• Trouble Letting Users Get to Certain Sites through Squid Proxy

  We have Squid running on a RHEL server. We want to block users from getting to Facebook, other than a couple specific sites, like our organization's page. Unfortunately, I can't get those specific pages unblocked without allowing ALL of Facebook through. [squid.conf] # Local users: acl local_c src 192.168.0.0/16 # HTTP & HTTPS: acl Safe_ports port 80 443 # File containing blocked sites, including Facebook: acl blocked dst_dom_regex "/etc/squid/blocked_content" # Whitelist: acl whitelist url_regex "/etc/squid/whitelist" # I do know that order matters: http_access allow local_c whitelist http_access allow local_c !blocked http_access deny all [blocked_content] .porn_site.com .porn_site_2.com [...] facebook.com [whitelist] facebook.com/pages/Our-Organization/2828242522 facebook.com/OurOrganization facebook.com/media/set/ facebook.com/photo.php www.facebook.com/OurOrganization My biggest weakness is regular expressions, so I'm not 100% sure about if this is all correct. If I remove the "!blocked" part of the http_access rule, all of Facebook works. If I remove "facebook.com" from the blocked_content file, all of Facebook works. Right now, visiting facebook.com/OurOrganization gives a "The website declined to show this webpage / HTTP 403" error in Internet Explorer, and "Error 111 (net::ERR_TUNNEL_CONNECTION_FAILED): Unknown error" in Chrome. WhereGoes.com tells me the URL redirects for that URL goes like this: facebook.com/OurOrganization -- [301 Redirect] -- http://www.facebook.com/OurOrganization -- [302 Redirect] -- https://www.facebook.com/OurOrganization I tried turning up the debug traffic out of squid using "debug_options ALL,6" but I can't narrow anything down in /var/log/access.log and /var/log/cache.log. I know to issue "squid -k reconfigure" whenever I make changes to any files.

• Dropbox picture sync: Skip RAW files?

  I like the convenience of having Dropbox keep track of my photos because it tends to work with my devices over 3G (I am often tethering to my phone with my iPad and Macbook) as well as Wifi, but it's a waste of network traffic to sync the raw files from my camera or memory card. It clutters up the dropbox list and the files are just huge. Is there a way to configure the Dropbox client so that it ignores a certain file extension for the picture sync? Also, I suspect that if I just go and delete the raw files, that the next time I plug in the memory card and tell Dropbox to sync, it will re-download the raw files. Which would be terribad. I could switch to iCloud for Photo Stream, I suppose, but there will be no access via 3G that way. And I've already got years of experience with Dropbox so I know it's going to just work. I think any method that works for filtering files to exclude from sync on Dropbox in general should work here too. Edit: Wow there are 19k votes for this exact request.

• Is there any way to get spotlight or media browser in OSX (Snow Leopard) to index and recognize meta

  It seems silly to go to all the trouble to assign "Face" data to thousands of photos, but not make it possible to use that data to locate them outside of that application. I know that that metadata is stored in the "library" database for Aperture/iphoto, rather than on the actual files (which is too bad). And I can even potentially see why it might create challenges for spotlight to use it, since spotlight if presumably a file index system, not a media organizer, but surely the media browser used across the other OSX apps is intended to use it? The media browser's whole purpose seems to be to let you easily locate and reference the items you organize in one of the ilife apps (iphoto or Aperture, in this case) from the others (say, imovie, or Mail). It's particularly vexing since the photo app on the iphone sorts by faces by default. Additionally, the mac-based media browser does access smart albums and folders, so you could establish a workaround by creating a smart album for each "face" or place, or tag, and access them that way, but it seems like there must be an easier way. Am I missing something?

• How to perform this Windows 7 permissions change on many files via GUI or command line

  After using my external hard drive on another Windows 7 computer to tweak photos with Windows Live Photo Gallery then upload them to Facebook I found the modified images were now not visible on the original Windows 7 computer. I'm not sure if the things I tried to get it working subsequently changed anything, but I do know this is the sequence of actions that makes the permissions of the modified files match those of the unmodified files: Right click on broken image file, select "Properties" On the "Security" tab press the "Advanced" button In the "Permissions" tab press the "Continue" button with the shield icon on it Tick the box marked "Include inheritable permissions from this object's parent Click the "Remove" button to remove the only current entry "Type: Allow, Name: Administrators (XYZ\Administrators), Permission: Full control, Inherited From: OK on the "Permissions" tab. OK on the "Security" tab. Now this same procedure does not work at the folder level. It results in "access denied" dialogs. I'm looking for some way to perform this exact modification on all the images I edited on the other computer. I'm happy to use the Windows GUI in Explorer or any other included tools. I'm happy to use the Windows command line. I'd prefer not to use a third-party tool since I'd have to be satisfied it's not doing anything else. I'm not looking for a different way to change permissions to other settings to make an external drive full of photos editable on multiple computers. At least not in this question.

  I've searched serverfault and found this question pop-up quite a bit. Unfortunately others problems aren't exactly like mine, and because I'm a true beginner I wanted some more "specific to me" help. If you don't mind. I just set-up a new computer for a user. Copied over her auto-populate and archive emails. Her email, for the most part, works fine. But when she tries to send anything to [email protected] she gets the #550 5.1.1 error. If she uses the exchange webapp she does not have the issue. I can send email to BSMITH, and so can everyone else. The user, as far as I can tell from the EMC reports, is the only person having emails sent back to them and only from BSMITH. I have googled the crap out of this, and attempted some of the solutions to no avail. I've looked for the bmith account in the disabled accounts and copied and attempted to add "IMCEAEX-_O=CHILD+20STUDY+20CENTER_OU=FIRST+20ADMINISTRATIVE+20GROUP_CN=RECIPIENTS_CN=BSMITH@mydomain.com" as an X500 email. I honestly am just following instructions though and I don't really understand what it is I'm doing.   Basically, I have a large body of assorted media (text, images, flash files, archives, folders, etc...) and I'm attempting to organize it. Windows Explorer has a rating column, but there seems to be no way to modify the rating of the files short of opening them in their type-specific software (e.g. Media player, or Photo viewer). However, this does not work when the file is of an unsupported type (.rar, .swf ...), or a directory. I'd be more than willing to consider a file-manager replacement (I've alreadly looked at quite a few, Directory Opus, Total Commander, etc...), or even a solution that stores the rating metadata in a hidden file in each folder, or a separate database. The one real critical requirement is the ability to sort by rating, and being filetype-agnostic. Basically, is there any way to categorize a large collection of assorted files by rating that will work with any file type, including directories? - Ideally, there would be an easy way to add arbitrary columns to windows explorer, and edit them directly. However, there seems to be no way to do this. The rating column is the next best thing.

• Why still use JPG compression? [closed]

  Back when the JPG image format was introduced, it made a lot of sense to reduce the file size, even accepting a loss in image quality, because files were being downloaded over a slow and expensive modem connection. In today's world, file size is no longer a concern, at least not regarding JPG where it seems silly to save 45kB on a photo. But my image editing apps still prompt me for the desired compression level when I save a file. Does it still make sense to go with the default 85? Why should I not crank it up to 100 for all files? Update based on comments: For web work, I might use PNG instead. But every smartphone and camera produces JPG files. The question arises when I save these edits. Audience is my own harddisk. We're talking photos, 2-5MB apiece. Chroma, subsampling, DCT - sorry, never heard of it. I'm a home user, not Photoshop guru. For the record, I use Paint Shop Pro on Win, and Gimp on Linux.

• What apps can you only get on Mac and not Windows?

  What apps do you absolutely have to use a Mac to run, and there are no decent Windows PC equivalent? This is not a religious war. Please be specific and practical It doesn't have to be a direct 1-2-1 comparison, but overall usefulness to the task I'll start off with a few: KeyNote -- the animations are quite cool and not available in PowerPoint iTune's photo sync -- on Windows it makes copy of all the photos you want to sync, effectively double the space taken up by your photos. On a Mac it's easier as long as you use iPhoto Keychain -- a centralized password manager tied to the OS. The benefit of this is you don't have to set a Master Password (like Firefox) which you need to enter when starting the browser. And it doesn't reveal your password (like Chrome, which makes no effort in hiding the password you have stored in Options) Time Machine -- 0-configuration backup in the background. Easy interface for restoring a file, or even just a contact in the address book. Text-to-speech -- works in any program, and sounds better than Windows computer voice Quick View -- press space bar to preview a file. Windows95 had quick view, but was removed.

• Bing Desktop not updating the wallpaper anymore

  For some reason, first my workstation and then my tablet stopped updating the wallpaper. First I thought it was my company that was avoiding the app to work properly but then I started noticing that the app itself is a mess: It has two storage and formats for the wallpapers: C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Local\Microsoft\BingDesktop\en-US\Apps\Wallpaper_5386c77076d04cf9a8b5d619b4cba48e\VersionIndependent\images with a #####.jpg (single number) image format & C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Local\Microsoft\BingDesktop\themes with a ####-##-##.jpg (date) image format. I read here that deleting the themes folder it will get remade with the new images, and it worked. However those are not the files used by the Wallpaper app and deleting the images folder won't get the same result. I have added Bing Desktop to the Firewall white list and the issue is still there. Any ideas? Currently I'm using DisplayFusion to place the wallpaper manually because the company doesn't allow change the wallpapers (policies). Note: I wrote to the DisplayFusion developers to suggest adding a feature to support Bing Wallpapers. • Image Management System with Different Levels of Access

  I work in the graphics department for a real estate brokerage, and we deal with a lot of photos. Agents take the photos, upload them to me, I touch up and standardize the photos, then I add them to an in-house server for future use by the graphics dept. I'd like to make the "sanitized" photo files available to the agents to use when they want, but I don't want the agents poking around the graphics department's files (things get misplaced, renamed and messed up in a hurry). What would be perfect is if we could create a read-only "mirror" (correct term?) of that server that could be accessed by the agents as needed, but which wouldn't feed back into our "sanitized" file system. Edit: I'm looking for an automatic solution... manually posting the files to two separate locations seems like an inelegant solution when working digitally. Edit: I'm trying to avoid any access barriers to the public (dirty) file system (however it's finally implemented). There are 40-50 real estate agents who need to access these files, half of whom can't reliably download an email attachment.

• Picasa duplicates everything into a `$My Pictures` folder.

  My parents have a Windows XP laptop running Picasa, Dutch version of both. It's configured to put imported photos in C:\Documents and Settings\user\Mijn documenten\Mijn afbeeldingen, which is Windows XP's default My Pictures folder localized to Dutch. A while back I noticed disk space was going much faster than it should be. Turns out there was a Documents and Settings\user\Mijn documenten\$My Pictures pretty much the same size as the original one. This was well over a year ago. I figured it to be an internationalization bug, the $My Pictures thing looks like a placeholder that didn't get resolved. I figured it'd get fixed soon. It didn't. I threw out Picasa, tediously cleaned up the mess it left behind and replaced it by Windows Live Photo Gallery. My parents found WLPG to be unworkable and asked to get Picasa back. I reinstalled it, by now it's at 3.8.0 (build 117.29, 0). Wouldn't you have it, the mystery $My Pictures folder is back, 25GB of disk space has evaporated and it's the same mess it used to be. What's going on here? How do I stop it doing this?

• Problem running iPhone application on iPhone from Xcode (and in Instruments)

  Hi I have a problem running one application on the iPhone from Xcode (or Instruments). When I try to run the app I get the error message Failed to upload XXX.app in the bottom left corner of Xcode. The strange thing is it actually uploaded the app to the iPhone but it doesn't start it (after this I can start the app by hand on the iPhone). So without being able to start the app from Xcode or instruments I have no chance of debugging/performance testing. Any advice on what might be going wrong here? The iPhone console shows me this: Thu Oct 1 14:25:18 unknown mobile_installationd[1976] <Error>: 00808e00 install_embedded_profile: Skipping the installation of the embedded profile Thu Oct 1 14:25:23 unknown SpringBoard[25] <Warning>: Reloading and rendering all application icons. • CFBundleVersion error even though new version is higher

  When trying to upload an upgrade binary to iTunes Connect, I am getting this error message even though I have updated CFBundleVersion in my info.plist file to a higher value (and checked the package contents after building it to be sure it copied over). I have already successfully submitted a different app upgrade by doing this same method, but for whatever reason it won't work this time. Any insights or is this an iTunes bug? The binary you uploaded was invalid. The key CFBundleVersion in the Info.plist file must contain a higher version than that of the previously uploaded version.

• Google Maps API vs Multimap/Bing Maps API

  I want to know if anyone who has experience of using both the Google Maps API and the Multimap API can give a good reason as to why one is better than the other - or maybe a list of pros and cons? I will be working on a complete re-development of a site which currently uses the Multimap (Classic) API and want to consider the possibility of using Google Maps API instead of Multimap (now MS Bing), but I need a compelling reason to justify this decision. The site currently provides a search mechanism allowing users to search for addresses using postcode/partial postcode or city. The current system has a sqlserver database back-end containing full address details and also uploads (geocodes this information to Multimap with a daily scheduled task). I'm wondering if it's possible with the Google API to avoid the need for the daily upload and just use it's geocoding API instead (though this is limited by Google's restriction of a certain number of geocoding requests per day).

  Hi Guys, I'm having few doubts on implementing file downloads. I'm creating an app where I use attachment_fu with Amazon s3 to upload files. Things are working pretty well so far on uploading side. Now its the time to start the file downloads. Here is what I need, a logged in user search and browse for Images and they should able to add the files in to a download basket (Let's say its a Download Shopping Cart). Finally the user should be able to download these file(s) from S3 probably as a zipped file. Is there any plugin/gem where I can use for this?

But, after following guidelines for making modules in these places: Distributing Python Modules The Hitchhiker’s Guide to Packaging it's not clear to me how to support multiple source distributions for different versions of Python, and it's not clear if/how PyPI could support it. I envisage I would have separate code for: 2.x 2.6 (maybe, as a special case to use the new buffer API) 3.x How is it possible to set up a Python module in PyPI so that someone can do: easy_install modulename and it will install the right thing whether the user is using 2.x or 3.x?

In this second page I want to 1.)extract the uploaded zip file. 2.)read some content from the extracted file(s) and allow the user to change/edit them 3.)save the user changes in the files. 4.)zip the files again and save it in another destination. Please suggest me a rough outline of a solution as I am stuck in the phase in which I get the uploaded file and re-direct the user to the second jsp.

• Google Chrome: XMLHttpRequest.send() not working while doing POST.

  I'm working on an application that allows the user to send a file using a form (a POST request), and that executes a series of GET requests while that file is being uploaded to gather information about the state of the upload. It works fine in IE and Firefox, but not so much in Chrome and Safari. The problem is that even though send() is called on the XMLHttpRequest object, nothing is being requested as can be seen in Fiddler. To be more specific, an event handler is placed on the "submit" event of the form, that places a timeout function call on the window: window.setTimeout(startPolling, 10); and in this function "startPolling" sequence is started that keeps firing GET requests to receive status updates from a web service that returns text/json that can be used to update the UI. Is this a limitation (perhaps security-wise?) on WebKit based browsers? Is this a Chrome bug? (I'm seeing the same behaviour in Safari though).

• Getting ANT to scp only new/changed files

  I would like to optimize my scp deployment which currently copies all files to only copy files that have changed since the last build. I believe it should be possible with the current setup somehow, but I don't know how to do this. I have the following: Project/src/blah/blah/ <---- files I am editing (mostly PHP in this case, some static assets) Project/build <------- I have a local build step that I use to copy the files to here I have an scp task right now that copies all of Project/build out to a remote server when I need it. Is it possible to somehow take advantage of this extra "build" directory to accomplish what I want -- meaning I only want to upload the "diff" between src/** and build/**. Is it possible to somehow retrieve this as a fileset in ANT and then scp that? I do realize that what it means is that if I somehow delete/mess around with files on the server in between, the ANT script would not notice, but for me this is okay.
