  • How is load average related to CPU utilization?

    I am facing a load average of 3 since past 2 days. The CPU utilization is never above 40 % in all cases. Here are some screenshots of Server Density monitoring tool that I use. The process snapshot at the highest peak, @ 0:00 is as follows: And the process snapshot at the peak created at 12:00 is: My question is, even though CPU utilization is not 100 %, why am I facing a high average? PS: All snapshots are sorted by descending CPU utilization.

  • Setting correct hostname

    Hi, when i type cat /etc/hostname the console show me my ip adress, when i type cat /etc/mailname it shows me my-ip-adress.internetserviceteam.com I have no idea if it's a problem or not, but i was lokking through a lot of postfix install tutorials, and there when typing cat /etc/hostname they were geting their site name. Why do i get just a ip-adress? Maybe i messed up something when i set up my dns and domains with the webmin tool (I did that for the first time in my life)? OS: debian

    There are times after I eject a USB Flash drive, I want to copy some more files over to the USB Flash drive. In this case, do I always need to unplug the drive and plug it back in? Is there a way to "reconnect" or "un-eject" the drive? To eject, that are two ways: 1) Right Click the drive (say H:) and choose Eject 2) Click "Safely remove hardware" from the icon tool But there seems to be no way to un-eject or reconnect a drive.

    I've got a bash script that would be nicer if when I prompt the user, rather than just asking for input, if it provided a line that the user could edit (but a full text editor would be overkill, it's only one line) What tool provides this? dialog's inputbox is almost right, but I'd rather it didn't paint the whole screen.

    Hello, we'd like to implement a daily spam report to our users like Dreamhost does. Basically we need to send a daily mail (at midnight for example) to inform a single user of all the emails currently in his spam folder with the related score to let them look right away if there's a false positive. We use a basic sendmail server with procmail to redirect spam to the spam folder in each home directory. Do you know if is there a perl script or some other tool that does just that? I use to 'iostat' utility, frequently, to learn how much disk activity is taking place on a Linux host. 'iostat' provides a per-device breakdown, so you can see activity on a particular block device. But it doesn't go any deeper than that--you can't, for instance, query the write load generated by 'httpd' in the directory '/var/log/httpd/'.

    Hi, Is it possible to make a backup of my Windows Server from the built-in Microsoft tool, but as long as my Hyper-V backups are stored safely and not backed up anywhere, I can still restore my Windows Server from the native backup and use the Hyper-v machines? So if I lost my C:\ and my VMs are stored remotely, I can restore from an earlier backup and use those VMs.

    We are using Win 2008 R2 and connecting to it from Win7 boxes. The RDP is faster then before but we want to know if their are any other solutions that will make it faster. Due to licensing issue we got a software that multiple people need to access (not all at the same time) and the only way i can find is to install on a server and give RDP access to users. Is their a faster remote desktop tool then RDP ? Thanks Jay

I have checked all event viewer logs on remote PC, no information related this. Where do I start searching for problem? Does Windows has some kind of permission monitor tool? (Something along the lines of the 010 Editor, but infinitely more cost-effective).     I am moving data from an almost dead HDD to an external USB drive using linux , because for some reason Windows cannot see the data. I want to copy a large amount of data over from the HDD to the USB drive with integrity checking. I thought about copying everything over and then checking with md5summer but this would take a reaally long time because its a lot of data and this is not a very powerful PC.
