• Oracle Virtual Server OEL vm fails to start - kernel panic on cpu identify

  I am in the process of following a guide to setup various oracle vm templates, so far I have installed OVS 2. 2 and got the OVM Manager working, imported the template for OEL5U5 and created a vm from it.. the problem comes when starting that vm. • Encourage the use of markup files as documentation in enterprise [closed]

  To make it eaiser to do version control and diff files of documentation, use markup files, such as HTML: html/xhtml, XML: docbook, Wiki: markdown to replace doc/docx. docx is too complex and lengthy. For html, no extra document generation required. Programmers can write html directly and end users / managers can use any web browsers to view the document. For custom XML or Wiki formats, viewers are required to view the document or converters are used to export to pdf/doc. Is such move becoming popular in enterprise context? Why or why not?

• OAM OVD integration - Error Encounterd while performance test "LDAP response read timed out, timeout used:2000ms"

  While working on OAM OVD integration for one of my client, I have been involved in the performance test of the products wherein I encountered OAM authentication failures while talking to OVD during heavy load. OAM logs revealed the following: oracle.security.am.common.policy.common.response.ResponseException: oracle.security.am.engines.common.identity.provider.exceptions.IdentityProviderException: OAMSSA-20012: Exception in getting user attributes for user : dummy_user1, idstore MyIdentityStore with exception javax.naming.NamingException: LDAP response read timed out, timeout used:2000ms.; remaining name 'ou=people,dc=oracle,dc=com' at oracle.security.am.common.policy.common.response.IdentityValueProvider.getUserAttribute(IdentityValueProvider.java:271) ... During the authentication and authorization process, OAM complains that the LDAP repository is taking too long to return user attributes.The default value is 2 seconds as can be seen from the exception, "2000ms". While troubleshooting the issue, it was found that we can increase the ldap read timeout in oam-config.xml.  For reference, the attribute to add in the oam-config.xml file is: <Setting Name="LdapReadTimeout" Type="xsd:string">2000</Setting> However it is not recommended to increase the time out unless it is absolutely necessary and ensure that back-end directory servers are working fine. Rather I took the path of tuning OVD in the following manner: 1) Navigate to ORACLE_INSTANCE/config/OPMN/opmn folder and edit opmn.xml. Search for <data id="java-options" ………> and edit the contents of the file with the highlighted items: <category id="start-options"><data id="java-bin" value="$ORACLE_HOME/jdk/bin/java"/><data id="java-options" value="-server -Xms1024m -Xmx1024m -Dvde.soTimeoutBackend=0 -Didm.oracle.home=$ORACLE_HOME -Dcommon.components.home=$ORACLE_HOME/../oracle_common -XX:+PrintGCDetails -XX:+PrintGCDateStamps -Xloggc:/opt/bea/Middleware/asinst_1/diagnostics/logs/OVD/ovd1/ovdGClog.log -XX:+UseConcMarkSweepGC -Doracle.security.jps.config=$ORACLE_INSTANCE/config/JPS/jps-config-jse.xml"/><data id="java-classpath" value="$ORACLE_HOME/ovd/jlib/vde.jar$:$ORACLE_HOME/jdbc/lib/ojdbc6.jar"/></category></module-data><stop timeout="120"/><ping interval="60"/></process-type> When the system is busy, a ping from the Oracle Process Manager and Notification Server (OPMN) to Oracle Virtual Directory may fail. As a result, OPMN will restart Oracle Virtual Directory after 20 seconds (the default ping interval). To avoid this, consider increasing the ping interval to 60 seconds or more. 2) Navigate to ORACLE_INSTANCE/config/OVD/ovd1 folder.Open listeners.os_xml file and perform the following changes: · Search for <ldap id=”Ldap Endpoint”…….> and point the cursor to that line. · Change threads count to 200. · Change anonymous bind to Deny. · Change workQueueCapacity to 8096. Add a new parameter <useNIO> and set its value to false viz: <useNIO>false</useNio> Snippet: <ldap version="8" id="LDAP Endpoint"> ....... .......  <socketOptions><backlog>128</backlog>         <reuseAddress>false</reuseAddress>         <keepAlive>false</keepAlive>         <tcpNoDelay>true</tcpNoDelay>         <readTimeout>0</readTimeout>      </socketOptions> <useNIO>false</useNIO></ldap> Restart OVD server. For more information on OVD tuneup refer to http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E25054_01/core.1111/e10108/ovd.htm. Please Note: There were few patches released from OAM side for performance tune-up as well. Will provide the updates shortly !!!

A rephrasing of the instructions might help: Ensure the WebLogic AdminServer is not running (in a default scenario that would mean port 7001 is not active). Ensure you have logged into the computer as the installing owner of EPM. Since Enterprise Manager uses a LOT of resources, be sure that there is adequate free RAM to accommodate the added load. On the machine where WebLogic AdminServer is set up (typically the Foundation Services machine), run \Oracle\Middleware\wlserver_10.3\common\bin\config (config.sh on Unix). Select the 'Extend an existing WebLogic domain' option, and click the 'Next' button. Select the domain being used by EPM System. - Typically, the default domain is created under /Oracle/Middleware/user_projects/domains and is named EPMSystem. - Click 'Next'. Under 'Extend my domain automatically to support the following added products' - place a check mark before 'Oracle Enterprise Manager - 11.1.1.0 [oracle_common]' to select it. - Continue accepting the defaults by clicking 'Next' on each page until - on the last page you click 'Extend'. - The system will grind for a few minutes while it configures (deploys?) EM. - Start the AdminServer. Sometimes there is contention in the startup order of the various servlets (resulting in some not coming up). Enterprise Manager’s compliance library is filled with a wide variety of standards based on Oracle’s recommendations, best practices and security guidelines. These standards can be easily associated to a target to generate a report showing its degree of conformance to that standard. ( To get an overview of  Database compliance management in Enterprise Manager see this screenwatch. ) Starting with release 12.1.0.4 of Enterprise Manager the compliance library will contain a new standard based on the US Defense Information Systems Agency (DISA) Security Technical Implementation Guide (STIG) for Oracle Database 11g. According to the DISA website, “The STIGs contain technical guidance to ‘lock down’ information systems/software that might otherwise be vulnerable to a malicious computer attack.” In essence, a STIG is a technical checklist an administrator can follow to secure a system or software. Many US government entities are required to follow these standards however many non-US government entities and commercial companies base their standards directly or partially on these STIGs. You can find more information about the Oracle Database and other STIGs on the DISA website. The Oracle Database 11g STIG consists of two categories of checks, installation and instance. Installation checks focus primarily on the security of the Oracle Home while the instance checks focus on the configuration of the running database instance itself. If you view the STIG compliance standard in Enterprise Manager, you will see the rules organized into folders corresponding to these categories. If you ever created customer compliance content in past versions of Enterprise Manager, you likely used Configuration Extensions to collect additional information into the EM repository so it could be used in a Repository compliance rule. This process although powerful, could be confusing to correctly model the SQL in the rule creation wizard. With agent-side rules, the user only needs to choose the Configuration Extension/Alias combination and that’s it. Enterprise Manager will do the rest for you. This tighter integration also means their lifecycle is managed together. When you associate an agent-side compliance standard to a target, the required Configuration Extensions will be deployed automatically for you. The opposite is also true, when you unassociated the compliance standard, the Configuration Extensions will also be undeployed. The Oracle Database STIG compliance standard is implemented as an agent-side standard which is why you simply need to associate the standard to your database targets without previously deploying the associated Configuration Extensions. This could be something as simple as “Ensure the datacenter entrance is secured.” or complex as Oracle Database STIG Rule DG0186 – “The database should not be directly accessible from public or unauthorized networks”. These checks require a human to perform and attest to its successful completion. Enterprise Manager now supports these types of checks in Manual rules. When first associated to a target, each manual rule will generate a single violation. These violations must be manually cleared by a user who is in essence attesting to its successful completion. The user is able to permanently clear the violation or give a future date on which the violation will be regenerated. Setting a future date is useful when policy dictates a periodic re-validation of conformance wherein the user will have to reperform the check. The optional reason field gives the user an opportunity to provide details of the check results. These include approved exceptions and grace periods. Enterprise Manager now supports the ability to temporarily or permanently suppress a violation. Unlike when you clear a manual rule violation, suppression simply removes the violation from the compliance results UI and in turn its negative impact on the score. The violation still remains in the EM repository and can be accounted for in compliance reports. Temporarily suppressing a violation can give users a grace period in which to address an issue. If the issue is not addressed within the specified period, the violation will reappear in the results automatically. Again the user may enter a reason for the suppression which will be permanently saved with the event along with the suppressing user ID. • How to deal with a poor team leader and a tester manager from hell? [closed]

  Let me begin by explaining my situation and give a little context to the situation. My company has around 15 developers but we're split up on two different areas. We have a fresh product team and the old product team. The old product team does mostly bug fixes/maintenance and a feature here and there. The fresh product had never been released and was new from the ground up. I am on the fresh product team. The team consists of three developers (myself, another developer and a senior developer). The senior is also our team leader. Our roles are as follows: Myself: building the administration client as well as build/release stuff Other dev: building the primary client Team lead: building the server In addition to the dev team, we interact with the test manager often. By "we" I mean me since I do the build stuff and give him the builds to test. Trial 1: The other developer on my team and I have both tried to talk to our manager about our team leader. About two weeks before release we went in his office and had a closed door meeting before our team lead got to work. We expressed our concerns about the product, its release date and our team leader. We expressed our team leader had a "rosey" image of the product's state. Our manager seemed to listen to what we said and thanked us for taking the initiative to speak with him about it. He got us an extra two weeks before release. The situation with the leader didn't change. In fact, it got a little worse. While we were using the two weeks to fix issues he was slacking off quite a bit. Just to name a few things, he installed Windows 8 on his dev machine during this time (claimed him machine was broke), he wrote a plugin for our office messenger that turned turned messages into speech, and one time when I went in his office he was making a 3D model in Blender (for "fun"). He felt the product was "pretty good" and ready for release. During this time I dealt with the test manager on a daily basis. Every bug or issue that popped up he would pretty much attack me personally (regardless of which component the bug was in). The test manager would often push his "views" of what needed to be done with the product. He virtually ordered me to change text on our installer and to add features to the installer and administration client. I tried to express how his suggestions were "valid ideas" but it was too close to release to do those kinds of things and to make matters worse, our technical writer had already finished documentation and such a change would not only affect the dev team but would affect the technical writer and marketing as well. I expressed I wasn't going to make those changes without marketing's consent as well as the technical writer and my manager's. He pretty much said I don't care about the product and said I don't do my job. I would like to take a moment to say I take my job seriously and I do my best. I am the kind of person that goes to work 30-40 mins early and usually leaves 30 minutes later than everyone else. Saying I don't care or do my job is just insulting. His "attacks" on me grew from day to day. Every bug that popped up he would usually comment on in some manner that jabbed me and the other developer. "Oh that bug! Yeah that should have been fixed by now, figures! If someone would do their job!" and other similar kinds of comments. Keep in mind 8 out of 10 bugs were in the server and had nothing to do with me and the other developer. That didn't seem to matter.. On one occasion they got pretty bad and we almost got into a yelling match so I decided to stop talking to him all together. I carried all communication through office email (with my manager cc'd). He never attacked me via email. He still attempted to get aggressive with me in person but I completely ignore him and my only response to any question is, "Ask my team leader." or "Ask a product manager." The product launched after our two week extension. Trial 2: The day after the product launch our team leader went on vacation (thanks....). At this time we got a lot of questions from the tech support... major issues with the product. All of these issues were bugs marked "resolved" by our lovely team leader (a typical situation that often popped up). This is where we currently are. The other developer has been with the company for about three years (I've been there only five months) and told me he was going to speak with our manager alone and hoped it would help get our concerns across a little better in a one-on-one. He spoke with the manager and directly addressed all of our concerns regarding our team leader and the test manager giving us (mostly me) hell. Our manager basically said he understood how hard we work and said he noticed it and there's no doubt about it. He said he spoke with the test manager about his temper. Regarding the team leader, he didn't say a whole lot. He suggested we sit down with the team leader and address our concerns (isn't that the manager's job?). We're still waiting to see if anything has changed but we doubt it. What can we do next? 1) Talk to the team leader (may stress relationship and make work awkward) I admit the team leader is generally a nice guy. He is just a horrible leader and working closely with him is painful. I still don't believe bringing this directly to the team leader would help at all and may negatively impact the situation. 2) I could quit. Other than this situation the job is pretty fantastic. I really like my other coworkers and we have quite a bit of freedom. 3) I could take the situation with the team leader to one of the owners. I would then be throwing my manager under the bus. 4) I could take the situation with the test manager to HR. Any suggestions? Comments?

• Error Connecting to Oracle Database from Pentaho Report Designer

  Hi all, I am new to Pentaho, and I am struggling to set up a new database connection. I am trying to connect to an Oracle 10g database, but whenever I test the connection, I get the below error. It doesn't really seem to list any specific error message so I'm not really sure what to do or where to go from this point. I placed ojdbc jar's in my tomcat lib folder, but maybe there is another place those should go. Any help/hints would be greatly appreciated. • Oracle 11gR2 exp does not export some tables

  I have an Oracle 11g (11.2.0.1) Database running on Linux (x64). Within the database I have a schema and 33 tables for it. When I log in via sqlplus I can list all the tables via SELECT OBJECT_NAME FROM USER_OBJECTS WHERE OBJECT_TYPE = 'TABLE'; But when I export the Tablespace using exp ... BUFFER=65536 FULL=N COMPRESS=N CONSISTENT=Y TABLESPACES=... FILE=... Then it only exports 24 of the 33 tables. I have tried to export the missing tables via exp ... TABLES=<missing_table> ... But then I get an error: EXP-00011: NPSMIGRO2_CM.DEFAULT_USR_ATTR_VALUES does not exist How can I find out what's wrong here? How can I export all the tables?

• Oracle Internet Directory - Required Schemas already loaded

  After a successful installation of Oracle Internet Directories (OID) I attemped to remove and re-install it with a different configuration. First I ran ./runInstaller.sh -deinstall from the OID middleware directory to uninstall. Then i ran the installer again but it complained on the Specify Schema Database step. Upon connecting to the database, the installer threw: INST-5174: Required schemas are already loaded in the specified database. I connected to the target database and removed the OID schemas I knew of SQL> drop user ODS cascade; SQL> drop user ODSSM cascade; That didn't not work and the error still appears. What steps am I missing? Note: The Database is 11g and it was brand new before installing OID so there is no other data select * from all_users doesn't show any other schemas related to OID from what I can tell, the latest user creation date is OCT 2010

  Hi all, I'm currently using Oracle 11g on RHEL5. I'm digging to see what are in the archived log files. After I query from v$logmnr_contents, I see many transactions of UNSUPPORTED operation. What do these unsupported transactions mean? I think that it's the cause that make my database generates lots of archived logs. Moreover, I'm using global temporary table for generating reports. I discover that when I insert and delete from those temporary table, it also records in the archived log file. How to do to reduce those recorded transactions? Regards, Sarith

  I have two Oracle 9i 64 bit servers, dev and prod. Calling a procedure from a c# app with parameter array binding, prod executes the procedure simultaneously for each value in the parameter array, but dev executes for each value serially. So, if the sproc does: select count(*) into cnt from mytable where id = 123; if cnt = 0 then insert into mytable (id) values (123); end if; Assuming the table initially does not have an id = 123 row. Dev gets cnt = 0 for the first array parameter value, then 1 for each of the subsequent. Prod gets cnt = 0 for all array parameter values and inserts id 123 for each. Is this a configuration difference, an illusion due to speed difference, something else?

  Hi, In the company I work for we are heavy users of vmware machines. Almost all our projects are developed inside a virtual environment up to the point where we have to deploy them into a production system. While in development, some colleagues of mine deleted the redo log files for Oracle in the hopes of gaining some free space. Now they are unable to start the database instance. Is there a way of generating a fresh new redo log so that the instance can be started? This is urgent and even though I'm currently googling for an answer I have yet to find it. Thanks in advance.

  What is the correct way to set the optimizer index cost adj parameter for Oracle. As a developer I have observed huge performance improvements as this parameter is lowered. Common queries are reduced from 2 seconds to 200ms. There are lots of warnings on the net that lowering this value will cause dire issues with the database, but no detail is given on what will start going wrong. I am currently only seeing only an upside, much improved application performance and no downside. I need to better understand the possible negative repercussions of adjusting these parameters.

  Hi All, I had a user in my oracle DB with some 'x' password for sometime. Without notifying my team I changed the password to 'y'. But my team members tried to connect to the machine with the old passowrd 'x' and as the limit was set, the user account got locked. I know how to set the resource limit for the login.   Direct shot to foot moment... While setting-up individual non-admin accts for MSSQLSERVER services, I temporarily set Server service login to Local System account. I remembered later that: SQL Server Configuration Manager performs additional configuration such as setting permissions in the Windows Registry so that the new account can read the SQL Server settings. Plus it was working earlier. Im running on Redhat EL 5 Thanks.
