  • Minimum permissions needed to create a user Home Folder in Windows Active Directory

    We would like the Help Desk to have the responsibility of creating User Home folders instead of our 2nd level support. The help desk global group is already an Account Operator, so in Active Directory they are able to edit all User Attributes just fine. The problem is figuring out the minimum level of permissions needed on the File Server to create the home share, with out giving them access to everyone home share. So if they open AD Users and Computer, open the properties for a user, and enter \home\users\%username% in the profile tab and then click OK, they get the following error. The \home\users\username home folder was not created because you do not have create access on the server. The user account has been updated with the new home folder value but you must create the directory manually after obtaining the required access right. Right now I have given the Helpdesk group Full Control on the root folder only (no files or subdirectories) The directory is actually created, but the permissions on the newly created folder only show administrators full control, and no permissions for the configured user account. It sure sounds like I'd have to make the helpdesk local admins on the file servers, which is what I'd like to avoid. Especially since the file servers are a large cluster hosting much much more than the entire orgs home share structure.

    Hi, What are the main guidelines to setting up a user account on a Linux machine for a web app? In my case it is a Rails application that does file management. First thing I can think of is to limit access rights to only the directories it needs. But how exactly should I go about this? Setup rights through a user group or a through the user's ownership of those directories. I have very little experience in user rights management. What else do I need to consider? I've heard of ACL's and SELinux, do I need to look into any of these to guaranty decent security for my simple web app? Any advice about this and anything not mentioned welcomed, Thanks, Max. I will be using Ubuntu.

  • domain user disabling screensaver

    I have the following situation: Due to security reasons the screensaver is activated after 10 minutes, and immediately locks the screen. There are GPOs preventing the user from changing the screensaver parameters and the background image. In order to bypass the background policy, some users are using bginfo The problem is that for some reason now the screensaver doesn't work anymore. The settings are still the same (10 minutes; locked to the user) and comparing snapshots of the registry before and after executing bginfo doesn't show any significant modification. Any hints? EDIT 1: Ok, i figured whats going on, but now i have another question. bginfo refreshes the user settings by reading HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop, which has ScreenSaveActive. If the user set it to 0, disables the screensaver. Why isnt HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\Control Panel\Desktop, which sets ScreenSaveActive to 1, being enforced? or if it is being enforced, where is bginfo storing the value 0, and how can it bypass the policy? EDIT 2: I also discovered that after setting any value to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop\ScreenSaveActive, it can be deleted and the last value will remain active. For some reason HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\Control Panel\Desktop\ScreenSaveActive value is not being enforced to the user.

  • Which revision control system for single user

    I'm looking to set up a revision control system with me as a single user. I'd like to have access (read and write) protected using SSL, little overhead, and preferrably a simple setup. I'm looking to do this on my own server, so I don't want to use the option of registering with some professional provider of such a service (I like having direct control over my data; also, I'd like to know how to set up something like that). As far as I'm aware, what kind of project I want to subject to revision control doesn't really matter, but just for completeness' sake, I'm planning on using this for Java project, some html/css/php stuff, and in the future possibly as a synchronizing tool for small data bases (ignore that later one if it doesn't fit in with the paradigm of revision control). My questions primarily arise from the fact that I only ever used Subversion from Eclipse, so I don't have thorough knowledge of what's out there, what fits better for which needs, etc. So far I've heard of Subversion, Git, Mercurial, but I'm open to any system that's widely used and well supported. My server is running Ubuntu 11.10. Which system should I choose, what are the advantages of the respective systems, and if you know of any particularly useful ones, are there tutorials regarding the setup of the system I should choose that you could recommend?

    I'm trying to run a service that uses $HOME and $USER environment variables. I could set them in service itself, but that would only be a temporary solution. Let's say I have a script test.sh with following content: echo $USER And I run it with start-stop-daemon to see my results: $ start-stop-daemon --start --exec `pwd`/test.sh --user guest --group guest --chuid -guest root Seems like it does not update environment, maybe that should be reported as a bug? I have found a nasty hacky solution, which only works (for unknown reason) on my this simple use case: $ start-stop-daemon --exec /usr/bin/sudo --start -- -u guest -i 'echo $USER' guest I'm sure someone else stumbled upon this, I'm interested in clean solution. $ start-stop-daemon --version start-stop-daemon 1.13.11+gentoo

  • Web Control added in .master control type not found in child page

    I have a Web Site project, and within it I have a user Web Control defined in an ascx file. The control is added to the Site.Master, and it shows up correctly on the page and everything is fine. I need to override some of the control's fields on one of the pages that derive from Site.Master. // In OnLoad: MyControlName control = (MyControlName) Page.Master.GetBaseMasterPage().FindControl("controlID")); The issue is that MyControlName doesn't register as a valid Type on the child page. If I add a second instance of the control to the child page directly, the above works as needed, but if the control isn't placed directly on the page, and instead is only defined in the master page, the type is undefined. The control is not in a namespace, and is defined within the project, so I don't know why it is having such an issue location the appropriate type. If I put a breakpoint in the OnLoad, the type listed for the control is ASP.my_control_name_ascx, but using that does not work either. Why can't the child class reference the correct type? Can I fix this? Thanks!

  • Access Control issue

    Ok this is stumping me mainly because of the lack of experience I have with access control. I have two folders I need to keep away from users. Payroll and Banking. I went into security and took away all the users. I made a new group called access granted and added it to both folders. I then gave full control to the group. I then added a few days to this group. I tested with partial success. I can only get into some folders and subfolders/files. I made sure I clicked on the option for all subfolders. This is my layout C:(folder) -- permissions granted to admin,access (full control) when I look at the problem files/folders no one has any permissions I don't even see the group or admin. what am I doing wrong. Like this one: Sometimes I also find these controls in virtual applications (yes I like extreme minimalism =P): But most of them are irritating, confusing or just wrong, and simple sliders could be used instead, making the UI much better. What are the advantages of circular sliders like the one in the screenshot above? And when do you use them? Thanks

  • User Profile objects are empty, even user logged-in properly?

    I use asp:Login control, user can login properly, but while checking user Profile information within LoggedIn event of Login control, all of the fields in the Profile objects are empty. Also, User.Identity.IsAuthenticated always returns false. But, all of these issue solved while navigating to another page. Why User.Identity.IsAuthenticated returns false, even user logged-in properly? And, is there any way to get user's profile information within LoggedIn event of Login control?

  • Are Fortran control characters (carriage control) still implemented in compilers?

    In the book Fortran 95/2003 for Scientists and Engineers, there is much talk given to the importance of recognizing that the first column in a format statement is reserved for control characters. I've also seen control characters referred to as carriage control on the internet. To avoid confusion, by control characters, I refer to the characters "1, a blank (i.e. \s), 0, and +" as having an effect on the vertical spacing of output when placed in the first column (character) of a FORMAT statement. Also, see this text-only web page written entirely in fixed-width typeface : Fortran carriage-control (because nothing screams accuracy and antiquity better than prose in monospaced font). I found this page and others like it to be not quite clear. According to Fortran 95/2003 for Scientists and Engineers, failure to recall that the first column is reserved for carriage control can lead to horrible unintended output. Paraphrasing Dave Barry, type the wrong character, and nuclear missiles get fired at Norway. However, when I attempt to adhere to this stern warning, I find that gfortran has no idea what I'm talking about. Allow me to illustrate my point with some example code. I am trying to print out the number Pi: PROGRAM test_format IMPLICIT NONE REAL :: PI = 2 * ACOS(0.0) WRITE (*, 100) PI WRITE (*, 200) PI WRITE (*, 300) PI 100 FORMAT ('1', "New page: ", F11.9) 200 FORMAT (' ', "Single Space: ", F11.9) 300 FORMAT ('0', "Double Space: ", F11.9) END PROGRAM test_format This is the output: 1New page: 3.141592741 Single Space: 3.141592741 0Double Space: 3.141592741 The "1" and "0" are not typos. It appears that gfortran is completely ignoring the control character column. My question, then, is this: Are control characters still implemented in standards compliant compilers or is gfortran simply not standards compliant? For clarity, here is the output of my gfortran -v Using built-in specs. The relationship show up, but if call User.relationships.friends it should run the friends() method, but its failing. Any ideas how i would do this? Thanks

    I'm working on creating a date/time user control in WPF using C# 2008. My first user control. I'm also using Matthew MacDonald's book, "Pro WPF in C# 2008". In that book he strongly recommended creating a user control using the WPF Custom Control Library project template; so I followed his suggestion. I've finished writing the code which would go into what I think of as the code-behind file. Now I'm ready to write the XAML. The only problem is, I just discovered there is no corresponding .xaml file? So, I don't get why using a WPF Custom Control Library project is better, or prefered, when writing a user control?

  • Error on clicking on Text to Speech tab in Speech properties in Control Panel

    When I click on Text to Speech tab in Speech properties I receive error: "C:\WINDOWS\system32\shell32.dll,Control_RunDLL "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Speech\sapi.cpl",Speech". There's a hotfix mentioned the the KBs in MS support.For that MS sent me a password protected file ; 170483_ENU_i386_zip.exe which contained two files : WindowsXP-KB838659-x86-ENU.EXE and WINDOWSXP-KB838659-X86-ENU-Symbols.EXE . The first one did not install as it said i already had it and the second one unpacked some dlls which i don't know how to use. I also tried Re-registering sapi.dll on Windows XP using C:\Windows\System32\regsvr32.exe Is there any other fix to this error?

  • Managing access to multiple linux system

    A searched for answers but have found nothing on here... Long story short: a non-profit organization is in dire need of modernizing its infrastructure. First thing is to find an alternatives to managing user accounts on a number of Linux hosts. We have 12 servers (both physical and virtual) and about 50 workstations. We have 500 potential users for these systems. The individual who built and maintained the systems over the years has retired. He wrote his own scripts to manage it all. It still works. No complaints there. However, a lot of the stuff is very manual and error-prone. Code is messy and after updates often needs to be tweaked. Worst part is there is little to no docs written. There are just a few ReadMe's and random notes which may or may not be relevant anymore. So maintenance has become a difficult task. Currently accounts are managed via /etc/passwd on each system. Updates are distributed via cron scripts to correct systems as accounts are added on the "main" server. Some users have to have access to all systems (like a sysadmin account), others need access to shared servers, while others may need access to workstations or only a subset of those. Is there a tool that can help us manage accounts that meets the following requirements? Preferably open source (i.e. free as budget is VERY limited) mainstream (i.e. maintained) preferably has LDAP integration or could be made to interface with LDAP or AD service for user authentication (will be needed in the near future to integrate accounts with other offices) user management (adding, expiring, removing, lockout, etc) allows to manage what systems (or group of systems) each user has access to - not all users are allowed on all systems support for user accounts that could have different homedirs and mounts available depending on what system they are logged into. For example sysadmin logged into "main" server has main://home/sysadmin/ as homedir and has all shared mounts sysadmin logged into staff workstations would have nas://user/s/sysadmin as homedir(different from above) and potentially limited set of mounts, a logged in client would have his/her homedir at different location and no shared mounts. If there is an easy management interface that would be awesome. And if this tool is cross-platform (Linux / MacOS / *nix), that will be a miracle! I have searched the web and so have found nothing suitable. We are open to any suggestions. Thank you. EDIT: This question has been incorrectly marked as a duplicate. The linked to answer only talks about having same homedirs on all systems, whereas we need to have different homedirs based on what system user is currently logged into(MULTIPLE homedirs).   • Execute background program in bash without job control

    I often execute GUI programs, such as firefox and evince from shell. If I type "firefox &", firefox is considered as a bash job, so "fg" will bring it to foreground and "hang" the shell. This becomes annoying when I have some background jobs such as vim already running. What I want is to launch firefox and dis-associate it with bash. Consider the following ideal case with my imaginary runbg: $ vim foo.tex ctrl+z and vim is job 1 $ pdflatex foo $ runbg evince foo.pdf evince runs in background and I get me bash prompt back $ fg vim goes foreground Is there any way to do this using existing program? If no, I will write my own runbg.

  • How do I delete or modify Default User's default printer?

    I have some computers that I set up a couple years ago by creating a user account, setting it up the way I wanted, and copying that user's directory over Default User's directory. Pretty simple stuff. One of the things that I did was to add a printer and set it as the default. Straightforward, or so I thought. Things have changed, and that printer has been removed and replaced with a different printer. I deleted the old printer's object and added the new one. Now every time a new user logs in, their profile gets copied from Default User, and they get the old printer as their default. This re-adds the old printer object to the system. Now every user can see the old printer's object again. I want to permanently delete Default User's default printer. How?

I'd like to be able to connect into the XP machine from the Mac over VNC, but not through the Web method, where performance seems to be a bit iffy. I've done some research, and it seems everyone is interested in the XP-Mac connection, where I'm looking to go in the other direction.
