• How to design a C / C++ library to be usable in many client languages?

  I'm planning to code a library that should be usable by a large number of people in on a wide spectrum of platforms. What do I have to consider to design it right? To make this questions more specific, there are four "subquestions" at the end. Choice of language Considering all the known requirements and details, I concluded that a library written in C or C++ was the way to go. I think the primary usage of my library will be in programs written in C, C++ and Java SE, but I can also think of reasons to use it from Java ME, PHP, .NET, Objective C, Python, Ruby, bash scrips, etc... Maybe I cannot target all of them, but if it's possible, I'll do it. Requirements It would be to much to describe the full purpose of my library here, but there are some aspects that might be important to this question: The library itself will start out small, but definitely will grow to enormous complexity, so it is not an option to maintain several versions in parallel. Most of the complexity will be hidden inside the library, though The library will construct an object graph that is used heavily inside. Some clients of the library will only be interested in specific attributes of specific objects, while other clients must traverse the object graph in some way Clients may change the objects, and the library must be notified thereof The library may change the objects, and the client must be notified thereof, if it already has a handle to that object The library must be multi-threaded, because it will maintain network connections to several other hosts While some requests to the library may be handled synchronously, many of them will take too long and must be processed in the background, and notify the client on success (or failure) Of course, answers are welcome no matter if they address my specific requirements, or if they answer the question in a general way that matters to a wider audience! My assumptions, so far So here are some of my assumptions and conclusions, which I gathered in the past months: Internally I can use whatever I want, e.g. C++ with operator overloading, multiple inheritance, template meta programming... as long as there is a portable compiler which handles it (think of gcc / g++) But my interface has to be a clean C interface that does not involve name mangling Also, I think my interface should only consist of functions, with basic/primitive data types (and maybe pointers) passed as parameters and return values If I use pointers, I think I should only use them to pass them back to the library, not to operate directly on the referenced memory For usage in a C++ application, I might also offer an object oriented interface (Which is also prone to name mangling, so the App must either use the same compiler, or include the library in source form) Is this also true for usage in C# ? For usage in Java SE / Java EE, the Java native interface (JNI) applies. I have some basic knowledge about it, but I should definitely double check it. Not all client languages handle multithreading well, so there should be a single thread talking to the client For usage on Java ME, there is no such thing as JNI, but I might go with Nested VM For usage in Bash scripts, there must be an executable with a command line interface For the other client languages, I have no idea For most client languages, it would be nice to have kind of an adapter interface written in that language. I think there are tools to automatically generate this for Java and some others For object oriented languages, it might be possible to create an object oriented adapter which hides the fact that the interface to the library is function based - but I don't know if its worth the effort Possible subquestions is this possible with manageable effort, or is it just too much portability? are there any good books / websites about this kind of design criteria? are any of my assumptions wrong? which open source libraries are worth studying to learn from their design / interface / souce? meta: This question is rather long, do you see any way to split it into several smaller ones? • NetworkOnMainThread exception occuring

  I got a code from Android Hive to parse JSON data from url. Then I am trying to implement the same code on Rotten Tomatoes Upcoming Movies Api. I have implemented the same code with almost modifying all the xml files according to my needs. But the problem is when I am trying to run the code, its showing NetworkOnMainThread Exception. • Is asp.net caching my sql results?

So when my coworker tests from her computer with another code, giving access to another place in the tree, she get's the same tree as me. (The tree is supposed to show your own level and down.) I have added a html-comment to show what orgid it passes to the function, and the orgid passed is correct. So either the treeview caches something serverside, or the sqlquery caches it's result somehow... Any ideas? EDIT: I have narrowed it down. All functions returns correct values. It just doesn't bind to it. I suspect the CssFriendly adapter to have something to do with it. I disabled the CssFriendly adapter and the problem persists... Stepping through it in debug it's correct all the way, with the stepper standing on "tvNavtree.DataBind();" I can hover the pointer over the tvNavtree.Datasource and see that it actually has the correct data. So something must be faulting in the binding process...

• Performance issues with jms and spring integration. What is wrong with the following configuration?

  I have a jms producer, which generates many messages per second, which are sent to amq persistent queue and are consumed by single consumer, which needs to process them sequentially. But it seems that the producer is much faster than the consumer and i am having performance and memory problems. Messages are fetched very very slowly and the consuming seems to happen on intervals (the consumer "asks" for messages in polling fashion, which is strange?!) Basically everything happens with spring integration. Here is the configuration at the producer side. • Wired PS/2 Keyboard and Mouse do not work in 12.04 Live CD or after fresh 12.04 install - Foxconn D270S Atom Motherboard

  My Wired PS/2 keyboard and mouse do not work in 12.04, either in a fresh install or from the Live CD. A USB keyboard and mouse will work. The PS/2 keyboard and mouse will work using the same hardware and a fresh 10.04 Ubuntu install or a fresh Windows 7 install. The motherboard is a Foxconn D270S Atom based motherboard. This problem is specific to this motherboard and Ubuntu 12.04. So far I've tried running in the fresh 12.04 install: sudo apt-get install sudo apt-get upgrade sudo apt-get dist-upgrade After the apt-get upgraded the first time, I now get to the point where there are 0 items to be upgraded. Rebooted and still no PS/2 keyboard/mouse. I've also tried adding the following lines to GRUB at boot time (the PS/2 keyboard works in GRUB) acpi=noirq acpi=off Neither setting made any difference. The motherboard is a Foxconn D270S Atom based motherboard. Even more interestingly, 12.04 recognizes the same PS/2 keyboard and mouse on a separate Gigabyte AM3+ based motherboard. I only have this problem on this particular motherboard with Ubuntu 12.04. Any help would be appreciated. I bought this low-power motherboard specifically for the task of running Ubuntu 12.04 for the next five years... Update... I dug out an old PS/2 mouse that does not use a PS/2 to USB adapter but is directly wired for PS/2. Still no PS/2 keyboard or mouse after reboot. Again, I only have this problem with this motherboard and 12.04 Ubuntu. Other motherboards work fine with 12.04 and this motherboard works fine with 10.04. Update 2... I installed the 12.04 Server version. The text-based installer recognized the keyboard without issue, but after the first boot into the installed OS, the PS/2 keyboard would no longer respond. I tried installing Gnome on the Server install and the PS/2 mouse and keyboard don't work in Gnome either. I Opened bug #995570 for this issue

  Possible Duplicate: What is the correct way to install ATI Catalyst Video Drivers? I am trying to install the latest AMD Catalyst Radeon 12.10 drivers on Ubuntu 12.10. When I get to the ready to install screen I get an error message. This is the message from the install log file. I'm not sure what to do. Thanks very much for your help in advance! **Supported adapter detected. Check if system has the tools required for installation. fglrx installation requires that the system have kernel headers. /lib/modules/3.5.0-17-generic/build/include/linux/version.h cannot be found on this system.   When I connect my 3G USB Modem to my laptop with 12.04, nothing shows up in Network-Manager. This modem is working in 11.10 and the modem is shown in Network-Manager but not in 12.04 !! • Cannot connect my Ubuntu to TV with HDMI

  Another problem in my way to Ubuntu world.. Trying to make things work Linux way, day 4, problem #5321: I have a Compaq laptop and Nvidia graphic adapter. I also have Panasonic TV, which I thought I could use as a second screen just like I used to to when I was still using Windows Vista with my laptop. Plug the screen to the comp and voilá, I can watch my videos on big screen. And a boll***s I can, not with ubuntu anyways. Nvidia x server (or whatever it's called) does recognize my tv. It's very badly designed gui as I can never be sure has it saved my changes or not (most often not), but I recon I've got that one sorted out. I haven't found a way to set a primary monitor there, but it does see there are two monitors, my laptop and the tv. So far so good. But then? Ubuntu's own monitor setting only sees the laptop screen. If I reboot (with the HDMI cable connected) I end up having a black screen. Then I have to take the cable away, cut the power off and restart the comp.. Please, help, any help would be appreciated! I would so much love to like this linux more than windows but it surely takes a lot of trying...

• Dell XPS + Apple Mini-Display Adaptor + Projector = KABOOM

  Remember how I blogged about rolling with the punches? So today my buddy and Prairie Dev Con speaker James Chambers went to present on Microsoft MVC. He brought his fancy new Dell XPS laptop, which he had used to do presentations and stream internet video to a projector before. But today, the technology gods were not smiling… James tries to connect his laptop to the projector. Nothing. The projector just can’t recognize the connection. Realize that we’ve already had two sessions in that room already, so everything *should* work. The Dell XPS laptop James has doesn’t have a VGA port. Instead, it has HDMI and Mini-Display ports. James had one of the Apple mini-display to VGA adapters. If I connected my Mac Book Pro, I could connect no problem, so it wasn’t the adapter. He could connect his laptop to projectors before, so it wasn’t the laptop. And we’d already had sessions, so it wasn’t the projector. So what was it? Well, all three it turns out. Thanks to this post over at Irongeek.com we discovered that using Windows 7 on a Dell XPS with the Apple connector and a non-plug-in-play projector won’t work. So the fix was ditch the Apple connector, use the Star Tech model instead (listed in the Irongeek article). So James is good to go, he’s going to talk at the last session and we’ve moved the Windows 8 talk Jim Russell and I were going to do until tomorrow. Roll with the punches…

  Although I can actually run San Andreas under wine first of all this is the menu: Well when I press the first menu item, I can play but there are some weird "bugs" with the graphics. The sky turns black, some 3d figures appearing on the screen etc. + the game is very slow. Intel built in graphic card so drivers are built in as well. • Tuxedo 11gR1 Released

  I've been a little quiet the last several months as the Tuxedo team has been very busy. Today Oracle announced the 11gR1 release of the Tuxedo product family. This release includes updates to Tuxedo, TSAM, and SALT, as well as 3 new products that Oracle is announcing today. These 3 new products are the Oracle Tuxedo Application Runtime for CICS and Batch, Oracle Application Rehosting Workbench, and the Tuxedo JCA Adapter. By providing a CICS equivalent runtime and a rehosting workbench to automate the rehosting of COBOL CICS code, JCL procedures, data definitions, and data, Oracle has significantly lowered the effort and risk to rehost mainframe CICS and Batch applications onto the Tuxedo runtime on open systems. By moving off proprietary legacy mainframes, customers have experienced better performance and achieved a 50-80% lowering of their total cost of ownership. The rehosting tools allow the COBOL business logic to remain unchanged and automate the replacement of CICS statements with calls to Tuxedo. The rehosted code can then run on open systems 'as-is'. Users can still use the same TN3270 interfaces they are used to eliminating the need for retraining. Batch procedures can be run and managed under a JES2 like environment. For the first time, customers have the tools and enterprise class runtime environment to move their key legacy assets off the mainframe and on to distributed open systems whether the application uses 250 MIPS, 25,000 MIPS, or more. • Vagrant: VirtualBox: Headless Ubuntu: How to set up bridged networking?

  I am trying to set up a Vagrant VirtualBox (v4.2.4) virtual machine with a Ubuntu "box" which I got from www.vagrantbox.es. I was able to use Vagrant to set it up as a headless box and start it, and then I was able to ssh locally into it (using 127.0.0.1:2222), connect the internet and sun a bunch of "sudo apt-get" commands to update it and install new software. I would like to be able to access this virtual machine on my network, so I need a bridged network adapter for the virtual box. When I went to the VirtualBox console for this device, and tried to set up bridged networking, it said that I needed the "guest additions". I tried to install them and I couldn't get the .iso file for the guest additions. I went elsewhere on the 'net and it seems that I had to run "sudo apt-get install virtualbox-guest-additions-iso" from the virtual machine in order to get bridged networking. I tried this, and it installed fine after a couple of reboots. I then tried to set up bridged networking again (VirtualBox console to Devices-Network Adaptors...) but it didn't work. What, or what else do I need to do to set up bridged networking in this virtual machine? I appreciate any help that I can get.

• Twin Cities Code Camp 8 Retrospective

  I just got back (a few hours ago) from Minneapolis, where I was speaking at the Twin Cities Code Camp 8. I’d never been to a Twin Cities Code Camp, and I have always heard such great things, so I submitted and got accepted to speak. The conference (what I got to see) was great. My talk was pretty short on people, but there are many reasons for that. First, I spoke opposite Donn Felker (speaking about developing for Android) and Keith Dahlby (speaking about Dynamic .NET). So of course, my talk is going to be empty. How could I compete with that? Plus, my talk was about software process improvement, specifically about how our process has evolved. Maybe not the smartest idea to submit to talk about software process at a developer’s conference. The people who DID attend however, seemed to really enjoy the talk. There was good interaction and good, thoughtful questions. So the attendees seemed engaged. I actually did get a chance to go to one session. I went and saw Javier Lozano talk about Open source tools for ASP.NET MVC. I am hip-deep in MVC stuff right now and getting up to speed on MVC 2 as well. I learned about MVC Turbine, Javier’s Open Source project. I will definitely be adding it to my MVC arsenal. Thanks Javier! I did forget my AC adapter for my laptop and got a little lost in Minneapolis on my way to get one from MicroCenter Saturday morning, but other than that, it was a great trip. It’s a long drive, but seeing all the guys and getting two Nut & Honey rolls from Roly Poly in Eden Prarie for lunch on Saturday made the trip totally worth it. I look forward to seeing what Jason & Chris come up with for next year! Thanks for having me guys!

  I have a CardScan 60 II device and installed SANE in my Ubuntu 10.10 laptop. The problem is I can't make scanimage find the device. • Connecting the Dots (.NET Business Connector)

  Recently, one of my colleagues was experimenting with Reporting Server on DAX 2009, whenever he used to view a report in SQL Server Reporting Manager he was welcomed with an error: “Error during processing Ax_CompanyName report parameter. (rsReportParameterProcessingError)” The Event Log had the following entry: Dynamics Adapter LogonAs failed. Microsoft.Dynamics.Framework.BusinessConnector.Session.Exceptions.FatalSessionException at Microsoft.Dynamics.Framework.BusinessConnector.Session.DynamicsSession.HandleException(Stringmessage, Exception exception, HandleExceptionCallback callback) We later found out that this was due to incorrect Business Connector account, with my past experience I noticed this as a very common mistake people make during EP and Reporting Installations. Remember that the reports need to connect to the Dynamics Ax server to run the AxQueries., which needs to pass through the .NET Business Connector. To ensure everything works fine please note the following settings: 1) Your Report Server Service Account should be same as .NET Business Connector proxy account. 2) Ensure on the server which has Reporting Services installed, the client configuration utility for Business Connector points to correct proxy account. 3) And finally, the AX instance you are connecting to has Service account specified for .NET business connector. (administration –> Service accounts –> .NET Business Connector) These simple checkpoints can help in almost most of the Business Connector related  errors, which I believe is mostly due to incorrect configuration settings.
