LVM provide better Data recovery, should one disk be unplugged/damaged by being able to recover the data of the still working disk or is everything lost? I would appreciate a solution where only the data of one disk is lost and I can recover the content of the other with the usual filesystem/lvm/raid tools. Is that possible with LVM or RAID "linear"? This is for storing unimportant files that can be retrieved from backup, but I want to save time :) Thank you in advance

  • What are my options for a disk with what seems to be a corrupted filesystem?

    I have a friend with an old Dell that will not boot into Windows. It has an IDE drive. It spins up. I have an IDE to USB device. I've attached the drive via that device to a working laptop. The drive does not mount. If I go into Disk Management I can see the drive but it will not initalize, says "Drive not ready." I've also booted into a linux live cd to see if the drive mounts, it does not. I am just trying to recover some pictures from the drive. The data is not important enough to send to a professional. The issue is more of a curosity on how to recover data if and when these situations would occur in the future.

  • How does Linux's unlink on a NTFS filesystem differs from Window's own implementation?

    I have an external USB disk with an NTFS filesystem on it. If I remove a file from Windows and I run one of the several "undelete" utilities (say, TestDisk) I can easily recover the file (because "it's still there but it's marked as deleted"). If I remove the file from Linux (I'm using Ubuntu) no utility can recover the file (unless I use a deep-search signature-based one). Why? It looks like Linux does not just "mark it as deleted" but it wipes away some on-disk structure, is this the case?

    So lets say you've failed at preventing a drive failure, and also, you've failed to make a backup of said drive. Push has come to shove and now you need a way to recover you're precious data. Has anybody out there run into this situation? And if so could you please provide any suggestions on how to recover the data based on your experiences? For example have you used any data recovery services that you could either recommend, or that you would definitely avoid if you had a do-over? Thanks in advance

    I've bought an Solid State Drive (SSD) for my MacBook Pro, and now I need to exchange it somehow. Would this strategy work? 1) Create an backup with Time Machine (Snow Leopard) 2) Then replace the old HDD 3) Insert the new HDD 4) Install Snow Leopard (same version as previously used) 5) Open up Time Machine, and recover from the last backup I'm not sure about how to do the last part. Is that hard? What are the neccessary steps? Or is there a better way? Maybe I don't need to re-install Snow Leopard completely? Maybe the Install CD already offers an option to recover from Backup?

  • Recreating OMS instances in a HA environment when instances on all nodes are lost

    Oracle highly recommends deploying EM in a HA environment. The best practices for HA deployments, backup and housekeeping of your Enterprise Manager environment are documented in the Oracle Enterprise Manager Advanced Configuration Guide. It is imperative that there is a good disaster recovery plan in place for your EM deployment. In this post I want to talk about a customer who failed to do the correct planning and housekeeping for EM and landed in a situation where we the all the OMSes were nearly blown away had we not jumped to help. We recently hit an issue at a customer site where we had a two node OMS setup of the Enterprise Manager and a RAC Database being used as the EM repository. An accidental delete of the OMS oracle home left us with a single node deployment. While we were trying to figure out a possible path to recover the first node, the second node was rebooted under a maintenance window. What followed was a complete site outage as the Admin and managed servers would not start on either of the nodes. In my situation there were - No backups of the Oracle Homes from any node - No OMS Configuration snapshots (created using the “emctl exportconfig oms” command) and the instance home was completely lost on node 1 which also had the Admin Server  We did however have: - A copy of the emkey.ora that I found under the OMS_ORACLE_HOME/ of the second node (NOTE: it is a bad practice to have your emkey present under the OMS Oracle home directory on the same server as the OMS. The backup of the emkey should be maintained on some other server. In this case however it was a savior in my situation since there were no backups - The oms oracle home on the second node but missing a number of files and had a number of changes done to the files in the home. There were a number of attempts to start the server by modifying various files based on the Weblogic server logs to have atleast node up and running but all of them failed. Here is how you can recover from this scenario: Follow these steps: STEP 1: Check status of emkey.ora Check whether the emkey exists is present in the EM repository or not. Run the following command: $OMS_ORACLE_HOME/bin/emctl status emkey If the output is something like this below then you are good to go and the key is present in the repository ./emctl status emkey Oracle Enterprise Manager 11g Release 1 Grid Control Copyright (c) 1996, 2010 Oracle Corporation. All rights reserved. Enter Enterprise Manager Root (SYSMAN) Password : The EMKey is configured properly. Here are the messages that you might see as the emctl status emkey output depending upon whether the EM Admin Server is up and if the key is configured properly: Case1:  AdminServer is up, emkey is proper in CredStore & not in repos. This is same as the output of the command shown above:The EMKey is configured properly Case 2: AdminServer is up, emkey is proper in CredStore & exists in repos:The EMKey is configured properly, but is not secure. Secure the EMKey by running "emctl config emkey -remove_from_repos".Case 3: AdminServer is down or emkey is corrupted in CredStore) & (emkey exists in repos): The EMKey exists in the Management Repository, but is not configured properly or is corrupted in the credential store.Configure the EMKey by running "emctl config emkey -copy_to_credstore".Case 4: (AdminServer is down or emkey is corrupted in CredStore) & (emkey does not exist in repos): The EMKey is not configured properly or is corrupted in the credential store and does not exist in the Management Repository. To correct the problem:1) Get the backed up emkey.ora file.2) Configure the emkey by running "emctl config emkey -copy_to_credstore_from_file". If not the key was not secured properly, we will have to be put in the repository before proceeding. Look at the next step 2 for doing this There may be cases (like mine) where running emctl may give errors like the following: $OMS_ORACLE_HOME/bin/emctl status emkey Exception in thread “Main Thread” java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: oracle/security/pki/OracleWallet At oracle.sysman.emctl.config.oms.EMKeyCmds.main (EMKeyCmds.java:658) Just move to the next step to put the key back in the repository STEP 2: Put emkey.ora back in the repository Skip this step if your emkey.ora is present in the repository. If not, you need to put the key back in the repository See if you can run the following command (with sample output): $OMS_ORACLE_HOME/bin/emctl config emkey –copy_to_repos Oracle Enterprise Manager 11g Release 1 Grid Control Copyright (c) 1996, 2010 Oracle Corporation. All rights reserved. The EMKey has been copied to the Management Repository. This operation will cause the EMKey to become unsecure. After the required operation has been completed, secure the EMKey by running "emctl config emkey -remove_from_repos". Typically the key is present under $OMS_ORACLE_HOME/sysman/config directory before being removed after the install as a best practice. If you hit any errors while running emctl commands like the one mentioned in step 1, jump to step 3 and we will take care of the emkey.ora in Step 5 STEP 3: Get the port information Check for the existing port information in the emd.properties file under EM_INSTANCE_DIRECTORY (typically gc_inst directory right above the Middleware home where you have deployed em. For eg. /u01/app/oracle/product/gc_inst in case your oms home is /u01/app/oracle/product/Middleware/oms11g) In my case I got the information from the emgc.properties present in the gc_inst on the second node. If you can run emctl you may want to try the following command as well $OMS_ORACLE_HOME/bin/emctl status oms –details Note this information as this will be used in the next step STEP 4: Perform cleanup on Node 1 Note the oracle home of the Weblogic and OMS, get the list of applied patches in the homes (using opatch lsinventory command), take a backup copy of the home just in case we need it and then de-install/remove oracle homes, update inventory and cleanup processes on the first node STEP 5: Perform Software Only Installation of OMS on Node 1 Perform Weblogic 10.3.2 installation exactly under the same location as present in the earlier installation. Perform software only installation of the OMS using the following command. This will not run any configuration assistants and bypass all user interface validations runInstaller –noconfig -validationaswarnings Select the “Additional OMS” option while performing the installation. Provide the same path for OMS and Instance directories like the previous installation Use the port information collected in Step 3 while performing the installation. Once the installation is complete run the allroot.sh script to complete the binary deployment STEP 6: Apply one-off patches At this point you can apply any patches to the OMS Oracle Home previously. You only need to run opatch to install the patch in the home and not required to run the SQLs STEP 7: Copy EM key This step is only required if you were not able to use emctl command to put the emkey back into the EM repository in STEP 2 Copy the emkey.ora file of the old installation you have under $OMS_ORACLE_HOME/sysman/config directory of the newly installed OMS STEP 8: Configure Grid Control Domain Run the following command to configure the EM domain and OMS. Note that you need to use a different GC Domain name than what you used earlier. For example I have used GCDOMAIN11 as the new domain name when my previous domain name was GCDOMAIN $OMS_ORACLE_HOME/bin/omsca new –AS_USERNAME weblogic –EM_DOMAIN_NAME GCDOMAIN11 –NM_USER nodemanager -nostart This command as shown below will prompt for a number of inputs like Admin Server hostname, port, password, etc. Verify if the defaults shown are correct by pressing enter or provide a new value STEP 9: Run Add-ON Configuration Assistant After this step run the following add-on configuration assistant. This was used in my case to configure the virtualization add-on $OMS_ORACLE_HOME/addonca -oui -omsonly -name vt -install gc STEP 10: Start the OMS Now start the OMS using $OMS_ORACLE_HOME/bin/emctl start oms In a multi-node setup like mine you would either have a software load balancer or DNS round robin (using a virtual host name that resolves to one of multiple OMS hostnames) being used for load balancing. Secure the OMS against the SLB or DNS virtual hostname using the following $ OMS_HOME/bin/emctl secure oms -host slb.example.com -secure_port 1159 -slb_port 1159 -slb_console_port 443 STEP 11: Configure the Agent From the $AGENT_ORACLE_HOME/bin run the ./agentca –f At this point you should have your OMS on node 1 fully re-covered. Clean up node 2 and use the normal Additional OMS installation process documented in the official installation guide to add the additional OMS on node 2 Summary It took us nearly a little over two days to completely recover the environment with some other non-EM related issues that hit us along the way as well. In the end a situation like this could have been completely avoided had the proper housekeeping and backup of the Enterprise Manager Deployment been done in the first place. This is going to a topic that we cover in the next post.   • Troubleshoot broken ZFS

    I have one zpool called tank in RaidZ1 with 5x1TB SATA HDDs. I'm using Ubuntu Server 11.10 Oneric, kernel 3.0.0-15-server. Installed ZFS from ppa also I'm using zfs-auto-snapshot. The ZFS file system when zfs module loaded to the kernel hangs my computer. Before it I created few new file systems: zfs create -V 10G tank/iscsi1 zfs create -V 10G tank/iscsi2 zfs create -V 10G tank/iscsi3 I shared them through iSCSI by /dev/tank/iscsiX path. And my computer started to hanging sometimes when I used tank/iscsiX by iSCSI, do not know why exactly. I switched off iSCSI and started to remove this file systems: zfs destroy tank/iscsi3 I'm also using zfs-auto-snapshot so I had snapshots and without -r key my command not destroying the FS. So I issued next command: zfs destroy tank/iscsi3 -r The tank/iscsi3 FS was clean and contain nothing - it was destroyed without an issue. But tank/iscsi2 and tank/iscsi1 contained a lot of information. I tried zfs destroy tank/iscsi2 -r After some time my computer hang out. I rebooted computer. It didn't boot very fast, HDDs starts working like a crazy making a lot of noise, after 15 minutes HDDs stopped go crazy and OS booted at last. All seems to be ok - tank/iscsi2 was destroyed. After file systems at the tank was accessible, zpool status showed no corruption. I issued new command: zfs destroy tank/iscsi1 -r Situation was repeated - after some time my computer hang out. But this time ZFS seams not to healed itself. After computer switched on it started to work: loading scripts and kernel modules, after zfs starting to work it hanging my computer. I need to recover else ZFS file systems which lying in the same zpool. Few month ago I backup OS to flash drive. Booting from backed-up OS and import have the same results - OS starts hanging. How to recover my data at ZFS tank?

  • Nexus 7 Possibly Bricked

    I have a 1st gen Nexus 7 (32GB). I used the steps at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Nexus7/Installation to successfully install Ubuntu 13.04 desktop onto the tablet. It was working fine and then I decided to upgrade to Ubuntu Touch. I booted the tablet into fast boot mode but the commands 'adb devices' and 'sudo fastboot devices' would not see the device. I am performing these steps from an Ubuntu 12.04 desktop PC. Prior to installing 13.04 the device was seen fine. I made the mistake of performing the 'Device factory reset' step from https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Touch/Install - Step 2. Now when I try to boot the device I get the following: mount: mounting /dev on /root/dev failed: no such file or directory mount: mounting /dev on /root/sys failed: no such file or directory mount: mounting /proc on /root/proc failed: no such file or directory Targe filesystem doesn't have requested /sbin/init. No init found. Try passing init= bootarg. BusyBox v1.20.2 (Ubuntu 1:1.20.0-0ubuntu1) built-in shell (ash) Enter help for a list of built-in commands. (initramfs) I have searched the web but every reference to this problem is from people who still have ADB access to the device so they can recover by flashing the tablet again. I can attach a keyboard to the USB port and access the BusyBox console but I don't know what steps to do to recover from my error. Any suggestions would be helpful. Thanks
