• Best Practice for creating Web Services

  To preface I am new to web development. I am looking at creating a core set of RESTful web services around a valuable document library of sorts (initial CRUD abilities). In doing so I am theoretically creating a perfectly re-usable and scalable back-end to be used by unanticipated applications in the future. My question centers around the best practice for doing this. My initial requirement has me also creating a unique front end. Would I make the front end and back end completely separate projects to enhance the re-usability. It would increase overhead. Looking at using GWT, Restlet, and JEE technology stack if this influences the setup at all.

• Minimizing Java Thread Context Switching Overhead

  I have a Java application running on Sun 1.6 32-bit VM/Solaris 10 (x86)/Nahelem 8-core(2 threads per core). A specific usecase in the application is to respond to some external message. In my performance test environment, when I prepare and send the response in the same thread that receives the external input, I get about 50 us advantage than when I hand off the message to a separate thread to send the response. I use a ThreadPoolExecutor with a SynchronousQueue to do the handoff. In your experience what is the acceptable delay between scheduling a task to a thread pool and it getting picked up for execution? What ideas had worked for you in the past to try improve this?

• What are the best settings of the H2 database for high concurrency?

  There are a lot of settings that can be used in H2 database. AUTO_SERVER, MVCC, LOCK_MODE, FILE_LOCK and MULTI_THREADED. I wonder what combination works best for high concurrency setup e.g. one thread is doing INSERTs and another connection does some UPDATEs and SELECTs? I tried MVCC=TRUE;LOCK_MODE=3lFILE_LOCK=NO but whenever I do some UPDATEs in one connection, the other connection does not see it even though I commit it. By the way the connections are from different processes e.g. separate program.

• UITableView performance degrading after adding subviews on cell iphone sdk

  Hi all, In my application, I'm adding a label and two buttons on cell of UItableView [I have not created a separate cell class]. I'm adding these to cell and not cell.contentview. After I run my application on IPhone, the tableview cell rendering after I move the cells up-down, is very jerky. Is it because I'm not adding the views on cell.contentView or because I've not created a custom class for cell? Can anybody please help? Thanks in advance.

• Zend Framework Autoloader question.

  In zend framework I register my namespace like this (in application.php): 'autoloaderNamespaces' => array( 'Cms_' ) And after this - I'd expect that Zend would always check that path in addition to Zend and ZendX paths if unknown class is called. But for some reason this doesn't work with for example view helpers. I still have to register a separate path for my view helpers even though view helper scripts are named according to Zend coding standards and are located in: Cms/View/Helper/ And this is how I register helper path in config file: view' => array( 'charset' => 'UTF-8', 'doctype' => 'XHTML1_TRANSITIONAL', 'helperPath' => array( 'Cms_View_Helper_' => 'Cms/View/Helper' ) ), So - I'm not sure why I have to register "Cms" namespace twice first through 'autoloaderNamespaces' and then through View "helperPath"? Shouldn't Cms namespace include Cms/View/Helper namespace? can someone plz clarify this:)

• Problems adding static library QT project

  I have problems adding a static library to my Qt project. I have two project one is my static library and the other one is a Qt GUI project. As I add all classes to my GUI project as c++ or header files everything works just fine but I want this to be in a separate library. When I select the option to add a library I check External library then I select the .a file I have build and the folder where my header files can be found because I am working on a Mac I select Mac as the target platform. • Getting my webapp to be database agnostic with Hibernate...

  So the ultimate in scope-creep came in the other day: since we're using Hibernate, could we make our webapp run on Oracle as well as MySQL, interchangably? I thought this would be a simple case of changing hibernate.cfg.xml so that instead of explicity stating MySQL-specific options, it would reference a JNDI datasource, allowing the application to build regardless of the database we intend to deploy to. Then changing to a different database would simply mean changing the separate datasource configuration in JBoss, Jetty, WebLogic etc. Is this realistic? Well, I got as far as setting that up in Jetty, but What's tripping me up right now is error about the hibernate.dialect not having been set in hibernate.cfg.xml. But If I set the dialect there, then my app is still going to be built in either MySQL or Oracle flavours, which is not really what I want. Either I'm trying to attempt the impossible or I've missed something fundamentally obvious... anyone else had a similar problem (and subsequent solution/workaround)?

  I currently have a project that uses various DB access technologies mainly for showcasing or for demos. Currently we have: Namespace App.Data (App.Data.dll) Folder NHibernate Folder EntityFramework Folder LinqToSql The above structure is ok as we only use Sql Server as the DB. But going forward we will be including Oracle, MySql etc. So what would be a better structure with this in mind? • P-invoke call fails if too much memory is assigned beforehand

  I've got a p-invoke call to an unmanaged DLL that was failing in my WPF app but not in a simple, starter WPF app. I tried to figure out what the problem was but eventually came to the conclusion that if I assign too much memory before making the call, the call fails. I had two separate blocks of code, both of which would succeed on their own, but that would cause failure if both were run. (They had nothing to do with what the p-invoke call is trying to do). What kind of issues in the unmanaged library would cause such an issue? I thought that the managed and unmanaged heaps were supposed to be automatically separated. The crash as far as I can tell is happening in a dynamically loaded secondary DLL from the one p-invoked into. Could that have something to do with it?

  hi in my application i have 20 icons(bitmap fields) on the home screen When i click on any icon an HTTP request is made in a separate thread. I have used invoke later method wherever necessary to take care of multi-threading problems. But still the number of threads goes beyond 16 and an error pops up indicating too many threads error and applications needs to be restarted!! can anybody tell me how to destroy these threads when they are no longer in use. I don't understand why they don't destroy on their own as usually they do.

  Hi, i have the following situation, i have a Reporting layer(stand alone) in asp.net application(NOT website, this means NO App_Code folder exists), and i want just to create Object Data Source to take an Object in a separate layer(lets say from Data Access Layer), and then to use that Object Data Source to create a report, i have spent my whole day working around that, tons of work around's and articles on the web, but does not mention what i really want to do, any answer is appriciated... just to make things more clear here, assume the following: i have a solution with the follwoing layers, UI Reporting(has NO Employees object) just a reference Business Logic Data Access Layer(Employees--GetEmployees(), all i need is as mentioned above, i want to create Object Data Source from Reporting layer, to take Employee object from DAL, and then use it's GetEmployees method to be added to report, i think its more clear now, since also Reporting layer has NO App_Code folder.

  With normal functions, the declaration and definition are often separated across multiple files like so: // Foo.h namespace Foo { void Bar(); } . // Foo.cpp #include "Foo.h" void Foo::Bar() { cout << "Inside function." << endl; } It is my understanding that this cannot be done with templates. The declaration and definition must not be separate because the appropriate form of the template is created "on-demand" when needed. So, how and where are templates typically defined in a multiple-file project like this? My intuition is that it would be in Foo.cpp because that's where the "meat" of functions normally is, but on the other hand it's the header file that's going to be included.

• LINQ to SQL for tables across databases. Or View?

  I have a Message table and a User table. Both are in separate databases. There is a userID in the Message table that is used to join to the User table to find things like userName. How can I create this in LINQ to SQL? I can't seem to do a cross database join. Should I create a View in the database and use that instead? Will that work? What will happen to CRUD against it? E.g. if I delete a message - surely it won't delete the user? I'd imagine it would throw an error. What to do? I can't move the tables into the same database!

  Hello, I'd like to get the value of the id column for an object just after I've created it. But I don't want to run another query for that. My book for beginner (SQL Server 2008 for Dummies) says that there are 2 tables (inserted and deleted) that hold the last row(s) that have been inserted, updated, or deleted. Unfortunately, only Triggers (says the book) can access those tables. But, if I use triggers, they will go off each time I "insert" a row even when I don't need them that functionality. Can I obtain the same effect with a Store Procedure (without having to run a separate query?) • How does the VS XAML designer know what to auto-populate certain values with?

  <Button Name="MyButton" Content="Test" FontStyle="Italic" /> In the above XAML definition of a button, the FontStyle property is set to Italic. The designer is somehow able to populate a list for me to choose from when I hit the = sign. How is this achieved? Before you answer, consider that the FontStyle property is, appropriately enough, of type FontStyle (which is a struct). It's not an enumeration, which would be trivial for VS to list out at design time, so how are the valid list of options chosen to be displayed? There is also a completely separate FontStyles class which contains three static fields, Italic, Normal, and Oblique which just so happen to be the three items VS provides in the drop down list. Is there some mapping going on behind the scenes between the FontStyle struct and FontStyles class, because I've looked in many places in both the object browser and in .NET Reflector and couldn't determine anything from either. • Are there any was to link my program with Wine-compiled part?

  I am trying to use windows dll functionality in Linux. My current solution is a compilation of a separate wine application, that uses dll and transfer requests/responses between dll and main application over IPC. This works, but is a real overhead comparing to a simple dll calls. I see that wine-compiled program usually is a bootstrapping-script and some .so, which (according to file utility) is normal linux dynamically linked library. Are there any way to link that .so directly to my application? Are there any manual?

  Many email clients don't like linked CSS stylesheets, or even the embedded <style> tag, but rather want the CSS to appear inline as style attributes on all your markup. BAD: <link rel=stylesheet type="text/css" href="/style.css"> BAD: <style type="text/css">...</style> WORKS: <h1 style="margin: 0">...</h1> However this inline style attribute approach is a right pain to manage. I've found tools for Ruby and PHP that will take a CSS file and some separate markup as input and return you the merged result - a single file of markup with all the CSS converted to style attributes. I'm looking for a Perl solution to this problem, but I've not found one on CPAN or by searching Google. Any pointers? • Would using a MemoryMappedFile for IPC across AppDomains be faster than WCF/named pipes?

  Context: I am loading and executing untrusted code in a separate AppDomain and am currently communicating between the two using WCF (using named pipes as the underlying transport). I am exchanging relatively simple object graphs using a reasonably coarse-grained API, but would like to use a more fine-grained API if it does not cost me performance-wise. I've noticed that 4.0 adds a MemoryMappedFile class (which doesn't need a physical file, so could be entirely memory based). What kind of performance gains could I expect to see (if any) by using this new class? I know that it would take some "infrastructure code" to get the request/response behavior of WCF, but for now I'm only interested in the performance difference.

  I know it's possible to separate to create a pointer to member function like this struct K { void func() {} }; typedef void FuncType(); typedef FuncType K::* MemFuncType; MemFuncType pF = &K::func; Is there similar way to construct a pointer to a const function? I've tried adding const in various places with no success. I've played around with gcc some and if you do template deduction on something like template <typename Sig, typename Klass> void deduce(Sig Klass::*); It will show Sig with as a function signature with const just tacked on the end. If to do this in code it will complain that you can't have qualifiers on a function type. Seems like it should be possible somehow because the deduction works.

• My app crashes on Iphone SDK 3.2

  Hi Guys, My app worked ok on iPhone SDK 3.1. However, when I try to run it in 3.2 simulator, I get the following error and it crashes: bool _WebTryThreadLock(bool), 0x5148280: Tried to obtain the web lock from a thread other than the main thread or the web thread. This may be a result of calling to UIKit from a secondary thread. Crashing now... Program received signal: “EXC_BAD_ACCESS”. When I debug it, it leads me to this peace of code: - (void)LoginViewToCheckView:(id)sender { CheckViewController *tempTestController = [[CheckViewController alloc] initWithStyle:UITableViewStyleGrouped]; [tempTestController setDelegate:self]; [self setCheckViewController: tempTestController]; [tempTestController release]; [navigationController pushViewController:checkViewController animated:YES];} Other thing worth mentioning is maybe that I am calling this function from a separate thread. Any ideas what could be wrong?

• Delphi : Restore a pre-design tabsheet after user has closed it...

  Hello, I have a tPageControl on a form, and have made a nice 'welcome page' as a new ttabsheet at design time for the user to start off with. However, if the user closes this tab, I would like the option to bring it back, as it was in originally (much like the welcome page in the Delphi IDE). This seems like a simple problem... When the tab closes, the original sheet is freed and set nil. I tried creating the sheet again by name (e.g. tabsheet1 := ttabsheet.create) and assigning it to the pagecontrol, but none of the original components from the sheet are there anymore... I know designing the welcome page as a separate form, creating it when I need it and slapping it into a new tabsheet would work... but I was just wondering if there was a way to do it with the design time tabsheet. • Codeigniter Form Validation - how to unset form values after success?

  I realise this request goes against the example provided in the CI documentation (which advises a separate 'success' page view), but I would like to reutilise a given form view after a form has been successfully submitted - displaying a success message then displaying a blank form. I've tried a few ways unsuccessfully to clear the validation set values (unsetting $_POST, setting rules / fields to an empty array and rerunning validatio). I could redirect to the same page, but then I'd have to set a session variable to display a success message - which is a messy approach. Any ideas how to achieve the above?

What are the popular/typical approaches/systems here? There's software like libketama, which provides consistent hashing, but this is just a client-side library that reacts to messages about node arrivals/departures---do most users just run something like this, plus separate monitoring nodes that, on detecting failures, notify all the libketamas of the departure? I imagine something like this might be sufficient since typical use of memcached as a soft-state cache doesn't require careful attention to consistency, but I'm curious what people do.
