• Optimize website for touch devices

  On a touch device like iPhone/iPad/Android it can be difficult to hit a small button with your finger. There is no cross-browser way to detect touch devices with CSS media queries that I know of. So I check if the browser has support for javascript touch events. Until now, other browsers haven't supported them, but the latest Google Chrome on dev channel enabled touch events (even for non touch devices). And I suspect other browser makers will follow, since laptops with touch screens are comming. This is the test I use: function isTouchDevice() { try { document.createEvent("TouchEvent"); return true; } catch (e) { return false; } } The problem is that this only tests if the browser has support for touch events, not the device. Does anyone know of The Correct[tm] way of giving touch devices better user experience? Other than sniffing user agent. Mozilla has a media query for touch devices. But I haven't seen anything like it in any other browser: https://developer.mozilla.org/En/CSS/Media_queries#-moz-touch-enabled Update: I want to avoid using a separate page/site for mobile/touch devices. The solution has to detect touch devices with object detection or similar from JavaScript, or include a custom touch-CSS without user agent sniffing! The main reason I asked, was to make sure it's not possible today, before I contact the css3 working group.

• Debugging a Google Web Toolkit application that has an error when deployed on Google App Engine

  I have a Google Web Toolkit application that I am deploying to Google App Engine. In the deployed application, I am getting a JavaScript error Uncaught TypeError: Cannot read property 'f' of null. This sounds like the JavaScript equivalent of a Java NullPointerException. The problem is that the GWT JavaScript is obfuscated, so it's impossible to debug in the browser and I can't reproduce the same problem in hosted mode where I could use the Java debugger. I think the reason I'm only seeing the error on the deployed application is that the database I'm using on the GAE server is triggering something differently than the test database I'm using during testing and development. So, any ideas about the best way to proceed? I've thought of the following things: Deploy a non-obsfucated version of my application. Despite a lot of Googling, I can't figure out how to do this using the automatic deploy script provided with the Google Eclipse Plugin. Does anyone know? Download and copy my GAE data to the local server Somehow point my development code to use the GAE server for data instead of the local test database. This seems like the best idea... Can anyone suggest how to proceed here? Finally, is there a way to catch these JavaScript errors on the production server and log them somewhere? Without logging, I won't have anyway to know if my users are having errors that don't occur on the server. The GWT.log() function is automatically stripped out of the production code...

• BackgroundWorker and foreach loop

  I have to process a loop with backgroundworkers. Before I start a new loop iteration I need to wait until the provious backgroundworker has finished. A while loop inside my foreach loop with isbusy flag doesn's seem like a good idea to me. • ObjectDisposedException when .Show()'ing a form that shouldn't be disposed.

  ive checked out some of the other questions and obviously the best solution is to prevent the behavior that causes this issue in the first place, but the problem is very intermittent, and very un-reproduceable. I basically have a main form, with sub forms.   I used a WCF REST template to build a WCF service library to create PUT and GET calls. PUT method works fine sending my blob to a database. On the GET, I want to be able to access the web service directly and display the results from a stored procedure as a dataset and bind this to a gridview. The stored procedure is a simple select statement, returning three of the four columns from the table.   I've got a website that has windows authentication enable on it. From a page in the website, the users have the ability to start a service that does some stuff with the database. It works fine for me to start the service because I'm a local admin on the server. But I just had a user test it and they can't get the service started. My question is: Does anyone know of a way to get a list of services on a specified computer by name using a different windows account than the one they are currently logged in with? I really don't want to add all the users that need to start the service into a windows group and set them all to a local admin on my IIS server..... • File.Move does not inherit permissions from target directory?

  In case something goes wrong in creating a file, I've been writing to a temporary file and then moving to the destination. Something like: var destination = @"C:\foo\bar.txt"; var tempFile = Path.GetTempFileName(); using (var stream = File.OpenWrite(tempFile)) { // write to file here here } string backupFile = null; try { var dir = Path.GetDirectoryName(destination); if (!Directory.Exists(dir)) { Directory.CreateDirectory(dir); Util.SetPermissions(dir); } if (File.Exists(destination)) { backupFile = Path.Combine(Path.GetTempPath(), new Guid().ToString()); File.Move(destination, backupFile); } File.Move(tempFile, destination); if (backupFile != null) { File.Delete(backupFile); } } catch(IOException) { if(backupFile != null && !File.Exists(destination) && File.Exists(backupFile)) { File.Move(backupFile, destination); } } The problem is that the new "bar.txt" in this case does not inherit permissions from the "C:\foo" directory. Yet if I create a file via explorer/notepad etc directly in the "C:\foo" there's no issues, so I believe the permissions are correctly set on "C:\foo". Update Found Inherited permissions are not automatically updated when you move folders, maybe it applies to folders as well. Now looking for a way to force an update of file permissions. Is there a better way overall of doing this?

• Capturing Drupal7 DOM content before page load for comparison

  We have an MU (Multisite) installation of Drupal7 here at work, and are trying to temporarily hold back the swarm of bots we receive until we get a chance to load our content. I wrote a quick and and dirty script to send 503 headers if we find a certain criteria in Xpath (This can ALSO be done as a strpos/preg_match if DOM is not formed). In order to get the ball rolling though I need to figure out how to either A) Hijack the Drupal7 bootstrap and pull all content through this filter below B) ob_flush content through the filter before content is loaded The issue that I am having is figuring out exactly where I can catch the content at? I thought that index.php in Drupal7 would be the suspect, but I'm a little confused as to where or how I should capture the contents. • Why two subprocesses created by Java behave differently?

Both executables will continuously print out "Hello World" to stdout. When cmd is the C++ executable, the pid is printed out to console but the subprocess gets killed as soon as main() returns. However, when I call the .jar executable in cmd, the subprocess does not get killed, which is the desired behavior. I don't understand why same Java code, with different executables can behave so differently. How should I modify my code so that I could have persistent subprocesses in Java. Newbie in this field. • Convert InputStream to String with encoding given in stream data

  Hi, My input is a InputStream which contains an XML document. Encoding used in XML is unknown and it is defined in the first line of XML document. From this InputStream, I want to have all document in a String. To do this, I use a BufferedInputStream to mark the beginning of the file and start reading first line. I read this first line to get encoding and then I use an InputStreamReader to generate a String with the correct encoding. It seems that it is not the best way to achieve this goal because it produces an OutOfMemory error. • Windows Server TCP Client application in c# Stops working after a while

  I am developping an application in C# Net framework 2.0. It is basicly a service application with a tcp client class. It works for about 20 minutes then stops recieving information from the server. -- Server side Client is still connected and the client side its still connected but stops receiving information from the server. • Why MSMQ won't send a space character?

  I'm exploring MSMQ services, and I wrote a simple console client-server application that sends each of the client's keystrokes to the server. Whenever hit a control character (DEL, ESC, INS, etc) the server understandably throws an error. However, whenever I type a space character, the server receives the packet but doesn't throw an error and doesn't display the space. • General JDBC Setup

  So I have a MySQL database set up on a Debian server and it works fine from a phpMyAdmin client. I'm currently working on a project to write a Java server that would be able to use the MySQL database that is already on this server through a JDBC connection. I've looked at many tutorials and documentations but all of them seem to just explain how to do client-side code, but I have yet to figure out how to even successfully open a JDBC connection to the server. As far as I am concerned, I believe that program has the drivers properly set up because it's not crashing anymore (I simply direct the Java Build Path of my program to the Connector/J provided by MySQL). I'm sure this is a problem with the server because when I intentionally misspell localhost, or an IP address, the program crashes within 20 seconds. This just hangs there forever. Sorry about this wall of text, but my final question is if anyone has any information what I should do or install on the server to get this to work? Thank you so much!

The idea is this: If a User has Excel Open, if he has the file I'm interested in open... get that Excel instance and do whatever I want to do... But I don't to close his File after I'm done... I want him to keep working on it, the problem is that when he closes Excel...
