  • Launching my deployed my app gets "has stopped working" error. How do I debug this?

    I deployed a VB.Net app and ran it and I get 'AppName has stopped working" "Windows is checking for a solution to the problem" along with a Cancel button under Windows 7. Under XP I am only getting the option to Send the error report to Microsoft or not. There is no apparent way to hook into a debugger. I am not getting any exception data. I have put msgboxes at the very start of my code and they are not hit so it is failing before any of my code is even executing. I have checked all dependencies that I can think of. I developed the app on VS2008 Windows 7 and deploying to Windows 7 and WinXP. I need some advice - how do I debug this? Thanks, Brad

    I have a "sync" task that relies on several "sub-tasks", which include asynchronous network operations, but which all require access to a single NSManagedObjectContext. Due to the threading requirements of NSManagedObjectContexts, I need every one of these sub-tasks to execute on the same thread. Due to the amount of processing being done in some of these tasks, I need them to be on a background thread. At the moment, I'm launching a new thread by doing this in my singleton SyncEngine object's -init method: [self performSelectorInBackground:@selector(initializeSyncThread) withObject:nil]; The -initializeSyncThread method looks like this: - (void)initializeSyncThread { self.syncThread = [NSThread currentThread]; self.managedObjectContext = [(MyAppDelegate *)[UIApplication sharedApplication].delegate createManagedObjectContext]; NSRunLoop *runLoop = [NSRunLoop currentRunLoop]; [runLoop run]; } Is this the correct way to start up the NSRunLoop for this thread? Is there a better way to do it? The run loop only needs to handle 'performSelector' sources, and it (and its thread) should be around for the lifetime of the process. When it comes to setting up an NSAutoreleasePool, should I do this by using Run Loop Observers to create the autorelease pool and drain it after every run-through?

  • NSTimer freezes the app until it gets fired again?

    Hello all, I have a simple app with a button, UIImageView and a NSTimer. The timer is fired up every 5 seconds repeatedly to update the ImageView with a new image, while the button simply stops the timer and switches to another View. The problem is that when I press the button, nothing happens for a few seconds (until the timer fires up again). Is there a way to cause the button to stop the timer and do its job at any given time instead of between intervals of the timer? Thanks!

  • Why do AlarmManager broadcasts get cancelled when app gets killed?

    Ok so I have two BroadcastReceiver registered. When the app is closed they both fire at the appropriate times and do the appropriate things. If the app is closed then killed (say with an AppKiller), the receivers never receive their broadcasts, and nothing happens. Presumably the same thing happens if the parent app is killed due to low memory, so how do I ensure those broadcasts are fired/received. The API states that even if the app is killed it should fire, does anyone else have experience with this situation?   • Is there a way to log when a particular memory location gets written and by which function?

    I'm having a bug in my c++ program which happens very rarely but crashes my program. It's seems I have some buffer overflow problem or something similar. I find that these types of bug are most difficult to find. My program always crashes because of the same corrupted memory location. I'm wondering if there is some debugging tool which could detect when a particular memory location get written to and logs the function which does it. I'm using VLD (visual leak detector) for my memory leak hunting and it works great. It substitutes the original mallocs which its own and logs every allocation. I was wondering if there is something similar for memory? I know that something like that would cripple a program, but it could be really helpful.

  • Editing a Gridview row with drop-down lists gets too wide - how can I use popup panels instead?

    I have a series of GridViews in a Tab Panel - databound to a generic List of Business Objects. The columns in the Gridview are all similar to the following: <asp:TemplateField HeaderText="Company" SortExpression="Company.ShortName"> <ItemTemplate> <asp:Label ID="lblCompany" runat="server" Text='<%# Bind("Company.ShortName") %>'></asp:Label> </ItemTemplate> <EditItemTemplate> <asp:DropDownList ID="ddlCompany" runat="server"></asp:DropDownList> </EditItemTemplate> </asp:TemplateField> The GridView generates the "Edit" link at the beginning of the row, all the events fire ok. The problem is that the data is getting long. When in 'display mode', it's fine because the GridView control is smart enough to break some text into multiple lines (in particular Project, Title and Worker names can get pretty long). The problem come in editing mode. Drop-down lists DON'T break entries into multiple lines (for obvious reasons). Going into Edit ode on a row in the Gridview can make the Griview expand horizontally to twice the screen size (blowing through the width limits in the Master page and CSS but that's only a related problem). What I need is something like the ModalPopup - but trying to tie it to an ID in an EditItemTemplate gives me errors when the page renders (because the 'ddlXXXX' doesn't exist at the time). In addition I don't know how to dynamically populate the panel so that I can get a response from it (like the ID of the Company they selected). I'm also trying to avoid javascript and would like this to be a 'pure' aspx/code-behind solution (for simplicity's sake among others). All the examples I find are of Modal Popups with the panels pre-defined. Even if it (the popup panel) were something like a list of checkboxes, it could be databound to the SortedList I have ready to go and an OK/Cancel button combination to accept or ignore things. I'm just not sure of what goes where. I'm open to suggestions. Thanks in advance.   • PHP pathinfo gets fooled by url in quert string. Any workaround?

    I am working on a small function to take in a url and return a relative path based on where it resides itself. If the url contains a path in the query string, pathinfo returns incorrect results. This is demonstrated by the code below: $p = 'http://localhost/demos/image_editor/dir_adjuster.php?u=http://localhost/demos/some/dir/afile.txt'; $my_path_info = pathinfo($p); echo $p .   • How should I deal with persisting an Android WebView if my activity gets destroyed while showing ano

    Hi, I'm building an Android application that's based around an enhanced WebView (based on PhoneGap). I've enhanced the WebView so that from JavaScript running inside you can invoke the native contact picker to choose a phone number (which may be supplied by Facebook for example). The problem I have is that the native contact picker runs in an activity in another process and the Android docs say that while another activity is open my activity may get destroyed due to memory constraints. I haven't actually seen this happen in my application but if it did then I'm guessing my WebView's state would be destroyed and the code that was waiting for the picked contact would be terminated. It seems a bit crazy that the activity requesting a contact could be destroyed while the contact picker is open. Does anyone know if that does indeed happen? Is there a way to persist the state of the WebView if it does? Thanks, -Shaun

  • Codeigniter form action with slashes instead of normal GETs?

    Hey, so this is one of those questions that seems obvious, and I'm probably going to feel stupid, but here goes: I'm doing a CodeIgniter site with a search. Think of a Google type input, where you'd search for "white huskies." I have a search results page that takes a URI (MySite.com/dogs/white huskies), and takes the third part, and performs the search on that term. I'd like this to be done in the URI, and no by POST so my users can bookmark results. The problem I'm having is how to get that search button directed to Mysite.com/dogs/WHATEVER IS IN THE INPUT. How do I get the what is in the input part into the anchor href? I know I could do this with javascript, but I've heard it's bad practice to force people to have javascript for things this small.     I have a C# program that works correctly on xp and vista but it needs to be used on windows 7, I have not been able to come up with a solution, it appears that getpixels just doesn't work right on windows 7. I am getting one of the RGB values because I am dealing with tiff grayscale images. System.Drawing.Bitmap image;// this is in a separate class image = new Bitmap(destination);// this is in the constructor Color t = image.GetPixel(j, i); // this is in a separate function int s = t.R when I print s, for example, image(0,0), it is supposed to be 220, it will be 221 I am doing edge detection on an image and I have to go through the image pixel by pixel, I have run the exact same program on XP,Vista,windows7 and windows 7 got different values. It wouldn't let me post images at all and only one link. The first image is the original image, the second is the correct image, also the one I get with XP and Vista, the final image is the image when running the same program in Windows 7. There is not much of a visible difference but it matters for what I am doing. Thanks for the help, it seems that I am having a hard time explaining my problem.

    The subject line says it all. I'd also like to do this using pipes. I figured that I could use Get-ChildItem, Measure-Object and Where-Object, but Measure-Object doesn't like dates. Should I have a script block which loops through each item returned from Get-ChildItem and does a comparison to see if it's the most recent? I thought that there should be a handy PS cmdlet for that.

    I am currently troubleshooting a large and unwieldy GUI-based tool in Visual Studio, and was wondering whether there is any way to get some kind of notification (either by writing to the console or through a third-party tool) whenever any handled event occurs. This would make it a lot easier to track down what precisely is going on while I am interacting with this beast. Is there an 'on any event being handled' event I can handle, or some kind of add-in for VS which would make this possible?

    Possible Duplicate: If free() knows the length of my array, why can’t I ask for it in my own code? Searching around (including here at stackoverflow), I got that malloc() allocates an array and also creates a header to control the array info. In this header, there's also the array size. free() use such information to know how to deallocate that array. So, if the array size info is "there" (somewhere in the memory), why there isn't a function that returns an array size, looking for this at the array header? Or am I missing something?

I can store the chat in the database but my service runs on a free webhost which is limited, only 4 mysql connections allowed at a time which is almost nothing. I try to touch my database as least times as possible.
