• Graphics driver for ubuntu on dell latitude XT

  Hi, we have a laptop (dell latitude xt) on our company, and we would like to install ubuntu on it. windows 7 works fine out of the box, so the hardware is fine. since this laptop has a touchscreen we just installed ubuntu 10.10 netbook edition 32x. How should I configure virtualbox/guest so that the VPN connection would be visible on guest? I already tried NAT and bridged network settings. With both of these options I get only normal internet connection to work, but sites requiring VPN don't work on guest, only on host.

  I have an HP Compaq nc8230 that has an annoying little problem with it's audio devices in Ubuntu 9.1. When I have the headphones plugged in, the audio continues to play simultaneously through the speakers no matter what. I'm not sure what kind of sound card this computer has, but in WIndows XP, Vista, 7 and OSx86 I didn't have this problem. I've tried using 3 different headphones and it didn't change anything. Please help.

  In the update manager of ubuntu I see several libraries marked with New Install. I don't know what is the benefit I can get from that New Install? What if I just want a normal upgrade, not a New Install?   Can anyone recommend a good, free Ubuntu Server VMWare Image (or Virtual Appliance, as they call them)? I have looked on the VMWare VAM and there are literally hundreds to choose from. I am looking for something that can with very minimal effort serve as a development platform for LAMP applications (so it should have all of those installed, plus things like PhpMyAdmin). Bonus points if there is some way to create new Virtual Hosts (for developing and testing new sites) on Apache without having to go digging around conf files and guessing on the sytax.

• how to force an illegal netmask in ubuntu

  I want to force a netmask on my Ubuntu machine. For example, I want 11.0.0.1 to get a netmask of 255.255.255.0 I tried editing /etc/network/interfaces and I forced the desired netmask, but as soon as I restarted the interfaces it changed it back to the default value. When I used ifconfig the netmask that I gave survived the interface restart but it was reset as soon as I rebooted the machine. Is there a way to force an "illegal" netmask on an interface?
