• How to best config my PC. 2 small SDDs and a 1TB conventional drive

  I just got a new PC. It has 3 drives C Drive: 80GB SDD Drive P Drive: 120GB SDD (for core programs) D Drive: 1TB SDD (for data and other) I have an MSDN subscription and I am the type of person that loves to install tons of software to check it out. I am very worried that installation programs are forcing me to place a large amount of files on the small C drive. I fear that I will quickly run out of space on my C drive while having ample space on my TB drive. What would you do in my shoes? I didn't select this PC or set the config up. I am wishing that the 120 SSD was my C, to give me a little more room to grow. I guess there are no magic solutions here but I am just looking for your general thoughts

• Is it possible to have zsh+keychain+tmux not ask for keys?

  I'm using tmux and zsh, and I've recently been learning about ssh-agent and keychain. From the manpage for zsh, it says that it will source .zlogin only if the shell is, well, a login shell. Following advice I read, I stuck keychain --clear in my .zlogin, which worked perfectly. When I logged into the box I had to unlock my key. However, each time I create a new window in tmux, it clears/makes me re-add my key. This is a little annoying... but I can understand it if, in fact, each new tmux window is a login window. I haven't been able to find much help outside of the manpages on this topic. So is each new tmux window a login shell, or is there any way that I can make it not clear my keys only when I create a tmux window?

• cpu usage nearly 100 constantly windows xp sp3

  When running some heavy applications like games or virtual box for some time.. the cpu usage is normal for some 15 mins and then suddently cpu usage increases. even after i quit the heavy apps and when i start some other apps, the cpu usage of the new opened application is also very high.. this continues until i reboot the system. There is single particular process occupy more cpu. All the processes cpu usage is little high than normal.. Any solutions?

• Strange Intermittent Background Sound in Windows 7

  Ok, this is very strange. Recently, i noticed that every 10-15 seconds, there would be this faint, annoying duh-dum sound coming out of my speakers. (hard to describe. sounds somewhat like the sound windows makes when you unplug a USB device, but not as pronounced and much quieter). I closed every app and ended as many processes as I could, but the sound persists. I look at the volume mixer and sure enough, when the sound occurs, there is a little spike in the level under "System Sounds". I haven't installed any hardware or software in the last several weeks. This started recently - completely out of the blue. Does anyone have any insight?

• Mail sending program & exchange server

  Hi, I have been asked to send about 6500 e-mails to addresses in a member database. I have written the program, that sends and reports the ones that couldn't send etc. But my concern is that this program will just call smtpclient.Send(); and I don't know what happens if 6000 mails are in the queue. Server is MS Exchange as I have been told. Note: I am planning to send them, say 500 by 500. But what if an exception occurs on the Exchange server at 120... then what happens to the other ones.. I will appreciate little insight to the subject. Thanks in advance.

  I'm wondering if DDOS attacks to PBX or telecommunications systems is possibe real. There are DDOs attacks to web servers, which mostly give them so much concurrent loads or connections that service get unavailable. Many government or non-profit organizations that suffered this kind of attacks, eventually could choose to shutdown their web server and that's it, waiting for these attacks to end. For a DDOs attacks to PBX, I imagine that it would result in telephones getting busy or ringing all the time unstoppably. This kind of attack could really damage any kind organization. Is it possible to do that or are we just in the beginnings?

• Reverse DNS for two ADs in the same subnet

  I currently have two separate AD forests that exist within the same subnet. The two forests have independent copies of the reverse lookup zone for that subnet. Example: Domain A DC1: 10.1.1.1/24 Domain A DC2: 10.1.1.2/24 Domain A AppServer1:10.1.1.3/24 Domain B DC1: 10.1.1.11/24 Domain B DC2: 10.1.1.12/24 Domain B Appserver1:10.1.1.13/24 What I'm after, is a configuration that allows this reverse zone to be shared between them so that both sets of DNS servers can make updates to the zone. This kind of thing is a little far from my everday work, so a kick in the right direction is a welcome suggestion as well. Decoupling one AD into new segments is a possibility I'm open to but would like to avoid if possible. If there is a DNS related solution I'd prefer that.

• Accessing WindowsXP shared printer from macbook?

  My new printer is setup on WindowsXP, it works and it is configured as a shared printer. I then setup a printer from Mac OSX 10.6.3 using the approved driver from the setup CD. I browsed for the printer via the network. When I send a test page, it queues, but never prints. Its as if the driver thinks the printer is local to the mac and just never finishes printing. THe configuration shows as: smb://dragoneye/CanonMP2 Where dragoneye is the name of the Windows XP server and the CanonMP2 is the little multi-purpose printer. My other Windows' CPU can setup and print. Is this a known problem or am I missing a setting??

• How can I configure Adobe Help so it doesn't chatter so much with Adobe's domain?

  Adobe Help that came with Creative Suite 5 and/or Flash Builder Pro is constantly creating network traffic with an Adobe site, www.wip4.adobe.com In the Adobe Help application Preferences, I find that I can change the settings so that I must manually download updates, but apparently the application still likes to call home and chatter non-stop with www.wip4.adobe.com. I could use something like Little Snitch to block all this spyware-like behavior, but I'd really prefer to just change the application's behavior. Is there a hidden setting or configuration file to adjust this behavior to something more appropriate and polite?

I'm ok giving mogrify its settings but I don't complete understand how to tell the script to go iterate each folder to run the mogrify command.

• Can remote LogMeIn Hamachi users access our local LAN?

  Unknown to me, one of the kids has installed LogMeIn Hamachi on his PC so that he can access and play on his pal's Minecraft server, and vice versa. One of the things I did was disable the Client for Microsoft Networks and File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks on the Hamachi NIC in Windows 7's Network Connections. However, my lack of fu when it comes to these types of services is leaving me feeling a little uncomfortable about him using this. Is there anything I should be worried about here? For example, can his friends access our local LAN (which has a number of NAS boxes with unsecured shares) and get up to no good?

• Sharing internet connection with WDS

  Is it possible to share an internet connection through WDS? I'm on the very edge of a wireless network, the spot that I'm in maintains a stable 22% according to XP with the help of a parabolic reflector crafted from a cheap pie tin. I was thinking I could grab another wireless router, use WDS to bridge the this router with the other one and share the 'net connection through it thus giving me a little bit more freedom but when I tried it it didn't work. WDS looks like it bridged the networks just fine, but I couldn't access anything on the internet. Do I need to do anything special or is this just not possible?

• Blue screen MEMORY_MANAGEMENT on Windows 7 Enterprise

  I'm running a machine (MSI GT 70) with 32 GB ram as a mobile server. It seems that at random points in time it will BSOD with as message MEMORY_MANAGEMENT. So the first thing I did was do several memtests, but they did not give away any defective modules. I'm a bit clueless at the moment as it just seems to happen at random points in time giving me little or no indication of what might be wrong. I opened up the dumps with BSODviewer, they just seem to point to the windows kernel. I tried reinstalling Windows but the behavior remains the same.

• Bound external Cisco CIGESM ports to a specific BladeServer

  We have an IBM BladeCenter with 14 blade servers and one external Cisco CIGESM for Ethernet connectivity. Since this hardware is a little old, we will use it for other services, and we want to run a pfSense instance on one of the blades. It's just an Firewall Appliance, but it needs two network interfaces: one for the WAN and the other one for LAN access. Our architecture works on top of static routes, we don't use NAT, so we got the WAN IP in one interface routing to the another one. The main problem is how to plug the WAN cable in one of the four external ports and make it exclusive to the blade server containing the firewall. And we also need an exit port that goes through a 3COM 4200G switch that makes the internal routing and VLAN separation. Thanks in advance

• print job doesn't go to print queue

  I have two printers hooked up to my intel imac. I am having a printing error. It seems that whenever i try to print (a simple text doc) I am unable to get the print job to go to print queue with one of my printers. I have a HP c7280 and a HP c3100. I am able to get one working properly, but the other doesn't seem to allow it to go to the print queue. I have switched usb cables (with the printer that I know works) and both printers are recognized by the computer in the printer preferences pane. I've tried reseting the printer system in the printer setup utility.. reloaded the drivers from HP.. etc. If anyone has a suggestion or could point me to a little help i'd be VERY grateful Best Regards.. • Any Suggestions on How to Soup Up/ Mod a MacBook Pro 13"?

  So I've got a mid-2009 MacBook Pro 13". Integrated GPU so not a games machine but fast enough for doing .Net development in VMs. I love the little thing and wanted to give it a Christmas present so thought I'd mod it up a bit and give it a boost. I'm probably going to go for a 500GB Seagate Momentus XT hybrid drive rather than full-on SSD (I need 500GB space) but was wondering if there are any other mods/tweaks people could suggest? I saw something online about swapping a HDD for the DVD drive and wondered if anyone had tried this or similarly drastic mods to the smallest of the MBPs. Cheers.

  Where can I find local dedicated hosting space for my own hardware? I know I can rent dedicated hosting from various companies online, but usually I think that means I'm renting their hardware too. I just need a space with a network connection and a power outlet. That's it. How much would this cost? What would I search for? Is it available easily? Or would it only be the sort of thing huge companies would do? I'm in the greater NYC area. It's for a project I'm working on, but the thing's loud and annoying. I'd be willing to pay a little to get it out of sight and out of mind. I don't even care too much about the quality of the network connection. I'd rather not rent other people's hardware cause it probably would cost a fortune to rent a machine like this (tons of ram).

  What is the best, most foolproof way of getting nice font rendering in Linux? Currently, I am experiencing thin, ugly fonts (shown below). I have wasted too much time tweaking fonts.conf, and I have yet to find a decent combination. I am running Debian 6.0 with no desktop environment (just Openbox for a window manager) in a VM on a Macbook Pro (OS X 10.7.4).   Hello, I'm planing to build a little linux homeserver. It will mainly be used for storage and maybe as an media pc. I plan to build a software raid5 with 4 1.5TB or 2TB hard drives. I already decided to use the Western Digital Caviar Green 1.5 TB drive, but then I read about some problems with the WD green series about many drives failing and that they are not recommended for raid anyway. Of course, I couldn't find much facts on the issues so I thought I just ask here ;-) What hard drives would you recommended for a software raid5 setup? As I only need it for storage, the whole thing doesn't have to be too fast. So I prefer a cheap price and silence to great performance.

  hello the point is, if i'm logged in (and as almost every windows user, i've got an admin-account), and someone comes across my not locked pc, it is possible to change my password the pro-way through using: net user Admin %NEW_PASSWD% what can i do to prevent that, besides not being logged in as admin. i once saw a way, where the 'net user' command was substituted by a .bat file. so if you call 'net user Admin ...', it runs this .bat-file instead, which locks the notebook immediately. problem is, i honestly don't know how i could let windows substitute eg net.exe with a .bat-file. (too little windows knowledge) do you know any way how to do it? i'd appreciate it.

Then I have an application deployed on heroku, and it works like a charm, if not for one little thing. The app takes about 30 seconds to start up and heroku has the annoying habit of killing dyno's if they don't get traffic. My client is using the application for demo purposes now, so the load is extremely low and intermittent. I'm looking for a solution that is preferably: cost effective can be applied to multiple apps simultaneously What is the best way to avoid having the first request taking 30 seconds?

• Windows7 - Mouse not working, all windows + tray act like inactive

  I have this problem for two days now. First when it happened, logging out and back in helped, but now this occurs right after booting. I cannot activate any window by clicking into it, and also cannot minimalise, or close it with mouse. In few applications I cannot even interact with them with mouse (e.g. clicking on links in browser). I can scroll an active window with the trackball, and sometimes everything works normally for a little while. Everything works fine, when I use keyboard for this, I can resize, move, close windows with keyboard shortcuts, etc. I ran a complete Avast! scan, but it found nothing important. Also event viewer did not show any relevant errors. Here's a log from HijackThis if it helps anything.

  Trying to access my Mac from a Windows 7 computer, I fail with the infamous error 86 incorrect password. Now this appears to be a well-known problem with countless threads on the internet giving as many "solutions" as there are discussion threads about it (mostly ranging from installing third-party commercial samba servers, to switching to some other protocol, to compiling a plain-vanilla Samba installation - the latter which I will probably do when I give up this :) ) I am stubborn, and I believe there must be some problem here that can be solved or worked around, but there is surprisingly little detail about this problem. It appears to have something to do with a mismatch of authentication methods. • Remote desktop from internet to windows 7 box via linksys router

  Hi everyone, I have a linksys wrt54g router and a windows 7 box at home I'd like to be able to remote desktop into from work. Would it be possible for someone to point me in the right direction on what I need to configure to get this working, both on the router and on the win 7 box?
