    How should I be using color in my application? I have over a 100 different forms (windows) in my application, and the default windows grey seems like a bad choice to me. One school of thought says pick one neutral color, and use the same one everywhere. Another school of thought says pick a set of neutral colors, and use them same ones within a group of form (e.g., shipping screens might be light green, receiving screens light orange, user administration screens light blue, etc.). The final school of thought says make every form different. We've got millions of colors, why not use them? What should I do and why?

  • [IE] Remove the complete styling of an HTML button/submit

    Is there a way of completely removing the styling of a button in Internet Explorer? I use a css sprite for my button, and everything looks ok. But when I click the button, it moves to the top a little, it makes it look out of shape. Is there a css click state, or mousedown? I don't know what triggers that state. I know it's not a really big deal, but sometimes it's the small things that matter.

    Hi How do I know how many seconds it will be until a php session expires? I'm building a web application where users might spend a lot of time typing into big text fields, but for security reasons I still want sessions to time out after a reasonably short period. I want to warn them if their session is about to expire so they can save or take some other action to keep it alive. Any tips? thanks!

  • Change color of a table cell using javascript using dropdown menu

    I'd like to use some javascript code to change the background color of a single cell within a table. I have some code below which allows me to change the page background color. This is similar in concept to what I would like to do, but I would really like to be able to change just one cell...not the whole page. I have thought about making the rest of the cell borders and background colors white, leaving the cell I want to manipulate transparent, but I think this probably a brute force method that will cause me trouble down the road. Does anyone have any advice to do this with javascript?     I want to use wxHaskell on OS X (Snow Leopard, MacBook Pro). I was able to install the library successfully and the script below: module Main where import Graphics.UI.WX main :: IO () main = start hello hello :: IO () hello = do f <- frame [text := "Hello!"] quit <- button f [text := "Quit", on command := close f] set f [layout := widget quit] does result in a window being displayed with a single button, as specified. However, nothing happens when I click the button - I don't even get the visual response of the button turning blue to indicate that it's been depressed (haha, no pun intended). I've heard that you have to run a package called "macosx-app" on wxHaskell binaries to get them to run, but I can't find this anywhere. It's not on my machine or (as far as I can tell) in the WX or wxHaskell distros. Anyone know what I need to do to get this to work?

    I have big trouble with file uploads with php. My own tests are successful but my colleague is telling me that he cannot update "larger" (ca. 5mb) files. Phpinfo says: - max_execution_time 30 - memory_limit 32 Mb - post_max_size 8 Mb - upload_max_filesize 10 Mb Is it better to use FTP? The problem is that I cannot change these settings at my webhoster.

    I'm trying to figure out the best way to represent some data. It basically follows the form Manufacturer.Product.Attribute = Value. Something like: Acme.*.MinimumPrice = 100 Acme.ProductA.MinimumPrice = 50 Acme.ProductB.MinimumPrice = 60 Acme.ProductC.DefaultColor = Blue So the minimum price across all Acme products is 100 except in the case of product A and B. I want to store this data in C# and have some function where GetValue("Acme.ProductC.MinimumPrice") returns 100 but GetValue("Acme.ProductA.MinimumPrice") return 50. I'm not sure how to best represent the data. Is there a clean way to code this in C#?

    I'm having trouble with what I think is a basic R task. Here's my sample dataframe named 'b' Winner Color Size Tom Yellow Med Jerry Yellow Lar Jane Blue Med where items in the Winner column are factors. I'm trying to change "Tom" in the dataframe to "Tom LLC" and I can't get it done. Here's what I tried: Simple way: b$winner[b$winner=='Tom'] = as.factor('Tom LLC') but that failed with "invalid factor level, NAs generated" Next I tried a more advanced route: name_reset = function (x, y, z) { if (x$winner == y) {x$winner = z} } b = adply(b,1,name_reset,'Tom','Tom LLC') but that failed with "Error in list_to_dataframe(res, attr(.data, "split_labels")) : Results are not equal lengths" I feel I'm missing something basic.     I build some dlls to be used in a big application, and have a team working in the dlls heart of the application and another team working in the gui, but i am having a problems in the deployment of the dll's when a change is done, because the gui team needs or copy the new dll to the project folder, or delete the old reference and add the new one. Is there a best practice to deal with this problem? I am using Visual Studio 2008 and devoloping int VB and C# Thanks !!!

I'm doing this through an html file containing ` div { color:blue; } span { color:red; } var x; $.get("return.php", function(data){ x = data; }) function showAlert() {alert(x);} $(document).ready(function(){ alert(x); }); ` When the button is clicked it retrieves and displays the code fine, but on the page loading, it displays "undefined" instead of the data in return.php. Any solutions?

    I read a lot, also here, but couldn't find a simple way to do it: In objective c - I have a big UIImage and a small UIImageView. I want to programmatically shrink the content of a UIImage just enough to fit the smaller dimension within the UIImageView. The larger dimension will be cropped, and the result will be the maximum I can get from an image without changing the proportion. can you please help me?

    How is it possible to execute a direct SQL command to an ADO.NET connected database? I want to send a DBCC SHRINKDATABASE to the SQL server, to compress the current datafile after a big deletion process. The function ObjectContext::CreateQuery returns a parser error after the DBCC command. Is there any other way to shrink the database file, or another way to send the SQL command directly to the SQL Server?

    I inherited a mysql database that has a table with columns like this: object_id, property, value It holds data like this: 1,first_name,Jane 1,last_name,Doe 1,age,10 1,color,red 2,first_name,Mike 2,last_name,Smith 2,age,20 2,color,blue 3,first_name,John 3,last_name,Doe 3,age,20 3,color,red ... Basically what I want to do is treat this table as a regular table. How would I get the id numbers (or all properties) of a person who is age 20 sorted by last and than first name? So far I have: SELECT object_id FROM table WHERE property = 'age' AND value = '20' union SELECT object_id FROM table WHERE property = 'color' AND value = 'red' But I'm not sure how to go about ordering the data.
