• Command line way of stopping a process in windows

  Does anyone know where I can get windows images for vmware. I know Microsoft gives away the images for Virtual PC. These images work pretty well, but when I try to import them in VMware I need to activate the copies again, because the virtual hardware they use is just to different. I want Images of different versions of windows 2000,xp,vista. Does anyone where I can download them, or do I need to build them from CD.

• How do I boot to the Recovery Partition on an eMachines D620 notebook?

  I installed the Windows 7 RC on my wife's laptop and now need to reinstall Vista for her. I was very careful to leave the recovery partition intact so that I could do this, but I don't see a way to boot to it. In the Disk Management console I can see the "9.77GB Healthy (Recovery Partition)" partition but I can't do anything with it - the context menu only contains the Help option. Any ideas?

  recommendations for ESX4 OS - VMFS version3: matching: RAID-5 stripe size with VMFS block size? (64K, 128K etc) enabled "adaptive read ahead, write-back" on PERC 6i 90% VMs on server are Windows (2008, 2003, Vista etc, SQL 2005 etc) i have read that smaller stipes are good for writes and larger for reads. Since this is virtual env, not sure whats good.

• Why doesn't this Firefox bookmark keyword work?

  I have the keyword bookmark it's the same location as another one with a different keyword which works. I type google test and it takes me to http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=test, but I type g test and it takes me to the first result from I'm feeling luck as if there were no bookmark keyword there at all. Firefox 3.6 on Windows Vista.

I found links for BitLocker Repair Tool to help recover data from an encrypted volume for windows vista and windows 2008 here http://support.microsoft.com/kb/928201 but did not find anything on microsoft for windows 7. But did not find any for windows 7 Ultimate.

  I sometimes gets an ip address of 169.254.111.111 received for my laptop (instead of one in the 10.0.0.x range). I thought it was a problem with my Ubuntu system, but after I dual-booted I got the same problem under Windows Vista with the same laptop. What's the problem, why does it happens only sometimes, and how can it be solved? For the record: I'm using a Linksys WRT610N wireless router.

After all my encodes are done, I would like to have the PC speaker beep, as I usually turn my large external speakers off.   Windows 7 keeps asking for a password every time I mount a webdav. I don't want to store a password in a .bat file because it's so insecure. Is there any way to force system store it? Manually adding credentials in user manager helps storing passwords for SMB shares but for webdav doesn't. btw, as far as I remember, Vista had the same problems.

  we just setup a windows 7 ultimate file server, and all the other computers on the network, found the server expect the windows 8 computer. computers on the network: vista, win 7 ultimate, mac os, win 8 (problem) I setup a homegroup on the win 7 server pc, but the windows 8 computer can't find the homegroup, nor can it connect to the server by typing its network ext //server-pc i've tried to turn on all the windows 8 sharing to discovery ON, on Private and Public and all Networks, and got nothing. should be noted that the computer is using norton firewall/AV, im not sure if that's a factor

• Why does Microsoft Windows' performance appear to degrade over time?

  Windows XP/2k3 and earlier (can't attest to Vista, but suspect it's the same) all appear to become more sluggish over time as applications are installed and uninstalled. This is not a scientifically tested observation, but more of a learned-through-experience piece of wisdom. (I've always suspected the registry as being behind the issue.) Does anyone have any concrete evidence of this degradation occurring, or it just an invalid perception of mine?

  Dear ladies and sirs. I have a need to create a self signed certificate non interactively. Unfortunately, the only tool that I know of (makecert) is interactive - it uses GUI to ask for a password. My OS is Windows (from XP to 2008). This proves to be not so easy, as I have tried these solutions: I disabled the "Google updateservice" service I removed the registry section "HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run\Google Update" None of these worked. The registry section is simply re-added. Does anyone know the trick to avoid GoogleUpdate.exe to be started after booting the system?

  I had a Vista machine and my iPhone was sync'ed to that machine. But after I got a new machine with Windows 7, I moved that old computer away and is not using it. So now I installed iTunes on this new Win 7 computer, and bought a new song from the iTune store, but I can't add this song to the iPhone. It seems I have to erase all songs on the iPhone in order to add this one song?
