• Using Cygwin in Windows 8, chmod 600 does not work as expected?

  I'm trying to change the the permissions to my key file key.pem in Cygwin 1.7.11. It has the permissions flags: -rw-rw---- chmod -c 600 key.pem Reports: mode of 'key.pem' changed from 0660 (rw-rw----) to 0600 (rw-------) However: ls -l key.pem still reports key.pem's permission flags are still: -rw-rw---- This reason why I'm asking is that ssh is complaining: Permissions 0660 for 'key.pem' are too open. when I try to ssh into my Amazon EC2 instance. Is this an issue with Cygwin & Windows 8 NTFS or am I missing something?

• icacls, Network Service, and setting ACLs on Windows Server 2008

  Setting ACLs on Windows Server 2008 via the command line is giving me some problems. As per http://web2.minasi.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC%5FID=26907 I've tried all sorts of variations: C:\Windows\system32icacls "D:\Websites\site.com\Web\bin*" /grant 'NT A uthority\NETWORK SERVICE: (OI) (CI)M' C:\Windows\system32icacls "D:\Websites\site.com\Web\bin*" /grant "NETWORK SERVICE": (OI) (CI)M And all variations in between. However, each try leads to i.e. "Invalid parameter "'NETWORK'"" depending on the variation above. As per http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc753525%28WS.10%29.aspx (see in comments), it appears that others have experienced the same issue where the same command works on Windows 7/Vista/etc., but not on Windows Server 2008. What's the best way to apply permissions to Network Service account on a directory and/or files via the command line in Windows Server 2008? Especially as there's no way to do multiple file permissions at once via the GUI (see http://serverfault.com/questions/30991/windows-server-2008-change-security-settings-for-multiple-files-at-once).

• Ubuntu/Windows XP - Joint systems

  I have a computer sectioned to run both Ubuntu 10.10 and Windows XP but as XP refuses to log in (If I select XP the log in starts with the Windows logo being shown on the screen for a few seconds before the screen goes blank and the page showing the option of selecting Windows or Ubuntu the re-appears), I would like to clear it completely from the system and just run Ubuntu. Can this be done, and if so, how do I proceed with doing it?

• GRUB problem after uninstalling mint

  I've uninstalled Linux Mint 13 today from my netbook. The netbook was running Windows XP and Linux Mint on dual boot. I've deleted the Linux's partition and now whenever I turn on the computer I get "Partitation not found" grub error... I have no CD drive so I can't insert any repair CDs or XP CD. I'm currently hopeless. And now I can't even load Linux Mint from my USB drive... Can someone help me?

• Can't ping IPs for devices not part of Windows Domain

  I have a home network with a Trendnet wireless router and a Windows Domain. The DNS server is on a Windows 2000 Server and is configured to forward queries to DNS servers provided by the ISP. The router provides DHCP and is configured with the Windows 2000 Server as the DNS server. When I connect iPhones to the network over WiFi, the router can ping the iPhones through its browser based admin interface, but Windows machines that are part of the Windows Domain cannot. A laptop was connected to the network over WiFi that wasn't joined to the domain and it could see the iPhones. All machines either have a fixed or DHCP allocated IP on the 192.168.0.* subnet. How do I configure the DNS server or the Windows Domain so that Windows machines can see the iPhones?

• Sharing Windows Folders on a Network... other PCs see but can't access

  I'm soooo tired of network setup issues. All I want to do is share a folder and all it's sub-folders so other PCs on my network can view and change this remote location. Why is it that setting a dir to "shared" doesn't actually make it usable in any way? The other PC can see the fodler but is unable to actually open it and look inside. It seems every time I want to do this I go through some semi-random process of right clicking the folder and enabling sharing, then looking in the folder properties to add permissions and other sharing... and then I end up with some folders working but others will randomly block permission on certain files or sub-dirs. I have 5 PCs in my local testing network and I cannot believe it should be this complicated... where is the simple "make this folder work on the network" option?! I have a mixture of XP, Vista & W7 machines, but this seems common to all of them.

  So the machine is behind a DSL router on a private IP so that it can not receive inbound requests. I want to know: Is there anyway to setup the router NAT (i highly doubt it supports one to one port mapping) without disturbing other users on the same router. I have another machine on internet which has public IP on it without any firewall. Can i use this machine as a relay server so that to initiate the connection, the XP machine send an outbound request and this relay server makes my connection through and then i can access my machine on pvt ip without any problem.   Hi! My win XP account profile has recently been "reset". Many app settings are lost. For example, the "recent project" list in VS 2005 is empty. There should be lots of other stuffs that are painfully lost without me knowing! What can I do? Can I retrieve the app settings from System Restore? I don't have much confidence on this util, even tho I think restoring to a point when the profile still works, and back up away the C:\Documents and Settings (is it where all the app setting files are located?), that should work... Is it reliable to restore to a previous restore pt and then goes back to the latest RP? I've googled on System Restore, looks like what the util does is just back up some physical files, and restore them when doing System Restore. That sounds quite safe, but I am still uncomfortable to this. Thx for u guys' help in advance!

I was just trying to set some shortcut keys, and wanted to use Alt + Shift + P for Anywho.com, but to my surprise Alt + Shift + P is already taken. It calls Windows Media Player. Now I like WMP and will use it a lot, but I want my Alt + Shift + P for AnyWho.com. I've noticed that the TightVNC will become unresponsive after a period of inactivity. Is this a common issue? Restarting TightVNC solves the problem, but can be a bit annoying. • Replace gvimext.dll in Windows 8

  How can I get the "Edit with ... using tabs" functionality in gVim on Windows 8 (64-bit)? I'd like to swap out gVim's stock gvimext.dll for one that adds an "Edit with ... using tabs" option to Explorer's right-click context menu. On Windows 7 (64-bit) I used to be able to download the DLL and swap it in by following these instructions. However, I can't get it to work in Windows 8. The stock installation's context menu (sans "... using tabs") works fine (without a restart) ...but after replacing the DLL the gVim context menu options disappear and the gvimext.dll no longer seems to even load. (Windows 8 was restarted) if I again replace gvimext.dll with a backup of the stock DLL, the context menu options remain missing and the DLL still seems to fail to load (Windows 8 was restarted, again) If I re-install gVim, the context menu items return (even without a restart) What is the difference here between Windows 7 (where swapping DLL's works) and Windows 8 (where swapping DLL's fails)?

• When XP is asleep for a long time LAN reports code 43, gives up the ghost.

  This one's got me stumped. Whenever the system is asleep for a long time, e.g overnight, the LAN driver reports error code 43 ("a problem") and turns itself off. This has being going on for months, but I never caught the problem until now. The owner merely shuttles back to a restore point I set her when the machine worked. Previously (without knowing exactly what was happening) I have tried everything to resolve this. Manually resetting the TCP/IP, fiddling with the driver Wake From LAN settings, DIFFERENT drivers, etc. etc. The solution is easy, uninstalling and reinstalling the driver. Understandably, though, the user is uncomfortable with this operation and the problem persists. What's causing it and how to stop it recurring? Any ideas? Thanks in advance to this great community. I am struggling to find any tools out there that I can use to deal with them in one application. • Get the Windows 7 Start Menu Back in Windows 8 with Classic Shell

  I just thought I’d give readers a heads up that you can use Classic Shell to get the old Windows 7 style of start menu back instead of using the new crappy Windows 8 metro start screen; plus it’s free and open source .  You can still access the metro start screen with Shift+WindowsKey or Shift clicking the start menu button.  This program also defaults to showing the desktop on startup instead of the metro start screen (but that can be disabled), and is super configurable and has tons of options to tweak it just the way you want if you are picky like me   The only thing I would say is when installing the app, only install the Classic Start Menu; you don’t need the other ones.
