• MDB2 With SQL Express 2008

  Hi all, So basically here's my problem. I'm looking for a solution to allow us to connect with SQL Express 2008, while still using MDB2 as our database abstraction layer. I need something like this, mainly because we still need to be able to use MySQL and Postgres (and ORMs seem to be not an option at this point in time). Preferably, there would be a solution that works for both PHP5.2 and PHP5.3. At first I went down the php_mysql extension road... it seems, though, as though that is not available in PHP 5.3. php_pdo_mssql doesn't seem to be usable with MDB2, so that seems to be out. Finally, there's the MS developed 'SQLSRV' extension, and while it seems as though there was work on a MDB2 'extension' for it at one point, it doesn't seem to have ever made it into the main branch. Please... does anyone have any solutions for me?

• How to upgrade Compiz to 0.9.8 in 12.04?

  For a very long time, I'm experiencing this bug in Compiz. It makes my windows flash, when rotating the desktop cube. None of the animations work properly execpt the Wobbly windows. However the temporary fix I found on the bug page helped me to reduce the effects, but it's not 100% perfect. Now they have totally fixed the bug in Compiz 0.9.8 for Quantal. I really need to get the official fix on my Ubuntu 12.04. Don't the LTS versions get bug fixes? Sometimes my desktop cube/cylinder appears like this : None of this happened in Lucid Lynx :( Thanks for having a look.....

  A few times in the past I've hit a major wall and simply couldn't progress with a certain aspect of an app as Im a beginner and still learning the ropes (Objective-C specifically). I was curious if anyone knows of any services which support programmers in real time, paid or free and will over video, audio or text chat sit and work a problem out till its fixed and look through your code? I understand Stackoverflow does a super job at this! However Im in need of something a little more tailored where someone can spend a little time to sit and look and what Im dealing with and delve into my a code if need be. Thanks.

• Screen location of NSToolbarItem

  How can I get the on-screen location of a button in a toolbar? That is getting the rectangle frame of an NSToolbarItem? The [NSToolbarItem view] method seems to always return nil whenever the toolbar item is only a simple action button and thus I couldn't use the normal NSView methods to pinpoint the toolbar button's on-screen position. Background I'm trying to use Matt Gemmell's MAAttachedWindow component to point to a specific toolbar button. The component requires an NSPoint object to "point" the user to a location on the screen. • Github Workflow: Pushing small fix branches to remote, or keep them local?

  In Scott Chacon's workflow (explained eg in this SO answer), with essentially two silos (development, and master), if, say I have a small bug to fix (e.g. can be fixed with a few characters) is the optimal way of doing that: a) branch off of development a branch called e.g. fix_123. Push this branch to origin as I work on it. When it's done, code-reviewed, whatever, merge into development and push development to origin. b) Same as above, but without pushing fix_123 to origin.

  I am a meganoob in iPhone Application programming. All I want to do is make an application with a single button. When you press the button, it plays an audio file. The button is just two images, one for the normal state and one for the pressed state. I have no clue how to get from point A to point B, it seems so straightforward in web design, why can't it be like that for this too? Anyone out there willing to drop some hints?

• LINQ method chaining and granular error handling

  I have a method which can be written pretty neatly through method chaining: return viewer.ServerReport.GetParameters() .Single(p => p.Name == Convention.Ssrs.RegionParamName) .ValidValues .Select(v => v.Value); However I'd like to be able to do some checks at each point as I wish to provide helpful diagnostics information if any of the chained methods returns unexpected results. To achieve this, I need to break up all my chaining and follow each call with an if block. It makes the code a lot less readable. Ideally I'd like to be able to weave in some chained method calls which would allow me to handle unexpected outcomes at each point (e.g. throw a meaningful exception such as new ConventionException("The report contains no parameter") if the first method returns an empty collection). Can anyone suggest a simple way to achieve such a thing?

  Hi, I have a scenario: There is a Slideshow running in PowerPoint. I want to control the movement [Next and Previous] of the slides. Of course it is possible with the [ and < button on the keyboard], but is there any way in which I can have a custom application listening to the Next and Previous controls? As in, my custom application has nothing but 2 buttons, next and previous, when I click either, the button's event handler should pass the control to the Power Point Application running the slideshow. And thus, the powerpoint will move the slideshow back or forward? Somewhat similar to the way remote, wireless Power Point Presenters work on the s/w end. Thank You.

  I'm trying to create an auto generated post excerpt from the current page's post content using a function in my theme's header file. The post excerpt will be used as the page's meta description. Can someone give me an idea of how you might go about this once you've got the post content into a string variable? The somewhat tricky part is that, in order to predict a viable stopping point for the post excerpt, I'd like to specify that the cutoff point be the end of the first paragraph of text. And for that reason, it does not make sense to load the entire post content into the string I'm using. Can I grab the first paragraph without having to load the entire post content string? And I'm not certain how to test for that in php. Would regex be the only way?

• Static Application Switcher is empty after show dekstop

  Im using the Static Application Switcher to configure my ALT + TAB to cycle trough all applications not grouped. So far so good. Then I press Super + D to "hide all normal windows" (show desktop). This setting is from Keyboard - Shortcuts - Navigation. This also works BUT After hide all normal windows has been activated and I press ALT + TAB nothing comes up. I suspect they have been hidden so well that the Application Switcher does not longer sees them. Anyone know if this can be fixed trough settings somewhere?

• F10 isn't working properly in VS2005

  When project is stopped (not in the debugging state) and you press F10, normally the debugging session starts and VS stops at the entry point (e.g. Program.Main). That always worked for me in VS2005 and works OK in VS2008. But recently that stopped working in my VS2005 - the project just runs as if I pressed F5, so I have to place a breakpoint at Program.Main when I need to stop at the entry point. Though it continues to work as it should in my VS2008. I suspect, that's because I installed Reflector add-in and it changed some settings in VS2005, but I just can't find out which settings. Also, disabling that add-in has no effect on my issue :-( Please help, thanks in advance.

• VS 2008 Profiler - Caller/Callee view showing bottom of stack

  Hello, I am currently trying to profile a class contained in a different assembly. To do this I created a small console application which calls into the public entry point of the class I want to profile. This enrty point is called Run(). This is working fine when I run my Console application in Debug mode and I can step into the Run() method. The Run() method calls a variety of other methods in its own assembly and other assemblies. However, when I create a new profiler of type "Instrumentation" in VS 2008, and run the profiler, the report shows my Main() function calling Run(), but in turn, when viewing the Caller/Callee report for my Run() method the report shows that the Run() method is the bottom of the stack. This is clearly not the case - could anyone please suggest why this is happening? Thanks.

• What is the most effective way to add functionality to unfamiliar, structurally unsound code?

  This is probably something everyone has to face during the development sooner or later. You have an existing code written by someone else, and you have to extend it to work under new requirements. Sometimes it's simple, but sometimes the modules have medium to high coupling and medium to low cohesion, so the moment you start touching anything, everything breaks. And you don't feel that it's fixed correctly when you get the new and old scenarios working again. One approach would be to write tests, but in reality, in all cases I've seen, that was pretty much impossible (reliance on GUI, missing specifications, threading, complex dependencies and hierarchies, deadlines, etc). So everything sort of falls back to good ol' cowboy coding approach. But I refuse to believe there is no other systematic way that would make everything easier. Does anyone know a better approach, or the name of the methodology that should be used in such cases?

• Should I put an app I wrote on my résumé even if it has low ratings?

  Last summer I wrote an iPhone app for the Toronto Film Festival. The development was pretty rushed, and the design goals were changed multiple times. In particular, the central film list view controller was redesigned three times in the week before launch. I forgot to update one of my functions to match the changed design, and the app shipped with a serious bug. While the app was fairly popular, this bug crippled the app and it got a lot of poor reviews. I fixed the bug as soon as I got a crash report, but it got stuck in the iTunes review process for the duration of the film festival. Should I put this app on my résumé? The app has poor ratings and most of the reviews mention crashes, but it's also the only work experience I have. Additionally, how should I approach this topic in an interview?   I am trying to create python bindings to a vala library using pygi with gobject introspection. However, I am having trouble generating the GIR files (that I am planning to compile to typelib files subsequently). According to the documentation valac should support generating GIR files.   Some time ago I’ve described the issues that I’ve had since a new version of Read It Later, named Pocket, was introduced.I’ve waited with hope for a new upgrade, but I had a huge disappointment with the latest version 16 June 2012. It didn’t fixed any of the two major problems, that I  experienced since new Pocket was introduced-  1. iPad app still didn’t show many of the saved links. 2. ability to rename articles on iPad still wasn’t restored.I’ve posted the message into their forum. They did not show my comment on their forum( I would name it censorship, not moderation), but a few days ago I’ve received an email, recommending “try logging out of the app on your iPad, and back in again.” Their suggestion helped,  but I don’t understand, why it is not posted as a recommendation on their support site.So I decided to try InstAPaper on my iPad, Previously I’ve used it for Kindle. I never considered it before on iPad, because there were no free demo and I was very satisfied with RIL free and then RIL Pro. Currently InstAPaper cost $3, so the price is not an issue.I’ve checked that it has most of features that I am using(e.g. renaming, folders) and I am quite happy with it now. Actually I am using Pocket (or RIL free) for old bookmarks( I have 1000+ stored on my iPad) and for new bookmarks I am using InstAPaper.Having a solid experience with RIL/Pocket I’ve created a list of suggestions to Marco Arment to implement.1. Some pages stored in InstAPaper have removed essential sections of the text. E.g in many blogs comments are not stored in  InstAPaper. Some pages lost almost all of important links (e.g. http://www.lib.rus.ec/a/32416 -sorry, in Russian). RIL/Pocket has 2 modes to store offline- Web view and Article view. Web View includes all links/images of the original page, but it’s very reliable. Article view suppose to strip unrelated information, but often corrupts the content. I prefer to use offline Web view.InstAPaper should also support offline Web view, in case if stripped view removes important part of content.2.  Black full screen Saving on iPad Safari is very annoying. After user pressed a bookmark, the saving has some delay and then for a few seconds prevents from reading the text.Would be better to show as message on the top part(as in Pocket ). I am surprised, that  a full screen popup was  implemented recently as a desired feature. 3.There are no comments allowed on http://blog.instapaper.com/. I would prefer to post some of these notes as comments on http://blog.instapaper.com/ rather than write them in my blog and then send link to Marco.(I found recommendation how to add support of comments on tumblr at http://www.tumblr.com/help, but then realized that Marko was the lead developer ofTumblr.)4. Also there is no support forum. If the button in a paid version is visible and enabled, it should  provide  a working functionality, e.g. search in article names only. And leave full-text search for the premium support.9..Copy URL is an important operation and deserves to be in a first level of Action menu, rather than in Share sub-menu.I’ve also have comment re post http://www.marco.org/2011/04/28/removed-instapaper-free. Marco Arment  explained, why he doesn’t provide free version of Instapaper.  I believe that he is loosing essential part of his customers. When I decided which of iPad application to choose, I’ve selected RIL, because I was able to play with free version, and I liked it. I didn’t have a chance to compare RIL and InstAPaper on iPad, so I’ve bought  RIL pro. For a user there is no point to pay even $3 , if there are similar free product, that user can try and see, is it suitable for him/her.I’ve also played with Readability. It doesn’t have folders or tags(which is very important for me), but nicely supports full text search

• Excel string manipulation to check data consistency

  Background information: - There are nearly 7000 individuals and there is data about their performances in one, two or three tests. Every individual has taken the 1st test (let's call it Test M). Some of those who have taken Test M have also taken Test I, and some of those who have taken Test I have also taken Test B. For the first two tests (M and I), students can score grades I, II, or III. Depending on the grades they are awarded points -- 3 for grade I, 2 for II, 1 for III. The last Test B is just a pass or a fail result with no grades. Those passing this test get 1 point, with no points for failure. (Well actually, grades are awarded, but all grades are given a common 1 point). An amateur has entered data to represent these students and their grades in an Excel file. Problem is, this person has done the worst thing possible - he has developed his own notation and entered all test information in a single cell --- and made my life hell. The file originally had two text columns, one for individual's id, and the second for test info, if one could call it that. It's horrible, I know, and I am suffering. In the image, if you see "M-II-2 I-III-1" it means the person got grade II in Test M for 2 points and grade III in Test I for 1 point. Some have taken only one test, some two, and some three. When the file came to me for processing and analyzing the performance of students, I sent it back with instructions to insert 3 additional columns with only the grades for the three tests. The file now looks as follows. Columns C and D represent grades I, II, and III using 1,2 and 3 respectively. Column C is for Test M, column D for Test I. Column E says BA (B Achieved!) if the individual has passed Test B. Now that you have the above information, let's get to the problem. I don't trust this and want to check whether data in column B matches with data in columns C,D and E. That is, I want to examine the string in column B and find out whether the figures in columns C,D and E are correct. All help is really appreciated. P.S. - I had exported this to MySQL via ODBC and that is why you are seeing those NULLs. I tried doing this in MySQL too, and really will accept a MySQL or an Excel solution, I don't have a preference. Edit : - See file with sample data
