• Creating an online community - use templates or self-develop?

  PHPMotion, Joomla or develop my own? I'm thinking of developing a common interest online community. It will be have UGC, stats, etc.. functionality, and perhaps an online store. Though cost is an issue at this time, I want to be professional and effective. Should I use existing free platform templates, like PHP, Joomla, or should I develop my own? What are the advantages/disadvantages of either option? As a rough estimate, how much will it cost me to develop and manage my own? And how long will it take. • Looking for a 24 Hour project for multiple languages [closed]

  Right two friends and I came up with this idea of having a 24h programming competition. Where we are going to meet at one place and program away for 24hours long. Though we need a 'project'. Something that needs to be made within 24h. Doesn't have to be a real thing, just a nice learning 'thing'. The rules that we setup for ourselves is that the project can be programmed in any language of our own choice. What I know is that one guy is a PHP enthousiastic, we've got a C#/.NET person. And I am quite easy in languages and speak quite a few (PHP/C#.net/C++STL/Python/JavaScript/Java). Anything really language specific is out of the question. Is there anyone who happens to have a great idea for this?

• Concurrency Utilities for Java EE Early Draft (JSR 236)

  Concurrency Utilities for Java EE is being worked as JSR 236 and has released an Early Draft. It provides concurrency capabilities to Java EE application components without compromising container integrity. Simple (common) and advanced concurrency patterns are easily supported without sacrificing usability. Using Java SE concurrency utilities such as java.util.concurrent API, java.lang.Thread and java.util.Timer in a Java EE application component such as EJB or Servlet are problematic since the container and server have no knowledge of these resources. JSR 236 enables concurrency largely by extending the Concurrency Utilities API developed under JSR-166. This also allows a consistency between Java SE and Java EE concurrency programming model. There are four main programming interfaces available: ManagedExecutorService ManagedScheduledExecutorService ContextService ManagedThreadFactory ManagedExecutorService is a managed version of java.util.concurrent.ExecutorService. The implementations of this interface are provided by the container and accessible using JNDI reference: <resource-env-ref>  <resource-env-ref-name>    concurrent/BatchExecutor  </resource-env-ref-name>  <resource-env-ref-type>    javax.enterprise.concurrent.ManagedExecutorService  </resource-env-ref-type><resource-env-ref> and available as: @Resource(name="concurrent/BatchExecutor")ManagedExecutorService executor; Its recommended to bind the JNDI references in the java:comp/env/concurrent subcontext. • Should I change the name in the WTFPL?

  I'm using the WTFPL in my personal projects published on GitHub. Currently I'm using it verbatim, but I have the suspicion I shouldn't be leaving Copyright (C) 2004 Sam Hocevar <[email protected]> in there, and instead should use my name. But the license is very confusing about this. Half of the WTFPL is about the WTFPL itself, so I thought that copyright might refer to a copyright on the license text itself, and not on the project this is licensing. Also, it says Everyone is permitted to copy and distribute verbatim or modified copies of this license document, and changing it is allowed as long as the name is changed. So would I have to change the name, from WTFPL to, say, "WTFPL-Domenic"?

• Immutable design with an ORM: How are sessions managed?

  If I were to make a site with a mutable language like C# and use NHibernate, I would normally approach sessions with the idea of making them as create only when needed and dispose at request end. This has helped with keeping a session for multiple transactions by a user but keep it from staying open too long where the state might be corrupted. In an immutable system, like F#, I would think I shouldn't do this because it supposes that a single session could be updated constantly by any number of inserts/updates/deletes/ect... I'm not against the "using" solution since I would think that connecting pooling will help cut down on the cost of connecting every time, but I don't know if all database systems do connection pooling. It just seems like there should be a better way that doesn't compromise the immutability goal. Should I just do a simple "using" block per transaction or is there a better pattern for this?

• Putting coworkers as references in CV [closed]

  My friend is working in one organisation for some time and wants to change a job. Problem is that motivation is money related (management is refusing to raise salary without any explanation despite 1) they don't have any questions nor problems related to his work 2) they promised raise long ago) and they won't find anyone to replace him. So they not just won't recommend him, but surely will say he is bad specialist and person as he leaves. Don't put that work in CV is not an option, so he thinks the possible solution is to reference his co-workers and teammates. He didn't work for them as employee, but he worked with them, so their (100% positive) feedback looks like fair compensation of what management will say. Is that correct? Looking for interviewers/employers opinion.

• Change guest username

  Now, looking around on Google shows me some ways in which to customise the settings of the Guest session. But, I would love a way to change the name of the Guest account. Basically, I'm planning to take some laptops out to a school in Africa and want to rename the "Guest" account in 14.04 to "Student" so the students use that. They tend to store stuff on USB sticks and they're using the Guest account so they can't break anything. EDIT: I'll expand on this slightly. They're using the guest account simply for the reason it doesn't save anything after logoff. This was a specific thing the teachers have asked for. I don't mind if the actual username remains guest behind the scenes, but as long as it shows up as Student to on Unity. Any way of going about this?

• Is it possible to track redirects to external sites from our subdomains?

  I have a handful of subdomains set up as redirects because we are using them for QR codes. I want to be able to track the QR code redirects (which are already set up and printed so no changing them at this point) and see the effectiveness of each. Here's two examples: http://qr.glorkianwarrior.com and http://ad.glorkianwarrior.com are set up to forward to our iTunes page (later on this year it may forward to Google Play or a specific landing page), is there any way on my server to track the redirect from the subdomain to iTunes and see where traffic is coming from first? I have the redirects set up through cPanel presently using subdomains. Edit: From the research I've seen I can't track a 301 directly. If I redirect to an internal page and then do a timed redirect to the iTunes link, how long will it take for the tracking script to track a hit?

• Handle all authentication logic in database or code?

  We're starting a new(ish) project at work that has been handed off to me. A lot of the database sided stuff has been fleshed out, including some stored procedures. One of the stored procedures, for example, handles creation of a new user. All of the data is validated in the stored procedure (for example, password must be at least 8 characters long, must contain numbers, etc) and other things, such as hashing the password, is done in the database as well. Is it normal/right for everything to be handled in the stored procedure instead of the application itself? It's nice that any application can use the stored procedure and have the same validation, but the application should have a standard framework/API function that solves the same problem. I also feel like it takes away the data from the application and is going to be harder to maintain/add new features to.

• I cannot play some WMA files

  I did a backup of several music files from my older Windows XP system. Now I can play all the .MP3 files but not all the .WMA. There are some kinds of WMA files that can be reproduced without problems, may refute this in the picture below. The right file can be played, the left isn't. • What happens between sprints?

  I'm working on a project loosely following the scrum model. We're doing two week sprints. Something I'm not clear on (and don't have a book to consult) is exactly what is supposed to happen between sprints: there should be some "wrap" process, where the product gets built and delivered, but: how long does this typically take? should the whole team be involved? does it strictly have to finish before developers start working on the next sprint items? is this when code review and testing take place? There are three developers, adding up to about 1 FTE. So the sprints are indeed very short.

• How to remove username from "Me" menu (right near to power button on the top panel)? [closed]

  Possible Duplicate: How do I replace the MeMenu username with my actual name? My user name takes approximately as long as would 6 icons. I don't need to see my username, I am the only user of my computer. How can I remove it? I use Ubuntu 10.10. UPDATE: The answer found: gconftool -s /system/indicator/me/display --type int 0 UPDATE: Unfortunately the solution doesn't work any more. Now it totally removes the instant messaging menu (including the icon) instead of just removing a name.

• Wireless problems on HP

  I'm not able to enable Wireless using the hardware switch on my HP ProBook4430s. Because of this the Enable Wireless option is greyd out and I cannot enable it. The greyd out option can be seen in the screenshot below. The results of iwconfig for my system are as follows, lo no wireless extensions. wlan0 IEEE 802.11bgn ESSID:off/any Mode:Managed Access Point: Not-Associated Tx-Power=off Retry long limit:7 RTS thr:off Fragment thr:off Power Management:off eth0 no wireless extensions. Also I tried to do the following, sudo ifconfig wlan0 up but I got an error as below, SIOCSIFFLAGS: Operation not possible due to RF-kill Also the result of sudo rfkill list all for my system is as follows, 0: phy0: Wireless LAN Soft blocked: no Hard blocked: yes 1: hp-wifi: Wireless LAN Soft blocked: no Hard blocked: no 2: hp-bluetooth: Bluetooth Soft blocked: no Hard blocked: no 3: hci0: Bluetooth Soft blocked: no Hard blocked: no How do I fix this problem? • Is deserializing complex objects instead of creating them a good idea, in test setup?

  I'm writing tests for a component that takes very complex objects as input. These tests are mixes of tests against already existing components, and test-first tests for new features. Instead of re-creating my input objects (this would be a large chunk of code) or reading one from our data store, I had the thought to serialize a live instance of one of these objects, and just deserialize it into test setup. I can't decide if this is a reasonable idea that will save effort in long run, or whether it's the worst idea that I've ever had, causing those that will maintain this code will hunt me down as soon as they read it. Is deserialization of inputs a valid means of test setup in some cases? To give a sense of scale of what I'm dealing with, the size of serialization output for one of these input objects is 93KB. • What does it mean for SVN "to pollute the local source tree"?

  I'm reading "Professional Team Foundation Server 2010" by Wrox, and in an advantages/disadvantages list, the said: "Like CVS, SVN makes use of .svn directories inside the source folders to store state of the local working copy, and to allow synchronization with the server. However, it can have the affect of polluting the local source tree, and can cause performance issues wiht very large projects or files." What does the bit about pollution mean? I've used SVN for C# & ASP.NET projects for a long time and haven't encountered any problems. What probably does this quote think I should have been watching out for?

• TGA loader: reverse height

  I wrote a TGA image loader in Java which is working perfectly for files created with GIMP as long as they are saved with the option "origin" set to "Top Left" (Note: Actually TGA files are meant to be stored upside down - "Bottom Left" in GIMP). My problem is that I want my image loader to be capable of reading all different kinds of TGAs, so my question is, how do I flip the image upside down? Note that I store all image data inside a one-dimensional byte array, because OpenGL (glTexImage2D to be specific) requires it that way. Thanks in advance.

• Effective way of keeping past projects with their working development environment?

  I find that whenever I want to go run a past project, it will take a long time before I can find it and before I have everything set-up again for it to be able to run. For example, I have python projects I created in Linux, and it depends on software packages that are easily installed in Linux, yet I no longer have the Linux VM I was using. And some of my other projects depend on other variables like web server configuration, PATH variables, sdk, IDE, OS version, device, etc. Does someone have an effective way of handling this issue? As of now I have only concerned myself with keeping the source code backed up yet it is difficult re-establish the working development environment and it is also difficult to keep the working development environment around as well.

• How to use music in a simple game?

  It's like this: I've got this very simple game in mind, and I happen to be lucky enough to know this guy at my college who is the best musician I've ever met in person who wasn't already on a stage. He writes these beautiful songs on piano, just meandering and mysterious. They'd add so much as background music. But here's my dilemma: say I record a 5 minute long song from him. How do I use it? Do I set it playing, and then make it start over as soon as it ends? Do I leave a 5 minute period of silence and then start it over again? Or do I find other music and just have continuous music playing? What do other people usually do for this sort of thing?

• Flickering/Flashing screen problem related to keyboard

  This will seems quite bizarre but that's a huge problem for me, I'm facing it for a long time since Ubuntu 12.04. My Ubuntu/Linux Mint/Debian (Unity/Gnome) always starts flickering after using the computer for a while, I always thought this had something to do with the video board. I have an Vostro 3550 (Radeon 6xxx/Intel Onboard). First I realized that when I was navigating trough an website, when i selected with the mouse a combo, the combo closed it self automatically then the screen starts flickering. The i realized when i was trying to make the login in the terminal (crtl + alt + f1) a strange character appears, like: ^@ repeatedly. When i keep CRTL pressed the system never flickers! I have absolutely no problem using Windows. What can i do? There is no such thing as Keyboard driver on Dell Support. I would love to use Ubuntu only, but this is very annoying. Problem happens on Ubuntu 12.04, .10 and 13.04 Linux Mint 15 (Cinnamon) Debian Live with Gnome
