• Recommended Practices for Managing httpd.conf for different environments

  We have several different environments (developer dekstop, integration, QA, prod) which should have slightly different variants of the same httpd.conf file. As an example, the httpd.conf file configures that httpd should act as a reverse proxy and proxy certain URLs to Jetty, but the hostname of the Jetty instance is different in each environment. Is there a recommended practice for mangaging these kinds of differences? I looked around the apache documentation for the httpd.conf file and I didn't see anything that does what I need.

• Bootable backup of a Mac without an HFS+ disk?

  How can I make a bootable backup of my Mac's internal hard drive to be restored using Disk Utility, without formatting my external destination drive as HFS+ (it's FAT32, of course)? Time Machine and SuperDuper both require that the volume where the backup is saved be HFS+ formatted. This looks helpful: http://developer.apple.com/macosx/backuponmacosx.html But it doesn't explain how to use FAT32 disk.

• Access RAID configuration in x3550M2

  I'm trying to configure RAID in a IBM x3550 M2 server. I can't find any messages on boot about any hotkey to access the configuration utility. I wasn't able either in BIOS. The card is a on board LSI 1068e. I can't find the original CD's shipped with the server, but I downloaded Server Guide 9.21 from IBM web. Booted with that, and only getting stuck at "Windows loading"p. Tried with a 8.? version from a x3550 (M1), but it was less useful. Although I do not consider myself an expert, I'm starting to feel like a newbie luser. Any help?

• reinstall PHP as apache module

  Hi sorry for the newbie question, I am not a sys admin by any means. I recently set up a VPS with webmin/virtualmin. Our CMS of choice says that PHP needs to be run as an Apache module in order to run. It says: Recompile PHP with the flag --with-apxs I've googled but can't find how to do this particularly. I think I installed PHP using "yum install php" or thru webmin, but can't remember exactly. Appreciate if anyone can point me in the right direction.

I have Apache and Entropy php5 installed, when i write my applications, some pages wont run when php has errors, however these are not recorded on a log file, I created one php_errors.log and entered the following on the php.ini file error_log = /usr/local/php5/logs/php_errors.log However errors are not written to this file and i have log_errors = true What could be the problem

• How to login without entering username and password

  I'm a newbie running Ubuntu 9.10. I have two users (wife and me), and each user's screensaver is set to lock so that on wakeup, we get to choose which user's desktop to go to. However, Ubuntu requires a password, so this is pretty tedious. I'd like to switch users without entering any password. I know about this trick that works for the boot login, but it doesn't deal with multiple users. Is it possible to set empty passwords for users in Ubuntu, or skip the password in other ways? (I'm expecting real Linux users to suggest that passwordless users must not get any rights and there be an admin user with a strong password. Yes, you're right. But that's not what this question is about. Thanks.)

• Replace a SQL Server query with another before execution

  I am trying to work with a legacy application in SQL Server which at some point does the following query SELECT serverproperty('EngineEdition') as sqledition The server replies with 2 (which is the correct edition), but the application closes since the app demands to be run over SQL Server Express which is 4. We don't have access to the code and the developer is long gone. Is there a way to configure SQL Server so that when this query is received it simply returns 4 and not the value of the property?   I have a CentOS "development / testing" server that runs extremely slowly. It's running Apache and Mysql using PHP. Top reports that 98% of the CPU utilization is frequently spent on "st" - Steal Time. What could cause a server to spend so much CPU on steal time, and how can I diagnose the problem? I didn't notice the problem until after I granted a third party developer root access (for all I know it has a root kit running, though unlikely).

• Start ELEVATED script from within script

  Hallo, I'm playing around with Powershell (relative NewBie) and I'm looking for the easiest way to call a Powershell script with elevated rights from within another script. I know of the runas verb for start-process which allows me to start a new script with a different account. My problem is, however, that under Vista (UAC active) every admin account has two access tokens, a normal privilege one and an elevated one. If I use the runas method, the second scripts gets started under the right account but with the non-elevated access token. Is there an easy way to control this? Thanks a lot for your help! Ulrich

• User and Key Press Issues with Putty

  Ubuntu Server newbie here, got some annoying issues with remote accessing my box with Putty. When I create a user and then login as that user, the terminal always starts with just '#' and not 'user@hostname:~#' which isn't useful where I want to see where I've changed directory too, like I can normally. Also, when logged in as a user, I can't press the cursor keys to move the caret (blinking thing) around, or press up to see previously executed commands. Instead it gives me this representation of the button pressed: ^[[D ^[[A ^[[B ^[[C. Pressing Delete, too, gives me ^[[3~. This is all strange to me, because when logged in as root, it all works fine. I'm hoping this is just something I've accidentally changed in Putty, or added the user wrongly, or perhaps just got caps lock on. Thanks.

• ubuntu server refusing connections via port forwarding

  Getting some really weird behavior from our Ubuntu server... it's behind a Verizon router firewall with port forwarding (port 8080 to port 80 on the server), and we've been having issues accessing it via this external IP. From within the network, it appears to respond normally (I can access it via web browser and SSH), but refuses connections through port forwarding (using our static external IP). The strangest thing is that it actually responds to external port-forwarded connections right after being restarted, but quickly lapses back into this pattern of refusing external connections. I'm a bit of a server newbie (I'm actually a programmer in a small startup that just lost their server ops guy, urgh) so this is all trial by fire for me. Does anyone have any advice on what could be going wrong here? Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

What credentials do I use? I am still using root on the VPS, although I have disabled root login and am using value key pairs to login. do I have to change to another user from root or can I use root as the ftp credentials from the dashboard to download plugins?   Hi there, I'm a newbie Linux (Ubuntu) user and I'll like to know if someone can give some advices of where to install stuff, which folders don't touch, which is the meaning of each folder and so on. My first concern is, should everything go into my home folder? I've installed "manually" Komodo Edit (it's an IDE) and it has gone to my home folder, I really don't like the idea of having an application there. (in windows I used to have my workfiles/pictures/downloads... partition and then the OS partition with all the apps). So, is there any place where I could install this software? Any advice for having my home folder ordered? Maybe I should create an apps folder in my home dir? Thanks in advance. :) pd: most of the time I use apt to install stuff, but I don't always found the software I want there...

• Creating a command that compress a file and save it on a usb, but cannot detect the usb in linux.

  First of all I can't detect the USB on linux using the command line. I check the directory dev and still cannot find the usb. used the df command to check the usb. I plug and typed df and then unplug and typed df again and nothing changed. We are using a server(telnet) to use the command line of linux on a windows 7 OS. The second problem I have is how can I execute the bash script that I have made. It seems that I cant put my .sh file in /usr/bin/ I would like to make my command executable in all directories like a normal command. Sorry, im still newbie at this things.   We are using Windows 2008 R2 and IIS 7 running on Amazon EC2. IIS is running a single .NET application written in C#. We are having performance issues and I want to give the application more memory, but I cannot figure out how to do it. How do I control the amount of memory that the CLR gets? I'm a total newbie with IIS, .NET and the CLR. If I were working with Java, I would just use the -Xmx flag to increase the memory available to the JVM (e.g., -Xmx3000m for 3GB). But, I cannot seem to figure out how to do this in the Windows world.

• Windows 8 install fails

  I have the windows 8 release preview 32 bit iso and it fails to install when booted out of a flash drive, it copies the files and the boot loader installs but the install hangs when I boot into Windows 8 the first time, it simply keeps on spinning forever. I did a vhd install of Windows 8 developer preview and it installed fine. Looking at the partition from Windows 7, I can see that the files are present.

• Git: get back my commited data from a messed up local repo

  I am a newbie to git so I think I made something stupid (will move back to hg soon ;-)) Assume I'm at version A and I commited a change but didn't want that. Now assume we have version B. I didn't found a good solution how to cleanly roll B back to A but went back to A via checkout and continued commiting - assume I have version C. A--->B \-->C Now the problem is that those commits were successfull (I can see the SHA's and the msg in .git/logs/HEAD) but the commits do not show up in the log and I couldn't push them to github. Before detecting the mess I checkout to 'master' ... and git rolled all back to B. How can I get my version C back or are my changes lost? Is this the same problem as described here? Please close. I posted it here. On stackoverflow seems to be more questions related to that ...
