• Redesigning foreign website for my portfolio and offer it?

  I've had an interest in web design for a long time and am constantly trying to learn something new. I do not have any references in my portfolio, but would like to start freelancing. Is it bad practice to redesign a website from a local company and use it for my portfolio? Do I infringe any copyright? What if I offer the redesign to the company? Has someone done this before? If so, share your experiences.

• Effective way of keeping past projects with their working development environment?

  I find that whenever I want to go run a past project, it will take a long time before I can find it and before I have everything set-up again for it to be able to run. For example, I have python projects I created in Linux, and it depends on software packages that are easily installed in Linux, yet I no longer have the Linux VM I was using. And some of my other projects depend on other variables like web server configuration, PATH variables, sdk, IDE, OS version, device, etc. Does someone have an effective way of handling this issue? As of now I have only concerned myself with keeping the source code backed up yet it is difficult re-establish the working development environment and it is also difficult to keep the working development environment around as well.

• exchange live feed with pre-recorded video for wireless internet camera to router

  I wasn't sure if this should be asked in Web Applications, or Network Engineering, or what... Long story short, I have a video camera with mic that is wirelessly connected to a router (NETGEAR R6200), which can then be viewed through an online service. I would like to be able to somehow exchange the live feed with a pre-recorded video, or image, preferably with pre-recorded sound (the sound of silence would be easiest). Can I place this inbetween the camera and the router, do I need to redirect the camera feed to my laptop first, and then push out the fake video/audio onto the router, without the service knowing the difference? • Can data classes contain methods for validation?

  OK, say I have a data class for a user: public class User { private String firstName; private String lastName; private long personCode; private Date birthDate; private Gender gender; private String email; private String password; Now let's say I want to validate email, whether names are not empty, whether birth date is in normal range, etc. Can I put that validation method in this class together with data? Or should it be in UserManager which in my case handles the lists of these users?

• Why do almost all Java jobs (postings and from recruiters) say J2EE rather than the newer JEE versions?

  I'm still fairly new to Java but have definite comfort now working within the framework I am used to which would mainly be focused on Spring, Hibernate and JEE 6. It seems like every time I talk to a recruiter all they do is throw around the keyword "J2EE", they need someone with J2EE experience, etc. I am aware that legacy systems would still be using J2EE but it seems like at least some jobs would be advertising JEE now. Just curious if they are just stuck with some keyword that they can't seem to wrap their heads around it having a newer version or what. Having not done Java all that long, I haven't used J2EE specifically but wouldn't it be fairly easy to adapt having used the newer enterprise edition? Just curious to hear anything about this from someone with more experience.

• Cable connection takes a lot to establish

  I've just installed Xubuntu on my computer. It's all OK, but I have a problem with the internet connection: when I boot the PC and I login into Xubuntu it says to me "Cable connection disconnected" or "No cable connection". After a while (like 40 seconds) it connects to the internet and then I'm able to surf the net. I was wondering: why it takes so long to establish a connection? My initial response was to assail the assumptions underlying the problem. Language is a fluid thing, I argued. It changes in real time. Vocabulary and usage patterns shift day-to-day. To develop a list of words and their frequencies means taking a snapshot of a moving target. • how to change dolphin's select region of a file/folder (in detail view mode)

  Since nautilus has removed the dual pane. So I turn to dolphin. I am wondering how to change the default select behavior in detail view mode? Now to select a file/folder, my cursor has to hover over that file/folder and then the left click will take effect, but I much prefer the nautilus way, that is as long as your cursor is in the same row of that file/folder, left click picks up that item. This I think is more robust for user selection, it is faster. Any ideas how to achieve this in dolphin?

• Print jobs to Epson Stylus Photo 640 all stopped after upgrade 10.04 to 12.04

  Upgraded from Ubuntu 10.04 to 12.04 on 19th oct 2012. Now all print jobs end up in the print queue with the label "Stopped". Reinstalled the printer driver - it is gutenberg 5.2.8 pre1. Looking at "http://localhost:631/jobs" shows an error message by each stopped job as follows:"The PPD version (5.2.5 Simplified) is not compatible with Gutenprint 5.2.8-pre1." Found a long bug-fixing history in bugs.launchpad.net which seem to imply that this problem has been fixed. It seems to be a problem with the installation not updating the ppd files. Is there any workaround to fix this problem?

• Hurricane Season 2010 Starts

  Here we are at the start of another hurricane season.  As with past years, I have been preparing.  Last year I had the house painted with a high-quality paint, giving the stucco its best waterproofing possible.  I have a few cracks to patch with elastomeric patching material.  I will paint it to match the house later.  I also need to clean out the anchors for the lower angle brackets and reattach them.  I had removed the brackets for painting. You can read all my past hurricane entries here.  The predictors are promising a busy season.  We have heard that one before, so I put little credence in long range press releases.  Other than that we are pretty much ready.  I have a few new plans I will blog about later, but for now we get to listen to our daily thunderstorms outside.

After 3 years or so, there were lots of forum discussions on prospects of AAA game development in C#, and how a high performance vedio game can easily be programmed in C#. Suddenly after 2-3 more years, these discussions have died down and everybody seems like recommending native C++... What programming language should I practice on for long term? Should I stick with C# or do an extra effort for C++? Will AAA game companies adopt C# as a replacement to C++? Note : I aim to work at a AAA game company.

• Problem with Update(GameTime) Methods and Pause implementation

  I have the pause function implemented and it works correctly in that it dims the player screen and stops updating the gameplay. The problem is that GameTime continues to increase while it is paused, so my method that checks gameTime versus previousSpawnTime before spawning another enemy gets messed up and if the game is paused too long it is noticeable that the next enemy draws far too early. Here is my code for the enemy update. private void UpdateEnemies(GameTime gameTime) { // Spawn a new enemy every 1.5 seconds if (gameTime.TotalGameTime - previousSpawnTime > enemySpawnTime) { previousSpawnTime = gameTime.TotalGameTime; // Add an Enemy AddEnemy(); } ... I also have other methods that depend on gameTime. I've tried getting the total pause time and subtracting that from the total game time, but I can't seem to get it to work correctly if that is the way I should go about solving this. • Does data size in TCP/UDP make a difference on transmission time

  While discussing the development of a network component for our game engine, a member of our team suggested that transmitting either 500 bytes or 1k of data using UDP makes no difference from performance perspective of the system (the time it takes to transmit the data). He actually said that as long as you don't cross the MTU size, the size of the transmitted data doesn't really matter as it's all the same. Is that true for UDP? what about TCP? That sounds just plain wrong to me, but i am not a network expert. *I've been reading about other companies' game networking architectures, and it seems they're all trying to keep transmitted data to a minimum, making my colleague's claims seem even more unreasonable.

• Will my traffic come back after my site redesign?

  I screwed up. I launched my site after rebuilding it without setting up the proper 301's and traffic immediately dropped about 60%(it's not really something I thought about). After about a week and a half, I set the 301's back up yesterday and resubmitted my sitemap to google. Google has yet to index the whole thing, but traffic isn't getting any better. Is it likely to come back? If so, I. How long? Has this happened to you? Any info is appreciated. I am really anxious!

• Gnome 3 freezes when switching workspaces

  I have found an odd problem with Gnome 3 on Ubuntu recently. Under certain circumstances, when switching between two workspaces the whole desktop and user interface will 'freeze' for anything up to 2 minutes; during this time I cannot click anything or interact using the keyboard. Often, the screen will show a 'half-completed' animation of the workspace swapper. This is on Ubuntu 12.04.1 running on a 2-year old Macbook Pro, and it only seems to occur when using an external monitor. This does not seem to be a processor or memory issue, and does not occur every time I switch workspaces. Is this a known problem? What can I do in the short or long term to fix it?

• What options do I have for a Wedding Car website? [on hold]

  I currently run a Wedding Car website that is ranking in the top 5 for my local area, its not doing so well outside of that. I have listed the company in Google Business so it shows in the SERP and I have a Facebook and Twitter account linked, that I update regularly. I know keeping content fresh is important but nothing much changes so I am unsure what options I have? Should I create a blog and talk about the cars, weddings etc? I am totally unsure where to go with this website, the site currently has a few images and a small amount of text. Things I am considering, but would like advice on: A Mobile version of the website A Blog on the website A gallery page with pictures and descriptions Asking local companies to link to my website Essentially I have a small business website but not much content, because really there isnt! • Ubuntu doesn't start and I can't login

  My ubuntu 13.04 doesn't boot anymore. Eternal black screen. If I press ALT+CTRL+F1 I see that it's stucked on "Checking battery state [OK]." I'd like to try to go with sudo apt-get install gdm but I can't login on terminal tty2, tty3 etc. They correctly ask for my nickname, then they make me wait a lot, ask for password and make me wait again. After a lot of time (... a lot) the best I could achieve was visualizing "Documentantion https://help.ubuntu.com". I can never reach the point where I can give commands. Plus, during the long pauses, every 2 minutes it gives a messagge like this: INFO: task XXX blocked for more than 120 seconds. Any suggestion? Sorry for my bad english and thanks everyone for the attention.

• svn-based versioning tool, problem with network timeout

  My dev team was committed a versioning tool based on Subversion to run on Windows (our svn client is sliksvn). We're developing with Delphi XE2, should that matter. We're asked to implement a "check for updates availability" feature, which has to work as follows: Connect to the SVN repo via svn+ssh protocol; See if there are changes to receive and list them; Let the user decide if he wants to receive changes or not. We don't have a great knowledge on svn, so we thought to implement that thing client side by a certain number of CreateProcess calls that wrap directly proper svn commands. Anyways what we perceived is that if network problems should arise, such like a connection drop, svn client hangs forever waiting for the operation to close instead of failing for timeout. We know that CreateProcess can be given a timeout argument, but it wouldn't be correct to use it, as we can't know from outside how long will be the svn operation taking to complete. Is there any way to avoid that deadlock?
