• Raspberry Pi + Azure + Mobile App

  Ongoing project idea. So this is of long running personal interest to build a Mobile App that shows you a push notification/pop up alert, when anyone calls your house phone. So I've taken delivery of a Raspberry Pi. I've ordered a new Crucible Technology Caller ID Box. (arriving soon). I have been writing/learning Python to implement the Listener software. This will in turn push xml messages up to Azure for final delivery via push notifications to an App. iOS app already written to receive the notifications/allow address book additions made up from phone numbers from incoming calls. So this is fusion, R-Pi, Azure, Hardware and iOS. Details to follow as this plan unfolds.

• How can I refactor a code base while others rapidly commit to it?

  I'm on a private project that eventually will become open source. We have a few team members, talented enough with the technologies to build apps, but not dedicated developers who can write clean/beautiful and most importantly long-term maintainable code. I've set out to refactor the code base, but it's a bit unwieldy as someone in the team out in another country I'm not in regular contact with could be updating this totally separate thing. I know one solution is to communicate rapidly or adopt better PM practices, but we're just not that big yet. I just want to clean up the code and merge nicely into what he has updated. Would a branch be a suitable plan? A best-effort-merge? Something else?

• HDMI Audio stops after TV turned off

  After the 12.04 Update my HDMI audio stops working anytime I turn off my 2nd monitor(plasma TV). Graphics card is a Radeon 6800 which has DVI out to 1st monitor, HDMI out to receiver which the TV gets it's Audio/Video. Audio is always via my receiver sound. Things work fine as long as it boots with the TV and Receiver on. Turn off the TV and BART's HDMI audio will go away, and the HDMI option vanishes from the sound menu. I had an occasional HDMI issue with 11.10 but turning on/off the TV would fix the sound. How can I hardcode things so that it always uses HDMI out of audio? I suspect the TV is sending a signal upon that 12.04 is now listening for. Turning the TV back on does NOT resolve this, and I'd suggest having the ability to override this new "feature" via sound menu.

• Is there a cross-platform special directory I can use for game save files?

  I'm developing with LWJGL and Java on a Windows 7 laptop. I've successfully set up saving to the %appdata%\gamename\saves\ or long form c:\users\user\appdata\roaming\gamename\saves\ folder by using File dir = new File(System.getenv("APPDATA") + "\\gamename\\saves\\");. I have hobbyist level experience with Linux, and zero experience with OSX. My game will be fully cross platform. Is System.getenv("APPDATA"); cross platform? If so, where does it point to on Linux or OSX? Is there a best practices alternative that I should use?

Now that we’re in 2011, in an era of modern web standards, it’s time to say goodbye. We'll watch Internet Explorer 6 usage drop to less than 1% worldwide, so more websites can choose to drop support for Internet Explorer 6, saving hours of work for web developers.  Thanks Microsoft!  We've been waiting for this day to come for a long time.  Of course, it would have been nice if IE6 was gone 5 years ago...but who's counting.

• Career Advice: masters degree or work experience [on hold]

  I graduated about four years ago with a degree in mathematics and I currently work as a Software Developer/Business Analyst, but more Business Analyst. I've been working for about 4 years and and I am concerned with my long term career path. I would strongly prefer to do much more software development but to continue on my current path would lead me to an analyst role. I was thinking of getting a masters in computer science to help refocus my career toward core software development. Does anyone have any advice here? Is this a bad idea?

• Evolution and thunderbird sharing same mail data?

  Hi, I have been using Evolution for a quite long and it has downloaded around 1.6GBs of mails from gmail. I want to try thunderbird but I dont want to re download everything again. Is that possible to have both clients sharing same data? I'll make sure I don't use both at the same time if that matters. I'll move to thunderbird fully if I'm happy with it. Problems I face with evolution is that I have to have the GUI running always if I want to get instant alerts and send mail immediately. Also it loads the messages slow and even after I move to the next mail, it slowly downloads all the linked images before moving on.

• When designing a job queue, what should determine the scope of a job?

  We've got a job queue system that'll cheerfully process any kind of job given to it. We intend to use it to process jobs that each contain 2 tasks: Job (Pass information from one server to another) Fetch task (get the data, slowly) Send task (send the data, comparatively quickly) The difficulty we're having is that we don't know whether to break the tasks into separate jobs, or process the job in one go. Are there any best practices or useful references on this subject? Is there some obvious benefit to a method that we're missing? So far we can see these benefits for each method: Split Job lease length reflects job length: Rather than total of two Finer granularity on recovery: If we lose outgoing connectivity we can tell them all to retry The starting state of the second task is saved to job history: Helps with debugging (although similar logging could be added in single task method) Single Single job to be scheduled: Less processing overhead Data not stale on recovery: If the outgoing downtime is quite long, the pending Send jobs could be outdated

• Menus and text boxes look graphically corrupted in 12.10

  If I let my computer run long enough the screen gets glitchy or graphically corrupted only in certain areas i.e. in text related boxes, menus, menu bars, scroll bars, the system monitor window, etc. It becomes difficult to read what I am typing. Its been happening quite often and I can only fix it by restarting the computer, but its only a matter of time before it happens again. Don't know what else to do, its been a thorn in my side for quite some time now and I need a fix soon because its only gets more frequent until I'm rebooting my computer five times a day. • New HDD formating on Ext4 root permission

  OK people good evening, I have this new 80Gb HDD I want to use it as a backup storage for my actual system (14.04) not a server. I formatted it with Gpart but I just can't write in it, when I search for permissions it tells me that only root users can write/create in it, log on as root user and try to change permissions, and I can't do that either. Long have I searched for an answer, looking everywhere but not to find any, is there a way to format it and use it with my user permission? Don't want it on NTFS, is there a way?, I have searched in these forums but there’s only an answer to format it in NTFS, so please. Thank you in advance.

• How to make Devilspie Make an Applet be "silent" but then openable

  Am using gnome-shell with 11.10. I have two panel based applets (Toggl and Gnome Alarm Clock) that I run at startup. The issue is that they start as Windows, and I'd like them to start "silently" but still be able to recall their interface when I need them. I installed Devilspie and gDevilspie which properly "close" the applets after starting them, but there's a "Catch 22." Because of the "close" behavior, they can never be opened again as long as the Devilspie daemon is running.. Is there a way around this? • How to detect a touch on transparent area of an image in a (libgdx) stage?

  Can some one please help to detect a touch on an image which I am using as an actor in a stage. The image is actually a long diagnol brush which has plenty of transparent area. The problem is when I touche the transparent area of the brush image it is also triggering the clicklistener of the image. I need the click listener should only be called when the finger actually touched the visible image not the area which is empty. I am using libgdx-0.9.4 libraries. • Avoiding orbiting in pursuit steering behavior

  I have a missile that does pursuit behavior to track (and try and impact) its (stationary) target. It works fine as long as you are not strafing when you launch the missile. If you are strafing, the missile tends to orbit its target. I fixed this by accelerating tangentially to the target first, killing the tangential component of the velocity first, then beelining for the target. So I accelerate in -vT until vT is nearly 0. Then accelerate in the direction of vN. While that works, I'm looking for a more elegant solution where the missile is able to impact the target without explicitly killing the tangential component first.

• Windows 7/Ubuntu 12 dual boot deleted for Windows 8 installation. How to make grub rescue go away?

  I had a Windows 7/Ubuntu 12 dual boot and I decided to clean install Windows 8 over them. The problem is that after I deleted all partitions and installed windows I was getting an "Operation system not found", however after an "enter" the system will normally boot into Windows 8. I realized that Windows did their trick and put the system (not partition anymore?!?) "tag" (Disk Management) on my media hard drive. After trying to fix the boot/mbr to be able to boot from my main drive the "Operation system not found" changed to the "grub rescue" prompt. I know that I cannot use that because I have killed the grub files. Windows can still boot as long as I choose to boot from the media drive. The question is, is there any way to move the "system", whatever it is now, to the main drive and have the PC boot from there, while making grub disappear? And if that is possible after that, can I just make the Media drive inactive or I will have to somehow remove the "system" tag?

• Is it a bad idea to get a Master's and Bachelor's Degree from the same university?

  I'm getting close to graduation and am strongly considering continuing to a Master's Program. My long-term goal for the future is to stay in industry rather than pursuing a Ph.D/Academic career. While communicating these thoughts with some of my peers, I've been told that staying in the same University for both a Bachelor's and Master's degree is ill-advisable. The reasons seem to be based along the lines of lack of exposure to other opportunities, programs, and faculty. My question is, if I intend to pursue a career outside of the Ph.D/Academic spectrum, will staying at the same university for my master's really decrease my value in software related positions? If so (or if not), why?

• How to disable mouseover popup icons on launcher?

  If an application is open and its icon is contained in the launcher panel, moving the mouse over the launcher icon will cause a very annoying popup icon to appear, showing a small image of the open application. It is annoying because it lingers too long and covers other information. For example, it covers the menus that appear when I right-click on a launcher panel icon. How do I disable these mouseover popups? I don't necessarily want to disable the "text" mouseover popup, I only want to disable the image popups. Thanks. Ubuntu 12.04, new install.

• When to update jQuery?

  When you recommend updating jQuery/jQuery UI? Or in other words: what are the best practices for updating jQuery/jQuery UI? I’m working on a long project that will take at least one more year. In that time span, I’m sure that jQuery/jQuery UI will be updated many times. Do you recommend update my jQuery/jQuery UI files every time an update is released? Or is better to stick with a particular version until the end of the project? I’m afraid of “breaking” code changes, and every time an update is released, I have to test everything. That takes too much time. But on the other hand, if I didn’t update, I’m afraid of bugs that later will bite me in the rear. The project is an ASP.MVC and I use jQuery a lot. Any thoughts?

• Finding inspiration / help for making up (weapon) names

  I'm really bad with words, especially with English words. Currently I'm struggling to make a good weapon names for my game, it needs to display the weapon functionality (weak/strong/fast/ballistic etc) correctly as well. For example the best weapon in a (futuristic) game cannot be called just with the name "Laser", it's just too boring, right? Are there any tools, websites or anything that helps me finding good names for weapons? (or anything else similar). I was thinking to use scientific names, but noticed that they are really hard to write, and they get very long, and I also lack information about science, I only know I could use the atomic sub-particles names in the weapons for example. How do I get started with becoming good with making up names? (this could apply in generally to any naming problems).

• How far back do you use your version control and for what reason?

  Typically when i work on a project i only go back a few days or the last major change when i decide to do something drastic. I sometimes notice i broke a test or a feature and overlooked it for a few weeks so i may go back a month or two and see if the feature or test is broken and trace down the week i broke it. Then find what change did it. On a long term project over the span of a year. Do you actually go back 6+ months and if so why?

  This might seem like a rant, but I am curious. CSS replaced tables for layout a long time ago. But we still have to use tables for layout when creating rich emails. Why is this? Are there any other options? Are there really technical constraints that prevent CSS from working in an email. What are they? I can see how linked or embedded style sheets might be a problem, but not even inline styles work. Is this ever going to change?

• How can I generate signed distance fields in real time, fast?

  In a previous question, it was suggested that signed distance fields can be precomputed, loaded at runtime and then used from there. For reasons I will explain at the end of this question (for people interested), I need to create the distance fields in real time. There are some papers out there for different methods which are supposed to be viable in real-time environments, such as methods for Chamfer distance transforms and Voronoi diagram-approximation based transforms (as suggested in this presentation by the Pixeljunk Shooter dev guy), but I (and thus can be assumed a lot of other people) have a very hard time actually putting them to use, since they're usually long, largely bloated with math and not very algorithmic in their explanation. What algorithm would you suggest for creating the distance fields in real-time (favourably on the GPU) especially considering the resulting quality of the distance fields? Since I'm looking for an actual explanation/tutorial as opposed to a link to just another paper or slide, this question will receive a bounty once it's eligible for one :-).   I keep having trouble getting the correct monitor resolution - every time I reinstall, I happen to use a newer Ubuntu release and the old tricks I used to know no longer work. Instead of leaving a long trail of questions for every new release, I am looking for a more universal and timeless solution. What's the correct way to set the correct monitor resolution with an Nvidia GPU for a screen that does not send EDID values? Note: This is a "dummy" question -- with the help from the chat, I already found the answer, and I am now going to add my own answer to document a solution that is hopefully universal.
