• How can a 1Gb Java heap on a 64bit machine use 3Gb of VIRT space?

  I run the same process on a 32bit machine as on a 64bit machine with the same memory VM settings (-Xms1024m -Xmx1024m) and similar VM version (1.6.0_05 vs 1.6.0_16). However the virtual space used by the 64bit machine (as shown in top under "VIRT") is almost three times as big as that in 32bit! I know 64bit VMs will use a little more memory for the larger references, but how can it be three times as big? Am I reading VIRT in top incorrectly? Full data shown below, showing top and then the result of jmap -heap, first for 64bit, then for 32bit. • UIView drawing problem.

  Hi everyone, I have this big problem that i dont know how to fix. I have a UIView that i want to draw a scrolling background on. I am using NSTimer to update 30 frames per second but it seems to redraw one frame every 8 seconds. I am calling [self setNeedsDisplay] but it has no effect. I cant figure out why this is happening, does anyone have any tips? Thanks for your time.

• How do I draw an ESB on a SoaML diagram?

  I've recently had to draw some architectural diagrams that feature the use of an Enterprise Service Bus. The ESB is critical, so everyone wants it to show up on the diagram. But since it's the center of what everything is connected to, it really of gets in the way. I settled on trying to use SoaML. I color-coded the request points blue and service points green, to help then stand out. The text names on the ports give you a sense of what talks to what, and it's incredibly obvious that everything goes through the ESB. Can anyone comment on my approach? Any suggestions on something better?

  I have this order-by problem I canot crack. I select from my table like this: SELECT * FROM 'sidemodules' WHERE name = 'module1' OR name = 'module2' OR 'name3' Which returns me the modules I want. But the modules lie the table, say in this order: module3 module1 module2 And they are returned to me in this order. How can I get them to display in order AS IN THE WHERE CLAUSE (1,2,3) ?   My app is forced to use a 3rd party module which will blue-screen Windows if two instances are started at the same time on the same machine. To work around the issue, my C# app has a mutex: static Mutex mutex = new Mutex(true, "{MyApp_b9d19f99-b83e-4755-9b11-d204dbd6d096}"); And I check if it's present - and if so I show an error message and close the app: bool IsAnotherInstanceRunning() { if (mutex.WaitOne(TimeSpan.Zero, true)) return (true); else return (false); } The problem is if two users can log in and open the application at the same time, and IsAnotherInstanceRunning() will return false. How do I get around this?

• ImageMagick and Grails not working

  I'm trying to have ImageMagick run from grails to convert some images when I run the command to make an image nothing happens. I get no errors, no information returned nothing at all. I've tried running other commands like touch and ps ux just to see if they work and they all work fine. It just seems like the imagemagick commands are getting lost and I''m not sure what to do. Here is the code I've been working with. String command = CH.config.ImageMagickPath + "/convert -size 40x20 xc:red xc:blue -append -rotate 90 append_rotate.gif" println command command.execute() CH.config.ImageMagickPath is set up to where imagemagick/bin is. I've taken what is shown in println command and run it in a terminal and it works fine. Is there any reason why I can't get IM to work from grails?

  Imagine a photo, with the face of a building marked out. Its given that the face of the building is a rectangle, with 90 degree corners. However, because its a photo, perspective will be involved and the parallel edges of the face will converge on the horizon. With such a rectangle, is it possible to calculate the angle in 2D of the edges of a face that is 90 degrees to it? In the image below, the blue is the face marked on the photo, and I'm wondering how to calculate the 2D vector of the red lines of the other face:

• flex List Size not updating when itemRenderer resizes itself

  I've got a list with a custom itemRenderer that's just a rectangle of specific size. The list <s:List id="thelist" width="100%" dataProvider="{thelistdata}" itemRenderer="ListItem" borderVisible="true" /> Note the list's border is visible to help with debugging The itemRenderer <s:Rect id="box" width="50" height="50"> <s:fill> <s:SolidColor color="blue"/> </s:fill> </s:Rect> When the itemRenderer receives an event, it changes its size to half box.width = 25; box.height = 25; I see the itemRenderers are resizing themselves correctly, but the list itself stays the same size and the border stays where it is. Anyone knows how to fix this bug. Basically the list should refresh its size too to fit the smaller boxes.
