• How to join the World of Programming? [closed]

  Name's Vlad and I am currently on my third year of Community College, studying Computer Science with emphasis on Programming in C++ and Networking. I have completed a few programming courses with general ease, but have not gained advanced understanding of programming through school. None of my friends are serious programmers working in the industry. Being an active lurker on many programming websites, and in general tech oriented sites I have noticed how little I know about the industry, the lingo and terminology. (I have no clue how Git hub works, but I generally understand what its for). So I am looking for help as to where I should look for information on the programming world and the industry in which I a very interested. By that I mean, what sites I should utilize to gain information on programming practices, introduction to advanced C++ and resources that simply introduce a 20some programming noob. I like programming, but I haven't dug my hands deep into it yet, I want to start to do so before I transfer to a University. • Cannot boot after installing ubuntu on lenovo x120e

  I have installed ubuntu 11.10 on my x120e using amd64 alternate iso image. The installation went fine, but it is having issues while booting after a successful installation, it says - "No Operating System Found". I followed the instruction at - help.ubuntu.com/community/X120e#Installation to purge grub-efi and installed grub-pc, even then I couldn't boot into ubuntu.(got the same "No Operating System Found") This is the file from boot-repair with this setup - http://pastebin.ubuntu.com/926556/ Then I asked in #ubuntu and they suggested me to create a bios-boot partition, I was not very comfortable with the solution they had suggested but gave it a try anyhow. I re-sized my initial partition and made 4 MB free space in the beginning of the partition and had set the flag bios_grub. Re-installed ubuntu 11.10 this time using amd64 desktop iso image file. Installation went fine as before but finally this time also the system didn't boot, it gave the same - "No Operating System Found" message. In BIOS I have the settings as to use both (Legacy and UEFI) and with UEFI tried first. This is the boot-repair file from my latest setup - http://pastebin.ubuntu.com/926761 Any help/suggestions are appreciated.

• What is a good Foxit reader equivalent (or other PDF editor)?

  On Windows, I have found Foxit Reader to be quite handy when I need to highlight texts in PDF document, make annotations, etc. etc. Unfortunately, I have not yet found product as user friendly (which also does not corrupt PDF files...) and full-featured as Foxit software... Any recommendations? ** UPDATE ** I just tried the Open Office PDF import extension. It seems to work ok... If anyone used it for a while, I'd appreciate your feedback on that one. Thanks! ** UPDATE ** You can't highlight text with OpenOffice's PDF extension. Doesn't matter, I was reading this thread and found out about Xournal . As it turns out, it's in the repository. It does not natively save in PDF, but once all edits are done, the document can be exported to PDF (and overwrite the old one, just like Gimp with the native .XCE format and original PNG file, for example) I realize that this question is no longer a question in itself, but could be migrated to community wiki. However, feedbacks are still welcome! ** EDIT ** So... to close up this question, I have to say that I adopted Xournal . It is light and works pretty well, even on multi-page PDF documents. • Which iPhone ad API has produced the highest revenue for you?

  This isn't a technical question, but more of a request for advice and empirical/anecdotal data. I'm nearly done writing a free app for iPhone, and I'm at the stage where I'm going to put ads into the app. I've had mixed success in the past with iAd (their fill rates have been atrocious recently, and their payouts have cut by about 75% over the past 4 months or so), and would like to know how much ad revenue you, the community, has seen from the various ad APIs you've used for your iPhone apps. This isn't a request for opinion, i.e. which is 'better', only what kinds of numbers you're seeing. I don't need absolute figures, but 'iAd pays x% higher than AdMob, and y% lower than AdSense' would be extremely helpful to me as I make my decision as to which ad API to integrate into my App. Also, have you had any experience or success with integrating multiple ad APIs into the same app? That's something I'm considering doing in my current iAd-filled apps (particularly my iPad app, which has yet to receive a single impression after nearly 60,000 requests)... something like: 1) Request-from-iAd 2) if that fails, request-from-adSense 3) if that fails, request-from-adMob 4) if that fails, ... etc.

• How to disable discrete GPU using NVIDIA drivers?

  I have a DELL studio XPS 13 (aka 1340) as of 12.04 most things run smoothly out of the box, but I have some power draining and warmness issues (if not to be called terrible heat issues) The system came with a NVIDIA GeForce 9500M (which has Hybrid SLI) and it shows up in "lspci" as these 2 cards 02:00.0 VGA compatible controller: NVIDIA Corporation G98 [GeForce 9200M GS] (rev a1) 03:00.0 VGA compatible controller: NVIDIA Corporation C79 [GeForce 9400M G] (rev b1) I had to install nvidia-current over noveau driver 'cause noveau does freeze the system after suspension. By installing nvidia-current and running nvidia-xconfig the resume process after suspension is fixed. By the way both with nvidia-current and noveau the system drains a lot of battery and heats up a lot. I suppose this is because the discrete GPU is always on. I don't really need 3D graphics on this system, if not the minimal to run unity and compiz for window management. So my question is: How do I disable, using nvidia-current, the discrete GPU 9200M and use only the integrated one 9400M? notes: In BIOS I have no option to disable discrete GPU This I think is not applicable because of the suspension-freeze issue (with noveau): https://help.ubuntu.com/community/HybridGraphics I've found this but I don't know which --sli option I should choose to fit my needs: http://manpages.ubuntu.com/manpages/hardy/man1/nvidia-xconfig.1.html My system has not optimus or cuda, but anyone can tell me if bumblebee can work for me?

• Hello!

  After many months of deliberating I have finally gotten around to starting this blog! The reason for doing this is the large number of half finished articles lying around on my hard disk, unpublished and unloved. These articles have been of huge benefit to me, and have been written in an attempt to consolidate my own thinking, in order to help me structure my thoughts and ideas as I have tried to digest new ideas and understand abstract theories. It is my hope that by tidying up these articles and publishing them here that I can continue this learning process by getting feedback on the ideas from within the developer community. i have worked with .NET for 8 years now, and have worked with ASP.NET, SQL Server, Windows programming as well as general network administration. Since 2004 my focus has been on integration, web services, and more often than not Biztalk Server. The last two years have seen me focus on SOA and WCF, and the Managed Services Engine, so this is probably where the main focus of the blog will to start with, but there are so many fun things to play with these days that i have no idea where it will end up.....   Barry

• How to create a bootable system with a squashfs root

  My goal is to be able to take a customized root file system loaded with the software I want. So far I've created a squashed filesystem using debootstrap and chroot to install the software I want on the system. The problem I am now running in to.. whenever I boot in to the system, my user accounts that were set up in the chroot do not work. First boot everything works out, second boot I can't log in. That is baffling to me. Any one know a reason or a place to start looking? Update To get a working system with a squashfs filesystem: sudo apt-get install live-boot live-boot-initramfs-tools extlinux sudo update-initramfs -u Create a squashfs file from a bootstrapped or running ubuntu filesystem with whatever packages you want available. https://help.ubuntu.com/community/LiveCDCustomizationFromScratch provides good instructions for creating a debootstrapped system to build on. Format the target drive with ext2/3/4 and enable the bootable flag. Create the folder layout on the target drive and install extlinux: mkdir -p ${TARGET}/boot/extlinux ${TARGET}/live extlinux -i ${TARGET}/boot/extlinux dd if=/usr/lib/syslinux/mbr.bin of=/dev/sdX #X is the drive letter cp /boot/vmlinuz-$(uname -r) ${TARGET}/boot/vmlinuz cp /boot/initrd.img-$(uname -r) ${TARGET}/boot/initrd cp filesystem.squashfs ${TARGET}/live Create ${TARGET}/boot/extlinux/extlinux.conf with the following contents: DEFAULT Live LABEL Live KERNEL /boot/vmlinuz APPEND initrd=/boot/initrd boot=live toram=filesystem.squashfs TIMEOUT 10 PROMPT 0 Now you should be able to boot from the target drive in to your squashed system.

• loss of sound in ubuntu 12.04

  I'm running Linux E6520 3.2.0-56-generic #86-Ubuntu SMP Wed Oct 23 09:20:45 UTC 2013 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux on a Dell Latitude E6530. (This is a new machine; have run the same version of linux on an older machine for a year, without this happening.) I've been losing sound regularly, though have not been able to isolate the trigger for this. I've scoured the web on this subject, in particular https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SoundTroubleshootingProcedure and Audio stopped working suddenly in 12.04 Nothing from the first site seemed to work for me. From the second site, I learned enough to be able to fix the problem when it happens, but nothing on the web has helped me figure out why the problem is happening in the first place. Patching together stuff from the web, and with some blind luck, I've found that the following steps seem to restore sound pulseaudio --kill pulseaudio --start pavucontrol -> output devices Click on the "Mute audio" icon, which mutes audio Click on the "Mute audio" icon, which unmutes audio. This obviously doesn't make sense: audio wasn't muted in the first place, but somehow, magically, toggling mute audio off and on seems to reset something. Can anybody suggest from this information why sound would be disappearing in the first place (it seems as though something is getting muted at the system level, but I don't know what)? a simpler (command-line/script) way of restoring sound, in particular, is it possible to reset pavucontrol from the commandline? Some other pieces of information that may be of use: The problem is clearly happening at the system level, since I've set up a clean new user, and this user has the same problems that I do. So user fixes like deleting the .pulse directory aren't (and don't) help. Sound works fine in Windows (dual-boot) so it's not a hardware problem Any help/suggestions on this would be most appreciated.

• Why is Python used for high-performance/scientific computing (but Ruby isn't)?

  There's a quote from a PyCon 2011 talk that goes: At least in our shop (Argonne National Laboratory) we have three accepted languages for scientific computing. In this order they are C/C++, Fortran in all its dialects, and Python. You’ll notice the absolute and total lack of Ruby, Perl, Java. It was in the more general context of high-performance computing. Granted the quote is only from one shop, but another question about languages for HPC, also lists Python as one to learn (and not Ruby). Now, I can understand C/C++ and Fortran being used in that problem-space (and Perl/Java not being used). But I'm surprised that there would be a major difference in Python and Ruby use for HPC, given that they are fairly similar. (Note - I'm a fan of Python, but have nothing against Ruby). Is there some specific reason why the one language took off? Is it about the libraries available? Some specific language features? The community? Or maybe just historical contigency, and it could have gone the other way?

• Unity gizmos vs. referenced game objects

  I'm designing a Unity script that I intend to be highly reusable and as easy as possible to setup within the editor. To this end, a number of properties of this script really need some kind of visual representation on screen. It is an unresolved question to me whether the design of the script should require references to placeholder game objects, OR just Vector3's and float's that have associated gizmos drawn for them. Normally a gizmo would be a natural choice, except that Unity gizmos are not directly manipulable (as far as I can tell). Because of this shortcoming I'm having to consider whether depending on references to placeholder game objects is a more designer-friendly approach ultimately, in spite of the extra setup required, and that it might be counter-intuitive when the placeholder game objects disappear at run-time (which my script would do). Is there a community standard or preference here in this case? Can a Unity-experienced game programmer / designer speak to which approach they feel is more intuitive or more convenient to setup, when using a 3rd party script? Or is this just splitting hairs as long as I ship an example prefab with my script?

• Layers - Logical seperation vs physical

  Some programmers recommend logical seperation of layers over physical. For example, given a DL, this means we create a DL namespace not a DL assembly. Benefits include: faster compilation time simpler deployment Faster startup time for your program Less assemblies to reference Im on a small team of 5 devs. We have over 50 assemblies to maintain. IMO this ratio is far from ideal. I prefer an extreme programming approach. Where if 100 assemblies are easier to maintain than 10,000...then 1 assembly must be easier than 100. Given technical limits, we should strive for < 5 assemblies. New assemblies are created out of technical need not layer requirements. Developers are worried for a few reasons. A. People like to work in their own environment so they dont step on eachothers toes. B. Microsoft tends to create new assemblies. E.G. Asp.net has its own DLL, so does winforms. Etc. C. Devs view this drive for a common assembly as a threat. Some team members Have a tendency to change the common layer without regard for how it will impact dependencies. My personal view: I view A. as silos, aka cowboy programming and suggest we implement branching to create isolation. C. First, that is a human problem and we shouldnt create technical work arounds for human behavior. Second, my goal is not to put everything in common. Rather, I want partitions to be made in namespaces not assemblies. Having a shared assembly doesnt make everything common. I want the community to chime in and tell me if Ive gone off my rocker. Is a drive for a single assembly or my viewpoint illogical or otherwise a bad idea?

• Show and Tell: What work are you the most proud of? [closed]

  Hey, In the spirit of building community, and because it's always cool to see great work being pushed out and created by people, anyone up for a little show and tell? The rules are really simple, and this is supposed to be a bit of fun, so; post a link to a single piece of work (anything you've produced, designed or developed (or helped developed)) and write a little paragraph or two on what it is, what you like about it, the technology you used and perhaps one thing that you learnt from the project. It could be a website, framework, open source project, game, mobile application... etc. So, allow me to start. I'm personally very proud of a tiny iPhone application I designed and developed. It's only available to UK AppStore users, and I only have a small userbase, but, I like it. The application is called Sushi Total: http://knowledgeisporridge.com/sushitotal.html It's written in Objective-C. It's a very simply application that allows you to total up your bill at Yo Sushi restaurants by tapping coloured plates. If I learnt anything from making this application it's this: I believe software should be simple and uncluttered, and that producing an application with one feature is absolutely fine as long as it works really well. So, who's next?

  Internationalization (i18n) is a way of designing and developing a software product to function in multiple locales. This process involves identifying the locales that must be supported, designing features which support those locales, and writing code that functions equally well in any of the supported locales. Localization (L10n) is a process of modifying or adapting a software product to fit the requirements of a particular locale. This process includes (but may not be limited to) translating the user interface, documentation and packaging, changing dialog box geometries, customizing features (if necessary), and testing the translated product to ensure that it still works (at least as well as the original). i18n is a pre-requisite for L10n. Resource is 1. any part of a program which can appear to the user or be changed or configured by the user. 2. any piece of the program's data, as opposed to its code. Core product is the language independent portion of a software product (as distinct from any particular localized version of that product - including the English language version). • M-Audio Delta 1010LT on 12.04

  I have 12.04 64bit installed, my soundcard is a Delta 1010LT, it seems to be partially detected, I've been following steps here: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SoundTroubleshooting/ lspci -v | grep -A7 -i "audio" shows this: 04:07.0 Multimedia audio controller: VIA Technologies Inc. M-Audio Delta 1010LT Flags: bus master, medium devsel, latency 64, IRQ 22 I/O ports at ec00 [size=32] I/O ports at e880 [size=16] I/O ports at e800 [size=16] I/O ports at e480 [size=64] Capabilities: <access denied> Kernel driver in use: snd_ice1712 aplay shows this: **** List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices **** card 0: M1010LT [M Audio Delta 1010LT], device 0: ICE1712 multi [ICE1712 multi] Subdevices: 1/1 Subdevice #0: subdevice #0 In the sound settings on the desktop all I see is the ICE1712 S/PDIF, which I don't use, I want to use the individual outputs on the card, I'm not so bothered about inputs, I just want the playback for now. If I open alsamixer in the console, I see all of the output and input channels, i've raised the volume on them but I don't get anything in the sound settings on the desktop and when I play any sound, I hear nothing. Can someone help?

• Resume on 30 Days of SharePoint

  Dear readers, as you might have noticed... It was an organisational desaster on my end! Even though I continued my studies and research on Microsoft SharePoint 2013 during the last 30 days, I wasn't able to write an article a day to keep you posted on my progress. Nonetheless, I gathered a good number of additional blogs, mainly SharePoint MVP sites, and online forums which will be helpful in the next couple of weeks while I'm actually going to develop a C#-based client which will enable an existing 'legacy' application to SharePoint as a document management system (DMS) besides other already existing solutions. Finding excuses Well, no. Not really. I simply didn't block any or enough time every day to write down my progress during my own challenge. My log book on learning about SharePoint stands at 41 hours and 15 minutes during this month. Which means that I spent an average of more than 1 hour per day on getting into SharePoint. I know that might sound a little bit low but also keep in mind that I went for the challenge on top of my daily job and private responsibilities. During the same period there had been two priority 0 incidents from clients - external root cause - which took presedence over this leisure project. More to come Anyway, it was a first trial and despite the low level of reporting on my blog, I'm confident about what I learned during the last 30 days, and I'm ready to implement the client's requirements. At least, I would say that I have a better understanding about the road map or the path to walk during the next month. As time and secrecy allows I'm going to note down some bits and pieces... During the process of development, I'm going to 'cheat' on the challenge summary article and add links to those new entries. Just for the sake of completeness. Next challenge? Hmm, there had been ideas during the last meetup of the Mauritius Software Craftsmanship Community (MSCC) regarding certifications in IT and eventually we might organise some kind of a study group for specific exams, most probably Microsoft exams towards MCSD Web Developer or Windows Developer.

• Poll on Entity Framework 4 &ndash; one year on

  12 months back (today is March 15th 2010) on the 16th of  March 2009 I created a poll on Entity Framework v1 – the marmite of ORMs? A quick poll…. Entity Framework v1 was getting a mixed reception at the time – I met developers who genuinely hated it and I met developers who were loving the productivity improvements they were seeing. There were definitely issues with v1, too many IMHO. Which is why the product team placed a huge effort on listening to the community to drive the feature set for v2 (which ultimately was named Entity Framework 4 as it ships with .NET 4). I think overall the team have done a great job. It isn’t perfect in .NET 4 (which is why the team are busy on post .NET 4 improvements) but I would happily use it and recommend it for a wide variety of projects – much wider than I would have with v1. I am speaking on EF 4 at www.devweek.com this Wednesday and I thought it would be fun to put a new version of the poll out and see how v4 is being received. Obviously the big difference is we have not yet shipped EF4 vs when I did the original poll on EF1. • Quiz Master at Beyond Relational

  Last month a friend of mine invited me to join BeyondRelational.com and asked me to nominate myself as a .NET Quiz Master. In order to qualify I must submit an interesting question related to .NET and their .NET team will review the information and will select 31 quiz masters for the .NET quiz category. This seems insteresting to me so I go ahead and submit one entry. Luckily I was selected as one of the 31 Quiz Masters in the .NET category. • Grub menu not waiting despite of GRUB_TIMEOUT=10

  I have Ubuntu 12.04 installed along side of windows 7. The grub menu doesn't seem obey GRUB_TIMEOUT=10, I see the grub menu there for a split second and it immediately defaults to the first option. Grub menu worked fine when I first installed ubuntu. I am not able to pinpoint what exactly broke it(maybe some update?). I did resize my ubuntu partition using gparted but am not sure if that is what caused it. here are my settings from etc/default/grub GRUB_DEFAULT=0 #GRUB_HIDDEN_TIMEOUT=0 #GRUB_HIDDEN_TIMEOUT_QUIET=true GRUB_TIMEOUT=10 GRUB_DISTRIBUTOR=`lsb_release -i -s 2> /dev/null || echo Debian` GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash" GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="" How do I fix this? Edit: As suggested by 'kamil' this is what I have tried so far with no luck - 1) hold the shift key while booting 2) sudo gedit /etc/default/grub edit GRUB_TIMEOUT to `GRUB_TIMEOUT=10` sudo update-grub 3) sudo gedit /etc/default/grub edit GRUB_TIMEOUT to `GRUB_TIMEOUT=10` sudo update-grub2 4) at the end of your /etc/grub.d/00_header file, comment out the if condition except for the regular set timeout line like this: #if [ \${recordfail} = 1 ]; then # set timeout=-1 #else set timeout=${GRUB_TIMEOUT} #fi then sudo update-grub and sudo update-grub2 5) install boot repair sudo add-apt-repository ppa:yannubuntu/boot-repair sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get install -y boot-repair boot-repair boot-repair output - Boot successfully repaired. ... • Dealing with under performing co-worker

  I'm going to try to keep this topic as generic as I can so the question isn't closed as too specific or whatever. Anyway, let's get to it. I currently work on a somewhat small project with 15-20 developers. We recently hired a few new people because we had the hours and it synched up well with the schedule. It was refreshing to see hiring done this way and not just throwing hours & employees at a problem. Alas, I could argue the hiring process still isn't perfect but that's another story for another day. Anyway, one of these developers is really under performing. The developer is green and has a lot of bad habits. Comes in later than I do and leaving earlier than I am. This in and of itself isn't an issue, but the lack of quality work makes it become a bit frustrating. When giving out tasking the question is no longer, what can realistically be given but now becomes - How much of the work will we have to redo? So as the project goes on, I'm afraid this might cause issues with the schedule. The schedule could have been defined as a bit aggressive; however, given that this person is under performing it now in my mind goes from aggressive to potentially chaotic. Yes, one person shouldn't make or break a schedule and that in and of itself is an issue too but please let's ignore that for right now. What's the best way to deal with this? I'm not the boss, I'm not the project lead but I've been around for a while now and am not sure how to proceed. Complaining to management comes across as childish and doing nothing seems wrong. I'll ask the community for insight/advice/suggestions.

• No operating system found even when grub2 was reinstalled

  I know there have been many variations on this question and have certainly tried to do my research. I don't really know what I'm doing so I would rather not take risks. I am trying to dual boot xubuntu and windows 7. I started out with xubuntu and just installed windows. Of course, the mbr got overwritten and windows didn't seem to recognize linux. So I booted to the live cd and rewrote the mbr. And of course, now I get the error "No Operating System Found" on startup. I have been following these tutorials to help me out. community.linuxmint.com/tutorial/view/245 unix.stackexchange.com/questions/96977/grub-wont-install ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2036730 Specifically, I ran these commands: # sdb2 is the partition with xubuntu sudo mount /dev/sdb2 /mnt # sdb1 is my boot partition sudo mount /dev/sdb1 /mnt/boot # not sure what this does, but ran it anyway... for i in /dev /dev/pts /proc /sys /run; do sudo mount -B $i /mnt$i; done sudo chroot /mnt #once chrooted grub-install /dev/sdb update-grub here's a link to my gparted https://www.dropbox.com/s/zpbbzh9z7k1l3pj/gparted.png EDIT--- didn't realize that the drive letters are different in the picture than in my code (its sda in the pic instead of sdb). I have been restarting a lot and sometimes the drive letters change and make my usb into sda.
