Suppose I have the project to build a website. Now I divide the project into sub tasks and do it. But you know that suppose I have task1 in hand like export the page to pdf. Now I spend 3 days to do that , came across various problems, many Stack Overflow questions and in the end I solve it. Now 4 months after someone told me that there is some error in the code. Now by that I completely forgot about (60%) of how I did it and why I do this way. I document the code but I can't write the whole story of that in the code. Then I have to spend much time on code to find what was the problem so that I added this line etc. I want to know that is there any way that i can log steps in completing the project. So that I can see how I end up with code, what errors I got, what questions I asked on SO and etc. How people do it in real time? Which software to use? I know in our project management software called JIRA we have tasks but that does not cover what steps I took to solve that tasks. What is the best way so that when I look back at my 2 year old project, I know how I solve particular task?

I ran the install-css.sh script, and it completed with no problems.   I have a data frame in R that has come about from running some stats on the result fo a melt/cast operation. I want to add a row into this dataframe containing a Nominal value. That Nominal Value is present in the names for each column df<-as.data.frame(cbind(x=c(1,2,3,4,5),`Var A_100`=c(5,4,3,2,1),`Var B_5`=c(9,8,7,6,5))) > df x Var A_100 Var B_5 1 1 5 9 2 2 4 8 3 3 3 7 4 4 2 6 5 5 1 5 So, I want to create a new row, that contains '100' in the column Var A_100 and '5' in Var B_5. • Getting the Dell XPS 16 Synaptics touchpad to work after hibernation in Ubuntu.

  I am currently experimenting with using Ubuntu as a my main OS instead of Windows 7. So far, pretty much everything is working fine, except for an issue that I am having with my touchpad. I have a Dell XPS 16 (1640) with a Synaptics touchpad. It works out of the box, but it seems that it stops working after returning from hibernation mode. This problem has also been addressed in an earlier bug, but judging from this bugreport, it should be fixed by now. I am running the 2.6.35-23-generic-pae kernel. Any ideas?

• Can I get the Waves Maxx speaker effects to work in Ubuntu?

  I have a new machine that comes with JBL 2.1 Speakers with Waves Maxx Audio 3. On Windows it sounds perfect, though in Ubuntu 12.04 I get cheap/sound with simple mp3 files. I have tried a few things on different blogs but no luck so far. • How to overcome politics of the net (Google translate code refuses to work from a specific region)

  According to the FAQ's I am not sure if my question is a ok to ask or will be closed or should I post it in the meta or even I would blame some one for downvoting it. However it is one that has been bugging me since the trouble strated. Let me explain. I have this Web Site. If I use Firefox Stealthy Plugin and open the site in Firefox, It works like a charm without any problems. But with Google Chrome, Apple Safari and Opera Web browser, the site does not load/open at all because of the Google translate. (I know this because If I remove the Google Translate Code, the site works/loads fine) It was one thing to program for "cross browser compatability" and alltogether another to program for "cross region compatability". What can I do to make sure that the site works from anywhere? Do I completely remove the Google Translate code and just have to do without the additional functionality or Do I look for alternatives like this or according to this?

  Based on what I have read about Google's recent Panda and Penguin updates, I'm getting the impression that using semantic markup may help improve SEO results. On a EMD (exact match domain) site, that may have been hit, we list location-based products. We are now going to be adding a itemtype="http://schema.org/Product" to each product, with relevant details. However, that product may be available in Los Angeles and also in appear in a Seattle results page. We could add a LocalBusiness item type on each geo page to define the geo location for that page. While the definition states: A particular physical business or branch of an organization. Examples of LocalBusiness include a restaurant, a particular branch of a restaurant chain, a branch of a bank, a medical practice, a club, a bowling alley, etc. We could add use the location property which would simply include the city/state details. I realize that this looks like it is meant for a physical location, however could this be done without seeming black-hat?

Background I am a contract developer and have just been asked to provide a general liability policy for my next gig. In 6-7 years this has never been asked of me. Question Is this common? If so, can anyone recommend a good underwriter that focuses on what we do as contract software developers? I realize that Google could help me find underwriters but it won't give me unbiased public opinion about which companies actually understand what we do and factor that into the price of the policy. • Why are my videos playing speeded up with no audio, but work fine if I log in as a guest?

  Since the start of this week I have been experiencing a glitch in the multimedia on my Samsung R518 laptop. I have 2 problems: Videos in every player are speeded up around 2 or 4 times (including youtube.com (both HTML5 and flash variants), any other video on the web and videos on my laptop played by Totem Media Player), exception is VLC player, but 2nd problem does concern even that. There is no sound - simple as that (with or without headphones plugged in). These all problems are now, and has not seen before, I upgraded to Ubuntu 10.10 after it was possible, and from start I didn't have anything from this - it just started in this week. I haven't even putted new software in. I have more or less solved the question (kind of) - I just logged in as a guest - and it all works, but when I make a new user - it does not. Please help me. The touchpad has up/down arrows on the right side, as if this would scroll. When I installed Ubuntu 11.10, I was able to use this touchpad scroll function. I recently did an update (at some late hours) and i can no longer use right side of the touchpad to scroll. Can anyone tell me how to get the same function as I had in Windows and Ubuntu 11.10 ? • How does a BSP tree work for Z sorting?

  I'm developing a 3D engine in software, and so I must compute Z sorting manually. I'm currently using the painters algorithm to sort triangles and then drawing them back-to-front. This causes artifacts that I'm trying to correct. Would using a dynamic BSP-tree ensure "correct Z sorting" of triangles? Why? Because the bounding volumes of triangles would be similar? Since I would have a single "world" BSP tree, would I have to remove and re-add any moved/scaled/rotated object into the tree? Is it possible to add triangles into a BSP tree without the expensive cutting process? Why do you need to cut triangles on the axis planes anyway? Is it faster to traverse a BSP tree from any angle, than to sort all tris each draw like the painters algorithm?

I divided roles into: - junior developer (works mainly on UI and some light things) - senior developer (develops complex logic, database structures, etc.) - lead developer (leads the team, usually most experienced person) - negotiator/resolver (a person who directly talk to a client trying to either negotiate terms and timeframe or to clarify vagueness presented by a team leader) My AIM is to calculate percentage of role's involvement based on quality, not time (obviously a junior will spend most time in project, but with the least quality). In the end I would get a table which may look like this: Total: 100% ---------------- Junior: 10% Senior: 50% Lead: 30% Negotiator: 10% Can this be achieved? Has anyone found any source which may help me?

• exporting a maya model to work with Playstation mobile Studio?

  Ive just started to program in Playstation Mobile Studio for the PS vita. The Models that are available to use in Ps Development have to .mdk models. The studio comes with a a model converter that converts from DAE, FBX, XSI and X files. However ive tried converting a maya scene to both DAE and FBX files but the converter returns an error with no explanation. Ive even tried to use blender and the tutorial here: http://www.gamefromscratch.com/post/2012/04/30/Exporting-from-Blender-to-PS-Suite-Blender-to-Vita-in-under-5-minutes.aspx but this fails at the converter too. With regards to maya all i do is export the file with default settings. Anyone know any good tutorials on this or guess why this would be happening?

What I have in mind involves code generating programming utilities. And one issue I can think of, either way, is a near total inability to enforce any license restrictions. I would like to ask: How do the client and the server communicate? What details does the client leave to the server, and vice versa? What details are redundant - both the client and the server know - and how often do they disagree? The previous paragraph contains the important questions, but I have a few more that I must explain my motivation towards. I am interested in the programming of botting. Ethical botting - I don't plan on actually abusing the automation to run 24/7. I just find it to be a great programming challenge to glean information from a game, and then make decisions from that information. I am stuck in the starting gate. The unofficial questions from this post would be: How can I make a bot (language, tools, libraries)? Can I get information through the communication between client and server, rather than the brute force pixel detection easily used in more static games? • Python's asyncore to periodically send data using a variable timeout. Is there a better way?

  I wanted to write a server that a client could connect to and receive periodic updates without having to poll. The problem I have experienced with asyncore is that if you do not return true when dispatcher.writable() is called, you have to wait until after the asyncore.loop has timed out (default is 30s). The two ways I have tried to work around this is 1) reduce timeout to a low value or 2) query connections for when they will next update and generate an adequate timeout value. However if you refer to 'Select Law' in 'man 2 select_tut', it states, "You should always try to use select() without a timeout." Is there a better way to do this? Twisted maybe? I wanted to try and avoid extra threads.   I find the W3C's official Offline Web Applications specification to be rather vague about how the cache manifest interacts with headers such as ETag, Expires, or Pragma on cached assets. I know that the manifest should be checked with each request so that the browser knows when to check the other assets for updates. But because the specification doesn't define how the cache manifest interacts with normal cache instructions, I can't predict precisely how the browser will react. Will assets with a future expiration date be refreshed (no matter the cache headers) when the cache manifest is updated? Or, will those assets obey the normal caching rules? Which caching mechanism, HTTP cache versus cache manifest, will take precedence, and when?

  BACKGROUND: I am of the "user-input-lockdown" school of thought. Whenever possible, I try to mistrust and sanitize user input, both client side and server side; and I try to take multiple opportunities to restrict possible inputs to a known subset of possibilities, usually this means providing a lot of checkboxes and select lists. (This is from the usability side of things, I know security-wise that malicious users can easily bypass fixed user input GUI controls). PROBLEM: Anyway, the problem always arises with non-fixed input of currency. Whenever I have to accept a freely-specified dollar amount as user input, I always have to confront these problems/annoyances and it is always painful: 1) Make sure to give the user two input boxes for each currency_datapoint, one for the whole_dollar_part and another for the fractional_pennies_part 2) Whenever the user changes a currency_datapoint, provide keystroke-by-keystroke GUI feedback to let them know whether the currency_datapoint is well-formed, with context-appropriate validation rules (e.g., no negatives?, nonzero only?, numeric only!, no non-numeric punctuation! no symbols!) 3) For display purposes, every user-provided currency_datapoint should be translated to human-readable currency formatting (dollar sign, period, commas provided by the app, where appropriate) 4) For calculation purposes, every user-provided currency_datapoint has to be converted to integer (all pennies, to avoid floating point errors) and summed into a grand total with zero or more subtotals. 5) Every user-provided currency_datapoint should be displayed or displayable in a nice "tabular" format, which auto-updates as the user enters each currency_datapoint, including a baloon that warns when one or more currency_datapoints is not well-formed. I seem to be re-inventing this wheel every time I have to work with currency in Javascript on the client side (server side is a bit more flexible since most programming languages have higher-level currency formatting logic). QUESTION: Has anyone out there solved the problem of dealing with the above issues, client side, in a way that is server-side-technology-stack agnostic, (preferrably plain javascript or jquery)? This is getting old, there has to be a better way.

  I had a friend in college who programmed something that worked the first time, that was pretty amazing. But as for me, I just fire up the debugger as soon as I finally get whatever I'm working on to compile - saves me time (kidding of course, I sometimes hold out a little bit of hope or use a lot of premeditated debug strings). What's the best way to approach the Dijkstrain ideal for our programs? -or- Is this just some sort of pie-in-the-sky old fools quest for greatness applicable only to finite tasks that no one should hope for in our professional lives because programming is just too complex?

• webhost4life, please give me, my data back. My website will not work without the database.

  I have about 4 or 5 accounts with WebHost4life.com, these are all my customers that based on my recommendation have been hosting with webhost4life.com. A few days ago for some reason they decided to migrate one of these accounts to a new server. They moved everything created a new database on the new server but the new database is empty. after spending hours with Tech support they acknowledged the problem and assured me it will take up to an hour or two and my database will be populated with the data. this was about 7 hours ago. Oh by the way I pay extra for the backup plan and yes you guessed it, none of my backups are there. Needless to say I’m very scared and disappointed. No one is responding to my emails  or phone calls. After searching the web, I found out, this has happened before, in some cases it took them days to fix the problem and many never got it resolved and switched hosting companies, I would love to do that but I need my 2 GB database before I start shopping around for a new hosting company. Stay away from Webhost4life.

  I've accumulated a lot of side projects over the years, which I slowly improve on over time. Whenever I return to one, I take some time reading over text files that include design, recent bugs, next features, etc... that I should be working on - it's not pretty. I'm looking to switch to something more formal. Ideally, this would be a full featured, online, bug tracking system, which allows for free or nearly free bug tracking for my own projects. Also, ideally this would be doable in a private manner - I don't really want everyone to see my side projects and what a mess I've made of some of them.

• How do I get my HP M1132 printer to work?

  I connected my printer to the computer and Ubuntu 12.04recognized it and installed it, but when I try to print something, the printer just gives a signal as if the document had already been printed and nothing happens, and at the printing queue the job is still there as "Processing - Not Connected?" or "Stopped". The printer is working fine on Microsoft Windows and I am sure it is connected. In the status field in the printer properties, it says: Processing - /usr/lib/cups/filter/hpcups failed. I'd like someone to please teach me how to get this printer (and it's scanner) working on Ubuntu.
