  • Control Media via Arduino

    I want to create an application that controls the volume, play next\last, stop\play and things like this (I don't know what they called) like in a keyboard. I have tried to find how to do this with Python\Java but I couldn't find how. The main idea is (if some-one knows what is arduino) to connect it to my PC (Ubuntu) and to get from it signals that gives me values and with this values to be able to change the volume and to do next song\video.     I am looking for a nice way of flattening (splitting) a list of potentially-overlapping numeric ranges. The problem is very similar to that of this question: Fastest way to split overlapping date ranges, and many others.     I just started a job where I'm writing Python after coming from a Java background, and I'm noticing that other developers tend to quote strings using single quotes ('') instead of double quotes (""). For example: line1 = 'This is how strings typically look.' line2 = "Not like this." Is there a particular reason for this other than personal preference? Is this the proper way to be quoting strings?

  • How to run a program as a service (silent)?

    I have a python based server which i start from the terminal. This particular instance of the terminal then gives control to the program, and the program uses it as a kind of logging window, until its closed. Is this normal, or should i somehow try to start the program some other way in which it will simply show as an active process? If i close the terminal from which i started the program, the program dies with it. Thank you

  • Why hasn't C# gained much traction within the opensource community?

    I'm not expecting C# to be on par with say Java or Python in the open source community, but it still surprises me just how far behind it is. 'Multi language' open source repos like google code or github have barely any C# projects in comparison to the other languages I mentioned. I'd like to see C# and .Net shake off that slight corporate feel and move more into the open source arena but I just can't see that happening. I'd be interested to hear peoples opinion on why this might be?

  • why there is no power operator in java / c ++?

    While there is such operator - ** in Python , i was wondering why java and c++ havent got one too. It is easy to make one for classes you define in C++ with operator overloading ( and i believe such thing is possible also in java) , but when talking about primitive types such as int, double and so on , you'll have to use library function like Math.power (and usaully have to cast both to double). So - why not define such operator for primitive types ?

  • alias/function with command line arguments

    I'm tired of typing manage.py startserver 10.211.55.4:4000, so decided to make an alias for that. Only thing is: the port sometime changes. So I did this in bash profile: function runserver() { python manage.py runserver 10.211.55.4:$1 } But then when I call it: runserver 3000, it starts it, but immediately stops saying: "Error: That IP address can't be assigned-to". However if I type the same thing right into command line it works with no complains.

    I have a main window with a Gtk Button named openDialog. If I click on this button another Window (addName) popups. I would like to write a method (or a function, don't know which is the right name in python) in my main window file, called printHi. I would like to run this printHi method (in my main window file), when addName window is destroyed. I tried something like this: def on_addName_destroy(): printHi() But it doesn't work. I'm thinking of something along the lines of bubble tanks, but I think I can roll with pretty much anything that fits the following: Working engine that handles mouvement, objects The fighting system can be done in any way that allows a bare minimum of configuration Scripting should be, preferably, Python Art should be customizable I'm hoping that there is some existing game that I could adapt.     Hello everybody, I am looking into improving my programming skils (actually I try to do my best to suck less each year, as our Jeff Atwood put it), so I was thinking into reading stuff about metaprogramming and self explanatory code. I am looking for something like an idiot's guide to this (free books for download, online resources). Also I want more than your average wiki page and also something language agnostic or preferably with Java examples. Do you know of such resources that will allow to efficiently put all of it into prectice (I know experience has a lot to say in all of this but i kind of want to build experience avoiding the flow bad decitions - experience - good decitions)?     Hi, when using Python's stock XML tools such as xml.dom.minidom for XML writing, a file would always start off like <?xml version="1.0"?> [...] While this is perfectly legal XML code, and it's even recommended to use the header, I'd like to get rid of it as one of the programs I'm working with has problems here. I can't seem to find the appropriate option in xml.dom.minidom, so I wondered if there are other packages which do allow to neglect the header. Cheers, Nico

  • Segmentation Fault (11) with modwsgi on CentOS 5.7 when running pyramid app

    I'm getting Segmentation fault error when trying to access the "Hello World" pyramid app. This error only occurs when running against CentOS 5.7 setup, but no problem whatsoever when tested against OSX and Arch Linux. Could it be a CentOS specific issue? [error] [client 10.211.55.2] Premature end of script headers: pyramid.wsgi [notice] child pid 31212 exit signal Segmentation fault (11) I have tried to follow the troubleshooting guides posted here http://code.google.com/p/modwsgi/wiki/InstallationIssues which suggests that it might caused by missing Shared Library. A quick check reveals that shared library is not the issue.
