• How much time do you spend in Reflector? (.NET)

  As a consultant I get to toy around with many different products and APIs as the customer demands we use X and Y. I think it is great fun and I learn a lot from it. What will make a great developer over time is, in my opinion, the will to understand and learn new things. Therefore, I will always try to understand what happens "behind the scenes" when I am using 3rd party products. I spend around 10-15% of my time in Reflector to learn what the heck I'm really doing when I call method X. How much time do you spend on average? This may also apply to reading (open) source code, documentation etc.

• What sort of object is this and how to use it?

  What would be the correct name for this type of array? There are 3 main sections and 4 sub-parts consisting of "issuedTime" "text" "url" and "validToTime", how do you start to convert this to an object? If there was only 1 main section, it would be fairly simple to do however with 3 main parts and no identification for each main section has me scratching my head as where to start. Any advise appreciated. • CSS Only Selecting Certain Classes

  Hi I'm working with a Wordpress template. I have a separate template page for the blog section. On the other pages of the site I have class that works fine and looks like this .post header h2 { display:none; } On the blog page, I add this to the CSS and it works as it should #main .post header h2 { display:block; } However if I try that with other classes like #main .wrapper { background-color:#000000; } Nothing happens. • Array in Bash Not Found

  I am trying to declare an array in bash, but when the code is run it says it cannot find the array. I have tried to write out the declaration of the array in several different ways, but it seems no matter how I try to declare it I cannot get it to work. I originally tried to declare it as such: candidate[1]= 0 candidate[2]= 0 candidate[3]= 0 The error messages that are returned are: votecalculation.sh: 13: candidate[1]=: not found votecalculation.sh: 14: candidate[2]=: not found votecalculation.sh: 15: candidate[3]=: not found After this I tried another solution I found online: ARRAY=( 'can1' 'can2' 'can3' ) When that is used it returns this error: votecalculation.sh: 12: Syntax error: "(" unexpected I am new to Bash and am getting really confused about arrays. Is there some specific way I need to declare an array or am I just going about it completely wrong?

• Mixing JPA annotations and XML configuration

  I have a fairly large (new) project in which we have annotated many domain classes with JPA mappings. Now it is time to implement many named queries -- some entities may have as many as 15-20 named queries. I am thinking that writing these named queries in annotations will clutter the source files and therefore am considering putting these in XML mapping files. Is this possible? Mort importantly, is this reasonable? Are there better approaches? How is this done?

  I used a dataset to store 15 tables that I need at the time of loading. When i filled all the tables using stored procedure it returns me all the table but name of the table doesn't comes as that of actual table name in a database. It takes all the table with table name as Table1, Table2, Table3... I want them to be with the name as they actually are in table. • Convert 12hour time to 24Hour time

  I have hourly weather data. I've seen the function examples from here: http://casoilresource.lawr.ucdavis.edu/drupal/node/991 I'm altering the code to account for airport data, which has a different URL type. Another issue with the airport weather data is that the time data is saved in 12 hour format. • How do you fix "Too many open files" problem in Hudson?

  We use Hudson as a continuous integration system to execute automated builds (nightly and based on CVS polling) of a lot of our projects. Some projects poll CVS every 15 minutes, some others poll every 5 minutes and some poll every hour. Every few weeks we'll get a build that fails with the following output: FATAL: java.io.IOException: Too many open files java.io.IOException: java.io.IOException: Too many open files at java.lang.UNIXProcess.<init>(UNIXProcess.java:148) The next build always worked (with 0 changes) so we always chalked it up to 2 build jobs being run at the same time and happening to have too many files open during the process. This weekend we had a build fail Friday night (automatic nightly build) with the message and every other nightly build also failed. Somehow this triggered Hudson to continuously build every project which failed until the issue was resolved. This resulted in a build every 30 minutes or so of every project until sometime Saturday night when the issue magically disappeared.

  I've been going through Skiena's excellent "The Algorithm Design Manual" and got hung up on one of the exercises. The question is: "Given a search string of three words, find the smallest snippet of the document that contains all three of the search words—i.e. , the snippet with smallest number of words in it. You are given the index positions where these words in occur search strings, such as word1: (1, 4, 5), word2: (4, 9, 10), and word3: (5, 6, 15). Each of the lists are in sorted order, as above." Anything I come up with is O(n^2)... This question is in the "Sorting and Searching" chapter, so I assume there is a simple and clever way to do it. I'm trying something with graphs right now, but that seems like overkill. Ideas? Thanks

• Validation of dependent properties in a "live edit" WPF app

  I'm working on an app which supports live editing. That is you update properties in one area and their impact is seen in another with hitting "apply". Happens to be a charting app. One such edit "group" allows specifying a range. A triple range in fact: High, Target and Low. Our validation is such that High must be greater than target, target must be greater than Low (rocket science). Our dilemma is that the visual experience is a bit jarring when someone wants to go from say 30,20,10 to 15,10,5. I'm curious if anyone has implemented a mechanism for this scenario that might fit well in our situation such that we don't "yell" at the user as they change the range values.

• Can you control pinterest's "find image" results?

  Rather than add Pin It buttons through our site, I would like to simply control what images show up in Pinterest's "Find Image" results if a user decides to pin one of our URLs. As of now, "Find Images" allows the user to scroll through the images it finds on the page so they can select which image to pin. The "found" images start with the first jpg in the html file, I'm assuming (could that be a bad assumption??). On our site, this forces a user to scroll through about 15 navigation and promotion images before arriving at the featured product image. Is there any way to specify this image to show first in those results? Maybe through a meta tag, or by adding a class or id to the element? Without a public Pinterest API, this seems like just guesswork, but I wanted to see if anyone else has run into this, or solved this. Thanks.

  I was trying out an experiment with Python, trying to find out how many times it could add one to an integer in one minute's time. Assuming two computers are the same except for the speed of the CPUs, this should give an estimate of how fast some CPU operations may take for the computer in question. The code below is an example of a test designed to fulfill the requirements given above. This version is about 20% faster than the first attempt and 150% faster than the third attempt. Can anyone make any suggestions as to how to get the most additions in a minute's time span? Higher numbers are desireable. If I was writing out the formula by hand I would put something like newframe=rbind(oldframe[1:rownum,],row_to_insert=row_to_insert,oldframe[(rownum+1:nrow(oldframe),] to name row_to_insert.   Please dont laugh . Over the past 15 years or so I've written all the software that runs my medical practice in D5. Last week when I went to DelphiArea to update a component I got attacked and my disk became unbootable/unrecoverable. I have my original D5p disk and all the components backed up but I want to migrate to W7. I don't care if my delphi apps look like vista/7, I just want to be able to install it and code on the machine again for maintenance purposes. 1) are there any tricks to install D5 so it works in W7? 2) is using a vm program really the only/best way? if so, which is suggested. • Can I turn off implicit Python unicode conversions to find my mixed-strings bugs?

  When profiling our code I was surprised to find millions of calls to C:\Python26\lib\encodings\utf_8.py:15(decode) I started debugging and found that across our code base there are many small bugs, usually comparing a string to a unicode or adding a sting and a unicode. Python graciously decodes the strings and performs the following operations in unicode. How kind. But expensive! I am fluent in unicode, having read Joel Spolsky and Dive Into Python... I try to keep our code internals in unicode only. My question - can I turn off this pythonic nice-guy behavior? At least until I find all these bugs and fix them (usually by adding a u'u')? Some of them are extremely hard to find (a variable that is sometimes a string...). Python 2.6.5 (and I can't switch to 3.x).
